--> 00:00:13.359 And today we will be looking at verses 1 through 9. 00:00:13.679 --> 00:00:15.599 Verses 1 through 9. 00:00:17.039 --> 00:00:21.359 And our passage today is all about repentance. 00:00:22.480 --> 00:00:33.039 To be more specific, today's message is all about the urgency of repentance and God's patience in our delay. 00:00:34.079 --> 00:00:42.799 So if you have been a Christian for any length of time, the word repent should not be foreign to you. 00:00:43.119 --> 00:00:53.280 In fact, it should be very familiar to us because the word repentance or repent is found 106 times in the Bible. 00:00:53.439 --> 00:00:58.880 That's 42 times in the Old Testament and 64 times in the New Testament. 00:00:59.600 --> 00:01:08.239 But tragically, I believe many of us have drifted away from the doctrine of repentance. 00:01:08.879 --> 00:01:11.439 We don't talk about it much anymore. 00:01:11.680 --> 00:01:13.760 It feels too judgy. 00:01:14.319 --> 00:01:18.079 It's the way old legalistic Christians used to talk. 00:01:18.319 --> 00:01:23.599 It feels outdated and makes many of us cringe when we hear it. 00:01:24.000 --> 00:01:27.840 And I believe we feel this way for two main reasons. 00:01:28.239 --> 00:01:38.719 First, because of the hyper-grace movement, which has sought adamantly in America to do away with repentance altogether. 00:01:39.200 --> 00:01:46.159 They say, we don't need to repent, we don't need to talk about it, because God is love. 00:01:47.599 --> 00:01:54.959 As if God's love has superseded or canceled out the call to repentance. 00:01:55.200 --> 00:02:02.719 They claim that God's love is so big that we don't need to repent or call others to repentance. 00:02:02.959 --> 00:02:08.319 And this doctrine, if embraced, destroys repentance. 00:02:09.039 --> 00:02:18.639 Secondly, the second reason is repentance has been poorly communicated by some very nasty people. 00:02:19.680 --> 00:02:35.520 People on the town square, veins popping out of their neck, they're all caffeinated up and they're screaming, repent or burn in hell, and they're just angry and they're judgmental and they're mean-spirited people. 00:02:36.240 --> 00:02:39.280 And it creates this negative connotation. 00:02:40.159 --> 00:02:51.680 So my hope today is to reclaim the importance of repentance and to remind us how urgent the call to repentance is. 00:02:52.240 --> 00:03:00.479 And so let us not forget that John the Baptist's ministry, his entire ministry, was a call to repentance. 00:03:00.719 --> 00:03:05.199 His baptism was a baptism of repentance. 00:03:06.000 --> 00:03:11.680 The very first words of Jesus' public ministry was what? 00:03:12.319 --> 00:03:16.000 Repent, for the kingdom of God is at hand. 00:03:16.400 --> 00:03:27.520 Peter's first sermon in Acts chapter 2 ended with a public call for everyone to repent so that times of refreshment may come. 00:03:27.919 --> 00:03:36.639 Israel's history, especially in the prophets, is filled with God calling them over and over again to repent. 00:03:37.680 --> 00:03:48.560 So before we dive into a sermon on repentance, allow me to first define what it is, just so there's no confusion. 00:03:49.520 --> 00:03:59.919 Repentance is turning away from a lifestyle of sin and it's turning towards salvation in Jesus Christ. 00:04:00.400 --> 00:04:06.080 The Greek word for repentance is metanoia, which literally means a change of mind. 00:04:06.400 --> 00:04:13.840 It's a change of mind that leads to a change of heart, which results in a change of worship. 00:04:14.159 --> 00:04:27.199 Repentance is not a feeling, it's not just feeling sorry for your sins, it's turning from your life of sin and laying it all at the Savior's feet. 00:04:27.920 --> 00:04:32.720 So the question our passage answers this morning is this. 00:04:44.240 --> 00:04:50.160 So let's set the stage by looking at verse 1, Luke chapter 13, verse 1. 00:04:51.519 --> 00:05:04.240 There were some present at that very time who told him, Jesus, about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mingled with their sacrifices. 00:05:05.199 --> 00:05:14.959 So just to give us some context here, if you look back into Luke chapter 12, Jesus just got done teaching about getting right with God. 00:05:15.680 --> 00:05:22.160 If you look back at Luke chapter 12 at the end of it, he uses a courtroom illustration. 00:05:22.399 --> 00:05:34.480 And Jesus basically says, get right with your adversary before court, before judgment, because you may think you will win the court case, but you won't. 00:05:34.800 --> 00:05:39.920 You will be judged and you will pay every last penny. 00:05:40.560 --> 00:05:48.879 So Jesus just touched on this idea that we need to be reconciled to God before we die. 00:05:49.519 --> 00:05:50.720 That's vital. 00:05:50.959 --> 00:05:52.319 It's crucial. 00:05:52.800 --> 00:06:00.720 We need to have peace with God and not be his enemy so that we can escape his judgment. 00:06:00.959 --> 00:06:08.879 We need to be reconciled with God before we die, or else we will be found guilty in his sight. 00:06:09.360 --> 00:06:17.360 And now, here in Luke chapter 13, breaking news comes out that some men were just slaughtered by Pilate. 00:06:17.680 --> 00:06:33.519 These men were following the Old Testament law, they were performing animal sacrifices before God, and Pilate ruthlessly slayed them during this holy ceremony. 00:06:34.480 --> 00:06:54.639 We don't have record in history about this specific incident, but what we do know is this a group of Galilean men were offering animal sacrifices, which was a very sacred thing, and Pilate stepped in and ordered to have them killed. 00:06:55.040 --> 00:06:57.839 It seems like a terrible atrocity. 00:06:58.160 --> 00:07:04.000 And people now want to know what does Jesus think about this incident? 00:07:04.800 --> 00:07:15.120 Imagine for a moment that Jesus, God in the flesh, was walking among us here and now in Mount Vernon. 00:07:16.319 --> 00:07:17.839 Wouldn't it be nice? 00:07:18.000 --> 00:07:27.600 Or wouldn't you be curious to know his thoughts on recent scandals, political events, worldwide issues? 00:07:28.160 --> 00:07:29.600 I would be tempted. 00:07:29.839 --> 00:07:39.759 I would be one of those guys screaming from the crowd, trying to get close to Jesus, saying, Jesus, what are your thoughts on the legalization of marijuana? 00:07:40.000 --> 00:07:44.000 What are your thoughts on the new government administration? 00:07:44.240 --> 00:07:47.600 What do you think about the Russian and the Ukraine war? 00:07:47.920 --> 00:07:51.680 Or the CEO that was just shot and killed in New York? 00:07:52.480 --> 00:08:06.399 I mean, everyone else has an opinion on these things nowadays because a social media and YouTube, everyone has a platform and they can share about how they feel or interpret breaking news. 00:08:06.720 --> 00:08:16.319 So how nice would it be to get the Lord's real-time perspective on recent tragedies and injustices? 00:08:17.199 --> 00:08:24.720 So these people want to know, hey Jesus, were these men killed because they were evil? 00:08:25.839 --> 00:08:32.639 Did these men die because they were sinners, or were they unjustly killed by a wicked tyrant? 00:08:33.200 --> 00:08:55.919 And Jesus responds to their question, and it's not what we would expect at all, he says in verses two through five, and he answered them, saying, Do you think that these Galileans were worse sinners than all the other Galileans because they suffered this way? 00:08:56.799 --> 00:09:03.919 No, I tell you, but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish. 00:09:04.799 --> 00:09:16.559 Or those eighteen on whom the Tower of Saloom fell and killed them, do you think that they were worse offenders than all the others who lived in Jerusalem? 00:09:16.879 --> 00:09:24.799 No, I tell you, but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish. 00:09:26.480 --> 00:09:32.159 Jesus here could have answered their curiosity and said those men deserved it. 00:09:32.399 --> 00:09:46.960 They were doing some terrible things behind closed doors, they were not performing the sacrifices the way God wanted, so God used Pilate to judge them, or he could have said they didn't deserve it, and Pilate's a wicked tyrant, but he doesn't. 00:09:47.360 --> 00:09:55.679 Anytime we witness tragedy, by the way, or injustice, it provokes human curiosity, does it not? 00:09:56.159 --> 00:09:58.399 Why did these men die this way? 00:09:58.639 --> 00:10:02.000 Surely there was some level of sin involved. 00:10:02.639 --> 00:10:17.440 Now the Jews during this time adopted this terrible theology that if someone experienced tragedy or suffering, that equals God's disapproval of that person. 00:10:18.159 --> 00:10:19.759 Terrible theology. 00:10:20.000 --> 00:10:21.840 It's nothing new under the sun. 00:10:22.159 --> 00:10:27.039 If you read the book of Job, Job's friends thought the same thing during his time. 00:10:27.440 --> 00:10:36.080 Even Molly and I, we hear stories about good people, really good people experiencing some horrible tragedy. 00:10:36.320 --> 00:10:44.720 And our flesh is tempted to ask the question I wonder what sin they were committing behind closed doors. 00:10:44.960 --> 00:10:48.799 You know, our human minds are trying to grasp why. 00:10:49.279 --> 00:10:51.679 Did they die because they were bad people? 00:10:51.919 --> 00:10:54.159 Did God cause it to happen? 00:10:54.399 --> 00:11:00.720 These things provoke human curiosity, but our Lord does not feed into that here. 00:11:01.120 --> 00:11:05.440 He's not interested in answering our human curiosity. 00:11:05.840 --> 00:11:09.600 Instead, he points the finger back at them. 00:11:10.159 --> 00:11:15.440 He answers the question in a way that points directly to the human heart. 00:11:15.840 --> 00:11:24.480 God, by the way, always answers our questions according to what we need to hear, not what we want to hear. 00:11:24.799 --> 00:11:33.600 Jesus uses this tragedy to communicate a deeper, more pressing spiritual reality. 00:11:34.159 --> 00:11:38.399 And he first eliminates their assumptions and their suspicions. 00:11:38.639 --> 00:11:45.519 He says, Do you think that these Galileans were worse sinners than any other Galilean? 00:11:46.000 --> 00:11:52.559 In other words, Jesus is asking them, Did these men die because they were really bad people? 00:11:53.039 --> 00:11:54.480 Is that what you think? 00:11:55.200 --> 00:12:00.080 Were these men worse sinners than any other person in Galilee? 00:12:01.120 --> 00:12:07.519 That would be like me bringing two church members up front and asking the congregation, who's more of a sinner? 00:12:08.159 --> 00:12:09.600 It's silly. 00:12:09.919 --> 00:12:16.080 Here, Jesus is putting all men on an equal playing field. 00:12:16.399 --> 00:12:18.320 We are all sinners. 00:12:18.799 --> 00:12:28.639 We are all equally guilty before a holy God and deserve eternal torment in a literal hell. 00:12:28.960 --> 00:12:33.919 These men were no better or worse than any other person in Galilee. 00:12:34.240 --> 00:12:49.519 And to drive this point further, Jesus gives them another event, not one of injustice, but one of tragedy regarding the Tower of Siloam that randomly fell over and killed a group of people. 00:12:50.000 --> 00:12:52.080 Did God cause that to happen? 00:12:52.399 --> 00:13:05.440 God saw a bunch of wretched sin lovers walking together, group of 18, and he sent a strong wind, and the tower collapsed and crushed them because these people were so evil. 00:13:05.919 --> 00:13:08.480 Not at all, says Jesus. 00:13:08.799 --> 00:13:15.279 These people were no worse offenders than anyone else in Jerusalem. 00:13:15.679 --> 00:13:21.120 Jesus is obliterating our human preconceptions. 00:13:21.840 --> 00:13:28.559 He's tearing down our assumptions and he gets to the heart of the matter. 00:13:28.960 --> 00:13:37.120 At the end of the day, whether someone dies justly or unjustly, we are all sinners. 00:13:37.440 --> 00:13:42.240 In case you didn't know, we all deserve death. 00:13:43.120 --> 00:13:49.840 The most important question we need to be asking isn't, did they deserve it? 00:13:50.159 --> 00:13:57.919 The most important question we need to be asking for ourselves and for others is did they repent? 00:13:59.519 --> 00:14:02.639 That is the heart of what Jesus is teaching here. 00:14:02.960 --> hated God died and lost their life. 00:14:46.720 --> 00:14:53.440 During the Indian Ocean tsunami in 2004, it killed both sinners and saints. 00:14:54.000 --> 00:15:01.200 Stage four cancer has taken the lives of so many atheists and Christians. 00:15:02.159 --> 00:15:17.039 It doesn't matter what age you die, whether you're 20 or 90, it doesn't matter how you die, whether it's tragic or of natural causes, what matters most while you're alive on earth is this. 00:15:17.519 --> 00:15:19.360 Did you repent? 00:15:20.320 --> 00:15:27.440 Did you turn from a lifestyle of sin and turn towards the Savior, Jesus Christ? 00:15:27.840 --> 00:15:31.279 Death is not the ultimate matter in life. 00:15:31.600 --> 00:15:32.960 Repentance is. 00:15:33.600 --> 00:15:40.639 Death is ceasing to exist, us could die at any moment, and that God's judgment is coming, and there's only one way to escape it, by repenting and believing in Jesus Christ, why are we not talking about this more? 00:17:14.079 hard-hearted, screaming, Turner burn, picket sign craziness, but a sincere, gentle, loving, but urgent call to family, friends, and strangers that God is good, that He is holy, sin is bad, it's No one is guaranteed their next breath. 00:20:17.200 --> 00:20:23.279 So the question that each of us needs to be confronted with is have you repented? 00:20:24.319 --> 00:20:28.319 Don't deflect and Jesus is doing here. 00:20:49.920 --> 00:20:55.680 Jesus is taking the finger of these people and he's pointing it right back at them. 00:20:57.119 --> 00:21:02.000 Stop wondering about the eternal state of the Galileans. 00:21:02.480 --> 00:21:09.519 Stop pondering about the group of 18 that died, and ask yourself the most important question. 00:21:10.079 --> 00:21:12.400 Have you turned from your sin? 00:21:12.960 --> 00:21:16.480 Because if not, you will likewise perish. 00:21:17.119 --> 00:21:24.400 Now this brings up a huge theological question, which brings us to the second part of our passage. 00:21:25.119 --> 00:21:36.400 If humanity is called to repent, but so many have not, why hasn't God destroyed them? 00:21:38.319 --> 00:21:45.039 Why does God still allow unrepentant people to live and flourish? 00:21:45.200 --> 00:21:52.319 It's the age long question why doesn't God take all of the unrepentant people out of the world? 00:21:53.279 --> 00:22:04.319 So after showing us the human side of repentance, which is urgent and immediate, Jesus Now gives us insight to the divine side of repentance. 00:22:04.559 --> 00:22:18.319 In verses six through nine, he says, And he told this parable A man had a fig tree planted by his vineyard, and he came seeking fruit on it, and found none. 00:22:18.559 --> 00:22:27.920 And he said to the vine dresser, Look, for three years now I've been coming to seek fruit on this fig tree, and I can't find none. 00:22:28.160 --> 00:22:29.279 Cut it down. 00:22:29.680 --> 00:22:32.079 Why should it use up the ground? 00:22:32.319 --> 00:22:42.079 And he answered him, Sir, let it alone this year also until I dig around it and put on manure. 00:22:42.960 --> 00:22:50.559 Then if it should bear fruit next year, well and good, but if not, then you can cut it down. 00:22:51.359 --> 00:22:53.920 So this parable is very simple. 00:22:54.400 --> 00:22:58.559 Okay, a man plants a fig tree by his vineyard. 00:22:58.799 --> you rip it out of the ground and you burn it. 00:23:17.200 --> 00:23:19.839 Or one time I just ran the thing over with the mower. 00:23:21.200 --> 00:23:25.920 So in this parable, the owner is fed up, saying, Look, I've tried. 00:23:26.079 --> 00:23:27.759 It's time to move on here. 00:23:28.079 --> 00:23:31.920 This worthless tree is just taking up space at this point. 00:23:32.079 --> 00:23:34.160 It's not even pretty to look at. 00:23:34.559 --> 00:23:37.200 But the vine dresser is patient. 00:23:37.839 --> 00:23:40.160 He's not giving up on it yet. 00:23:40.480 --> 00:23:44.720 And he says, Let's try to nourish it some more. 00:23:45.200 --> 00:23:47.039 Let's feed it some more. 00:23:47.440 --> 00:23:52.799 Let's give it some extra care and attention before we cut it down. to me, hand me a track, and say, Hey man, I see you're struggling, but Jesus wants you to know that there's forgiveness, and he wants you to give up your life and follow him. 00:25:36.319 --> 00:25:38.480 And I gave them the middle finger. 00:25:39.039 --> 00:25:44.000 Or the time I was at a drug house and I saw a Bible laying on the shelf. 00:25:44.240 --> 00:25:52.240 I remember I grabbed it, I opened it up, and I started reading it, and I just felt like the Lord was saying, Come, come to me. 00:25:53.119 --> 00:25:59.759 And I knew it and I heard it, and I outright said, No, not right now. 00:26:00.240 --> 00:26:12.319 I remember another time puking in my friend's backyard, dope sick, staring at the ground, I saw this piece of jewelry that had a cross on it that said Calvary. 00:26:13.039 --> 00:26:19.039 And I said in my heart, I don't want your love, nor do I deserve it. 00:26:19.519 --> 00:26:29.920 And time and time again, God revealed himself to me, he made his call of repentance very clear, and I blatantly ignored it. 00:26:30.480 --> 00:26:40.000 Could you imagine, church, if God destroyed you the moment you rejected his first call to repentance?
