probably take me all year, I will be preaching through the letter of James. 00:00:14.560 --> 00:00:24.480 Now I'm excited to preach through this letter, not because James is my name, but because I've never actually done an in-depth study of James. 00:00:24.719 --> 00:00:33.039 Actually, if I'm being honest, James always intimidates me because it's uh super convicting, super practical. 00:00:34.000 --> 00:00:42.960 So it has been a tremendous blessing for me, and as I preach through it this year, I really hope that it will be a blessing to you guys as well. 00:00:43.359 --> 00:01:00.960 But at the end of the day, um, you can't really go wrong preaching any book of the Bible, because as 2 Timothy 3.16 says, all scripture is inspired by God and is profitable for teaching and correcting and rebuking and training in righteousness. 00:01:01.439 --> 00:01:04.640 So turn with me, if you will, to the letter of James. 00:01:04.799 --> 00:01:08.400 James is after Hebrews, it's before 1 Peter. 00:01:09.200 --> 00:01:13.599 And this morning we will be looking at the first 12 verses. 00:01:14.400 --> 00:01:23.519 And before we dig into these verses, we need to first ask the question: who wrote this letter and why? 00:01:24.560 --> 00:01:29.680 Well, the author in verse 1, if you look at verse 1, the author is very clear. 00:01:29.840 --> 00:01:34.719 It says, James, a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ. 00:01:34.959 --> 00:01:40.319 Now, most theologians agree that this is Jesus' half-brother James. 00:01:40.560 --> 00:01:42.640 This is not James the Apostle. 00:01:42.879 --> 00:01:50.079 So if you remember, during Jesus' life, we are told that even his own brothers did not believe him. 00:01:50.239 --> 00:01:52.319 We know that from John chapter 7. 00:01:52.560 --> 00:02:00.879 But after Jesus died on the cross and was buried and was resurrected, he appeared to his half-brother James. 00:02:01.040 --> 00:02:03.760 We know that from 1 Corinthians 15. 00:02:04.000 --> 00:02:06.159 And James was converted. 00:02:06.719 --> 00:02:09.840 So James became a believer in Jesus. 00:02:10.159 --> 00:02:15.120 And not long after, he became a leader of the Jerusalem church. 00:02:15.360 --> 00:02:17.360 So he is an elder of the church. 00:02:17.599 --> 00:02:21.039 He is referred to in Galatians as a pillar. 00:02:21.360 --> 00:02:27.840 He was instrumental in motivating Jewish believers to share the gospel with Gentiles. 00:02:28.000 --> 00:02:30.000 We know that from Acts 15. 00:02:30.400 --> 00:02:40.000 And his primary ministry, because he's in a church in Jerusalem, was ministering almost exclusively to Jewish Christians. 00:02:41.280 --> 00:02:53.360 However, sometime between AD 50 and AD 60, persecution exploded in Jerusalem against Jewish believers. 00:02:53.840 --> 00:03:09.199 And so the religious leaders, the same ones that killed Jesus, most likely the Pharisees and the Sadducees and the experts of the law, they were upset about this Jesus movement that it was continuing to grow. 00:03:09.759 --> 00:03:19.039 And so they were upset that Jews in the holy city were abandoning Judaism for Christianity. 00:03:19.199 --> 00:03:20.879 It's bad for business. 00:03:21.199 --> 00:03:26.400 And so they made life miserable for these Jewish Christians. 00:03:26.639 --> 00:03:28.960 They banned them from the synagogue. 00:03:40.319 --> 00:03:45.759 So James writes this letter to the 12 tribes in the dispersion. 00:03:45.840 --> 00:03:51.360 Some translations, those who are scattered, the 12 tribes that are scattered. 00:03:51.599 --> 00:04:01.039 And he is writing to these Jewish believers who were fleeing from persecution and scattered throughout most of the Mediterranean world, really. 00:04:01.520 --> 00:04:06.159 And the purpose of James's letter is to encourage these believers. 00:04:06.479 --> 00:04:19.759 Because James knew that when trouble happens in the Christian life, there is a tendency to shrink back, to become passive, and to keep our faith private. 00:04:20.720 --> 00:04:34.720 And so James writes this letter that is extremely practical, it's extremely ethical, and it's tangible to help motivate these believers to persevere and to live out their faith. 00:04:34.959 --> 00:04:40.399 So he doesn't want them to take their foot off the gas because of their adversity. 00:04:40.959 --> 00:04:48.959 He wants them to reflect a transformed life in Christ no matter the circumstances. 00:04:49.199 --> 00:04:51.360 And so that is our context. 00:04:52.079 --> 00:05:00.480 And so the first things that James deals with in these first 12 verses is trials, trials. 00:05:01.360 --> 00:05:07.839 Right off the bat, James has something to say to these Christians about their suffering. 00:05:08.160 --> 00:05:27.839 And the first thing he does, being inspired by the Holy Spirit, is he looks at all their problems, he looks at all their misfortunes, and he writes in verse 2 Consider it joy, my brothers and sisters, when you face trials of various kinds. 00:05:28.879 --> 00:05:31.759 This almost comes as a shock, doesn't it? 00:05:32.000 --> 00:05:49.680 It almost seems insensitive or offensive, kind of like a trumpet blast in our ears after we've been through hell and back, because we might expect something warmer, like, hey guys, I'm so sorry that you've been persecuted, but that's not what James says. 00:05:50.000 --> 00:05:59.680 He opens his letter by saying, consider it a joy, my brothers and sisters, when you face trials of many kinds. 00:05:59.920 --> 00:06:04.959 He looks at these Christians, Christians who have lost their jobs, they've lost their homes. 00:06:06.000 --> 00:06:09.439 Some of them are have lost loved ones. 00:06:09.680 --> 00:06:15.920 And he says, I want you to consider all of your current troubles a joy. 00:06:16.480 --> 00:06:20.639 And this isn't a suggestion, it's not even an encouragement. 00:06:20.959 --> 00:06:28.160 This grammatically is a commandment that James is communicating to these believers and to us. 00:06:29.040 --> 00:06:31.920 Now, this isn't a new teaching in Scripture. 00:06:32.160 --> 00:06:39.439 Jesus tells us in Matthew 5 to rejoice in our persecutions and be exceedingly glad. 00:06:39.920 --> 00:06:48.319 Peter tells us in his first epistle to rejoice in as much as you participate in the sufferings of Christ. 00:06:48.639 --> 00:06:53.600 And Paul tells us in Romans 5 that we should rejoice in our sufferings. 00:06:53.759 --> 00:06:56.720 So this isn't a new or a strange teaching. 00:06:56.879 --> 00:06:58.720 It's not a new doctrine. 00:06:59.279 --> 00:07:09.759 Now, I will say to the natural man and to the flesh, this idea of having joy in adversity is absurd. 00:07:10.560 --> 00:07:15.040 Because the world says it's a joy if you avoid trials. 00:07:15.759 --> 00:07:19.920 And society says it's a joy if you can escape trials. 00:07:21.120 --> 00:07:27.759 And if this world is all there is, then adversity is nothing less than a curse. 00:07:27.920 --> 00:07:31.040 It's something to be dodged at all costs. 00:07:31.199 --> 00:07:38.720 And even our own flesh loves it when we can maintain comfort and dodge suffering. 00:07:39.279 --> 00:07:41.439 But scripture says the exact opposite. 00:07:41.600 --> 00:07:47.680 Christians should have joy when they experience various kinds of trials. 00:07:49.040 --> 00:07:52.800 And we have biblical examples of this throughout Scripture. 00:07:53.120 --> 00:07:56.079 Take, for example, the Apostle Paul. 00:07:56.399 --> 00:07:59.759 He rejoiced in his afflictions after he was arrested. 00:07:59.920 --> 00:08:02.079 We know that from Colossians 1. 00:08:02.319 --> 00:08:08.079 Or Peter and John, they rejoiced after they were arrested, and then they were flogged. 00:08:08.240 --> 00:08:10.480 We know that from Acts chapter 5. 00:08:10.800 --> 00:08:19.519 And even our Lord Jesus Christ, for the joy set before him, he endured the cross of suffering. 00:08:19.680 --> 00:08:22.000 We know that from Hebrews 12. 00:08:22.480 --> 00:08:25.120 And so this isn't wishful thinking. 00:08:25.360 --> 00:08:27.680 This isn't something that is unattainable. 00:08:27.839 --> 00:08:32.320 This isn't something set afot set aside for the spiritually elite. 00:08:32.960 --> 00:08:39.519 This is the universal expectation for the children of God who have the Spirit of God. 00:08:39.919 --> 00:08:42.080 Joy in our trials. 00:08:42.559 --> 00:08:48.720 It's commanded, it's expected, and it's available to us in Christ Jesus. 00:08:49.600 --> 00:09:00.639 And so, as hard as this might be to hear, the reality is this is that Christians will face multicolored trials in this life. 00:09:01.279 --> 00:09:04.240 The prosperity preachers are wrong. 00:09:04.480 --> 00:09:06.799 Scripture is so clear on this. 00:09:07.039 --> 00:09:11.519 We must face many tribulations to enter the kingdom of God. 00:09:11.759 --> 00:09:15.440 That's what we're told in Acts 14, 22. 00:09:15.759 --> 00:09:21.360 Jesus himself tells us that in this world we will have tribulation. 00:09:21.600 --> 00:09:23.840 That's John 16, 33. 00:09:24.320 --> 00:09:31.840 And Paul tells us that every everyone who lives a godly life will, will face persecution. 00:09:32.000 --> 00:09:34.399 That's 2 Timothy chapter 3. 00:09:34.720 --> 00:09:39.679 And so the question isn't, will I experience suffering? 00:09:39.919 --> 00:09:42.960 If you are a Christian, you will face suffering. 00:09:43.120 --> 00:09:44.320 That's certain. 00:09:44.559 --> 00:09:46.559 That's something that we all have in common. 00:09:46.720 --> 00:09:51.279 Even scientists say that we don't even see colors the same. 00:09:51.759 --> 00:09:57.600 There's many things that we don't have in common, but something that we all have in common is that we will suffer. 00:09:57.759 --> 00:10:03.039 And so the question we need to be asking is how will you suffer? 00:10:03.759 --> 00:10:08.480 Will you suffer with joy in Christ and overcome? 00:10:09.759 --> 00:10:17.039 Or will you suffer like the rest of the unbelieving world in self-pity and anger and hopelessness? 00:10:18.320 --> 00:10:27.440 See, God is more interested in our attitude and in our response to trials than he is about the nature of our trials. 00:10:27.919 --> 00:10:30.799 He's sovereign over our adversity. 00:10:31.200 --> 00:10:35.840 At the flick of his hand, all of our troubles could go away. 00:10:36.240 --> 00:10:40.960 At the whisper of his voice, he could make mountains move. 00:10:41.440 --> 00:10:48.159 So he determines the length and the severity and the outcome of our trials. 00:10:52.320 --> 00:10:53.759 He's got that under control. 00:10:54.240 --> 00:11:00.080 What he is more concerned about is our attitude, our character, and our response. 00:11:00.240 --> 00:11:03.440 He is concerned about our reliance upon him. 00:11:04.000 --> 00:11:07.759 He's concerned about our joy in him during these times. 00:11:08.159 --> 00:11:12.559 So it doesn't matter how many trials you have this morning. 00:11:12.720 --> 00:11:28.480 It doesn't matter if they're big or small, long-term, short-term, temporary, chronic, the biblical and the arresting command is brothers and sisters, consider it a pure joy when you face trials of many kinds. 00:11:28.960 --> 00:11:32.480 But the question really is why? 00:11:32.960 --> 00:11:33.919 I mean, why? 00:11:34.799 --> 00:11:46.000 Who in the world looks at an empty bank account and pull Molly aside and say, hey honey, let's let's just consider this a joy, that we got no money. 00:11:46.799 --> 00:11:47.120 Okay? 00:11:47.840 --> 00:12:00.399 Who in the world gets persecuted, loses their job, and says, hey family, let's gather around the table, let's give thanks, and let's have joy that daddy just lost his job and that we're being persecuted. 00:12:00.639 --> 00:12:01.039 Right? 00:12:01.200 --> 00:12:06.799 Who faces sickness or chronic pain and grief and says, I'm going to rejoice? 00:12:06.960 --> 00:12:08.000 Who does that? 00:12:08.240 --> 00:12:10.480 Why would anyone do that? 00:12:10.879 --> 00:12:15.279 Well, James tells us the reason for our joy in verses three and four. 00:12:15.600 --> 00:12:31.200 He says, Consider it a joy, knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance, and let endurance have its perfect result, so that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing. 00:12:32.639 --> 00:12:39.519 So we can have joy in our troubles because it will refine your faith. 00:12:39.759 --> 00:12:45.039 And when your faith is refined, you will grow spiritually. 00:12:45.279 --> 00:12:50.399 And when you grow spiritually, you become more mature in Christ. 00:12:50.559 --> 00:12:59.840 And when you are more mature in Christ, you are entirely satisfied in Him and in Him alone, lacking nothing. 00:13:00.399 --> 00:13:07.519 So, in other words, we can have joy in our present trials when we have the future outcome in mind. 00:13:08.000 --> 00:13:15.840 We can rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that we will come out the other end more like Jesus. 00:13:16.320 --> 00:13:37.360 So no matter what comes our way, no matter how big or bad the situation is, whether it's a sink full of dishes or whether it's nuclear war, we can have joy and say, this will test my faith, this will produce in me endurance, making me mature in Christ and completely satisfied in him. 00:13:37.759 --> 00:13:39.440 That's the 00:14:14.799 He's telling us to have joy in our trials and to have a positive biblical perspective about it, knowing that God will use it in such a way that it will actually develop your faith and not grief, when your finances dwindle and you're unsure how you're going to provide for your family, when you're diagnosed with a sickness, uncertain on how you're going to manage through life with the pain. 00:16:57.600 --> 00:17:11.680 When you're experiencing spiritual warfare and you feel like you're losing your mind, you can rise up in the power of the Holy Spirit and cling to the joy that is this is in God's plan, but one thing I do know that when I get to the other side of the trial, I will come out with a greater faith, a newfound maturity, and a deeper intimacy with God that I to the pleasures of sin to alleviate the pain? 00:19:18.240 --> 00:19:29.119 Are you drawing joy from Christ in your hardships, or are you in the flesh complaining and accusing God of not being good we should respond in verses five through eight. 00:20:00.240 --> 00:20:11.839 He says, but if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives to all generously and without reproach, and it will be given to him. 00:20:12.160 --> 00:20:21.279 But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like the wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. 00:20:21.599 --> 00:20:24.720 That person should not expect to receive anything from the Lord. 00:20:24.880 --> 00:20:29.599 Such a person is double-minded and unstable in all they do. 00:20:30.400 --> 00:20:35.839 So what we need most during difficult times in life is wisdom. 00:20:36.240 --> 00:20:37.680 We need wisdom. 00:20:37.839 --> 00:20:48.880 I mean, seriously, if I get sick or ministry fails or a tragedy --> 00:21:12.720 And so our response in these moments is not asking God to take away the issue per se, but a lot of the times we need to ask God for wisdom so that we can respond appropriately and 00:22:48.480 So if there is any prayer that God's going to answer, if there's a prayer that's going to get his attention, if there's a prayer that's aligned to his will, a prayer that he would even answer for the weakest Christian on earth, it is this when his children ask him for wisdom. 00:22:48.720 --> 00:22:51.279 And if you don't believe me, ask Solomon. 00:22:51.519 --> 00:22:54.880 It
