Welcome to Legacy Starts with Dirt. I'm Lois, and this is where we get our hands into the questions that matter. The ones under the will, under the trust, under everything that looks like it's already settled. I don't have children to carry my name forward. For a long time, I figured that meant legacy just wasn't going to be my thing. Then my sisters and I ended up with three names on one deed. A piece of land in Montana that none of us can do anything with unless all three of us agree. And one question wouldn't leave us alone. How do you pass something down fairly? When fair isn't the same as equal? And when the people you're leaving it to are going to disagree with each other, and most likely with you. This land is where we all ended up after we lost our father. It's where we gather every chance we get. My nephew built a fort out there when he was twelve just to prove he could survive a night in it. And his grandparents stood on the porch and watched, just in case. That's the kind of thing a deed can't hold on to. And it's the kind of thing that disappears if nobody writes it down on purpose. And that's what this is: real conversations. Some with my family, some with other families and advisors doing the work in the real world, about what it takes to build something that outlives you.
