morning on a day when our pastor is out of town and when an unprecedented disaster is affecting our city. 00:01:10.319 --> 00:01:12.640 So it's a pretty heavy thing. 00:01:32.480 --> 00:01:43.359 And I think that I want to pivot a little bit this morning and share some thoughts that are on my heart that I believe the Spirit's prompting me to share that really relate to what we're facing as a city. reading out of that. 00:02:05.200 --> 00:02:13.039 And Psalm 46 is just a fabulous Psalm of great comfort in trying times. 00:02:13.120 --> 00:02:14.960 And I think maybe we need to hear that right acknowledging that you are overall, and that you are the one who is our rock and our steadfast fortress in the midst of uh just disaster and things that afflict us in our lives that we can't control. 00:02:37.680 --> 00:02:51.759 And Lord, so at this time we come to you and we ask that you would speak to us from your word, you'd fix our eyes where they need to be fixed this morning, you'd encourage our hearts as only you can, and that you would show us how you would want us to live in response. 00:02:52.000 --> 00:02:53.439 In Jesus' name we pray. 00:02:53.759 --> 00:02:54.400 Amen. 00:02:57.840 --> 00:03:12.319 Let me start by reading Psalm 46, and it says here that God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. 00:03:13.199 --> 00:03:24.479 Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam, and the mountains quake with surging. 00:03:25.039 --> 00:03:30.719 There is a river whose streams make glad the city of a God, the holy place where the Most High dwells. 00:03:31.039 --> 00:03:34.560 God is within her, she will not fall. 00:03:34.879 --> 00:03:37.439 God will help her at break of day. 00:03:38.080 --> 00:03:43.680 Nations are in an uproar, kingdoms fall, he lifts his voice, and the earth melts. 00:03:44.560 --> 00:03:46.639 The Lord Almighty is with us. 00:03:46.960 --> 00:03:49.520 The God of Jacob is our fortress. 00:03:49.919 --> 00:03:53.199 Come and see what the Lord has done, the desolations he's brought on the earth. 00:03:53.280 --> 00:04:12.080 --> 00:04:14.800 O church, the Lord Almighty is with us. 00:04:15.120 --> 00:04:18.879 The God of Jacob is our fortress. 00:04:19.519 --> 00:04:21.439 This is the word of the Lord. 00:04:25.360 --> 00:04:38.480 What encourages me personally so much from the psalm, there are many things, but that phrase there at the beginning that God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. 00:04:39.759 --> 00:04:44.800 The ESV translate that a very present help in trouble. 00:04:46.000 --> 00:04:57.920 That whenever there's trouble, whenever there's difficulty, whenever there's trials that we're going through in life, and we all go through those, that God is not absent, but he's present. 00:04:58.399 --> 00:05:07.120 And he's not just present half-heartedly or kind of one foot in and one foot out, he's fully present. 00:05:07.759 --> 00:05:09.360 He's very present. 00:05:09.839 --> 00:05:11.759 And he's ever present. 00:05:12.800 --> 00:05:23.360 And so what I want to share with you this morning is just some thoughts, some very short thoughts about presence in the midst of suffering and hardship. 00:05:24.000 --> 00:05:32.800 And how we have a God who is with us, even when it's all falling apart, and even when we don't understand why. 00:05:33.439 --> 00:05:37.519 That's kind of the image that's being created by the writing of the Psalm here, right? 00:05:37.759 --> 00:05:47.759 I mean, you have mountains falling into the heart of the sea, waters roaring and uh foaming, uh, mountains quaking and surging, earthquakes. 00:05:47.920 --> 00:05:52.000 You have things are falling apart in the writer's life. 00:05:52.160 --> 00:05:55.360 Things are falling apart in the world. 00:05:55.759 --> 00:06:06.160 And I think maybe in Spokane right now we feel a little bit like things are falling apart because of the devastation of these fires and how it's affecting our beloved community and people that we love in this community. 00:06:07.920 --> 00:06:10.000 There's some shaking going on. 00:06:10.480 --> 00:06:16.160 There's some roaring going on, there's some crumbling going on. 00:06:17.439 --> 00:06:22.000 And the temptation would be to say, where is God in all this? 00:06:22.079 --> 00:06:23.279 Isn't he over it all? 00:06:23.439 --> 00:06:24.959 Isn't he above it all? 00:06:25.920 --> 00:06:26.560 Yes. 00:06:29.279 --> 00:06:31.439 So where is God in all this? 00:06:32.800 --> 00:06:37.600 Why are people that we love that believe in him losing their homes? 00:06:40.160 --> 00:06:49.600 Why are people that have walked faithfully with the Lord for many, many years going through suffering and difficulty right now and in a time of great fear? 00:06:51.920 --> 00:07:03.759 Brothers and sisters, all I can tell you is this in my life, I feel like the Lord has shown me over the years that sometimes it is not necessary to understand because it's beyond our understanding. 00:07:04.000 --> 00:07:05.600 But it is necessary to believe. 00:07:05.759 --> 00:07:06.959 Are you with me there? 00:07:07.920 --> 00:07:09.839 It's necessary to trust. 00:07:10.000 --> 00:07:19.199 And I think that's what the writer is calling us to here in this psalm: that even when things are falling apart, yes, God is over it. 00:07:19.600 --> 00:07:29.360 He's on his throne, but he's also right, smack, dab in the midst of this by being present. 00:07:31.759 --> 00:07:41.920 He's an ever-present, a very present, an up-close and present God in the midst of it all falling apart. 00:07:45.680 --> 00:07:46.800 Verse 7 is the key. 00:07:57.360 The Lord Almighty is with you. 00:07:58.480 --> 00:08:06.560 The Lord Almighty is with Eric and Ilsa right now in a very special and a very present way beyond our understanding. 00:08:06.800 --> 00:08:08.079 I believe that. 00:08:08.480 --> 00:08:19.920 And it doesn't minimize the suffering, it doesn't mitigate the loss, but what it does is it focuses like a laser beam on the rock, solid foundation of what it's really all about in the end. 00:08:20.639 --> 00:08:25.839 The Lord is with right in the midst of the hardship, right in the midst of the suffering. 00:08:30.319 --> 00:08:36.240 It says there in verse 8 or 7 that the Lord is with us, the God of Jacob is our fortress. 00:08:36.879 --> 00:08:41.200 That phrase got my attention a few years ago, and I decided to think about that. 00:08:41.360 --> 00:08:43.039 The God of Jacob, the God of Jacob. 00:08:43.120 --> 00:08:52.000 And so I think of how has Jacob resonated or his life spoken about this idea of God being with us in the midst of suffering and difficulty. 00:08:52.240 --> 00:08:55.120 And I made my way back to the book of Genesis. 00:08:55.279 --> 00:09:00.159 And as I was reading the story of Jacob, I think came across this in chapter 28. 00:09:00.320 --> 00:09:06.320 And we won't go into all the detail, but just very briefly, Jacob has not been the best uh individual. 00:09:06.399 --> 00:09:14.000 He's kind of uh connived his way into stealing the birthright from his brother, and now his brother Esau hates him and wants to kill him. 00:09:14.080 --> 00:09:16.080 And so, in a sense, he's on the run. 00:09:16.320 --> 00:09:21.679 And he's on the run to a far country to some distant relatives to hopefully find a wife. 00:09:21.759 --> 00:09:23.759 And maybe that's going to make everything better. 00:09:24.000 --> 00:09:37.840 But on during the journey, it says he left Beersheba, uh, verse 10 of chapter 28 of Genesis, and he stayed the night there, and he lay down and put his head down on a rock to sleep, and he dreamed. 00:09:38.080 --> 00:09:47.120 And he said, The dream was of this ladder coming from earth to heaven, and on the ladder were angels going back and forth from heaven down to earth and then back up to heaven again. 00:09:47.360 --> 00:09:54.399 And the Lord spoke to him in that dream and said, I'm the Lord, the God of Abraham, your father, the God of Isaac. 00:09:54.559 --> 00:10:03.679 I'm gonna give you to you and your offspring this land, and I'm going to be with you, and I'm going to keep you wherever you go. 00:10:05.679 --> 00:10:10.960 And it says there in verse 16, when Jacob awoke from sleep, this is what he said. 00:10:11.120 --> 00:10:12.320 And this is instructive. 00:10:12.480 --> 00:10:17.279 He said, Surely the Lord is in this place, and I was not aware of it. 00:10:18.159 --> 00:10:24.960 Now he takes that so literally, he actually sets up a little stone there on altar and calls the place Bethel, which means house of God. 00:10:26.240 --> 00:10:31.200 But that phrase is a powerful phrase, folks, because surely the Lord is in this place. 00:10:31.360 --> 00:10:33.039 And I didn't realize it. 00:10:34.879 --> 00:10:35.679 Can I say this? 00:10:35.919 --> 00:10:42.159 Surely the Lord is in the midst of even our darkest valleys and our deepest suffering? 00:10:42.799 --> 00:10:49.679 He's not causing it, he's not rejoicing in it, but he's in the midst of it because he's with us. 00:10:52.480 --> 00:10:58.240 Even though I walk the valley of the shadow of death, you are with me. 00:10:58.720 --> my appendix ruptured. 00:11:12.399 --> 00:11:16.159 And if you've ever had appendicitis and had to get it removed, you know it's painful. 00:11:16.240 --> 00:11:19.279 Uh, it's even more painful if your appendix ruptures. 00:11:19.600 --> 00:11:27.759 And uh, so I had spent a day uh with severe pains at home and another day with severe pains, thinking it was a stomach flu, it wasn't getting any better. 00:11:27.919 --> 00:11:31.039 Finally, Sunday morning, Sandy said, I'm taking you to the emergency room. 00:11:31.120 --> 00:11:34.480 She took me in and they took a cat skin and said, Yep, your appendix has ruptured. 00:11:34.559 --> 00:11:36.480 We need to get you into surgery, ASAP. 00:11:36.799 --> 00:11:38.000 They got me in. 00:11:38.320 --> 00:11:41.600 And uh removing the appendix was not the big deal. 00:11:41.679 --> 00:11:46.639 The big part was all the infection that had exploded and spread throughout my abdomen and my system. 00:11:46.879 --> 00:11:50.879 So I was literally hooked up for a week to an IV of antibiotics. 00:11:51.039 --> 00:11:53.440 And I was in a great deal of pain. 00:11:53.840 --> 00:12:00.080 And I think that week the Lord taught me so much about suffering and so much about his presence in suffering. 00:12:00.159 --> 00:12:03.759 And one of the ways he taught me was through uh one of the doctors. 00:12:04.000 --> 00:12:20.000 My surgeon, bless her heart, wonderful surgeon, but maybe not the greatest bedside manner, uh, would come in and check on me every day for five minutes, and she usually had four or five medical interns with clipboards taking notes and learning, and she'd poke me and prod me and ask how I was doing, and then she'd leave. 00:12:20.399 --> 00:12:27.039 But there was this one attending physician, a middle-aged gentleman named Eve, who would linger. 00:12:28.159 --> 00:12:34.720 And Eve would ask me how I'm doing, but he would more than that, he would encourage me, and he'd just sit with me. 00:12:36.080 --> 00:12:42.240 He'd just sit with me, sometimes for 20, 30 minutes, and just tell me, Kate, it's gonna be okay, you're gonna get through this. 00:12:44.320 --> 00:12:47.600 Well, as the week wore on, Eves would make these daily visits to me. 00:12:48.720 --> 00:12:50.399 And this is what he would he would do. 00:12:50.559 --> 00:12:56.000 He'd just sit there with me and encourage me, listen to me, and be with me. 00:12:56.960 --> 00:13:00.000 He was a presence, a faithful presence. 00:13:00.399 --> 00:13:07.039 And so near the end of the week, I knew I was gonna be discharged the next day, and when he visited, I said, Eves, I just want to thank you. 00:13:07.600 --> 00:13:08.879 You have been like an angel. 00:13:08.960 --> 00:13:10.240 I mean, you've been a godsend. it. 00:13:18.799 --> 00:13:32.320 He said, Well, you see, I understand a little bit about what you're going through because I was when I was a little bit younger, I had to have a bone marrow transplant and it went wrong. 00:13:33.039 --> 00:13:35.759 And I lived at the hospital for three years. 00:13:36.639 --> 00:13:37.759 And my jaw dropped. 00:13:40.000 --> 00:13:41.440 I said, You lived at the hospital. 00:13:42.240 --> 00:13:44.960 He said, Yeah, I didn't leave for three years. 00:13:47.279 --> 00:14:01.120 And here he was sometime later, back at the hospital, giving in a way that only he could, because he himself had walked that road and suffered. 00:14:02.639 --> 00:14:11.519 And he was able to encourage me in ways that were beyond the way anybody else could, by his presence. 00:14:12.799 --> 00:14:23.200 Folks, we have a savior, we have a savior Jesus, who is the ultimate, ultimate embodiment of God with us. 00:14:23.440 --> 00:14:26.480 In fact, that's one of the titles that's given to him at his birth, right? 00:14:26.559 --> 00:14:29.600 He is Emmanuel, which means God with us. 00:14:30.559 --> 00:14:39.679 He is the God who is so with us, so for us, that he is with us in every aspect of our humanity, all except sin. 00:14:41.440 --> 00:14:57.279 Experiencing everything we would ever experience as human beings, from birth and the trauma of birth to growing up as an infant and having to go through those adolescent teen years and go through adulthood and even to death, and not just any death, but death on a cross. 00:14:57.600 --> 00:14:59.440 Death in the most horrific way. 00:14:59.759 --> 00:15:03.840 Jesus has lived the full spectrum of the human experience. 00:15:04.159 --> 00:15:11.360 And as the scriptures would say of him in Isaiah, he's familiar with suffering. 00:15:12.000 --> 00:15:21.519 And as the Hebrew writer would say, because he himself suffered, he's able to help those who are doing so themselves. 00:15:23.200 --> 00:15:27.440 There's no presence like the presence of Jesus in our lives. 00:15:28.399 --> 00:15:35.360 There's no one who will ever come closer, and there's no one who will ever always be in that place. 00:15:37.519 --> 00:15:44.240 You see, Jacob in his dream again learned that the Lord was in Bethel. 00:15:45.679 --> 00:15:49.360 But I want to apply that, that applies to everywhere. 00:15:49.600 --> 00:15:52.960 It's not just he was in Bethel, he's in this place. 00:15:54.240 --> 00:15:55.759 He's in that place. 00:15:57.519 --> 00:16:11.759 He's right back dab in that place that seems totally irredeemable, totally unsalvageable, totally nonsensical, totally filled with pain and trauma and difficulty. 00:16:12.080 --> 00:16:13.120 He's there. 00:16:14.480 --> 00:16:15.679 He's of us would say, no, that's not true. 00:16:34.559 --> 00:16:37.200 Uh life hasn't always worked out for me the way I thought it was. 00:16:37.360 --> 00:16:39.120 I didn't expect to be living where I'm living. 00:16:39.279 --> 00:16:40.720 I didn't expect to be doing what I'm doing. 00:16:40.879 --> 00:16:48.960 I didn't expect to suffer from what I'm suffering with in my own life, maybe a mental condition, or something's gone wrong with my plan for my life. 00:16:49.200 --> 00:16:53.039 Life is filled with trials and tribulations. 00:16:54.559 --> 00:17:00.559 Jesus himself said to his disciples in the Gospel of John, in this world you will have trouble. 00:17:00.639 --> 00:17:01.600 That's just reality. 00:17:01.679 --> 00:17:05.599 The world's a broken place, filled with broken people. 00:17:06.400 --> 00:17:08.160 And there's a lot of heartache. 00:17:08.400 --> 00:17:10.880 But he goes on to say this, but take heart. 00:17:11.440 --> 00:17:13.440 I've overcome the world. 00:17:14.960 --> 00:17:17.039 And that's the heart of the gospel for us. 00:17:17.200 --> 00:17:44.799 That the God who loves us so much has come to be near with us, to walk with us, even to die for us, so that He could live, and He could live with us and in us now and be ever present in everything we will ever face and be our ultimate guide and our ultimate comfort and our ultimate insurance that we will get through it. 00:17:49.519 --> 00:17:53.200 Jacob learned that the Lord is in this place and he wasn't aware of it. 00:17:54.319 --> 00:18:03.920 I learned a little bit about the Lord being in a place that I was not aware of when I was in the hospital through the example of Eve's. 00:18:04.160 --> 00:18:08.240 But it makes me think of some other folks that have experienced this as well. 00:18:08.640 --> 00:18:12.960 In the book of Daniel, there's some guys that went through a fire. 00:18:13.839 --> 00:18:16.640 Their names are Meshach, Shadrach, and Abednego. 00:18:17.599 --> 00:18:19.119 And you guys know the story. 00:18:19.279 --> 00:18:27.839 But in Daniel 3, King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon builds this enormous gold statue and commands everyone to bow down and worship it when these bells ring. 00:18:27.920 --> 00:18:30.319 And if you don't, he's going to cast you into this furnace of fire. 00:18:30.480 --> 00:18:35.519 Well, these three devout Jewish believers refuse to bow down. 00:18:35.680 --> 00:18:50.559 Or gets to Nebuchadnezzar, next thing you know, he's got Meshach Shabbar in a bedigo rounded up, and he gets the fire heated up and he says, Meshach, Shadrach in Abedigo, pay homage to me. 00:18:51.599 --> 00:18:52.960 Fall down and worship me. 00:18:53.039 --> 00:18:54.960 And if you don't, I'm gonna throw you in the fire. 00:18:55.119 --> 00:18:57.200 And the response, of course, is a classic. 00:18:57.599 --> 00:19:04.480 They say, Oh, king, uh you know, you have no power over us ultimately. 00:19:05.599 --> 00:19:07.759 Our fate is in the hands of God. 00:19:08.880 --> 00:19:11.920 And he's able to deliver us from the fire. 00:19:12.799 --> 00:19:18.799 But even if he doesn't, we're still not gonna bow down and worship you. 00:19:21.599 --> 00:19:30.240 And Nebuchadnezzar is enraged, and so he has them bound and he has the furnace heated multiple times hotter than it usually is, and he he throws them in. 00:19:31.359 --> 00:19:32.799 And you know the story. 00:19:33.119 --> 00:19:38.160 After a few minutes, he peers in and he says, Didn't we throw three guys in there? 00:19:38.559 --> 00:19:44.079 I see a fourth walking around with them, and he looks like a son of the gods. 00:19:45.839 --> 00:20:00.400 And so he shouts, Meshach, Shadrach, and Bedigo, come out!
