Jeff & Dave Save the World. This is how it begins...
SPEAKER_00
Okay. All right. Well, hi, Dave. Hi, Jeff. And here we are to save the world. And one podcast at a time, I mean. One podcast at a time. That's right. I mean, how else do you do it? I mean, it's like every day is a new opportunity for solving the world's problems. And here we are.
SPEAKER_01
I totally agree with you. And let's talk, let's tell our uh viewers a little bit about ourselves. Talk about your in illustrious journalism and writing history.
SPEAKER_00
Okay, so uh yeah, who we are. I am a former newspaper editor, reporter, columnist, uh, also a journalism instructor. And for the last year, I've been writing a newsletter here in Florida, mostly on politics and current events. I also write a column for Florida Weekly, and when I'm not doing that, I write mystery novels. So mostly I spend all of my time at a keyboard. So this is new to me. I'm, you know, I'm not a former radio guy like you, so I'm not used to talking. So this will be interesting to see how this plays out. My hope is that as awkward as it may be at the beginning, we get better. Someday I hope to aspire to be as good as you, but you know, we'll be able to do that.
SPEAKER_01
Well, that's easy enough to accomplish. My background is 55 years in broadcast, including 21 years as a top-rated talk show host in Southwest Florida. I come to Southwest Florida courtesy of Michigan and uh California, neither state of which wanted me. So I thought I would just move to Florida where everybody's wanted. Yeah, right. And what is one of the things that we've decided we wanted to do is sort of in a tongue-in-cheek way talk about how we can fix stuff that might be broken or bring it to people's attention who might not be aware of it, or otherwise just express our unabated outrage at stuff. Agreed?
SPEAKER_00
Yeah, well, we have plenty to be outraged about, you know. I think that we do. I know. And I actually think, you know, one of the cool things about this is that just teeing up these topics and you know, we can, you know, we can tell people what we think about them. Uh but I think that it's important that we have a contribution to the civic agenda in a way, you know. So if we want to talk about, say, this I'll tell you right now, I'm writing a column about all of these Cuban expats here in Florida that were herded aboard an airplane, and next thing you know, they found themselves in Africa, wondering what the hell is going on.
SPEAKER_01
I do not understand why you deport somebody to a country from whence they did not come. Right.
SPEAKER_00
And so I've been doing some research on that, and one of the problems that uh now I have no sympathy for this, but one of the problems that ICE has is that sometimes countries don't want people back. And we have treaties and laws that say you can't send somebody back where they're going to be killed, right?
SPEAKER_01
You know, so if you have Haiti, for example.
SPEAKER_00
Right, yeah, or Cuba or Iran, Iran, sorry. Um so it's it's more complicated than it sounds, but then again, it's a complication that we have made for ourselves, right? I mean, we've decided, oh, okay, we're gonna deport all these people, but now all these international rules are there, so now it's all complicated, so let's just ship them off to Africa because we've made some deals there. But we made those deals. We could have made a deal that says, hey, let's not ship them off, let's let them have due process and not do that.
SPEAKER_01
We could have done that. We could have done that. But we didn't. And these are the kind of things we want to be talking about. We might also delve into the realm of science fiction since you and I are both big science fiction fans, and we could be talking to anybody from Dr. Avi Loeb to who knows, maybe Andy Weir at some point, if we're lucky enough to get him on board. I'd love to talk to Andy Weir. I would I we could do an hour with him.
SPEAKER_00
I think so. I think so.
SPEAKER_01
So occasionally we're gonna be putting these things up on the uh web, on the on the wo the the internet tubes. The internet tubes, right. For people to suck down and listen to. And it may not always meet everybody's uh agenda, but that's okay, because if you don't piss some people off, you're not doing your job. We hope we make more people happy than upset, but you know, it could happen.
SPEAKER_00
It could happen.
SPEAKER_01
It could happen. So I'm hoping everybody'll uh check us out. You'll be able to find us on all your favorite podcasting venues from Apple Podcasts to what? Where where else are you? You did all the things.
SPEAKER_00
We're gonna be on Spotify, we're gonna be on YouTube, we're gonna be on Apple Podcasts, those are like the three major podcast locations, but I think we'll probably also end up posting these things on Twitter and Blue Sky and Facebook, and you know, because at the end of the day, what you've got here is a video, and you can post video anywhere. Right. So, you know.
SPEAKER_01
So join us. We'll be back soon, I have no doubt about it. I know you have some traveling to do, and I've got some stuff to take care of, but we will be here with more episodes of Jeff and Dave Save the World. Yay.
