It’s Heritage Breeds week at The Livestock Conservancy. This organization is one that you hear about on our podcast frequently, and for good reason. They are on the front line in the battle against extinction for some of the traditional agricultural breeds in the U.S. and abroad. The Conservancy’s mission is to do “research, education, outreach, marketing and promotion, and genetic rescues,” so we have a backup in place for animals in our agricultural production system. Diversity gives us choice, elasticity, and frankly, a greater awareness of our history and culture.
Please tune in for this podcast with an author, a historian, a veterinary scientist, a field researcher, a zoologist, a conservationist, and a public speaker. And by the way, it’s all the same person. If that weren’t enough, we can also say that she’s also an agriculturalist with two or three heritage breed flocks and herds in her backyard (I’m still trying to pronounce “Crevecoeur” properly, so as to minimize the wincing from the French speakers who might be listening. My apologies, before, during and after.).
Jeannette Beranger is Senior Program Manager at the Livestock Conservancy, and she joins us to talk about what she does, why it’s important, and why fashionista chickens and horses that can go swamp diving without hysteria might be a good thing. And other interesting things, of course, but they’re not as fun to say as “swamp diving ponies.”
