You can download the episode directly here.

In this episode, Jonathon Shafi and Craig Dalzell discuss another chapter in Common Weal's Common Home Plan, this time dealing with how we heat our homes.

You can read the Common Home Plan here.

The pair first discuss the progress towards COP26 with the news in the FT today that the UK Government is in talks to move the conference to London citing cost over-runs and organisational mismanagement (but decidedly not mentioning the antipathy that Boris Johnson has towards Nicola Sturgeon and any hint that she and/or the independence movement may benefit from the press coverage of the conference).

After this they discuss the practical steps that could be taken to decarbonise Scotland's heating sector noting both that 50% of Scotland's energy use is for heat and that almost all of it is derived from fossil fuels. After outlining some recent proposals that may decarbonise Scotland but may also increase prices and reduce quality of living.

Instead, Scotland could build a network of District Heating Systems. This is a massive infrastructure project and cannot be done by leaving it to the private markets but once installed would have far better outcomes than any other scheme.
