This week, Head of Policy & Research Dr Craig Dalzell is joined by long term advocate of Common Weal, Amanda Burgauer to discuss how the Green New Deal will affect rural Scotland.
They discuss issues around retrofitting and replacing housing stock - a particular challenge for older housing that doesn't conform to modern building practices - as well as the challenge of providing decarbonised heating to very rural areas.
Providing services is also a major challenge and one of the opportunities of a Green New Deal would be the creation of skilled jobs in rural areas to help with things like servicing boilers and renewable energy generators.
Finally they discuss retention of population in rural areas and the prospects for increasing immigration to these areas and how the UK's instant dismissal of the Scottish Government's immigration proposals was predicated on a "solution" that will not be delivered by Westminster either.
