00:01:35.760 This is a dominant theme in our culture, which is why self-help books are bestsellers, which is why people see therapists, listen to podcasts, or there's an entire career field of life coaches, because we all recognize we lack wisdom and knowledge, and we need to grow in wisdom and knowledge. 00:01:36.000 --> 00:01:49.840 Maybe the longer you've been a Christian and you read your Bible and you read books like the book of Proverbs, you sometimes realize I have a lot in common with this uh fool the Bible keeps referring to, which is a sign you lack knowledge. 00:01:50.079 --> 00:01:50.959 We need to grow. 00:01:51.040 --> 00:01:55.680 So the question has never been, you know, do we as people do we want to be wise? 00:01:55.840 --> 00:01:58.480 We all want to be known as wise to other people. 00:01:58.879 --> 00:02:05.599 The question is, where does true God-honoring wisdom come from and where does it take us? 00:02:05.840 --> 00:02:10.319 What should that wisdom do in our hearts and in our minds and in our lives? 00:02:10.719 --> 00:02:21.120 An example of this is in the Old Testament when King David realized it was time to hand the reins over to his son Solomon, who would be the new king of Israel. 00:02:21.280 --> 00:02:29.520 And in 1 Chronicles chapter 22, David says this of his son Solomon and preparing him to become king. 00:02:29.759 --> 00:02:44.800 1 Chronicles 22, verse 12, David says, Above all, may the Lord give you insight and understanding when he puts you in charge of Israel, so that you may keep the law of the Lord your God. 00:02:45.759 --> 00:02:47.919 So for King David, he thought, you know what? 00:02:48.000 --> 00:02:53.919 What would serve my son best so that he can be a faithful, righteous king over Israel? 00:02:54.240 --> 00:03:05.199 And to David, he knew he needed God to grant Solomon insight and understanding so that he may obey the Lord his God. 00:03:05.759 --> 00:03:09.919 Wisdom in the Bible, friends, is never an end in of itself. 00:03:10.159 --> 00:03:12.080 We don't get wisdom for wisdom's sake. 00:03:12.240 --> 00:03:23.120 We don't pursue wisdom so that we can brag about we're smarter than other Christians in our lives, or just so that we feel better about ourselves because we have a lot of knowledge stored in our minds. 00:03:23.280 --> 00:03:27.599 It always translates into godly brings me to Colossians this morning. 00:03:38.560 --> 00:03:43.840 Paul opens Colossians with essentially the same prayer David prayed for Solomon. 00:03:44.000 --> 00:03:56.639 He's praying for these Christians in Colossi: that they will grow in wisdom and understanding so that they can know who they are, know the God who saved them through the person and work of Christ, and live in light of that information. 00:03:57.120 --> 00:04:00.719 So the big idea I want us to pay attention to this morning is this. 00:04:00.960 --> 00:04:08.080 Friends, what you know about God, his word, and his gospel should shape how you live. 00:04:08.560 --> 00:04:14.560 What you know about God, his word, and his gospel should shape how you live. 00:04:14.960 --> 00:04:26.240 So let's look at what Paul prays on behalf of the church and Colossi, because what he asked for tells you everything about God, what God wants for your life as his disciples. 00:04:26.480 --> 00:04:36.560 We're going to be focusing on verses nine through 14, where Paul, maybe some of your Bible headings, say uh his prayer for spiritual growth. 00:04:36.800 --> 00:04:40.639 Let's look down briefly at verses nine through 10. 00:04:40.959 --> 00:04:50.800 Paul says, For this reason also, since the day we heard this, heard of their faith, their faithfulness in following Christ, we haven't stopped praying for you. 00:04:51.040 --> 00:05:10.160 We are asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of his will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding, so that you may walk worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him, bearing fruit in every good work, and growing in the knowledge of God. 00:05:10.959 --> 00:05:17.199 Friends, your theology was never meant to primarily just stay in your head. 00:05:18.160 --> 00:05:22.399 Sound doctrine is not meant to just stay in your head. 00:05:22.800 --> 00:05:30.319 Let's just walk through line by line what exactly Paul is praying for on behalf of these Colossian Christians. 00:05:30.560 --> 00:05:37.680 He starts out by praying on their behalf that they may be filled with the knowledge of God's will. 00:05:38.160 --> 00:05:41.439 This isn't a prayer for mere head facts. 00:05:41.839 --> 00:05:53.920 It is a prayer that the gospel, God's redemptive plan for the nations that save these Christians in Colossae, would saturate them and penetrate their hearts and lead to godly living. 00:05:54.079 --> 00:05:55.040 Now, here's the problem. 00:05:55.120 --> 00:06:06.079 Now, I've already alluded to this a few times, but the problem is someone, or a group of people rather, had been tempting the Christians in Colossi with some form of heresy. 00:06:06.240 --> 00:06:12.800 The author, Paul, does not give us the specifics of the false teaching, but there's hints sprinkled throughout this leather. 00:06:12.959 --> 00:06:30.399 So what is clear is that whatever they were teaching, it was like some kind of esoteric mysticism of believe in Jesus, but also believe in like worshiping angels and keeping the law and all these other secret avenues by which you could have a more impressive intimacy with Christ. 00:06:30.639 --> 00:06:42.639 Because if you pay attention when you read Colossians, you actually notice Paul uses this word fullness often, which makes many think maybe that's he's using that word fullness because that's what the false teachers were saying. 00:06:42.800 --> 00:06:50.800 You can have fullness in Christ by believing in Jesus and the gospel, but also by pursuing these other avenues to have a deeper relationship with God. 00:06:50.959 --> 00:06:54.399 And Paul is saying, no, no, no, fullness is found in Christ. 00:06:54.639 --> 00:06:56.800 Fullness is found in the gospel. 00:06:56.959 --> 00:06:58.240 I believe there is something there. 00:06:58.319 --> 00:07:09.920 I believe Paul is strategically using that word, but my point is the problem is that the Colossian Christians were being tempted by these false teachers to add to Jesus in the gospel. 00:07:10.240 --> 00:07:14.800 And Paul is saying, friends, you have all that you need in Christ. 00:07:15.199 --> 00:07:17.600 So I believe he's trying to help them. 00:07:17.759 --> 00:07:26.319 Hey, this heresy that's infiltrating the church is promising some kind of secret, elite, spirit, uh, elite spiritual insight. 00:07:26.560 --> 00:07:34.399 And Paul's response isn't to, well, let me compete with that by offering some new knowledge or some new version of Christianity. 00:07:34.720 --> 00:07:40.720 He prays that they would properly use what they already have in Christ Jesus. 00:07:40.959 --> 00:07:46.079 So Paul isn't praying on their behalf when he says that they should be filled with the knowledge of his will. 00:07:46.160 --> 00:07:50.079 He's not praying that they be filled with some new knowledge that they don't already possess. 00:07:50.560 --> 00:08:04.000 He's praying that the gospel they already have believed in and that has saved them would grip their hearts and remind them of the overflow of God's love they already have received past tense. 00:08:04.240 --> 00:08:06.079 So let me just modernize this a little bit. 00:08:06.160 --> 00:08:10.879 It's almost like when we as Christians, we have everything we need because we're united to Christ. 00:08:10.959 --> 00:08:16.160 We have the gospel, we have God's Spirit indwelling in us, but we feel like, but there's something missing in my faith. 00:08:16.240 --> 00:08:25.120 I need to go to like some Christian conference and get this like this high, or I need to go do this, or I have to have some experience because then I'll feel fulfilled. 00:08:25.279 --> 00:08:33.840 And it's like, well, then you're saying what Jesus did on the cross is not enough, because you're trying to add to what God has already supplied. 00:08:34.080 --> 00:08:37.600 So he prays that they would be filled with the knowledge of his will. 00:08:37.759 --> 00:08:41.120 It reminds me of his prayer on behalf of the Ephesian Christians. 00:08:41.279 --> 00:08:42.159 It's very similar. 00:08:42.320 --> 00:08:52.159 He it's almost like he's praying, God, would you just open the eyes of their hearts so that they grow in an experiential knowledge of what they already possess? 00:08:52.399 --> 00:08:56.320 That is what Paul is seeking the Lord on their behalf for. 00:08:56.559 --> 00:09:02.320 But he prays that they would grow in all spiritual wisdom and understanding. 00:09:02.879 --> 00:09:13.600 These two words appear together in the Old Testament in 1 Chronicles, as I just read, and when David prays for his son Solomon, wisdom typically is knowing how to live. 00:09:13.840 --> 00:09:21.120 So in biblical times, especially in a Hebrew context, wisdom and knowledge was not equated with facts in your head. 00:09:21.200 --> 00:09:26.960 It was skillful living, living in light of what you knew factually in your head. 00:09:27.200 --> 00:09:42.799 So he, Paul is praying that these Colossian Christians will grow in their wisdom, but also in their understanding, which is another way of saying their discernment and how to lead a life in which they apply in their daily life what they already know through God's word. 00:09:43.279 --> 00:09:47.039 So he wants them to grow in all spiritual wisdom and understanding. 00:09:47.200 --> 00:09:56.000 So Paul isn't asking God to give these Colossian Christians or us today something they don't already have. 00:09:56.320 --> 00:10:01.840 He's asking God to help them properly use what is already theirs in Christ's. 00:10:02.000 --> 00:10:12.000 Now I know I'm repeating myself, but isn't this the Christian life, friends, where we're constantly having to remind ourselves of stuff we already know and believe because we're prone to wonder from the God we love? 00:10:12.240 --> 00:10:17.679 Because we know we're justified by faith, but sometimes we still feel like I have to earn God's favor through my good deeds. 00:10:17.919 --> 00:10:23.200 Because we know that Jesus spilled his blood to purchase us, but we still wonder, does God love us? 00:10:23.440 --> 00:10:30.399 We have to constantly, repetitiously remind us of what we already possess in Christ. 00:10:31.039 --> 00:10:35.120 And when you look at verse 10, Paul makes a connection here. 00:10:35.279 --> 00:10:42.639 He says, so that, whenever you see that phrase, that's an indicator to you that this is connecting something. 00:10:42.960 --> 00:10:58.799 He wants them to grow in wisdom and understanding and knowledge of his will and all spiritual, uh and all spiritual understanding, so that you may walk worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him, bearing fruit in every good work. 00:10:59.840 --> 00:11:04.720 God honoring knowledge that comes from Scripture has a destination. 00:11:04.960 --> 00:11:11.360 The purpose of being filled with wisdom is so that you walk worthy of the Lord and you bear fruit. 00:11:11.600 --> 00:11:16.399 The purpose of being filled with wisdom is walking worthy of the Lord. 00:11:16.559 --> 00:11:25.519 Theology, Bible intake is never meant to be purely an academic endeavor, ever for the Christian. 00:11:25.759 --> 00:11:27.919 It is an ethical endeavor. 00:11:28.159 --> 00:11:30.720 The knowledge shapes the living. 00:11:30.960 --> 00:11:38.000 What you know about God has to reach what you do on Monday morning, not just what you study and store in your mind. 00:11:38.159 --> 00:11:43.440 This language of walking in a manner worthy, we're familiar with that language if you if you've been a Christian for a while. 00:11:43.600 --> 00:11:48.720 Whenever the Bible talks about walking, it's referring to a lifestyle, a pattern of life. 00:11:48.879 --> 00:12:00.879 It's your habitual pattern, though everyone in this room is a flaw center struggling forward, but the normative pattern is striving to walk in a manner worthy of the gospel. 00:12:01.360 --> 00:12:08.159 Not a one-time decision that you made many moons ago, but an ongoing lifestyle. 00:12:08.320 --> 00:12:13.120 Now, let me be careful because I know many of us come from different church backgrounds, religious backgrounds. 00:12:13.360 --> 00:12:37.200 When Paul uses this language of walking in a manner worthy, that worthy does not refer to owning or rather earning God's love by showing or proving your worth, as if there's this exchange of look at all the deeds I'm doing, God, look at the boxes I've checked, look at all the sins I've abstained from, the temptation I fight, my church attendance, how often I read my Bible, am I worthy? 00:12:37.440 --> 00:12:38.879 And then Jesus says, you know what? 00:12:38.960 --> 00:12:40.159 Yes, good resume. 00:12:40.399 --> 00:12:41.679 You are worthy of my love. 00:12:41.759 --> 00:12:43.039 No, no, no, no, no. 00:12:43.440 --> 00:12:48.480 Walking in a manner worthy means you already have God's love set on you. 00:12:48.639 --> 00:12:52.639 You already have been judicially declared justified in the courtroom of heaven. 00:12:52.799 --> 00:12:57.039 God has chosen to forever think of you as forgiven and as a child. 00:12:57.279 --> 00:13:01.440 Therefore, live your life in light of who you are. 00:13:01.840 --> 00:13:07.919 If you truly are a justified adopted child of God, then live as if you are that. 00:13:08.240 --> 00:13:13.039 It reminds me of growing up when, unfortunately, I was a problem in the public school system. 00:13:13.200 --> 00:13:14.240 I was the class clown. 00:13:14.320 --> 00:13:16.399 I got in trouble as early as I can remember. 00:13:16.480 --> 00:13:18.480 We can go all the way back to preschool. 00:13:18.879 --> 00:13:23.200 And often I would be disciplined and get in trouble, both in school and at home. 00:13:23.440 --> 00:13:29.279 And my mom sometimes would remind me when you step out of this house and you go to school, you represent me. 00:13:29.679 --> 00:13:31.519 That's kind of like our sanctification. 00:13:31.600 --> 00:13:33.679 Like live what you already are. 00:13:33.840 --> 00:13:35.679 Live out who you are in Christ. 00:13:35.840 --> 00:13:40.720 Represent your heavenly Father in a manner worthy of his name. 00:13:40.960 --> 00:13:49.440 And all of us who are in Christ should be bearing fruit in every good work, as Paul goes on to pray on their behalf. 00:13:49.759 --> 00:13:52.879 This is the output of the Christian life. 00:13:53.200 --> 00:13:59.360 Wisdom that does not bear fruit in the life of a Christian is no wisdom at all. 00:13:59.840 --> 00:14:00.960 Just receive that. 00:14:01.200 --> 00:14:16.159 If you claim to know God's word and you have the knowledge of what God calls you to in daily living, of what it means to walk in a manner worthy of the gospel, and yet that's not exemplified in your life, then you are lacking in wisdom. 00:14:16.399 --> 00:14:26.799 There is a disconnect because the wisdom should lead to a worthy walk that also bears fruit, which gives, remember, we went through the book of James, right? 00:14:27.039 --> 00:14:33.039 Those who have faith, that faith is evidenced through our deeds, through our lives. 00:14:33.600 --> 00:14:40.960 But Paul also prays that they are increasing in the knowledge of God. 00:14:42.240 --> 00:14:43.039 Increasing. 00:14:43.120 --> 00:14:46.480 That is an ongoing pattern, Paul is praying. 00:14:46.720 --> 00:14:58.559 Paul is praying that these Colossian Christians, as they walk in a manner worthy of the gospel, bearing fruit in every good work, will have an ongoing, increasing knowledge of God. 00:14:59.120 --> 00:15:03.759 Notice it's like Paul gives us uh the sanctification loop process. 00:15:04.000 --> 00:15:21.279 Here's how it goes True God-honoring knowledge leads to godly living, which then leads to a deeper knowledge of God, which leads to obedience that deepens your intimacy with God, and walking with God teaches you more about God. 00:15:21.759 --> 00:15:33.200 It's like God created this like built-in cheat code to make sure that you're always growing in holiness and growing in your intimacy and love for the Father by following and obeying the Father. 00:15:33.519 --> 00:15:44.559 Knowledge leads to godly living, living, which leads to a deeper knowledge of God, scripture, you can wax eloquent topics of theology. 00:16:13.440 --> 00:16:23.600 I have known people like this who can defend the faith, who can quote the Puritans and all these things, and yet are spiritually stagnant in their Christian walk. 00:16:24.159 --> 00:16:38.000 The goal of every church gathering, the goal of every sermon, the goal of why we do everything as a local church isn't to, for me to stand up here and look at all of you as brains on the stick and I just need to transfer information into your heads. 00:16:38.320 --> 00:16:41.360 No, the goal is transformation. 00:16:42.320 --> 00:16:44.799 The goal is transformation. 00:16:45.120 --> 00:16:51.360 We are trying to reach the head, the heart, and the hands through the transforming power of God's word. no one is around you and the decisions you make in those moments, and how you confess sin, how you pursue reconciliation, how you steward your finances, how you love other people, how you share the maybe we are succumbing to sin and temptation or where we're weak and immature and need to grow. 00:19:39.599 --> 00:19:46.079 That is a gift of his grace to say, son, daughter, I want you to enjoy from what I believe in my head to sink into my heart and shape how I live. 00:19:57.839 --> 00:20:03.839 But Paul doesn't stop at calling you and I to walk worthy of the Lord and his gospel. 00:20:04.000 --> 00:20:10.079 He immediately prays on behalf of the Colossians for the power to do the very things he's praying for. 00:20:10.319 --> 00:20:14.880 And what he asked for might surprise you if you look down at verse 11. 00:20:15.680 --> 00:20:34.480 Verse 11, he goes on, being strengthened with all power, according to his glorious might, so that you may have great endurance and patience, joyfully giving thanks to the Father who has enabled you to share in the saints' inheritance in the light. 00:20:34.640 --> 00:20:37.759 You see that so that phrase again, don't you, in don't get me wrong, if you can remove suffering and pain from your life, please, by all means, do that. 00:27:59.920 --> 00:28:07.920 But we also recognize but whether the pain and the suffering leaves or not, that doesn't quantify whether or not I can have joy in the Lord or whether my God loves me. 00:28:08.000 --> 00:28:13.680 And if I serve him, it just shapes the circumstances by which I serve my God and King. 00:28:14.079 --> 00:28:23.920 So, friends, as a disciple of Christ, what Paul is trying to emphasize to these saints is that endurance, God honoring endurance and patience, is
