Dane, Steve and Marcus sit down to play some D&D using the system Old-School Essentials which is essentially a modern version of the first edition of D&D, the Beginner/Expert (B/X) style. Marcus has never played an RPG before, so in this episode we not only teach Marcus about the concept of RPG's, but roll him and Dane up characters (Steve is the DM) and figure out our equipment and whatnot. We're preparing to go into the wild world of fantasy...and we will also figure out a slightly better microphone situation in the future somehow...
Okay, so here we are. We're all set up. We're recording. Alright, cool. And um, alright. So, Marcus, have you ever played an RPG before?
SPEAKER_01I think for like maybe an hour when I was 11 years old. My parents, one of their friends brought their son over. We played a little bit, but that's it, just one time. That was a while back.
SPEAKER_00A long time ago, yeah. 40 years ago. Well, I'll let me just do a tiny bit of hosting here. This is perhaps the first episode of Something That Might Happen a Bunch More. Uh, the podcast version of the show Dungeon Days. Starring me, Dane Hurt, and well, Marcus here has been on every episode so far. So he's also starring Marcus. And uh, and then now here also we have Steven, aka Steve. Sure. And so I thought to myself it would be good to have a long form um podcast version of the show that we don't have to that I don't have to spend as much time editing, hopefully. Um and so that that could come out more often and people would have something to listen to and be entertained by without all the work of all the costumes and everything. We just kind of sit down and grind one of these out for an hour or two a week, and people can have something to tune into. But since you've never played an RPG, we gotta explain some stuff. And I think Steve wants to explain the basics of RPGs.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. And so, you know, of course I've got a page here that's like the basic terminology. Um I'll go over some of this pretty quick. You'll get the gist of it. I mean, this game uses the term referee or game master. Universally everyone says dungeon master, unless like you're playing like Buck Rogers or something like that. They'll generally say DM or sometimes they'll say GM if they're being technically correct. Which is the best kind of correct. Um, of course the word players, I don't think that needs to be explained to you. Player character is the guy on the piece of paper that you're pretending to be, generally. Uh the party is your you and everyone that's playing. I wouldn't be in the party, I'm gonna be the DM. Yeah, I can be, but usually I'm gonna be in the party in the form of all the non-player characters and maybe like an insert character to break you out of jail or something here and there. But generally speaking, it's gonna be you guys doing all the the characters.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I mean, do you understand the concept of like of the game as in general?
SPEAKER_01Of the game? I mean Yeah, like of an RPG. Like it's like a video game where you're fighting against other people that but in a video like on in a video game, those other people could be anybody in their homes. Yeah, yeah. But here we know who we are, huh?
SPEAKER_02Yeah, it's all me. But yeah, but it's yeah, it's also it's played with uh we're gonna be talking, you know, and we're gonna be imagining the action usually. We we love miniatures sometimes. How much minis do you want to do? For the podcast and the show, I don't I don't really think we need to really do that much. I don't think we really do either. I love miniatures and I have a bunch. Dude, I I love miniatures, but playing with miniatures and loving miniatures are two different things, is one of the things I've learned because uh I play a lot of miniatures-based games. I enjoy painting them and building them a lot more than I enjoy playing with random people. It's just random people are random, you know. But anyway, it also I think it's as far as like the note-keeping and stuff like that, it's not gonna be as important for a small game. Because we're not gonna I'm not gonna generally be running uh things that are super map based, you know what I mean. We'll still go to dungeons, but we're not gonna be I'm not gonna be like, oh man, did you map that turn at the left corner? You know, who cares? You know, we well we want to get to the adventure and we don't want to drown you in the boring details. So a campaign is like the series of adventures, right? So if you keep playing the same character with your other characters, then that's the campaign. Alright, that's not a big one. Non-player characters would be characters that I run. So like when when like the chaos rat is asking you for like, you know, the toe of the frog god, that'll be me. You know, it's the NPC. You've probably heard that term used outside of uh DD nowadays, but it should pretty much stay in the role-playing games. Because anybody who thinks that they're the only character in the world, you know, kind of an asshole. Okay, so monsters, right? Um monsters are also like the NPCs. I'll be running those. You know what I mean? Your old counter them. Usually they'll call anything you have to fight a monster. So if it was a good guy that just happens to be uh uh uh fighting you, he'll still be considered a monster for the most part, uh, as far as like how everything groups together. Um the dice, okay? So there's a bunch of different dice. Uh we could do the this is the fun part. We're gonna say the names of the dice, generally speaking, and you'll get used to them. At first it's kind of hard and tricky, but you'll get used to it. Of course, d6, right? We should start with the d6.
SPEAKER_00You know. Hold on. Hold on. I think we should skip to creating characters.
SPEAKER_02You want to skip to the creating? Does he not know d4s?
SPEAKER_01I think I think we're just gonna get six sides, sorry, freedom's dice.
SPEAKER_00We're just gonna have to let him kind of learn by doing sometimes. Okay, because we want to keep this thing. No problem, I think.
SPEAKER_02Sure. Well, anyway, there we're gonna usually refer to it as a D whatever. And uh sides it's on as well. Yeah, and you'll get the you'll get the you'll get the hang of it. We'll hand you the dice, you know, the first couple times, you know what I mean. So I'm just gonna get some out just to have them out. But um So what you'll want to do is you'll want to roll up your characters, okay? If you want to just get into that part, we'll make our character sheets. So what you'll do, um usually I would write here on that side of the margin the attributes, okay? So you're gonna have uh a series of qualities, I guess you would call them or whatever. And uh they are going to be pretty much the same ones in every version of DD ever. We won't get too far into what they're why they are, but I just want to have something to tropes, huh? Yeah, they're they're they're very tropey. Um especially like the difference between like wisdom and intelligence. I mean, like, you can tell me what that is. Um, but nonetheless, they have them as separate attributes, and so we'll get three six-sided dice. Uh, you can use mine there. And uh we will use those to uh generate those qualities for you. Now, um, since we're rolling up characters, there's a chance. I'm just gonna say now, like if you were gonna play a fighter and then you can roll up a character that didn't have fighter attributes. If that happens, we'll figure something out. Okay. We we we we there's all there's lots of ways to handle dice. This this game kind of gives you the 3d6 roll. We used to have one, you roll four dice, you take the hive. Eh. We'll just try the three. We'll we'll do it old school for the first time.
SPEAKER_00I like that. I like the old school, the three, three D6.
SPEAKER_02And if your just character just totally is awful, we'll we'll just kind of say he died and on the way to the the bank and roll another one or whatever. Uh uh uh so um on the way to the bank. He was just, you know, it just didn't make it. Well, I used to say the characters just died in st in in in uh at birth if their attributes were too low. Um so okay, so we have the attributes, and so what they do is they have abbreviations. So here's a pencil. Um you got one? Good. Okay, so the first one is gonna be S T R, and that sounds for a strength or strength, if you're really like into that. I I just say strength. Um and then the next one is intelligence, I-N-T. And then um the next one's wisdom, W-I-S. Now here's a word that every dungeon player knows that almost no one uses. Dexterity. Alright, so yes, if you need help with that, but maybe not. D-E-X is the abbreviation. And then uh there's two more. Constitution. And then uh the C-O-N is the official, I don't know who made that official, but that's the official abbreviation for Constitution. And then charisma, as they say. Uh the Riz. And that would be C H A.
SPEAKER_00Probably should have told you this, Marcus. Um, yeah, this is kind of the what you need to be writing down because see this sheet before you is one of your tools in this game, you see.
SPEAKER_02It's okay to write it down the first time.
SPEAKER_00Character sheet. Sure, sure, you can kind of keep it like that. But next to this, you're gonna be writing the numbers that apply to your character.
SPEAKER_02Okay, so now we can generate those numbers. So, uh you know, this is the this is the roll 3d6. Okay, so that's these three guys. And what we're gonna do is we're gonna roll them and we're gonna add them all up together and get a big number. So just roll those three. Good first roll with a 12. So that's a good 12 strength. 12 strength? Yeah, I'll get you right.
SPEAKER_00That's that's a good, you know, anything over nine is generally considered to be good. Alright, now this is Marcus rolling. He just rolled his first attribute. He got 12 strengths.
SPEAKER_02And a 14 intelligence.
SPEAKER_0014 intelligence, that's very good. He is a wizard. Yeah, so he'll be able to play. Extremely good. A nine wisdom. Fair enough. Okay. Good thing he's not a cleric. Dexterity, he's got a 10. Okay, okay.
SPEAKER_02Okay, he's gonna be able to qualify for a wizard, so that's already good. Constitution 13.
SPEAKER_00Not bad. Not too shabby at all.
SPEAKER_02We used to call this one the Duckstat Charisma 13. Look at that. Uh, what does constitution mean now?
SPEAKER_01Constitution is like your help. Yeah, that's actually that's what I thought right after I asked the question. No problem.
SPEAKER_02You you you'll get used to it. You you play one game, you'll start to see that they're all very similar. So now it's time for Dane. So hopefully you're gonna roll. You're a fighter, right? You're going for a fighter. Yeah. I hope you make it into fighter college with the role.
SPEAKER_00So too. Here goes nothing, man. Alright.
SPEAKER_02Oh no, no, no, no. Okay, so this character, we just like, you know. No. Um, we're not even gonna talk about what just happened here. We're just gonna act like it didn't happen. Go ahead and go again. So that's part of the game changer. What happened? What happens with five? You wouldn't have been able to be a fighter. Eleven. So you're not the strongest fighter in the world, but you know. Does that even qualify me, though? Eleven? I'm pretty sure. Let's see. And what this one's um qualify me. Not the strongest fighter in the world. Not the strongest fighter, you're not you know, um Well, okay. The only re it just says the prime requisite is strength, so it doesn't say that you have a minimum in this game.
unknownOkay.
SPEAKER_02But um if you would like, because this this this happens. People will be like, I want to play this character, and then you roll, like Dang just rolled, and then the game decides you're not playing that character. Now, if we were uh strict, and we are not, we would just make him play this guy until he died in a trap. However, what we'll do is just roll again. Let's just roll again, bro. Come on, man. Why are you gonna roll? You cannot roll lower this time, man. Damn it. Okay, okay, so okay, my dice hate you. Okay. So what we're gonna do is we're gonna take my dice away from Dane, keep him from rolling any more porter. That's another thing. Superstitions around dice are very important. And you always want to create an excuse for someone to roll again when just things are just too bad. Yeah, let me let me use my dice. Yes, yes, he needed to tap into his own mana.
SPEAKER_00Alright, well, alright, here goes nothing. I'm rolling 3d6 like the good old days, and it's all right.
SPEAKER_02And you're reminding why the good old days got moved on.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Alright, come on now. There's the guy! Okay, now we're talking. Now we're talking.
SPEAKER_02There's our guy. He's got a 15. Whew! Okay, cool deal. Interesting. Alright, so yeah. You know what to do. Just about anything else will be acceptable. I know. That's that's what I needed. Yeah, that 12 intelligence you didn't need, but hey. Who knows? Maybe you know your thinking man's harder. Thinking wisdom you didn't need. That's how it is. How it is. Not low.
SPEAKER_01Eleven. Get you in the door. You would do well at crabs in the League 11. So we only get two dice. If you only get two dice of crabs. Okay.
SPEAKER_02Another 11, really? So we're all set here. Okay, so we have our stats. And so the next part of the thing, they would say, hey, there's a this game, but the one we're playing right now is a little different, but there's an experience thing that this game does. But we'll worry about that later. Usually it's like they say he's got a 15 strength and you got a 14 IQ, you get a 5% bonus. Like, okay, I want to worry about that every day. But but we're gonna try to give you your little bonuses. Okay, so the next thing is we're gonna go to our class stuff. There's seven classes in this game. This is according to the old DD system. So um you've already pretty much picked your classes, so I'm gonna skip the overview and just get to your uh because I think we're just gonna be the characters we are in the show, right?
SPEAKER_00I mean, is that cool with you? Yeah. Do I gotta make a voice or just be the wizard? Well, you know, uh you people I don't think first of all, I don't feel like it's much of a voice to have to do.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00But people do like to do voices. I the way I play is that I just am myself. I mean, that's just how my character is on the show, anyway. If if you want to do the voice, that's cool. I don't want to. I was like I was asked if it was required.
SPEAKER_02Right? Right? Yeah, see like if you're doing like a battle report or something, you'd do the voice. But for the podcast, it would I would imagine you would get exhausted. If you don't want to, you don't have to. Okay, so you have something next. Uh, this is a new thing to write down. You have hit points. Should I be under here? Right. Yeah, yeah. It's gonna be in pretty much anywhere, and you wanna So whenever you take damage that's gonna come out of your hit points. Generally, you want to be not at zero or lower, um depending on uh how this particular game takes it. Sometimes you die at zero, sometimes you're just knocked out. I'm I'm generally on the knocked out side, uh, just because like killing characters can really uh hurt people's feelings. And sometimes it can just stop the adventure, like if everyone's at a certain level. So nonetheless, keep an eye on your hit points. As a wizard, you have the least hit points of anyone in the group. So you're kind of like gonna need to be real careful all the time. You have a d4 of hit points. Don't roll one. So roll that real quick. He only has one d4. That's a wizard. That's every wizard ever, man. So he got a two, which is decent. So right here? Yeah, yeah, you got the two. So, alright. Now uh the bottom number is the right one, I guess. Yes, yes, on this one. Sometimes uh different D4s look differently, so like sometimes it'll be at the top, but you could usually fig you know figure it out pretty quick.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, we might have to grind up a level or two before we go into the dungeon.
SPEAKER_02I I have a thing, uh, yeah, I have a process called like uh level three or die kind of process where I calculate exactly how much experience you need to go up a level. You fight that monster, you go to the inn, then you fight the next monster, and you go to the inn. And that way you you also build experience because if you just jump up and you've never played before, you wouldn't, you know what I mean? It's uh you so you wanna you still want to play through it, even if we do an abbreviated like uh Rocky push-ups kind of version of the of the thing. Like I said, we'll get you there, we'll get you there. Um so so the the thing is you're gonna have a whole bunch of other stuff. Oh god, they've got the weird save and throws. Um so um you have an attribute called Thacko.
SPEAKER_00Uh No, we can we don't have to do Thaco, bro. You don't have to do Thacko? No, I mean that system is designed to where you can use it with it. Opt out and just go go ascending uh AC.
SPEAKER_02Well, right, so Thaco, I don't know why they wouldn't incorporate it. Thacko is an old thing that means two-hit armor class zero. And in the old version of Dungeons and Dragons, you had to do algebra every time you attack everything because they they're nerds and they guess they thought it was fun.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_02No one on Earth enjoyed it except for just people who learned it that way. And so they have ascending armor class, which is what we were talking about, which makes things like, okay, the guys go to 20, I've got a plus two, so I roll on a roll 18 or something like that to get to that 20, right? The D20s used to handle most of that kind of attack stuff. But what you're gonna be interested in is these wonderful saving throws. Now, these are the old school ones. Uh they got rid of these in 2000 in most versions of DD, but I don't mind. Um, so we're gonna have to write this down somewhere. So you're gonna create a section that says saving throws. Yeah, the saving throws, yeah. Yeah, they gave us five because you know everyone loves that. I like the three, but you know. The three are like for what you use to dodge it. But in this case, is this all I need for hit points? Do I'm not gonna add that? Yeah, you're you're gonna add more as you go up level. You already get the. But that's your maximum hit points, correct?
SPEAKER_01But those can go this way, huh?
SPEAKER_02Yeah, yeah. You don't want to change the attribute of hit points. You're just gonna like add and subtract from it as like you get healed and wounded. And with two hit points to keep track of, it's not gonna be like uh just basically anything happening to you could be catastrophic. So you're just gonna have to be very careful and hide behind Dane most of the time. And even Dane, he could get hit by a mean orc and it could ruin his whole day at level one. I mean, just one bad moment. So it's it's really hard to you but I'm gonna be good. It's okay. I've I've I've guided many a dungeon here to level 20, so it's okay. You'll make it. And I will just say, we'll just put two next to your name and keep going. We're like, okay, that was an alternate universe version of that guy.
SPEAKER_00We're gonna write it in there. So it's like your long-last brother who looks just like you comes along and picks up your bag of stuff. We've we've done that before, too. There's that option I don't know. That's a good thing to think about. Uh because we could die.
SPEAKER_02DD is a little bit meaner than other games. Like a lot of games are a little bit you have like more hit points with level one, and you have a little bit more control over your build. You know what I mean? As far as like you could but like in this game, it's kind of like this is pretty old school. You know, this is what they started with. And uh just death can happen. If it does, I mean, you know, you could use it as a way to write something new into the story. Yeah. You might find that you like another class better than wizard, you know what I mean? Even though wizard is kind of necessary for the you know, wizard and fighter, you know, that's like those are the classic two. If you were gonna have two classes, it would be those two.
SPEAKER_00So yeah, I guess we could just play it that way. We start with the two characters we are in the show. If we die, we die. We make new characters and just continue on. Yeah, just change your costume a little bit.
SPEAKER_02Well how long do these games usually last? It can last uh usually somewhere between an hour to twelve hours. Now we're probably not gonna uh no, uh since uh I think well, maybe I mean I'm not in for twelve hours in a row.
SPEAKER_00No, no, I do know I was thinking like two hours max for these episodes, you know, one hour. We want to keep it short so it's consumable. We don't want to bore people four hours. When I don't listen to a podcast, I'm usually tuning in for like a two-hour thing most of the time. Um, you know, DD sessions have been known to go three or four hours, but yeah.
SPEAKER_02And when we were kids, we would like spend the night and play for like eight hours or something. But even then, you don't really spend that whole time playing. You end up like arguing it and doing all sorts of other stuff. But anyway, let's uh we'll try to get your we wrote down save and throws. So they all have an initial, and we'll worry about what the initials stand for later, because we just be bogged down forever talking about that. So it's D. And you can re obviously you can double task this.
SPEAKER_00Hold on. You you should tell us what the initials stand for so that we can just write that down.
SPEAKER_02So at level one, I'm gonna not be having you roll a saving throw versus death very much. That would mean you would need to roll a 13 or better, or die. Right. Okay? That's a bad situation to be in. Um the next one is a W, and it stands for wands. For some reason, wands have a different potency than every other thing, so they got them on the side. Uh the next one is a P. And the P stands for paralysis. And that's a 13 for you. Uh the wand was a 14. Um and then there are two more. What was death again? Death is 13. Okay. And then um there is a B. Wait, one was 14? Yeah, yeah. D is 13. Yeah, I missed it. W is 14. P is 13. Okay. Okay? And then there are two more. B, which is breath attacks. Heaven forbid you be attacked by a dragon at level one. You have to get to like level six before you even fight a baby dragon, you know, like seven, eight, nine. You don't even want to like do this. And then S is spells, so that'll be fifteen. So B 16, S15. Now yours are gonna be different. Right. You know, you already know. Um, alright, and then uh you're goal, we're going to do your spells, but that's gonna take a second. So we're we're gonna jump over to him real quick just so we can do his saving throws. Um so your saving throws, Dane, are uh D th D is twelve. Okay. I wanted to say D13 because that spelled out says die. If you look at D-I-E, you know? I was gonna name a band that, but I just never got around to it. Uh W13. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Oh wait, I'm oh I'm W13, okay. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_02P14, B15, S16. Okay. Okay. Uh the fighters in this game get one D8 hit points for some reason. Okay. We'll make it work. Yes, it's gotta be the Dane dice. No. So you got a two? We're not keeping a two. I've never. Just for the record, nobody keeps a roll like that when you're the only fighter in the game. Okay. So here, let me just switch out the time. It's at least gotta be a five. Okay? If it's not a five, we're not taking it. Okay. Six will take. Six will take.
SPEAKER_00For the record, listeners, I just rolled like a two and a one, I think, or something shit like that.
SPEAKER_01It was bad. And this happens. You know, this is so you re-roll because otherwise he'd be out of the game too fast?
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Because if he had like two hit points and you had two hit points, the first adventure would be like you see a goblin and he fires a slingshot at you, and then you both died. Yeah. From one slot. Yeah. It would just it wouldn't be very fun. Do you know like what my AC is? Uh, you will find that out when you get your armor. So we'll when we get to we'll so we'll get there, we'll try to get there pretty quick.
SPEAKER_00Um, gotcha, gotcha.
SPEAKER_02Um, fortunately, the fighter section is really brief. Um and there are languages. I'm not gonna have you write down your languages, dude. Um, we're not that kind of guys. I'm not gonna be like this dragon only speaks Eastern dragon. Yeah, yeah. We're trying to like we're trying to have a fantasy experience here. Okay, so you know, we want to let our minds run free a little bit. Okay, so for the magic user, we need to figure out your spells. Okay. Um so for a first level magic user. That was the old term. They used to say wizard, they still don't say magic user. They I think they changed it so they wouldn't freak out uh people in the 80s. Uh you may spend time and money on magical research. Worry about that later. Spellbooks continue formula. Yes, I need to know how many spells you got. Is it right here? Yes. You have one level one spell. Wow. Well, that'll be easy. I mean. Okay. So uh you were gonna write down somewhere on your character probably at the bottom what spells you have. I'm gonna tell you what spell you're gonna want. There's two spells that are even contenders here. You could use other spells, but I'm just gonna tell you the one- If only gets one? He if you only get one, I would pick from these three, okay? I would pick either magic missile or I would pick sleep. And actually, I wouldn't even pick shield, you just need to stay all the way out of combat. You know, uh the third one shield.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_02And then there's other you you don't know all those, okay? You just get to pick one. Um and on this, there are other spells, but like charm person, that's kind of like a role-playing thing. Uh I would rather be able to kill somebody. Uh, detect magic. I mean, dude, really, I'd rather shoot the fireball first, detect magic later. Floating disc is to help you carry. Wait, are you still listing some that I could use? You could use any of these, yes. Oh. Now, um, I'm just telling you from experience, you're gonna want magic missile. I'll just save you the trouble. Sleep could also save you. Sleep affects a whole group, but magic missile never misses, right? Alright. So if you cast magic missile, it will hit whatever it is.
SPEAKER_00I mean, it's it's a toss-up between sleep and yeah. I mean, it would be so nice to get like detect magic.
SPEAKER_02Those are all fun and have a use, but I would I guess I would just wait until later, because just detecting magic is all you're gonna do in the middle of winter. How many spells does he get at like level three? He gets another spell when he goes up a level. Okay, well.
SPEAKER_00And then just started at a higher level, but like it's fine.
SPEAKER_02We'll just do some stuff. We'll do some stuff. We'll I'll I'll I'll run you through some like, oh, let's look, learn how to use our characters, and then we'll get there. Um that's really almost everything he has to worry about. Uh says he has a Thacko of 19, which I guess is plus zero to hit.
SPEAKER_00Can we does it say just like what AC would be if it's ascending style?
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I think it's like zero here, and then at some point he just jumps up to plus two, and then they they have a slightly different system. If you want, I'll like read this book over the week or whatever.
SPEAKER_00But doesn't it say on there, like, would it be like thaco zero? Yeah, but but is there like AC? Uh oh oh. You see how that works? Oh look, okay, so so it calls it thaco, but it's still the same thing. What it's saying is 19 is their AC. No, no, no.
SPEAKER_0219 would be what you would roll to hit somebody with an armor class of zero in the original D. However, an armor class of zero in the original DD would be an armor class of twenty in a uh AC up system. Do you know what I'm saying? Yeah, but surely it has regular ACs in here somewhere. No, it does, but that goes your two-hit, not your armor class. Your armor class is gonna come from your armor.
SPEAKER_00Okay, okay, okay, okay. So this shit can be a little confusing sometimes.
SPEAKER_02That's why you need a dungeon master. Unfortunately, yeah. I yeah, it's like I haven't been drinking today or anything, so I'm very clear. I don't drink it all. Um, so yeah, so what's we we got the basic part here uh um for him. Uh so you will be able to use magical scrolls and items and such like that as you find them. So you'll be able to add those, and those are gonna add up quick.
SPEAKER_00So you write that down whenever you find an item or something you put in your inventory and stuff. To me, that's like one of the coolest parts of the game. You know, it really is.
SPEAKER_02I've always thought that was cool. And also just remembering what you have so you don't, you know, you're like, oh wow, wait, at the last minute I could bust this out and you know, save everybody.
SPEAKER_01What is there a specific number for each person if I roll it, I get to find something? Or how does that work?
SPEAKER_02Yeah, you would roll usually, I mean, and you know, this this this one's got its own little spin on it, but pretty much what it would be is like you would do a search. Uh you would search like a room if you were looking for something and something was there. Uh old DD, you would roll a one on a D6 to do it. This one might have a different system for it. But the basic thing is you would roll uh uh depending on how it would go. Uh usually I would pre-plan, so I would have the the treasure for all the monsters pre-rolled so we wouldn't have to roll it randomly and waste our time during the session looking up stuff like that. I could just be like, hey, you got this. You know what I mean? Um so generally it's kind of like that kind of situation. And you can get it other ways. Like you could just kill a guy and he has something on him and search his body or whatever.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, but basically, yeah, if you want to find something, you you're gonna say, like, yeah, I'm looking around. And then they're gonna be like uh roll for uh fucking what do they say? Like roll for uh roll to search. But what what is that that sort of uh thing that's like uh it it it well essentially here we're gonna be adding our like intelligence modifier, right?
SPEAKER_02To like our There are things that add to things uh with and each each of these different In fact we should write down our our bonus numbers. Um ability scores. Uh do you have any ability scores that are uh 13 or 15? Uh I mean strength is fifteen. Okay, then you are plus one in melee, which is probably plus one to hit, I'm guessing. Yeah, attack and damage. Okay. And that also helps you with opening doors. You can also just put plus one next to your strength. You kind of you know what that would mean, you know what I mean? And you have a uh 14 intelligence, so that would mean that you would get extra language, no one cares. Uh you don't get a bonus spell, so I would hope that we would get a bonus spell, you know. It's like give him a bonus spell, yeah, but okay.
SPEAKER_00It's possible that he might have to roll for some certain spells, and that might give him an extra.
SPEAKER_02You could do research to get spells. So, like, if you got some money, it says in here, that you could do a thing called spell research and uh add new spells to your refer your and all this stuff. Um sounds worth doing. But it does it uh there's uh there's a whole section on it I haven't read yet on this particular one. But um for the most part.
SPEAKER_00Uh for the listener, by the way, we're using old school essentials.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, we're reading old school essentials. Uh I played DD in the 80s, but I hadn't read this particular book, but yet I'm very familiar with it for some reason because it's based on every real pain game we've ever played anyway. So um your Thacko also is zero at level one, which is weird. So you're plus one, you're getting this from your strength, okay? So you get plat plus one from that. We need to find out how much money you start off with, because that's going to affect a couple of his other attributes. Oh, yeah, for sure. Um, and then there might be some stuff that you can buy. The wizard usually they're pretty much kind of like what I would call a glass cannon. You're generally gonna be like hiding in the back, saving your spell for the right moment to save everybody's butt, and then doing it, you know what I mean? And uh at level one, that's just gonna be firing your shot and then just trying not to die. And I'll I I won't make it that hard on you guys. But um, oh, they have alignment too. Um some people don't like alignment, I do, because I think alignment is less about they're like, oh well, you know, philosophy than the and don't get too into it. Just pick one of three alignments. It's uh law, neutral, or chaos, right? And so if you don't like the idea of alignment, then you're a neutral guy. I don't know why neutral guys don't understand this. Like but so if you want to be a lawful guy that you follow a code, you know, or you're a chaotic guy that you just hate following rules, it's pretty much the basic version of it, you know. Um that doesn't mean you're good or evil.
SPEAKER_00But wasn't it like back in the day? I feel like they were basically saying it was evil. Like uh chaos is evil.
SPEAKER_02No, no, no, they they actually they were basing it off of uh Michael Moorcock's Elric series, which was also taking some of the concepts from Paul Anderson's works about that. And he intentionally meant, I mean, even though a lot of people still kind of treated it that way, he always intended it to be kind of about less about your actual morality and just the fact that um you're just kind of like aligned a certain way, kind of like if it was like a government, you know. So chaos wasn't necessarily evil, but the chaos guys did summon a lot of demons in all the Elrock Bellric books, so I can't say that they weren't uh doing some stuff that would be frowned upon by the community.
SPEAKER_00Well, I would say my guy is uh lawful. Yeah. What do you think about your guy? I like the idea of chaos better.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, that's cool. Okay, I guess you're chaotic. Then see the thing, it's not like anybody, it's not like religion in real life where you would be like, hey, I'm an Episcopalian and you're a you know, it doesn't you don't have to talk about it. You know, you're car you're gonna you can hang out with your friends and never know their alignment. You know, it's just it's just a it's kind of it's for two things mainly. It affects how certain spells might affect you, because there's monsters who will do damage to lawful creatures or something like that, and that's what I use it for. You know, you can play however you want, but I just like to have it for like, oh, protection versus chaos, protection versus law or something. That could come up, you know what I mean? And in that case, it would be good to have guys of different alignment. Uh for story for purposes, it's gonna be a lot funnier. Because then that would give your character something to argue about when you decided to argue about your joint of you. If you're just trying to look for some uh uh uh something to chew on when you're role-playing. Uh but nonetheless, uh um I don't really care for the languages because it's just too much to keep track of. Either something that speaks your language or it don't, you know, like we'll skip. Um it's just I've never really had fun integrating that to the game. So we're gonna look at how much equipment you get and try to get to that part. Try not to Okay. Try not to blow the eight too much here.
SPEAKER_01Every time we encounter each other, are we fighting?
SPEAKER_00No, no, no. Uh most of the time we're not fighting. Whenever we do start fighting, it goes into like combat mode, and that's when there's like turns and stuff.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, if you're just like hanging out or you're talking to somebody, you really don't usually need to roll that many dice for that. Because that's just kind of kind of go on like how our imp you know, how we improvise through whatever like like you know, you're talking to a shopkeeper and you tell him to stick it, that would affect it more than we don't we don't need to roll dice about that. We can kind of guess how he's gonna feel about that. You know, but um when we get into combat, you're gonna be like, okay, everything is really regimented and and whatnot. And so like your every you know, you have to do your action and if your weapon is out. I'm not as crouchy as other people about what weapon is out either. So there's some people that are like, oh my god, dude, how can you switch from a bow to a sword in one turn? And I'm like, no one cares. I I could you could you could be surprised that people could, okay, because I mean that's true.
SPEAKER_00So I'm just looking for their um Well, I I appreciate your um laissez-faire approach, uh, but I will say that I do like sometimes the crunchiness of the old school DD. I don't want to put our listeners to sleep a lot of the time when you when you get off into tangents about arguing about rules and stuff, that can obviously get pretty boring. But there's something kind of charming as well to me about the limitations of the old school DD.
SPEAKER_02Well, you know, in the old school DD, every weapon did 1d6 damage, including knives and axes. So the best weapon in the world was a knife. You know, it gave there were there were there was problems, there was problems, you know. But yeah, I know I get you. The reason I'm laissez-faire about that is because if it stops the action, you know what I mean? Like if you're sure because you I'm sure you remember Ross will, oh, you're holding a torch with that hands on, you know, like who cares? Okay, okay.
SPEAKER_00But a mention has been made of a guy that we used to play DD with who we love. I forgot that we will probably bleep that out.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, bleep that out, bleep that out.
SPEAKER_00Alright. I apologize there. Oh goodness. Um but yeah, uh marking down the timestamp there.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, yeah. Just that, you know, we've played with folks that are a lot more uh strict than we are, you know.
SPEAKER_00Sure. And it and I've always thought that that's pretty fun. It it can go a bit wrong at times though, but um yeah, I think we can find the middle.
SPEAKER_02We can find the middle middle way.
SPEAKER_00I think we will, yeah.
SPEAKER_02I might be saying that I'm like very law's fair, but it's not gonna be that crazy. So finally I found what I was looking for, which is what this game says, is your starting gold pieces. Okay. So it's gonna be uh 3d6 times 10. Okay. So you can roll those and he can roll his because he has no luck with my dice. He has only some good luck with your dice. Oh, thank god. That's good. Okay, I got 150. And you've got uh uh a hundred and fifty.
SPEAKER_00What's this gold pieces?
SPEAKER_02Yes, you have 150 gold pieces each to buy equipment with.
SPEAKER_00Okay. We both rolled 150? Hell yeah, we're we're rich.
SPEAKER_02That's pretty good, considering that you can't. What do you just you just multiply them by 10? Like what are you? Yeah, that's what this one was. Yeah, so it's at 3d6 times 10. So that's just like a little formula for what dice to roll and how to get the final number. It'll come up a lot, that kind of thing. Now, what we're gonna want to do now is uh uh uh uh look at the uh things you can buy. And so for a wizard, you're not gonna be buying a lot of armor, and you're gonna have probably I don't know of how how strict this game is about weaponry. I generally like games where the wizards can use a sword, because Gandalf used a sword, and I just don't understand what's so hard, but I mean, yeah, but nonetheless, we'll see what the game says, and we'll go by the rules here. Uh what we if it's got anything about your uh weapon limitations. Generally, Dane, since he's a fighter, can use any weapon and armor. That's gonna be how a fighter works.
SPEAKER_00I'm probably gonna go with the morning star just because it's what I have in the show. I mean, and that could that could kind of make it faster also for us to decide stuff, so whatever we have in the show. But then again, we don't necessarily have to go with that stuff, but uh I mean that's what I was planning on doing.
SPEAKER_02Okay, so uh they had they don't have Morningstar listed, they but we'll treat it. Is it a blunt morning star or is it a spiky morning star? It's uh you could go with the mace if that's in there. It's a spiky one. Okay. It says this one's blunt. Uh blunt mace? Yeah, blunt mace. Damn. Okay. Uh uh, then they've only got like the little section here.
SPEAKER_00Well, fuck it. Maybe I'll just go with a better fucking weapon. I got 150 gold pieces. What's the best weapon? A mace, yeah. I got a I got a lot of strength. I can hold like a big ass sword.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, mace is only 30. Um, you could get a uh sh a lot of things. I'm j I'm just wondering where the um This might even honestly be good.
SPEAKER_00Like the the this is like an episode. No, but like I just mean like, you know, in the actual show, going to the store and buying stuff was like, you know, part of the show. Maybe we should just be playing right now. And and we could be doing this through role play. I don't know. What do you think?
SPEAKER_02To a degree.
SPEAKER_00Uh I still I do I do need to read a little bit here, you know. Well, fuck that then. Let's just let's just keep doing this this way. This is fine.
SPEAKER_02This is actually I mean, because like did you guys bother to do stuff like come up with backstories for your characters? Oh hell no. Okay. So that's good. Yeah, a little bit.
SPEAKER_01Oh I always do.
SPEAKER_02That's not a problem. Well, hell, that's cool. Sometimes people make up like chosen ones, stories about their characters are very boring, but if your character is anything other than like the last scion of a King Arthur or something, it'll probably be very interesting. Uh uh, I like I like characters. A backstory is gonna give your character uh a lot of uh things to play off of, also when you're role-playing and we're doing, you know, you guys are doing dialogue and stuff like that. Yeah, okay. That's cool. Um so do you know, follow your heart on that. Just you know, don't you know, don't go too crazy and say that you're the king of France or anything, but like, you know. Well, let me see this list of stuff I can buy because um I'm just I was looking for where it said what a wizard can equip, and that was what was kind of holding me, but I was multitasking there.
SPEAKER_00Okay.
SPEAKER_02Usually a wizard can equip staffs. Do you want to do encumbrance stuff? I don't especially know. Um unless you know, you if you're carrying like too much, but you know, you could carry like two million dollars worth of gold, and it's like this much. It's n somebody a certain sum I've had people tell me before that gold is really heavy, and it is, but uh you could literally carry millions of dollars worth of gold, like, you know, right like Okay, so so after reviewing the list, I think that a two-handed sword is gonna be the coolest one for me because it's like a D10.
SPEAKER_00And so that sounds great. Um It costs only 15, so that's not too bad.
SPEAKER_01So can I just go ahead and buy that and can you get a lot of like you want to save your gold for other stuff too?
SPEAKER_02Or you would want I mean it's gonna save some, but it's probably gonna be more important for Dane to spend his stuff on ex on on gear because as a fighter, he relies on gear more than you do. Um and usually you're not allowed usually you're not allowed to buy magic items at the beginning. But I'm I'm not a stickler uh for that. Uh if you could afford a way, if I you know, if you could find a way to afford like a scroll or something, I'm not against it. Um I'm gonna see if it has anything about our um there's usually class limitations. Oh here it is, here it is. I found it. Okay. It was just in this little green box here. And so it says for the magic users, armor, none, weapons, dagger. Alright, that's what I wanted to know. Dagger. The staff's not a weapon. I guess they just don't I guess you're just gonna use a staff as like a magic staff and not to hit people. To be fair, when you see a wizard using a staff one-handed most of the time, it's not a very good weapon. Sure. It's in real life it wouldn't be. Uh you they don't use it like a ninja, you know.
SPEAKER_01I thought it shot things out of it. Like a nice one. They can.
SPEAKER_02They can when you get a magical one that does stuff. But the it'll be the staff that has most of the power. You're not gonna really be using it to bonk guys. But if you want your dagger, and they just say silver dagger, so I guess you get silver as a free quality of it. Seems kind of expensive. No, you can get a cheap dagger. You can get a cheap dagger for three, and you can get a silver dagger for thirty. The silver dagger, you know, for David werewolves or whatever, or a vampire, that could come in handy. But I mean, how much do you want to spend on a dagger? Is it's up to you.
SPEAKER_0030 seems like a good deal to me for a silver dagger. It's pretty high, it's twice as expensive as your two-handed sword. Oh, well, not exactly cheap, but for someone who has 150 GP, I think you can you can rock it. I mean, unless you want to do the cheaper one.
SPEAKER_02I mean, I can see a wizard having the silver dagger because you understand, you know, the the forces of the occult and stuff, and so you know that sometimes it's gonna need a silver dagger to get the job done. Right. You might even have to pass it to Dane to do the job sometime. So I could buy it now? Yeah, you can buy it now out of your exit. And then it's uh it was dirty, right? Yeah, it costs. You can throw it if you have to. And you'll write down that it does one d4 damage. Can can he carry more than one dagger on him, though? Or can you just have one? You can have as many daggers as you want, but I mean I wouldn't throw silver at everybody, I thought.
SPEAKER_00You should buy some of the cheaper daggers too. Okay. Have some of those on you.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, that'll give you something to do other when you're out of a spell. So they're only three each if you want regular daggers.
SPEAKER_00I'm surprised it doesn't let him have darts.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, they're pretty strict in this one. Uh Dungeon Call Classics is a little bit more chill. You can have your wizard use a sword, and I love that. I was a wizard. So I should get a few of the damn regular. Yeah, get a couple daggers. I'll get three. Um Dane armor. Um, yeah, those are three each. I don't know if you're gonna want to wear. See, there's the optional rules. Uh in the show I've got um chain mail. Okay, let's just go with chain mail. It costs 40. Okay. And I'll make your armor class uh it says five, but it's gonna make it 14. Okay, just right. We're using the Do you have any cold water?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, do you want to see the sparkling? Alright, just cold sparkling and normal temperature regular.
SPEAKER_01I'll take the cold sparkling though.
SPEAKER_00Cool.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I'm a regular temperature guy until I get my Mexico adventure going.
SPEAKER_01I will never, ever understand why when you go to a really nice restaurant, they bring you lukewarm water. I don't think it's a lot of fun. Here we go.
SPEAKER_02Nobody's ever explained it to me, and I don't get it. Alright. They just don't want you to have too much time, too much fun. You know, they're like, we want you to buy something. Alright. Alright, right. So, um, yeah, so we got your armor, and you got that that was 40.
SPEAKER_00Okay. Okay. Okay, okay. So I'm going down to 95 GP here on the sheet. I got chain mail armor. Gives me an AC of 14, not too high. No, but not too bad. I mean, how much would plate mail be?
SPEAKER_02It would just be 20 more, and you would have an armor class of 16. Uh, let's just fucking do that. Yeah, let's just pull the trigger. I'm going down to 75 GP and I'm going up to 16 AC. And then you have a two-handed sword, so a shield is just right out for you. Right, right. Sorry, bro. You can't do both. That's okay.
SPEAKER_00I'm up at 16 AC, that's that's good. You could get maybe you uh a longbow? Um oh I was thinking crossbow. Okay, you're the crossbow guy? Is there is there like a difference?
SPEAKER_02Longbow is more expensive and does a uh let's do longbow. More it does they do about the same damage. Uh longbow.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. You want to do longbow? Uh wait. Uh does it do more damage than a crossbow?
SPEAKER_02It probably does. They do the same damage. But the crossbow but the butt but the reload on a crossbow takes longer. Well, I guess longbow then. Yeah, I would go with longbow. How much is a longbow?
SPEAKER_00A longbow will run you 40. Okay, going down to 35. Oh, this is brutal. But I thought I'm nice and geared up now. And then you're gonna want to buy some arrows.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, how much are the arrows? They are it's five gold pieces for 20.
SPEAKER_00Okay, going down to 30, I got 20 arrows. Okay. We're in critical territory now. Got 30 GP. 20 arrows. How much how much damage does one arrow do? One D6.
SPEAKER_02This is a one D6 loving game.
SPEAKER_00You know, I gotta say, it's been a minute since I was not a DM and I was a player, and it feels good to be back in this side of things. It's it's it's fun, and I'm actually so used to being a DM that it's like it feels great. I I mean I'm playing a video game over here. This is someone else's brain is the computer now.
SPEAKER_02And fortunately, I have a very visual mind, so I'm very good at describing things. Uh so so um what we would do next is uh we would look if there's anything else that you might want to get. Let's look at the other equipment just in case, because like, you know, there's stuff that's not weapons that you might they might have, you know. I think they're not gonna I don't think that the main shop's gonna have magic items, but when we do have magic items, the money you save you can spend on that, you know, later. Um we've got weapons and armor. Okay, and then there should be like just adventuring gear. Okay. So this is where we spend the rest of our money. I will tell you right now, for some reason a ten-foot pole is like the greatest thing ever.
SPEAKER_00It's the most expensive thing ever? No, no, it only costs one gold. Oh, so you're saying you always bring one on a dungeon adventure?
SPEAKER_02You know, all those hor- I don't know. Remember what we played before? Uh, and we raided some of those weird traps that made no sense whatsoever. You know what I mean? Like where the ceilings made out of like the the answer is always a 10-foot pole somewhere in there. It's like uh somewhere a 10-foot pole will do what you need to get you through the you know what I mean? But you know, um iron spikes that you use those to keep the door open or to keep a door closed, like in a dungeon, you're like, I don't want to fight that troll. Let's just spike the door, so to speak. Uh crowbar, I'm sure you know what those are good for. How much are iron spikes? Iron spikes for 12 is only one gold. Alright. I'm I'm getting 12 iron spikes for one gold. Uh, you might also want things. Here's here's I mean there's a list here, but there's backpack. I need you backpack. How much is that? Five.
SPEAKER_00Five five what? Gold. There's no way. Are you serious?
SPEAKER_02I have to buy that? Their economy is just in ruins right now. I think it's because of the uh the current conflict in uh the reptile man island. God damn it, dude. I'm down to twenty. That's okay. Gold! You you gotta don't worry, you can also buy crowbars, garlic, grappling hooks, hammers. You might need the hammers with the the spikes. Hold on. The iron spikes sent me back five fucking gold pieces.
SPEAKER_00The iron spikes cost you one, the backpack cost you five. Ye y yeah, okay, wait. Oh, I hope I didn't charge myself five then for the I think I might have actually. Oh yeah, I did. Okay, so I'm actually supposed to be at twenty-four.
SPEAKER_02But there's lanterns, mirrors, oil, rations, rations. Everybody can use. How much are rations? Because we both need to buy that. Uh uh seven days uh you can get by on five, or you can get the really good rations that are through twice as good uh or three times as good. I'm getting the shitty ones. They give you the shitty ones. Five gold pieces for a seven-day ration. Okay. Alright, I'm going down to 19. I got my rations. I need a uh water skin.
SPEAKER_00Uh yes, a water skin will cost one. Did you Oh, nice. Um, did you say the rations were five days worth or seven?
SPEAKER_02Seven days. Okay. I gotta get a water skin too, right? Oh if you want. Yeah. It's only one. Yeah, it's only one. You'll probably have plenty of money to buy equipment. There's also they have a couple of weird items here that are kind of quote unquote mystical, like wolf's mane, uh mirror, uh a lantern could be useful. Wizard with a lantern, like the hermit.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, the thing okay, so torches. How much are we talking for some torches?
SPEAKER_02Torches? You can get six for one gold piece.
SPEAKER_00Okay, I'll get six torches. Okay. Um, but how the how are we gonna light that though? Are you gonna light matchbox thingy?
SPEAKER_02I'll I'll I'll I'm gonna they don't have the uh it's called a tinder box. Right. So yes, they do. You have those costs three. Three gold for a tinder box? I know, dude. The they're gold, these gold prices Insane. I know. They're simplifying the game to save things gold. In real life, you wouldn't give a whole gold piece for a backpack. I mean, come on, dude. You have to feed a family of four for like two years. What was it, three gold pieces for a lighter?
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_02But this is this is the shop at the corner where like all the adventurers come out of the dungeon and like they just like overcharge, you know? Right.
SPEAKER_01It's kinda like it's kind of like uh uh That's why that little guy sold you one gram of marijuana for the show.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, that's the that's the that's for the victory bowl at the end. I I've learned a lesson too. It's best to smoke at the either in the middle or at the end of the adventure, not at the beginning. Fair enough, yeah. Well, I mean I like it, but you know what I mean. You know what happens. Everyone gets confused. Mm-hmm. Hey, do they sell potions at the at that point? Nine.
SPEAKER_00Uh you're gonna have to find your potions in the adventure. Okay. Um I just like I mean, okay, so wait, we I got some iron spikes. Mm-hmm. How about like a I think I probably need like a little hammer to hammer those little tables? Hammer time, the little hammer costs two.
SPEAKER_02I can just see that I can just see the the little halfling guy that's like selling you this that's like, oh yeah, dude, that's gonna cost you two gold pieces, alright.
SPEAKER_00I just think it's funny though that this is part of the game. It is it's like if we got into the dungeon and we had these iron spikes and we're like, we've got some trolls chasing us, we've gotta hammer the iron spikes in. Did you get a hammer to iron hammer them in? Fuck no, I didn't. It's like that you have to think of this shit.
SPEAKER_02And you don't want to try to use like the butt of your sword or nothing. No!
SPEAKER_00No, you don't. Okay, and I've got fucking torches. We've got the tinder box. Yes. Okay, well, anything else that we might need from this place? You said the ten-foot pole. How much is that? One gold. I'll get the ten-foot pole. Get the ten-foot pole. Do you think I can carry that with all this other shit?
SPEAKER_02Yeah, it's just a pole. So it's I I imagine that it being like uh maybe kind of like uh pool cue technology being used there so you don't have to have the whole thing, you know, in a ten-foot mode all the time, you know. Maybe you can like you know. How much is a mirror? A mirror. Oh, that's five. Okay, I'm not gonna get the mirror. Okay. The wizard could get a mirror. You might need that to see if she has a ghost or something. Yeah. You wanna get a mirror? It's kinda but you know, you might not. It's up to you. I haven't planned anything for that yet, but a mirror to see a ghost? Yeah, it's to look around corners. Oh yeah, look around corners or just whatever. Yeah, what is a mirror? It's like uh a mirror was three. Yeah. Five. Uh oh wait. No problem. You can buy stuff later, right?
SPEAKER_00Oh yes, you can always buy stuff later. Yeah, we're gonna be. Which I'm starting to think we should just jump into an adventure. We've been pre-gaming for like almost exactly an hour.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, but that's a that's a podcast in itself. You you're doing that for people that don't know anything about role-playing games. You just laid out a whole lot of information that's interesting. That's true. That could be the first podcast.
SPEAKER_02And we could also talk about how we make a how like, you know, if you also want to, we can also talk about how dungeons are made. Because there are pre-made dungeons, but for I think what we're doing, I'm probably gonna need to like plan it for you two guys. Well, because otherwise you could run into situations you're not gonna be able to handle, you know what I mean? So you're you're gonna have to have like a little bit of uh one time at the bar, you know, kind of you know, like well, a couple like maybe like a few little short one-shots, you know what I mean, to just get you some experience. Now, the way experience and dungeons work is generally what you would do, and they have a table in this game to do it, I think. Yeah. And they have a whole thing about awarding XP, uh, designing talents, design. And I can do all this stuff, trust me. If you just let me take this book with me when I go home, I'll just Oh, sure, yeah, yeah. I'll I'll uh use it to to I'll write a whole can I can write a whole campaign around it. I've already got ideas.
SPEAKER_00Well, here's here's something I was thinking though. Okay. I mean, look, yeah, that's that's cool, that's fine, yeah and good and everything, but I really am someone that wants to go through the old modules. If we could. I mean, I know that those old modules would obliterate to low-level characters, but it's like I don't know. I mean, look, it's it's not we don't have to do this any any one way. Sure, sure. But it's like there's this whole library of literature that so many people will never get to experience. That was written by these guys back in the 70s and 80s and stuff. And we've got possibly the opportunity to go through and see the Isle of Dread, um, maybe even the Temple of Elemental Evil. I mean, no, that's too crazy for two guys. Maybe if we had some more people.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, yeah. See, that's the the only thing is that just in my experience, uh, I love those dungeons. You just have to have enough people to play them. Well, then how about this?
SPEAKER_00You you're someone who's played all that stuff. Yeah, yeah.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_00Okay, so from your brain will come the tropes of all of those things. It's very weird. We will get to experience that old school world.
SPEAKER_02Because I have friends that literally played from like level uh one to level 20 that never played. Well, because I'd already had. I I played in the 80s, and in the 80s we would, you know, like you're talking about, we would have these modules. You could get them for like four bucks at a shop, and they would have like a whole row of them.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_02And you would just go, okay, what are we playing today? And we would just pick one of them and we would play it. Um but yeah, for a small group, it that's kind of we kind of want there to be a lot of like non-player character interaction, and you know, just you know, that kind of stuff. Stuff that we weren't doing when we just played before, for example, that uh this this more dramatic, you know, that may more for uh entertaining, you know, you know you come across a character that's like a a little interesting dude, or just that we can mine for drama role-playing. That's true.
SPEAKER_00But I'll I will yes, and that with I will say that one of the things that annoys me about stuff like the biggest podcast that will not be named is that there's so much of that.
SPEAKER_02Right, right. And so I think they do that a little mud. I know what you're talking about. What? They they they they spend a lot of time like doing goofy stuff that's not real.
SPEAKER_00Monologuing back and forth with like NPCs who show up because they're voice actors. Right, right. They want to get a lot of talking and voice acting in and stuff. And this is not a mainstream podcast.
SPEAKER_01You're talking about it. What kind of I thought you were talking about Joe Rogan. There are no no. That's like you still the biggest podcast number.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, well, well, no, he's talking about the biggest DD podcast. Oh, the biggest DD podcast. There's there's uh there are several, including one by like a famous cart shooter guy. There's a book where where like the guys will go around and they'll be like, oh, we encountered Bob the Baker, and then every single character has like this oh wow, well, you know, and it I I do feel you on that. Like I'll I'll I'll I'll definitely moderate that level of stuff.
SPEAKER_00One of the great one of the things that I think is the coolest about old school DD is that you are in this essentially like maze that is populated by these monsters, and the the thing that's taking up your time in this session of two hours is like okay, do we go left or right? Fucking left, I guess. Alright, we're going 20 yards. There's a door, okay. There's two doors. Okay, listen at this door. See how well you can listen. Okay, I listened pretty well. Okay, I heard some shit. Well, let's go in. Okay, oh fuck, there's some guys in here. You know, and it's just like variations on all that. Yes. And and then, you know, we can we can get into some interesting shit that happens. Sure, sure. All kinds of crazy shit can happen.
SPEAKER_02And and like a lot of the stuff, I would say, you know, this is the thing I've learned for certain. You don't have to write comedy into the characters. Like if you if you're too silly, the silly stuff is gonna happen, right? Exactly. So, like, if you're playing a character that's silly on top of that, it's just gonna get corny really quick. You know what I mean? So just you can just play your character Seer Bog serious, and funny stuff will happen. Like where like a monkey just beats up one of your characters and he gets trapped in a bubble or something. That happened in a published adventure I played, by the way. Um, and there's just a lot of experiences that you'll have for the first time, like the first time you're running into a mimic or something. But you know, that are they're gonna be funny. And then there's gonna be, you know, with this level, I'm just terrified. I mean, one one bad roll could could kill a level one DD character so easy. You really have to, like, then they don't really, in my experience, most level one DD adventures are not written for level one characters. It'll say playable by level one, and then it'll say maybe one or two, you know, and then you'll play with your level one characters and get killed in like the first room and have to re-roll the whole party. I've had that happen before. Uh yeah, I've seen something similar happen. Also, I've spent eight hours arguing over what the next plan of action is with one of my friends.
SPEAKER_00Oh yeah, we we want to avoid that for sure.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, but that was when I was young, you know. We don't I don't do that now, but we we did. We're like, I want to attack, I want to run, and we just argued. We just are and this is like the nicest guy in the world that you would never argue with. But um, yeah, so that can happen in any game.
SPEAKER_00I will s I will say this. Um, I I feel like we might not have s said for sure if we know that the wizard guy has bought everything that he needs to buy. Did we did you think buy everything you needed to buy? I bought what I need. I got daggers and Surday's rations and a water skin.
SPEAKER_01Got a water skin?
SPEAKER_00You know what? Do they have glass vials at all in in there?
SPEAKER_02No, they have a very tight list here of stuff. So uh I read out everything that you can buy.
SPEAKER_03Okay.
SPEAKER_02Um now there are You guys are not ready to buy a water vessel or anything. Um you there there are horses and animals. Uh I level one that's not gonna come up yet. I think we'll buy a horse later. You know what I mean? Right now you're like a squire on the loose. I mean, I'm down to eleven GP. Yeah, I don't think we've got horse money. How uh how much GP you got over there? 95. Yeah. He's doing well he did there's not as much for him to buy, you know.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Um I mean, do you uh well okay. But wizard's gonna need a backpack. I mean, can I get one? I'll take one, yeah. Yeah. How much is that? Five. Okay, that's five. We don't think the wizard can start out with like one of them bags of holding or anything like that.
SPEAKER_02A bag of holding? No.
SPEAKER_00No, that's too much.
SPEAKER_02Uh you can get one though, if I think they're in here. What is the bag of holding? It's a bag that basically holds an infinite amount of stuff. And you don't need that level one. That's something. Yeah. And then like there's all sorts of and then like there's a lot of meta humor about them. Because all the DD items they've been around for like 50 years, so just about everybody has gone, hey, if I had a magic item that did this, so there's there's they've written a cartoon about it, you know, like the bag of holding with a guy that they put inside of there that built a kin pyre out of the gold that they left in there, and you feel like the bag of holding has its own ecology after a while because it's got so much stuff in it. A little world within a bag of holding. Yeah. I like that. I've seen that one before. Or, you know, there's the deck of many things, which is also a good way. Then there's a trick with that. Uh just draw you you get to draw that is basically you draw a random card and it'll do a random thing to you. And sometimes it's bad, sometimes it's good. So the trick is to draw like a ton of cards. So you get to finish your draw no matter what happens. So if you get petrified in the middle, you might get a wish. You know what I mean? So yeah, that way you can kind of get out of it. You know, it's it's it's a there's a strategy for everything. But anyway, the main thing that we should do, um we should we we should talk about just kind of how like also just the game would work, right? So say we were playing we could just do a an example type of thing of what like a fight would be like, for example, right? So if we were in a battle, we would roll initiative, would be the first thing that happens. And um I'm sure that this game's got some idiosyncratic way of doing it. In old DD, you would roll a D10. And uh I like the way we used to do it with A D D. Yes, yes.
SPEAKER_00That's what I was thinking, is we would just we would roll a D10, right? It was D6s. Oh, it was D6's? Yeah. Okay, let's lose. Now when I used to ro run this system as a DM, what I used to do, and we probably shouldn't do it this way, is that I would just always go clockwise around the table. Which w would not work for us because we have two players. So that would mean one of us would always go first.
SPEAKER_02I yeah, I'd always make them roll. I used to have a friend uh uh that would uh keep track of initiative and just like on the side while he played, oh that guy he was called a co-GM. Oh he would look things up while we ran, like I'd be like, hey, would you look up what this spell does? And then he would look it up while I could continue narrating what we're doing.
SPEAKER_00That's probably a somewhat um universal experience at tables, is that sometimes there's a co-GM.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, there's like a guy that's like just really good at looking things up in the book or what does the G stand for? Game. Okay, co-game master. Yeah, it's a game master. Um it's still it's still like a l not as cool as Dungeon Master. Dungeon Master makes it sound like you're like you got bitches and stuff, you know.
SPEAKER_00The game master, it's like you're a referee, you know. So uh I might be I'm I'm jumping ahead into the the world of the game, but as I look down at these rations, what do they look like?
SPEAKER_02I would figure it's something like uh it's not iron rations, so it wouldn't be beef jerky. It would be something that was like dry. I would figure it'd be like cakes or something like that, or like, you know, the old school cakes, not like the cakes with the icing on them, but like something that, you know, some kind of biscuit, you know, something that because the reason you would say biscuit is because it would be cooked twice. According to the original meaning of biscuit, right? It would be like seriously cooked to where like it could retain it wouldn't spoil very quickly. You know what I mean? Like so you'd think. It'd be something kind of not very tasty bread.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_01That makes sense. In the Marine Corps, we ate what were called MREs. Yeah. So I it wouldn't bother me to have nothing but bread.
SPEAKER_02Oh cool. My my friend we used to play with was in the Marine Corps and he had marine dice, but they were the worst. Because they had the little flag with the you know the marine symbol on the for the dots, the pips. Oh, wow. But that seems like tedious chuck work. It actually is kind of also there was really hard to read them.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_02And they never rolled very well. But you know, and it was funny, also, he played a soldier in one of the games we played, which we just all thought was funny.
SPEAKER_01Well, MRE stand for meals ready to eat. Yeah. The ones in the brown bags all suck. Spaghetti is the only one that's even passable. Right, right. But the ones in the white bag for the winter are really good. They got a lot of stuff in there too, not just the meal.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, because you got you can't have like a calorie deficit when it's cold and die. But like when it's winter, you know, the rest of the time, it's like you don't want them to eat them too much. So you they make them nasty on purpose.
SPEAKER_01I can't even remember what they had. The worst thing you could get was omelet with ham. That was just horrible. If you like Tabasco, you could make it work. Because every MRE comes with a little thing in Tabasco. Oh yeah? But I don't like Tabasco. I don't either. So that didn't help me.
SPEAKER_02So yeah, it's it'd probably be like these, like it'd be like a little bag of like flavor, like like if cookies were bad. Like if cookies didn't like it. It sounds fine.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, just like flavorless like cookies. Did it did it say on there at all like map making materials? No. Okay.
SPEAKER_02So I'll I'll I'll assume anything that's not on the list that would be considered like uh like you know, like if you wanted a rusty nail or a piece of paper, you can have that. You know, I'm not gonna be a stickler about anything like that. You don't have to buy just off the sheet. You could always like, you know, steal a nose ring off a cow or something if you, you know, if that feels that you make sure.
SPEAKER_00Okay, I'm just gonna write down like uh parchment and uh ink and quill. Is that okay? Sure. Though I would expect it to be the wizard who did all that. Well, I'm all on to it right now.
SPEAKER_02Your character is intelligent enough that we could make an argument that he's a literate fighter. You know what I mean? Like he was trained by like somebody who was I mean, they don't have a paladin class in here.
SPEAKER_00So you'd be kind of like a knightly dude that was maybe For some reason, I just feel like maybe it's my lawful nature. Like Blythe the Wizard uh cares less about things like maps. I don't know. Am I crazy? I mean what do you think? He might not. He's chaotic now that we know. You know what I mean? What do you think? Um, I'm supposed to get a map. Well, you know how we have a map in in the game and the show? Like, um, do you feel like your character of the wizard would be much one for being the map keeper?
SPEAKER_01I personally, as a human being, don't like maps.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01I'll have to figure out where I'm going just by looking around.
SPEAKER_00Well, I'm gonna have map making equipment on me. So I'm uh we just in case we need it. Okay. That works out. Um Do I get a bonus for the 13 wisdom I have, by the way?
SPEAKER_02Yeah, you probab uh no, I think it starts well, maybe you do. Maybe you do. Let me double check here. Uh, because I was mainly focusing on our main attributes, but you're right to check that. Um, beep, beep, beep, beep, beep, beep, beep, beep.
SPEAKER_00I appreciate that you're finding your way around this book so far.
SPEAKER_02Oh, I'm a very fast learner. I used to like you could like give me like a 30-minute lecture on wallpaper, and I could sell wallpaper for five years, you know what I mean? Like it's cool, man. I uh that's what I think I have is what's called learning plasticity, which is a very handy thing to have. Okay, so uh for dexterity, uh uh um does anybody have a 12 or bet? Does anyone have a 13? No? No. Okay. Uh what's your dex over there? Dex wait, dex oh, ten. Okay, so you but you do have a high uh constitution and charisma, right? Yeah. Well, here is the good news, finally. Well, your charisma's 13, right? Your constitution's 13, right? Yeah. You get an extra hit point. So let's Oh shit. How about you? What's your constitution? Oh, your stuff's all generic because your wisdom, right? 11. So your wisdom modifier will give you plus one on magic safes. Oh, hell yeah. Me? Um you don't get one. Oh, I don't get a hit point? No, you get the hit point. You get the hit point. You're fine. He just gets one different thing because he has different attributes. Alright. Um, there is a charisma modifier. You get plus one, or you could write wherever you want. So now it's four. Yeah, no, no, no. It's still a 13, but you get plus one to NPC reactions.
SPEAKER_01When you said that hit point, does that take my hit points from two to three?
SPEAKER_02Yes, that's correct.
SPEAKER_01It's permanent. What is this plus one?
SPEAKER_02How does that work? That just write plus one to NPC reactions. If we decide to roll for it rather than, you know, because sometimes we will. Sometimes we're just gonna be like, Well, there are these guys moves. Sometimes it's gonna be obvious. I don't always use the reaction thing, but sometimes when you just want to spice things up, you're like, Do they like you, do they hate you? Most of the time, context will tell you. You know, if you show up at a guard gate and you try to attack the place, the guards aren't gonna like you. You know, I don't need to roll for that. But like if you uh are walking through the city, you meet some random elf, maybe he'll like you, maybe he won't, you know, and that can affect your day, you know.
SPEAKER_01Whether not necessarily like combat, but whether he helps you with it. So what that means is whenever I encounter him, I've got 13 charisma. Now I've got 14. No, it just means when you roll the dice, you get plus one on them.
SPEAKER_02Okay, alright. Yeah. Yeah, that's like uh uh it's kind of it is confusing though at first. You'll you'll get the hang of it pretty quick though. Um and then uh we got uh but we found our equipment. Yeah, yeah. And then we've got, let's see, let's see, in this game, I was gonna talk about how they do initiative and stuff like that, so we could just kind of kind of get a good head uh a handle on what uh uh combat in this game is. Normally, like I said, I would have it known, but I'm just kind of reading it out of this book because we agreed to do this one. Um what was that? This one got some crud on it. Let's see. Forgot what I used to get that off. Um got some crap on one of the pages? Yeah. Yikes. That's alright. It looks like blood too. But somebody got serious. It got serious. It's probably just coffee or chocolate. It's probably just coffee. It all it all, you know, any kind of brown stain just leaves you with the same feeling. Okay, let's see. Um, that's strongholds. Wow, we're way ahead of ourselves. We do not need to worry about strongholds. Where is the stuff about sword fighting? Combat tables, normal humans. Uh making an attack roll. Okay, I know how that works. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah. Okay. Yeah, that go. Thank gosh. We're not using that term. Okay, combat issues, blindness. That's all great. I just want to know where is an issue. Here we are. 1d6 for initiative. So, um, let us let's say, let's just say, you know, we're gonna use this generic wizard, and you've got a you have a fighter miniature.
SPEAKER_00We're just using this for oh uh, you know, shit. You know, I was honestly just gonna use this as my menu for myself. Hey, we can use this for now.
SPEAKER_02Okay, let's just say we're not gonna we're not gonna be worried too much about the uh the map or anything like that, but we're just gonna use this as a phrase so you can visualize what's going on. We ran into a situation where the two of you guys were like hanging out on the wrong side of town, which we're gonna say is the east side in every town ever built. Um, and you just kind of got a little into like it, you know, you're you're thinking maybe there's like something, there's this old house, you know, maybe there's like a wizard there, or maybe somebody left something behind because everyone's afraid to go over here to this side of town or something. And you encountered a skeleton. Let's just say, we're gonna do this as a test because you guys are we might end up giving you experience for this, but if it would help, but we just kind of want to get used to the system, right? So what you would do is you would say, Oh, you've been dun da. And like in a video game, the music would change, and then they do the little spin-around thing, and then it's like dun dun dun dun dun dun dun dun. So you will you would both roll a d6 for initiative, and then I'll roll a d6 for the monster. Some people hide the dice, we're not gonna be doing that today. So, uh, yeah, that's not the role. That's a three, what you get. You got a one. So this is what we're afraid of. So the the skeleton got it first, and um fortunately you saw him coming because they're silent when they move, right? And so he's coming out, he looks just like that. Everyone's seen that wonderful film. Uh uh Jason and the Argonauts, if you know, if you're not familiar.
SPEAKER_01One of my comedy sketches this year is a pirate movie that's all cartoonish, and it looks just like that thing. Skeletons that I have coming out. Classic, classic Jason and the Argonauts type design. Okay, so uh you can find a bunch of skeletons over green screens on YouTube, so that's why. I have found that out recently. Yeah, there's a lot of stuff on there. There are. It's just about anything you want on a green screen is on YouTube. That's over a green screen.
SPEAKER_02That is true. And then also, you know, uh uh skeletons are just such a classic monster. That's kind of why I like was like, hey, you know, if you're gonna fight something first, just to test the rules, fight a skeleton, alright? Okay, so I what I want to see now, and I'm just checking here, is what this game's rule on movement is, but typically what I would expect is that he's gonna be able to move and attack, right? Uh not just move. That would be kind of boring. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, for sure. So um what I would do in this case is he he he he got just to simplify it, he's gonna be like, oh man, you know, he's like he's like, there's some humans or they wouldn't normally talk, but he's like, there's some humans over there, and he's like, I'm gonna pick one of them to attack now. If you wanted to be totally totally fair, which you really shouldn't always, he's gonna just attack one of you randomly, right? Because he doesn't, you know, he's not concerned. So we'll say you're one, two, and you're three, four, and then I roll three, four. So he's oh see, this could be the horror this will could this is a great thing to show you. This could be the horrible end of a wizard already. So he comes running at you. Ah and um he's got one attack. Good lord. Is it already over? Haha, no, it's not! He rolled a big fat four, and there is no game in the world where that's gonna hit you. Especially not with a guy with a uh uh Thacko of zero or whatever. And so he runs up to you and misses you, and he could have killed you in one shot easily. He's got a sword that that could do one d6. So um the next one to go is going to be Dane's character. What's Dane's character, Edward the Adventurer? Yeah. Okay. Your name is L was it, Lythe or Blythe. Blythe. Okay, I had a friend named Brian Blythe. Uh um, okay, so um you get the move, right? Okay. Now this thing has randomly generated hit points. So that's how much it's gonna have right there. You guys wouldn't always know what that is, okay?
SPEAKER_00And then uh so you would need to hear for the listener, he rolled a three for the hit points of the skeleton.
SPEAKER_02Yes, and you have a uh one of his armor class. Where is your armor class at, bro? Well, this monster's armor class is a twelve. Okay, so you would need to roll a twelve or better, and you're plus one because you're strength. Well, so I need to roll thirty an eleven or better. Totally.
SPEAKER_00Okay. Alright.
unknownOkay.
SPEAKER_00Come on, man. Okay, I rolled a fucking two.
SPEAKER_02Okay, so continuing the calipade of joy, you rolled a two. So, you know, he heroically does not strike the skeleton, leaving it to be your turn. Now you have a very simple mathematical equation to do. Uh you can either take your chances and try to hit him with the dagger, maybe kill him in one hit, or you could just say, screw taking my chances and just fire a magic missile and hit him automatically. And I would probably go with that one.
SPEAKER_01Then I'll be out of magic missiles, won't I?
SPEAKER_00Yes, that is the that is the Yeah, but if he hits you with that sword, you're gonna be out of life. So you weren't.
SPEAKER_01Skeletons, the worst thing you can encounter out here?
SPEAKER_00We're just in the training uh room. Yeah, we're in the training room.
SPEAKER_02So you don't, you don't in this case, you don't have to like you don't have you don't have to worry about your inventory as much. Just just see if you can uh so you could still make the choice though. Would you like would you prefer? No, that's exactly how you need to think. And fortunately, you probably you've got plenty of experience planning for adventures in real life, so you know about this kind of thing. Um but yeah, in this case, you can just you could probably I would I would give you the the go-ahead to just go ahead and fire off the spell and just say hey magic missiles. Yeah, magic missiles. This is the this is the dirty page you see. Yeah, it looks like I might have smashed a bug in there or something. No, a bug wouldn't have made this much of a mess. I don't even dark brown like you can use um white vinegar. That's what it was. Okay. You put white vinegar because white vinegar, I get like a giant thing because I don't, you know, you don't use that much. But you put it in a little thing and you just kind of dab it, and it'll eventually just take it off, and then when it won't leave the paperwork after you're done.
SPEAKER_00Well, any good spell book is stained with blood from the dungeon.
SPEAKER_02It's true. So we got the this is oh I'm in cleric spells. No wonder I couldn't find it. Okay. We'll get out of cleric spells. Okay. Also, yeah, I almost I didn't do it, but I I do have Dungeons Synth music I've created if you ever want to use it as background music. Oh, that that's a good idea. I've got actually I've got two records out, and then I've got a bunch of unreleased stuff. And that's just just music about DD. So yeah, I was looking up for the magic missile description. But do you want to attack him? Do you want to try to take your chances? You'd have to roll a 12 on the D20 to hit him with the dagger.
SPEAKER_00Or do you just want to do it with the magic missile? Just go with the magic missile, yeah.
SPEAKER_02That is probably, I mean, you know, this is what I would do. So he casts his first official spell. And he well, at least outside of uh uh uh band practice and whatnot, and uh blast him with the magic missile. And now I'm just looking for the description because I though I do know it. One D6 plus one damage. So yeah, roll the D6.
unknownHa ha!
SPEAKER_02Hell yeah! You will blurry him! Blam! Bone shards go flying everywhere as blue magic energy darts tread his.
SPEAKER_01That's another thing. The blue magic energy, that's another green screen thing you could do for skeletons.
SPEAKER_00Honestly, we kind of already are. Oh, you are where you use yeah. Well, so you know, I would love to get an animation of a skeleton being blown apart. But Well, they they are.
SPEAKER_01Those are on there. Or you can just have them. Not blown apart, but like they get stabbed, they get stabbed by a sword you can't see, so you obviously put your own in there, and they just fall completely apart into a pile.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, but I I really do want to see those hose get blown apart. But I will say, uh Steven's wondrous description just now was very vibrant in my mind. Appreciated it greatly.
SPEAKER_02What'd I do with this one? So uh you didn't have to roll to a strike because you um uh used magic missile for your turn. So basically you defeated it in the in the training mode. So that also showed that that's just to kind of give you an idea of just like if you were to do that. So so say if you were to continue, you'd be like, well, you're out of spells, so your guy is kind of like kind of like a gun with no ammo in him right now. And now Day's guy is good to go, and you can still be helpful, but say in this situation you're not really in a dungeon, you're just kind of over here on the nasty side of Abilene or whatever. What would have been the purpose of this role? Uh that role would have been if you were striking with your dagger instead.
SPEAKER_01Oh, okay.
SPEAKER_02And if you struck with your dagger, you would have to roll holla high.
SPEAKER_01I rolled this and I thought you meant I had to roll this one also. Usually holding a D20 region.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, yeah, you didn't have to because the spell you use automatically hits.
SPEAKER_00But if yeah, yeah, magic missile always hits every time. Okay.
SPEAKER_02And in the the the famous joke from the old skit was the guy's like, I fired the magic missile at the darkness, and it's just like, dude, the darkness isn't the target. You can't fire. Then they just argues with the DM for 10 minutes.
SPEAKER_00But like, uh uh because like you can't the dark- I fire it into the darkness, expecting it to just automatically heat-seek whatever's out there that's gonna be a good thing. Yeah, no, it doesn't work.
SPEAKER_02No, it doesn't. That's not how this dreamer is gonna work. Okay, so what we would do then, I mean, if you want to be completely mechanical about it, is we would look at like, okay, so they went into uh the edge of the city and they discovered an undead in a in a in a kind of a rundown part of the city. So you know there's probably something more going on here, and this is also why people don't come back. But you also know you probably need to rest and study your spell to come back, because you don't want to go into the situation unarmed. So what we would do is we would give you experience. Just a little something to grow on, right? And uh the way that this game handles experience, I do know that you guys would get a 5% bonus, but boy is level one a mean level in this game.
unknownLike, whoo!
SPEAKER_02Level one, okay. Um and that guy didn't have any treasure. We're not trying to treasure you up, but we do want to get you with some experience. Uh well, from killing one skeleton? Well from me missing one time? I get exactly. That was a experience. Failure teaches you know, they always say failure teaches you more than success ever would. That's just that's just me being nice. Uh monster, it's got one hit dice. So don't worry. Uh you got five with a bonus experience. Both got six experience points. So do you no don't nothing too crazy. Just write down that you got six experience points. See, you're not where does that go? Just anywhere? You'll have to create a new place for it. We usually use XP or EXP as the abbreviation. I got six, you said? Yeah, you got six. That's from the dice, rolling the dice? No, that was from killing the monster. Okay. So when you killed the monster, um generally that that would go, okay, now you get your experience rewards. Um, I've played with people who did not take care to keep track of that very well. And I like to keep track of it as it happens. Because that way you could tell me when you go, hey, how much experience does it take to go up a level? How much do you got? You know, and then you can read it off to me. Now, let's see, leveling here. Uh uh, I don't think you're gonna go up a level off of five, but if you did, I'd let you. Okay. Let's see, it says, um Division of Experience, yes, yes, yes. Defeated monsters, right? We got that down. Um, but what does it say about and it shows me the levels, but there should be like a tail maybe it's gonna be at the beginning right here.
SPEAKER_00Uh wouldn't it be in the class descriptions for each class?
SPEAKER_02It would show like not on this one. Um they're very brief. Um they do have a thing on experience points, and uh they have a thing on uh blah blah blah. Each c class specifies the number. So yeah, you're right. You're you're a hundred percent. Yeah, I think there's tables on on those pages for each class. Yeah. So that that that battle r was one of you need 2,000 to get to level two. So that six isn't gonna ruin you. And then uh so um we just have to fight a lot. Let's see, okay, how many more one-time bat yeah, that's not gonna be how it goes most of the time, though. You're gonna fight like like two skeletons or three skeletons.
SPEAKER_00Well, alright.
SPEAKER_02I mean, hopefully, well you'll have some control, hopefully, over hey, if I see a big group of monsters, do I even want to fight them or do I want to go around them? Because that's a big thing too in the in the game, is just avoiding monsters. You know, if you could avoid them, avoid them. You know, why fight every single dude, you know? Like, you know. But uh as far as this goes, uh you got a little you got a little hit start there, and then um you would also get experience for doing a couple of things. Uh you would get it for ex for defeating monsters, um, and for just like uh uh extraordinary like if if if like say for example that skeleton was like on fire, you you know, I can make it worth more or something like that. Or if it was like a higher level skeleton, because there are such undead that it gets more and more there's like tons of things in here, and you'll you'll get to the point where you start killing things more quickly. Like a goblin, for example, uh, you know, they're still hard to hit because they're little, but you could you get to the point where you're gonna start like killing goblins really fast. It's just gonna be maybe to level. I'm I'm trying to think of a quick way. Uh there's a game I play Dungeon Call Classics where you only have to get like five experience to get to level two, and you get one experience for every encounter of whatever kind it is. So you can get to level two in like a night, you know, really easy. This one, yeah, um, it might take a little more, but that's okay, because we're really we we do what I'm gonna I just gotta do is I just gotta make sure it's got plenty of opportunities for you guys to like rest and heal between encounters and stuff like that. And you'll you'll you're gonna be like that for a little bit pretty.
SPEAKER_00I'd say, you know, if you find the chance to Cause like here's the thing. I mean, this is like a show. We need to think about the pacing. Maybe Maybe jump us up. There could pu I mean there could possibly be like some NPCs that we ally with that we end up all taking down a dragon together in town or something. Yeah. That gets us to level two or three within the next few months.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, we you I I I I could probably even with uh this system looking like it's kind of like eh, I could probably get us because what I would usually do is I'd put the adventure together with, you know, knowing. You know, I I remember one time me and my roommate started an adventure one time where we were both like level one. Actually, he was just one hit by himself, and he went into the dungeon and he stepped in a trap and he had like what ten hit points or something, and then the trap hit him for like eight. And so he turned around, went back to the village, and I rolled up a new character to help him. So I rolled up a thief, right? And then we healed, and then we went back to the dungeon. Never run there was no more traps in the entire dungeon. So I rolled this whole character just to take care of traps, and so what we ended up doing was going room to room and just murdering orcs. And by the time we were done, we had like killed like like a hundred orcs in their beds. I mean, we so it's weird how like the level one at first you're really especially a wizard tool. Wizard's just the most fragile character, but they're gonna be the most valuable later. Because there's gonna be times when you're the only one that could possibly save us all. Like that, you know, like are you you also you you'll get to situations where you're gonna be creative with your spells and you'll be like, oh, I need a magic missile, like the latch on that door, so it'll sh, you know, you know what I mean, it'll knock the door down because then the magic missile won't miss, so you can guarantee you'll hit so it's not that risky.
SPEAKER_00Well, uh, so I will say that, you know, this being the old school DD, I mean, part of the fun, it needs to be the limitations.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_00And with wizards, like, uh, yeah, you're gonna be creative sometimes. Like, because you don't have all the spells in the world. Like with modern DD, you start out with all kinds of spells and shit that you can do.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, they usually get like three or four, and then you have level zero spells too, and stuff like that.
SPEAKER_00And then you even with some of the older DD, you would get a few other things as a wizard.
SPEAKER_02And there's also different like whole systems. Like, uh, I play a game called Riffs, for example. And Riffs is kinda it's on this playing system. But you can start off with a fairly competent character at level one. Like you could your character can have like a lot of spells and a lot of armor, you know what I mean? But you're still not like super impossible tough. DD is more like you're gonna start off really small.
SPEAKER_00I just I I think it's really interesting and fun to have limitations and to work around them. Yeah. And to and to also, I mean, you've got a decent amount of gold starting out. So when we start out in the village or whatever, you should be looking around to figure out how your character can get tools to get a leg up when you get to the dungeon. Yeah. I would say look for glass vials. Uh try to see if you can possibly find any scrolls, or you know, maybe you could like learn a couple of new spells somehow.
SPEAKER_02I don't know, but uh Yeah, there it does say that you can like learn new spells with study, which is fairly vague. But uh uh I can get a handle on this game's uh uh meta pretty quick because I've got I I mean I've for fun I buy role-playing games, read them in there, play them half the time just to like read something. I mean I also read regular books, but uh um and then uh uh I can actually have something planned. I can I can have a dungeon set up for the next one, and we'll we'll we can go do that. And uh but it's just a basic introduction. I think we got the the groundwork done here.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I feel good about all the progress we made. I mean, we've got completed character sheets here from what I can see.
SPEAKER_01Uh it's a rope, it's a video game, but by hand instead of yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_02It's like and that's why a lot of uh like my brother, uh you know, he got into it in the Navy. Yeah. Because they had all the time in the world and access to each other, and that was about it.
SPEAKER_01You know, the truth is I don't remember there was one guy that might have done that, uh, but he was not like part of the cool people. Oh but and not because he did that, it was because of his attitude about a lot of other things. Oh, yeah, no, totally. But um, I'm surprised they didn't play role-playing games. We do have a lot of the Marines get a lot of downtime too.
SPEAKER_02Well, yeah, because in fact they used to even advertise the Marines in uh what you know, you remember the old commercial in the 90s where the guy would like, you know, you know he was like climbing on the lava steps and all that. You remember that one?
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_02The kind of DD one? It was kind of like a DD thing where it was like, oh, you're in the army, and then at the very end the guy turns into a Marine, but before that he's like uh he's like a they they they definitely targeted those guys.
SPEAKER_01I read I just mostly read the downtime, but a lot of those guys played hearts, they loved playing cards.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, yeah. I mean, because it's like you can do it over and over again. The rules are simple, you don't get more than anyone. Yeah. Uh but I'm also on the list too, so that would figure out.
SPEAKER_00We'll catch you guys next time here. We're gonna go through an adventure next time. Yes. What what town do you think we're gonna be in, Steve?
SPEAKER_02I'll make up some stuff. I I I had a town I was gonna use called Foxglove that used to be like my go-to town, but if you want to do something different, I'm pretty open to it.
SPEAKER_00Well, it's it's all gonna be up to our DM, Steve, and uh hopefully we will know enough about what we're doing here to make our way through a little bit of a dungeon adventure next time, but we're such low-level characters that I just don't know how to be able to really do. Maybe we'll have to make some friends in the tavern to come along with us, I think. Let them stand up front and take a lot of the hits. Yeah, yeah. We'll find some uh mercenaries, is that what they're called? Yeah. Alright. Uh see you later, folks. Alright, just does.
