the faith is being able to acknowledge your sins, being able to say those things out loud and admit, I'm guilty, I've made mistakes, I've done things that I know are wrong. 00:06:10.879 --> 00:06:13.120 Part of spiritual maturity is to do those things. 00:06:13.199 --> 00:06:24.399 And so Jesus is telling us and trying to aim us towards what he's asking us to pray in this is be willing, have a regular practice of admitting and confessing your sins to God. 00:06:24.560 --> 00:06:31.040 Make that a way of doing things that makes it, this is a consistent thing that you do in your life. Staten in his book says that um on prayer, he says, one of the biggest mistakes that we've made in the modern church is to reimagine that spiritual maturity is the need to confess less. 00:06:47.199 --> 00:06:53.839 The unspoken assumption is as I go on and have sinned in my relationship with God, I confess less because I have less to confess. 00:06:53.920 --> 00:06:54.959 I just don't sin as much. 00:06:55.120 --> 00:06:58.079 And he says true spiritual maturity is the exact opposite. 00:06:58.240 --> 00:07:00.079 It means more confession, not less. 00:07:00.240 --> 00:07:05.920 A we grow into the fullness of what Jesus actually wants his body to be and what he wants what he wants his church to be, it's not a church without sin. 00:07:16.079 --> 00:07:17.519 It's just a church get around and trying to give this message, and then I want to focus on five reasons why Jesus tells us to pray this. 00:07:48.720 --> 00:07:50.720 But three quick things, very fast. 00:07:50.959 --> 00:07:55.199 The first is this is not the first thing that Jesus tells us to pray. 00:07:55.360 --> 00:07:58.399 When you pray, begin with having your sins forgiven. 00:07:58.480 --> 00:08:00.560 That is not the first thing that he tells us to pray. 00:08:00.720 --> 00:08:05.199 It can be very easy to think that I can't come before God before I get my sins forgiven. 00:08:05.360 --> 00:08:07.839 I have to get cleaned up before dad wants to see me. 00:08:08.000 --> 00:08:08.800 That's not true. 00:08:08.959 --> 00:08:12.639 Jesus says we can ask for our needs before we even ever ask for 00:09:18.320 He's not condemning you over it, he's not shaming you over it, but he is assuming there is sin in your life. 00:09:18.480 --> 00:09:21.120 There are ways that you've missed the mark, God, forgive me the way that I also forgive. 00:09:58.000 --> 00:10:00.879 The way that I forgive people, forgive me that way. 00:10:01.279 --> 00:10:07.279 Now, people who are unwilling to forgive people, who hold grudges, like, I'm not forgiving that person. 00:10:07.440 --> 00:10:13.840 People who are unwilling to forgive and have prayed this prayer, forgive me as I forgive those who've sinned against me. 00:10:14.080 --> 00:10:20.879 People who are unwilling to forgive have accidentally prayed for their own condemnation because they're unwilling to forgive. 00:10:21.039 --> 00:10:27.759 And so what they're actually saying is, God, I don't want to forgive people, and so forgive me the way that I forgive others. 00:10:27.840 --> 00:10:30.720 And I don't forgive anybody, that I don't forgive them, which is therefore condemn me, hold me accountable to my sins because I hold them accountable for theirs. 00:11:03.039 --> 00:11:06.240 And so it forces us to search our heart and examine our own hearts. 00:11:06.320 --> 00:11:13.919 And if Jesus' grace has actually reached your heart and transforms you, grace should be something that it then flows from your heart. 00:11:59.200 Not the first thing that we do, not something that we have to go before him and go, like, oh, just I need to come under this thing. 00:11:59.279 --> 00:12:02.159 Like, just here's why we actually need to press into this. 00:12:02.240 --> 00:12:08.480 And I think there's so much goodness in this that I want to actually try and drill out and get out so that you can see. 00:12:08.639 --> 00:12:10.799 But five reasons why Jesus tells us to pray this. 00:12:11.519 --> 00:12:12.159 The first. 00:12:27.039 --> 00:12:38.080 It is super easy for people to love you when you're crushing it, when you're doing good things, everything, everything that I'm doing, they love, and therefore they're loving me really well. 00:12:38.320 --> 00:12:42.159 I'm checking every box, dotting every I, crossing every T. 00:12:42.480 --> 00:12:45.200 Of course, they're love, they're showing love to me. 00:12:45.279 --> 00:12:46.720 I'm doing everything right. 00:12:47.039 --> 00:12:59.840 But you experience, if they actually love you, you experience the depth and the riches of their love, not when you're doing everything right, but when you're actually doing things wrong and they choose to love you anyways. 00:13:00.000 --> 00:13:06.399 How they respond to your wrongdoing actually helps you experience the fullness of the love that they have for you. 00:13:06.559 --> 00:13:07.840 And that's what Jesus is telling. 00:13:08.159 --> 00:13:24.480 Like, I want you to experience the fullness of God's love for you, not just when you're crushing it and doing everything right, but when you failed miserably and you come to him and he has the ability to condemn you if he wants to, but he chooses to forgive you and to embrace you and to actually bring you back into relationship with him. 00:13:24.639 --> 00:13:34.879 He's like, I want you to experience the fullness of his love, and we only really experience that when we've messed up and we have nothing good to offer, and he chooses to love us anyways. 00:13:35.039 --> 00:13:37.440 That's what he wants us to experience from the Father. 00:13:37.679 --> 00:13:45.039 Jesus is not telling us to confess our sins so that we can feel bad, to harp on our wrongdoing, so that he can condemn us or shame us or anything. 00:13:45.200 --> 00:13:49.519 It is like, I want you to do this so that you experience something good, not something terrible. 00:13:49.759 --> 00:13:51.679 And we see what God is like. 00:13:51.759 --> 00:13:55.360 Um, Jesus tells the story of the prodigal son in Luke 15. 00:13:55.600 --> 00:14:02.559 You see, he Jesus is portraying what the what the father is like when someone comes and confesses their sin to him. 00:14:02.799 --> 00:14:05.440 Jesus is telling the story to go, this is what the father is like. 00:14:05.519 --> 00:14:06.480 That's one of his points. 00:14:06.639 --> 00:14:10.799 And so you see what God is actually like when someone confesses in this story. 00:14:10.960 --> 00:14:21.039 And so if you remember that story, the prodigal son basically tells the dad in the story, like, I wish you were dead, give me all your money, or at least my half, and I'm gonna bail out of here and live my own life and do my own thing. 00:14:21.200 --> 00:14:29.519 And so he goes off, sleeps with prostitutes and lots of drinking and parties and all the rest of it, all this stuff, finds himself in a spot that's very difficult. 00:14:29.679 --> 00:14:31.919 He's starving, feels like he's gonna die. 00:14:32.080 --> 00:14:41.519 And the son realizes, like, I think I just need to go home and just tell my dad, I'm sorry, and I can be a servant there, but at least I won't be, you know, starving and stuff like that. 00:14:41.679 --> 00:14:46.480 And so the prodigal son leaves where he is and he begins heading home to his father. 00:14:46.639 --> 00:14:50.080 And this is the experience of the son coming to confess. 00:14:50.320 --> 00:14:51.360 This is what happens. 00:14:51.600 --> 00:14:54.799 It says, he got up, the prodigal son got up and went to his father. 00:14:55.039 --> 00:15:05.519 But it says, but while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion for him, and he ran to his son, threw his arms around his son, and he kissed his son. 00:15:05.679 --> 00:15:10.879 And so what I want you to notice immediately is this happens before the confession. 00:15:11.039 --> 00:15:13.679 The son has not acknowledged anything to the father. 00:15:13.840 --> 00:15:17.600 The son hasn't said anything to the dad about how wrong he's done. 00:15:17.759 --> 00:15:26.639 He he is currently experiencing the affection and love from the father before he's done anything right, before he's confessed and acknowledged anything. 00:15:26.720 --> 00:15:28.639 He's already experiencing that. 00:15:28.799 --> 00:15:47.039 And what Jesus is trying to communicate is even the act of seeking to confess, even before you say the words, the environment that you're stepping into when you're headed towards God to confess something, the environment that you're in is the environment of affection, of love, of incredible compassion. 00:15:47.200 --> 00:15:54.000 Before you even say anything, before you acknowledge anything, you're gonna walk into an environment where he loves you. 00:15:54.399 --> 00:15:58.080 It's not a condemning environment, says, Quick, bring the best robe and put it on him, put a ring on his finger, sandals on his feet, bring the fattened calf and kill it. 00:16:50.559 --> 00:16:51.679 Let's have a feast and celebrate.
