00:04:56.800 --> 00:05:05.040 And so I I didn't know what was happening, and um, and she went over and she I just said, It's okay, we're gonna be okay, you're good, you can go. 00:05:08.160 --> 00:05:10.079 But you like you remember all of it, right? 00:05:10.160 --> 00:05:11.040 Like you remember everything. 00:05:11.199 --> 00:05:36.160 And then um, so that was sweet, and then like my dad, like I'd seen him like get teary-eyed before and that kind of thing, but like this was a moment where like I remember like the like the shrill shriek, like something came out of him, like watching his dad pass away, and like knowing like that he can't uh, you know, he's not gonna be able to see his dad in this life anymore. 00:05:36.319 --> 00:05:46.560 And it was just this thing, this guttural thing that like I don't even think he knew was gonna escape his body or whatever, but it was it was just true sadness, like something that was expressed. 00:05:46.639 --> 00:05:53.680 And I so it was this this moment of watching someone die that just shaped, I can rem I can remember what he looked like in his face. 00:05:53.839 --> 00:06:08.800 I can remember just watching these things, and and we have so many memories of uh or so many times where you don't remember anything about the rooms that you're sitting in, but like for some reason, in the presence with someone dying, it just it just shapes you, it marks you. 00:06:08.879 --> 00:06:12.240 You remember every single, or for me at least, I remembered every single thing about it. 00:06:12.399 --> 00:06:20.879 And I say that because in this scene in the death of Jesus, I think the same thing happens to this centurion. 00:06:21.120 --> 00:06:23.439 Like he just he watches this man die. 00:06:23.600 --> 00:06:25.360 And he's he's he's his murderer. 00:06:25.439 --> 00:06:35.120 He's probably one of the guys that abused him and tortured him before, walked him all the way out to the cross, and then has just been with Jesus the entire time and just watching him die. 00:06:35.360 --> 00:06:40.000 And at the end of Jesus' life, he looks up and something happens. 00:06:40.079 --> 00:06:48.480 He says, When it when I saw, when it I think it says when it saw the way that he died, he says, Surely this man was a son of God. 00:06:48.639 --> 00:07:02.399 I was like, there's just something about being marked by this moment and just seeing this text that we read, but seeing the actual image, seeing the actual visual picture of this thing, it shaped him and it marked him, and it it changed him. 00:07:02.560 --> 00:07:08.240 He went from uh centurions, Roman centurions are only supposed to call the Son of God Caesar. 00:07:08.480 --> 00:07:09.839 Caesar is the son of the divine. 00:07:10.079 --> 00:07:12.000 That's the only time they're ever supposed to use that. 00:07:12.160 --> 00:07:20.000 And for some reason, this centurion sees Jesus die, and he changes his allegiance from a Roman Caesar to a Jewish Jesus, this rabbi. 00:07:20.160 --> 00:07:26.079 And so he has this marked moment, this shift, this change that happens in his life just by watching Jesus die. 00:07:26.160 --> 00:07:40.319 And so, what I want to do today is I want to do my best to try and look at how Jesus dies, things that are happening in this moment as Jesus dies, so that something similar can just be reawakened in us. 00:07:40.480 --> 00:07:46.480 That some of us will actually have this change of heart and this change of thinking and this change of our mind. 00:07:46.959 --> 00:07:50.000 The centurion changes his thoughts on who Jesus actually is. 00:07:50.079 --> 00:07:53.839 He thinks he's a criminal, and all of a sudden, at the very end, is like, this is the Son of God. 00:07:54.000 --> 00:07:55.040 Surely it was. 00:07:55.279 --> 00:08:03.839 And so I want to look at this so that hopefully we we get to a space where it actually marks us, it actually shapes us, and something has changed or deepened in us as well. 00:08:03.920 --> 00:08:05.040 And so that's what I want to do today. 00:08:05.199 --> 00:08:10.720 Three things that we see in the death of Jesus, and I want to draw out some application of what those things can mean for us. 00:08:10.879 --> 00:08:19.839 Okay, so the first in the death of Jesus, one of the things that we see is that God is demonstrating his love for us. 00:08:20.319 --> 00:08:23.439 God is just demonstrating his love for us in the death of Jesus. 00:08:23.600 --> 00:08:28.560 In this passage, you see the type of people that Jesus is dying for. 00:08:28.720 --> 00:08:30.480 And none of them are great, right? 00:08:30.639 --> 00:08:31.439 They're all bad. 00:08:31.600 --> 00:08:47.120 And so, verses 16 through 32, I'm not going to read them again, but basically, here's who he's dying for: people who abuse him, people who torture him, people who mock him, liars, slanderers, rebels, thieves, hypocrites, those who are envious and jealous of him. 00:08:47.600 --> 00:08:50.799 He dies for unbelievers, and he even dies for his murderers. 00:08:51.120 --> 00:08:58.320 Jesus is dying for people, and he's really just, it's what it's revealing is he is dying for ungodly people. 00:08:58.480 --> 00:09:05.919 He is not dying for anybody that really is like cheering him on, going, go, Jesus, go! It's gonna, you know, that no one's doing that. 00:09:06.159 --> 00:09:12.000 He's dying for these horrible, horrific people with evil intent inside their hearts. 00:09:12.080 --> 00:09:13.519 That is who he's dying for. 00:09:13.679 --> 00:09:24.799 And what Paul says about what Jesus does in this moment is he says that this thing that he's doing, in this way, God is demonstrating his love for us. 00:09:25.039 --> 00:09:26.320 He says this in Romans 5. 00:09:26.399 --> 00:09:29.840 He says, Christ died for the ungodly. 00:09:29.919 --> 00:09:31.679 And we see them in this text. 00:09:31.840 --> 00:09:33.360 Christ died for the ungodly. 00:09:33.519 --> 00:09:38.320 Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous person, though for a good person someone might dare to die. 00:09:38.559 --> 00:09:44.080 But God demonstrates his love for us in this, that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. 00:09:44.639 --> 00:09:51.519 And so what we're seeing in this passage is God is demonstrating his love for people, even love for the murderers of his own son. 00:09:51.840 --> 00:09:53.759 He is demonstrating his love for us. 00:09:53.919 --> 00:09:57.440 And Jesus says that no greater, there's no greater love than to lay down your life. 00:09:57.519 --> 00:09:59.120 He says this in John 15. 00:09:59.360 --> 00:10:04.159 There's no greater love, no greater love than this, than to lay one's life down for one's friend. 00:10:04.320 --> 00:10:08.399 And Jesus isn't even doing it necessarily for his friend, even though he's called the friend of sinners. 00:10:08.480 --> 00:10:10.960 He is doing this for the ungodly. 00:10:11.039 --> 00:10:15.120 He's doing this for people who do not call him friend, and he is laying down his life. 00:10:15.360 --> 00:10:27.360 And so, in this scene, what you see in this passage is God is demonstrating the greatest love ever shown, and he's demonstrating that to the ungodly, he's demonstrating that to people who don't deserve it. 00:10:27.600 --> 00:10:44.240 And so, what this means for us, what it what it should mean for us, is that in God demonstrating his love for us, what this should mean for us is it should tell us that like you do not have to do anything, any work to get God to love you. 00:10:44.480 --> 00:10:51.519 There's not like something that he's waiting for in order to get you, get him to go, like, okay, now I will love you. 00:10:51.759 --> 00:10:54.399 We don't have to do any work to get God to love us. 00:10:54.639 --> 00:10:56.000 We don't have to do anything like that. 00:10:56.159 --> demonstrates his love for us that while we were ungodly, he died for us. 00:11:37.360 --> 00:11:38.960 He already loves you. 00:11:40.000 --> 00:11:56.559 I think one of the greatest deceptions that Satan, that the enemy has poured into our minds as Christians and just as people, really, is this being deceived into thinking that God doesn't actually love us. 00:11:57.679 --> 00:12:02.080 Or that it's just hard to get him to love us, that he's like begrudgingly forgiving our sins. 00:12:02.159 --> 00:12:05.679 Like, I don't really want to, but I guess I have to because Jesus did that thing on the cross. 00:12:05.919 --> 00:12:08.799 Like, like you have to, like when we pray, you're like, God, please help. 00:12:08.879 --> 00:12:21.919 And we we we can kind of get this feeling of like that we have to get his attention to like aim at our situation and then try and explain, like, seriously, I need your help because this is really messed up, and let me give you 30 reasons why I need you to actually break in and do something. 00:12:22.159 --> 00:12:31.519 And I think there's just this thing in us that exists where we're like, we just struggle to believe that he actually feels affection how do you, uh how do you deal with the differences between the angry God of the Old Testament and the Jesus that we see in the New Testament? 00:12:46.320 --> 00:12:48.480 I'm like, man, it even shows up in that question. 00:12:48.639 --> 00:12:51.759 Like, certainly these two people are different. 00:12:52.000 --> 00:12:56.320 And it's like, but Jesus says, I'm revealing to you what the Father is actually like. 00:12:56.480 --> 00:13:02.240 And you have to see it, and what Paul is saying is like, it is God who is doing something in the midst of it. 00:13:03.120 --> 00:13:06.720 Jesus is being used for this thing and he's obedient to the Father in this thing. 00:13:06.879 --> 00:13:10.559 But Paul says it is God who is demonstrating his love for you. 00:13:10.799 --> 00:13:19.600 The God of the Old Testament is demonstrating his love for you, not to crush and condemn sinners, but he's demonstrating his love for you that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. it can be so rote and so thing, like I love you, we say I love you a billion times, and so God loves you is like, yeah, yeah, yeah, you see it on billboards and all this different stuff. 00:13:37.279 --> 00:13:47.840 But like, there is something here that we really do need to fundamentally grasp in our hearts that like you are deeply loved by a God that does not base it on your behavior. a sacrificial love, one that's willing to give my only son, I love you so much, to bring you back to me. 00:14:03.120 --> 00:14:11.360 We have to figure out how that, how to make that not become If you've ever seen, uh if you've ever adopted an abused dog, um, I don't want the dog that I have, but um uh if you ever do that, normally what happens is uh the dog struggles to trust you, right? 00:14:27.919 --> 00:14:29.039 Like it takes a minute. 00:14:29.200 --> 00:14:36.799 And even when you're trying to be so kind to it and so gracious to it, you're trying to love it, and you're trying to show it that it's safe with you, like it will not trust you. 00:14:36.960 --> 00:14:46.399 And it just takes time and time and time and time to where the dog finally is able to fall into and rest into, okay, I think these people are safe. 00:14:46.559 --> 00:14:48.159 I think they actually love me. 00:14:48.559 --> 00:14:57.200 And something fundamentally changes inside their behavior, and I think there's something or inside their lives of like, okay, I believe I can live in the reality. 00:14:57.360 --> 00:14:59.840 I do not have to be scared anymore. 00:15:00.000 --> 00:15:08.159 We have to figure out how to actually bring this love that God has for us, bring it into our lives so that it has expression into our hearts so that it shapes the way that we live. 00:15:08.399 --> They actually end up hurting themselves. 00:15:33.039 --> 00:15:44.080 Like that, like that's the when they begin questioning, I don't think he actually loves me as much as he says he does, I don't think he actually loves me and he's leading me in good spaces, they end up, everybody ends up hurting themselves. 00:15:44.159 --> 00:15:51.440 And so, case in point in Genesis, the serpent basically tells Adam and Eve, God doesn't love you, he's holding out on you, and they believe it. 00:15:51.679 --> 00:15:52.799 God's holding out on us. 00:15:52.879 --> 00:15:54.480 He doesn't love us, he's holding out on us. 00:15:54.559 --> 00:16:04.559 And so they take the fruit and they eat, and it's like, you just harmed yourself because you fundamentally did not fully grasp and believe that he actually loved you, that he would not hold out on you. 00:16:04.799 --> 00:16:08.399 He loves you enough to give, to create you, like he is not holding out on you. 00:16:08.639 --> 00:16:12.799 But 00:16:23.600 --> 00:16:31.360 It's gonna be this amazing thing, and you're gonna see incredible stuff, and I'm gonna bless you with all this land that you're gonna love, and I'm gonna fight for you and protect you, I'm gonna do all this stuff. 00:16:31.440 --> 00:16:41.039 And it says that they send some spies in and come back out, and that basically what they say is like, no, God didn't bring us here to give us this land, he brought us here to kill us. 00:16:41.200 --> 00:16:46.159 And they start telling the Israelite community, God has brought us out of Egypt to kill us here. 00:16:46.399 --> 00:16:54.639 He does not want to bless us, he does not love us, he's our murderer, he's come here, he's an assassin used by somebody to get us out here, and now he's gonna kill us. 00:16:54.799 --> 00:17:03.440 And it says that they decided because they did not believe that God loved them, that they believed actually he's gonna kill us, they decided not to go in the land. 00:17:03.600 -->
