Rainey and I, one of the first things that we did was begin giving money to retirement, an organization here in Memphis. 00:03:48.319 --> 00:03:52.319 And uh it was really hard for me because I was only 28 and I wasn't looking to retire. 00:03:52.400 --> 00:03:55.120 I was actually just looking to actually try and begin a career. 00:03:55.199 --> 00:04:02.639 Uh and to me, giving money to retirement felt like this is only this money is not gonna help me here and now. 00:04:02.719 --> 00:04:11.680 It's gonna be something that helps me later, and this practice of giving money to retirement is just gonna be something that's beneficial for me in the future and gonna do nothing for me right now. 00:04:11.840 --> 00:04:13.199 And so that was hard for me. 00:04:13.439 --> 00:04:21.920 But as we began to do it, I realized that the benefits of doing this thing and giving this money for the future was actually affecting our day-to-day lives. 00:04:22.079 --> 00:04:36.560 So, for example, uh giving money to retirement every month caused Rainey and me to have to be more disciplined in all of our money because we had to keep up with it and we had to make sure that we kept doing it, and so we watched our finances more closely, which was actually really good. 00:04:36.720 --> 00:04:38.399 If you don't watch them, you'll overspend. 00:04:38.639 --> 00:04:42.800 Uh, and I have a serious habit of overspending, and so that was helpful. 00:04:42.959 --> 00:04:55.519 Uh, it made us be more disciplined in paying off the student debts that I had, and so we instead of being in debt for the next 50 years, we got out of debt in five years because we were able to kind of see the money coming in and seeing how we could allocate it in different spaces. 00:04:55.600 --> 00:05:03.519 Uh, it caused us to save more money in our normal budget than we normally would because we saw what our expenses actually were and we were able to save. 00:05:03.759 --> 00:05:12.079 Um, making unwise decisions, and then she gave us uh mostly Rainey, gave Rainey peace when we did have to make a financial decision and made her feel like, hey, even though you're gonna spend a lot of money here, you'll still be able to meet your goals in the future. 00:05:34.639 --> 00:05:40.000 And so not only did she give us discipline and keep us in wisdom, but she also helped us receive some peace. 00:05:40.160 --> 00:05:54.240 And then it just gave us freedom to talk with her to buy things that we wanted or that we needed, and it made sure that when the years showed up down the way, we had enough money in certain spaces in order to meet our everyday needs and do those types of things. 00:05:54.319 --> 00:06:02.720 And again, I thought that giving money to retirement would only benefit my future, and it actually had an effect on my day-to-day life, and it still does that today. 00:06:02.800 --> 00:06:08.160 And I say that because I believe that faith works the exact same that they actually need. 00:07:02.160 --> 00:07:10.879 But the truth is, like if you look at these two people, if you look at Jaris' life and this woman, practicing faith in Jesus didn't help them get into heaven. 00:07:11.120 --> 00:07:16.959 Practicing faith in Jesus in this moment helped them in their everyday, day-to-day life. 00:07:17.120 --> 00:07:18.560 It helped with a social situation. 00:07:18.720 --> 00:07:19.839 This woman was an outcast. 00:07:20.000 --> 00:07:21.839 Practicing faith in Jesus fixed that for her. 00:07:22.000 --> 00:07:24.399 It helped in a health situation, a day-to-day experience. 00:07:24.480 --> 00:07:25.600 We all deal with health issues. 00:07:25.759 --> 00:07:27.759 Practicing faith in Jesus helped one that way. 00:07:27.920 --> 00:07:30.480 Practicing faith in Jesus helped a family situation. 00:07:30.720 --> 00:07:36.639 It humbled a man, a synagogue leader named Jiris, who was filled with pride, and now he's stooping at the feet of Jesus. 00:07:36.720 --> 00:07:39.199 So it made a prideful man, a humble man. 00:07:39.279 --> 00:07:47.279 And so you see this thing where practicing faith wasn't just this thing that was like, I applications and practical implications for our life here and now, and it happened for them and it's true for us as well. 00:07:56.959 --> 00:08:01.839 Practicing faith in Jesus isn't something that's into a space by Jesus where we invite him into the day-to-day things in our lives, where we experience his power, his presence, and his care and help here and now. 00:08:15.040 --> 00:08:20.480 And so this idea that, like, I don't need a I don't need a sermon on how to practice faith in Jesus, I need something to help with my marriage. 00:08:20.639 --> 00:08:24.319 If you began practicing faith in Jesus, your marriage would receive the benefit of that. 00:08:24.480 --> 00:08:29.759 If you began practicing faith in Jesus, you would learn how to actually respond to your children who are Jesus because when you do, when you give him more of your life, he then takes it and uses it and works in it in all these different spaces. 00:08:46.320 --> 00:08:51.519 And so we're gonna look at once again this passage, looking at it from a different perspective. 00:08:51.759 --> 00:08:55.039 We're gonna look at this idea of what it looks like to actually practice faith. 00:08:55.279 --> 00:09:00.000 Last week we looked at this exact same story, but we focused on the woman. 00:09:00.080 --> 00:09:03.120 And we noticed three things about this woman's faith. 00:09:03.279 --> 00:09:13.759 The first thing that we noticed was what faith actually is, and it was, go to the next slide here, what faith actually is, is it's not simply believing something, but it's actually putting that belief into action. 00:09:13.919 --> 00:09:14.720 What is faith? 00:09:14.879 --> 00:09:17.600 It is not simply believing something, it is putting that faith into action. 00:09:17.759 --> 00:09:22.240 Believing that Jesus could heal her did nothing until she took that belief and put it into her life. 00:09:22.480 --> 00:09:29.440 The second thing we saw last week was that the type of faith that Jesus works powerfully through, that Jesus works through any faith we got. 00:09:29.679 --> 00:09:32.879 You got any faith in him, he will work powerfully through that faith. 00:09:33.039 --> 00:09:38.000 And we saw that in her faith was riddled with issues, riddled with superstition and all these different things. 00:09:38.080 --> 00:09:41.440 And yet Jesus worked powerfully through any faith that leads us to him. 00:09:41.759 --> 00:09:44.639 And then the third thing that we saw was that the outcome of faith. 00:09:44.960 --> 00:09:52.320 The outcome of faith is that faith in Jesus will always, without fail, it will always make a difference, and it will always do more than we think. 00:09:52.399 --> 00:09:53.840 And we saw that in her life. 00:09:54.080 --> 00:10:05.360 And so, what I want to do today is I want to look at the things that we found last week and then apply them to Jairus' life and see if they're also true, universally true in his life and the expression of it. 00:10:05.519 --> 00:10:10.879 And then I want to give you three very practical applications of like, here's what we should do based on these things. 00:10:10.960 --> 00:10:11.279 Okay? 00:10:11.600 --> 00:10:16.720 So I want to look at how we see these things in Jairus' life and then what it should do in our lives. 00:10:16.960 --> 00:10:23.840 So the first thing we saw about faith last week was that faith is not simply belief, but belief put into action. 00:10:24.000 --> 00:10:26.960 Again, you saw this in the woman's life, you see it in Jairus' life. 00:10:27.120 --> 00:10:32.080 Starting in verse uh 22, it says Jairus came when he saw Jesus and he fell at his feet. 00:10:32.240 --> 00:10:34.799 And he pleaded earnestly with him, My little daughter is dying. 00:10:34.879 --> 00:10:38.480 Please come and put your hands on her so that she may be healed and live. 00:10:38.559 --> 00:10:40.399 So you see his belief right there. 00:10:40.639 --> 00:10:44.320 I believe that if you will come and put your hands on her, she will be healed. 00:10:44.399 --> 00:10:47.519 There's the belief, but that's doing nothing for his daughter at this moment. 00:10:47.679 --> 00:10:49.440 It's not, she's still not healed. 00:10:49.519 --> 00:10:50.960 She's still very, very sick. 00:10:51.200 --> 00:10:58.799 And then it says, So Jesus went with him, believing that Jesus could heal his daughter, didn't change his experience, it didn't change his daughter's experience. 00:10:58.960 --> 00:11:06.240 It wasn't until they actually took that belief, shoved it into his life, into his legs, and they began walking to the house where Jairus was. 00:11:06.480 --> 00:11:12.480 And then you see as they're going along that other people are like, hey, she's no longer notice what Jesus does. 00:11:17.679 --> 00:11:20.960 Jesus, he says, ignoring what they said, which I actually really love. 00:11:21.039 --> 00:11:22.960 If Jesus ignores something, you can too. 00:11:23.519 --> 00:11:29.039 But ignoring what they say, what he says to him, he's like, Don't be afraid. 00:11:29.279 --> 00:11:31.120 Don't be afraid, just believe. 00:11:31.360 --> 00:11:41.039 And that word believe, go to the next slide here, that word believe is the verb form of, it's pistuo, that's the verb form of pistis, which is faith. 00:11:41.200 --> 00:11:45.919 And so what Jesus is And Jesus is trying to get him to avoid what I think many Christians fall into, is this right here hearing something, believing something, and not acting, which leads to a dead faith or it leads to believes, she has faith that, like, all I gotta do is touch his clothes. 00:13:51.679 --> 00:13:53.840 He's so powerful, all I gotta do is touch his clothes. 00:13:54.000 --> 00:13:59.200 The man's like, no, he's gotta come to the house, lay his hands on a thing, and do this whole thing. 00:13:59.360 --> 00:14:01.919 The woman has more faith in the power of Jesus. 00:14:02.080 --> 00:14:09.840 And then if you remember in Matthew 8, uh there's a Roman centurion that he's got greater faith in all of them, the Roman guy. 00:14:10.000 --> 00:14:13.679 He he says, uh, you don't even need to come to my house. 00:14:13.759 --> 00:14:15.919 You don't need to lay your hands on anybody, anything like that. 00:14:16.080 --> 00:14:17.200 Just say the word. 00:14:17.360 --> 00:14:21.039 Just speak the word out into the world, and my servant will be healed. 00:14:21.120 --> 00:14:23.039 And Jesus says, I've never seen faith like this. 00:14:23.200 --> 00:14:24.559 What an incredible faith. 00:14:24.720 --> 00:14:27.840 So he's got very strong faith, and Jairus has a very weak faith. 00:14:28.000 --> 00:14:31.440 And yet, Jesus goes with him and does an amazing thing. 00:14:31.679 --> 00:14:31.919 Dr. 00:14:32.000 --> 00:14:34.960 Carson, one of my seminary professors, said this. 00:14:35.279 --> 00:14:46.000 He said, The synagogue ruler felt Jesus, Jesus' touch had special power, but his faith was not as great as that of the centurion, who believed that Jesus could heal by his word. 00:14:46.320 --> 00:14:51.519 Still, Jesus did not refuse this man, but responded to faith, small or great. 00:14:51.840 --> 00:14:58.960 Jesus still did a mighty, powerful thing through Jairus' faith, even though Jairus' faith was super, super weak. 00:14:59.120 --> 00:15:11.840 Even though there was a lot of doubts, there was a little bit of fear, don't have that much belief that you can do as much as other people do, Jesus still responded with strength because the strength of our faith faith leads you, you experience from that what the person has in them. 00:16:12.000 --> 00:16:18.960 And so Jesus has immeasurable power, something that cannot be contained, and something that nobody can understand. 00:16:19.120 --> 00:16:26.720 And so when any faith, small or great, teeny tiny faith, leads you to someone who is very, very strong, you will experience something very, very strong.
