people and Gentile people, primarily in Rome, that Jesus is good because they wanted to take the gospel to the ends of the world, and the ends of the world to them was Rome. 00:00:17.679 --> 00:00:46.320 He said, Be clean. 00:00:46.640 --> 00:00:49.600 And immediately the leprosy left him and he was cleansed. 00:00:49.920 --> 00:00:52.240 And Jesus sent him away at once with a strong newspaper editor, Arthur Brisbane, coined the phrase that you've probably heard, a picture is worth a thousand words. 00:01:29.439 --> 00:01:41.359 And I really like that idea because I do think that a picture of someone or a situation can explain quite a bit about things that are going on that maybe behind the scenes you don't see. 00:01:41.519 --> 00:01:46.799 So for instance, uh this is a 00:02:04.159 Like I just hug me, do that thing. 00:02:04.319 --> 00:02:08.319 But if you look very closely, there's two pieces of candy in his hands that have wrappers on them. 00:02:08.560 --> 00:02:13.039 And he's like, I understand that you want a hug, but uh I'll give you a hug if you open. 00:02:13.360 --> 00:02:14.479 He's not trying to hug me. 00:02:14.560 --> 00:02:18.479 He is saying, if you open these, you can have the hug. 00:02:18.560 --> 00:02:21.680 This is just straight up bribery, and honestly, it's the story of my life. 00:02:21.840 --> 00:02:25.120 I want him to hug me, and he really just wants candy. 00:02:25.360 --> 00:02:27.439 Um, that's pretty much how it goes. 00:02:27.599 --> 00:02:48.960 But I say all that because I genuinely think that this text that we just read offers a picture of Jesus that reveals so much about who he is, and to dig into the text and the picture of what's happening in this particular story really digs down into what he wants to do and what he wants to do for us, what he has come to do. 00:02:49.120 --> 00:02:50.879 So all of these things take shape. 00:02:50.960 --> 00:02:58.159 And to me, it's the best picture of Jesus in the gospels, other than the crucifixion itself, which is more outright and forthright about what he's come to do. 00:02:58.319 --> 00:03:01.919 But this particular picture to me shares so much about what he's like. 00:03:02.080 --> 00:03:08.800 So, what I want to do today is look at three things that Jesus does in this picture of him, of this story of him. 00:03:09.039 --> 00:03:12.479 Um, and then here's what he does, and here's what that teaches us. 00:03:12.639 --> 00:03:13.599 And so that's what I want to do. 00:03:13.759 --> 00:03:15.919 Three things he does that teaches us something. 00:03:16.080 --> 00:03:19.840 The first is we see that Jesus welcomes sinners. 00:03:20.000 --> 00:03:23.039 The first thing he does is he welcomes the sinner. 00:03:23.280 --> 00:03:29.199 So in verse 40, it says, a man with leprosy came to him and begged him on his knees. 00:03:29.520 --> 00:03:31.520 Which sounds like this is great. 00:03:32.080 --> 00:03:35.039 A lot of people do this, but this man was not supposed to do this. 00:03:35.199 --> 00:03:38.159 He wasn't somebody breaking the law of Moses by doing this. 00:03:38.319 --> 00:03:42.800 According to the law of Moses in Leviticus 13, this is what a leper is supposed to do. 00:03:42.960 --> 00:03:57.599 The leper who has the disease, maybe we don't have this quote, the leper who has the disease shall wear uh shall wear torn clothes, let their hair of his head hang loose, and he shall cover his upper lip and cry out, unclean, unclean. 00:03:57.759 --> 00:04:06.960 He shall remain unclean as long as he has the disease, and is as long as he is unclean, he shall dwell outside alone in a habitation without a camp. 00:04:07.120 --> 00:04:18.879 And so for this man to step forward into this space and actually run up to Jesus and not just get a little close, to be, we know he's close enough for touching distance because Jesus is that is able to touch him. 00:04:19.040 --> 00:04:24.160 This man is sinning against the law of Moses by coming to Jesus in this particular way. 00:04:24.399 --> 00:04:25.920 Now that's just what he did. 00:04:26.160 --> 00:04:30.000 What people were supposed to do to stay away from this man was pretty significant. 00:04:30.079 --> 00:04:32.000 You can go to that quote that you brought up. 00:04:32.240 --> 00:04:34.240 This is what people were supposed to do if they saw a leper. 00:04:34.319 --> 00:04:39.120 According to the Jewish law and customs, one had to keep six feet from a leper, just outside of touching distance. 00:04:39.360 --> 00:04:43.279 If the wind blew towards a person from a leper, you had to keep 150 feet away. 00:04:43.439 --> 00:04:47.839 The only thing more defiling than contact with a leper was contact with a dead body. 00:04:48.079 --> 00:04:54.959 And then commentator David McKenna says that people avoided not only contact with the body of a leper, but also the shadow of lepers. 00:04:55.120 --> 00:05:00.240 And so if the shadow of a leper was coming in their way, they would avoid contact even with the shadow. 00:05:00.480 --> 00:05:04.399 And so it wasn't, I mean, this is a unique situation that's happening here. 00:05:04.560 --> 00:05:14.160 And then to add on to it, Jesus is a holy man, he's a rabbi, and David Goodzik goes on to talk about how rabbis treated lepers, and it was pretty intense the way that they treated them. 00:05:14.240 --> 00:05:15.120 This is what he says. 00:05:15.360 --> 00:05:22.160 Rabbis especially despised lepers, saw them as those under special judgment of God, not just regular judgment of God. 00:05:22.319 --> 00:05:27.360 You have a unique judgment of God placed on your life, deserving no pity, no mercy. 00:05:27.600 --> 00:05:30.160 Back then, they thought two things about a leper. 00:05:30.399 --> 00:05:35.519 You are the walking dead, and you deserve this because this is a punishment of God against you. 00:05:35.759 --> 00:05:38.639 Jewish custom said that you should not even greet a leper. 00:05:38.800 --> 00:05:46.800 One rabbi bragged that he would not even buy food on a street where he saw a leper, and another boasted that he threw rocks at lepers to keep them far from him. 00:05:46.959 --> 00:05:54.319 And what's so beautiful about what Jesus does is he does none of it, he's a rabbi, and he does none of those things because Jesus welcomes sinners. 00:05:54.480 --> 00:05:57.680 He lets them get close enough to touch him, he listens to him. 00:05:58.079 --> 00:06:07.439 He's filled with, it says that he's indignant, what what it's what Mark calls this Greek term splunknesomai, which is like this angry compassion. 00:06:07.600 --> 00:06:11.920 And so it's like he's indignant and mad, but he's filled with compassion at the same time. 00:06:12.000 --> 00:06:18.959 So Matthew and Luke, when they're telling this story, they would say that Jesus was filled with compassion to not confuse anybody. 00:06:19.600 --> 00:06:21.600 He's filled with compassion towards this leper. 00:06:21.759 --> 00:06:24.480 But Mark wants everybody to know, but he's also angry. 00:06:24.639 --> 00:06:30.079 There's something in him that's angry, and he's angry at what this disease has ripped from his life and done to his life. 00:06:30.240 --> 00:06:33.759 And so he's filled with anger and compassion towards this man. 00:06:33.839 --> 00:06:35.279 And then he's willing to help him. 00:06:35.360 --> 00:06:38.399 He even reaches out and touches the man, which we know he doesn't have to do. 00:06:38.560 --> 00:06:42.560 He heals lepers in other spaces where he just speaks the word and they're healed. 00:06:42.720 --> 00:06:52.399 And yet he heals this man by touching him, and he probably hasn't been touched in years, and so this show of compassion to feel a human touch again in years, like he's just constantly nice to him. 00:06:52.480 --> 00:07:01.600 And he does this, even though this man is breaking, literally right now, he is sinning and breaking the Mosaic law and should be condemned and that kind of thing for doing all these wrong things. 00:07:01.759 --> 00:07:07.199 Jesus doesn't do that, he welcomes him because Jesus welcomes sinners into his life. 00:07:07.519 --> 00:07:16.079 So, for us, this teaches us so many things, or at least it should teach us a lot of things about Jesus, that Jesus welcomes sinners. 00:07:16.319 through the words and the things that people do and the things, what they post on their social media, let me sniff for some sin, tell them, like, hey, I love you in Jesus' name, but you're honestly you're really a bad person. 00:09:49.600 --> 00:09:57.279 That's the and it it's it's almost like God will like we're failing him if we don't, if we just love somebody but don't call out their sin. 00:14:39.360 Because the cross and my whole faith is based on someone lovingly disagreeing with me and choosing to give his life for my sake to draw me near. 00:14:39.519 --> 00:14:43.919 And this is why Mark is proclaiming that Jesus is good, because he welcomes sinners. 00:14:44.080 --> 00:14:46.000 And no one else really does that. 00:14:46.480 --> 00:14:47.679 Jesus welcomes sinners. get bigger and turn to white with a shiny and scaly appearance. 00:15:32.559 --> 00:15:38.080 The spots soon spread over the body and hair begins to fall out, first from the head, then from the eyebrows. 00:15:38.240 --> 00:15:42.879 As things get worse, fingernails and toenails become loose, they start to rot and eventually fall off. 00:15:43.039 --> 00:15:46.720 Then the joints of fingers reason I thought that was important because in Luke 5, when he when Luke tells this story, and Luke's a doctor and a lawyer, when he tells a story, he says the man is filled with leprosy. 00:16:51.039 --> 00:16:56.159 And so the idea is the man doesn't just have the starting point of leprosy with some red spots. 00:16:56.240 --> 00:16:59.759 If you watch the chosen, which I love, I was just talking the reason this is important for us is because people at this time, during this, while this is written, they believed and viewed leprosy's effects on the body the same as sin's effects on the life.
