who foretold of Jesus' birth centuries before he was born, and I'll just read a short snippet of what Alex said. 00:02:25.520 --> 00:02:30.879 He said, For a child is born to us, a son is given to us. I said a few minutes ago, every year we try to find a unique theme so that Christmas stays fresh. 00:02:47.439 --> 00:02:49.039 And the way that usually looks is really simple. 00:02:49.280 --> 00:02:57.680 A group of us in September get together and we meet and we pray and we brainstorm and we trust that God will give us an idea and we'll come out of it and we'll go, here's what we're gonna talk about this year. 00:02:57.840 --> 00:03:02.560 And it was really clear to us back in September that the theme was going to be peace, and that became Prince of Peace. 00:03:02.639 --> 00:03:09.280 it went from being something that was like a thought to an urgent crisis decision, very high stakes, at least in my mind, very high stress, and to be honest, I didn't handle that stress in the best way. 00:04:26.480 --> 00:04:40.160 I made this big financial decision, and when I made it for my family, I had a lot of peace about it, and then I had less peace after I made it, and then I had like no peace two weeks later, and I had regret, and I drove my wife and three or four of my friends absolutely nuts. 00:04:40.319 --> 00:04:44.079 And I have peace again, but that's been a roller coaster that hasn't been fun to ride. 00:04:44.319 --> 00:04:52.319 I had this weird medical thing where I just three weeks ago passed out, totally lost consciousness, got to go to the ER for a day. all that to say that this whole theme of peace and Jesus being the Prince of Peace is one that has moved really quickly for me from being this sort of general theme, Christmassy theme, to a very deeply personal experience, more so than I can remember at any time I've ever given a Christmas message in the decade or so I've been I've been doing this. 00:06:20.639 --> 00:06:30.079 So I've been on this sort of journey for the last few weeks to understand peace differently and experience it, because I gotta talk about it now and I haven't felt like I've had it. 00:06:30.160 --> 00:06:31.839 It's something that Jesus promises. 00:06:32.079 --> 00:06:36.879 Like he told his followers in John chapter 14, I am leaving you with a gift. 00:06:38.079 --> 00:06:44.720 Peace of mind and heart, and the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give, so do not be troubled or afraid. 00:06:44.800 --> 00:06:57.759 I've spent a good bit of the last few weeks, either troubled or afraid, if I'm being honest, struggling to experience this peace that Jesus promises and that I'm supposed to talk about. 00:06:57.920 --> 00:07:08.879 But that's one of the beautiful things about following Jesus is he often shows up and shows you things that you didn't know you needed in times that you feel like you're the most desperate. 00:07:09.519 --> 00:07:11.920 And so turns out this is an ancient dilemma. 00:07:12.000 --> 00:07:18.480 This whole quest for peace, this is something that people have struggled with forever because turns out the world has been crazy forever. 00:07:18.879 --> 00:07:21.439 00:07:32.000 --> 00:07:42.319 And so as I was researching and praying and studying and honestly just desperately trying to find some more peace for myself, I found something really ancient that wow, I'm really glad I was there, and and that was helpful, or it'll be a huge waste of time. 00:07:51.519 --> 00:08:00.639 But the good news is the Christmas message is always shorter, so it'll be less of a waste of time than if you were here on a normal Sunday and I talked about something that was boring and whatever. 00:08:00.720 --> 00:08:01.680 Alright, here's here's what I found. very old. 00:08:08.079 --> 00:08:19.439 The earliest images like this show up in our in our faith's history about 1200, so about a thousand years old, and it's something that is called the rota fortuna, which is Latin for the wheel of fortune. 00:08:20.639 --> 00:08:23.680 It's actually a little bit more ancient than even that. 00:08:24.240 --> 00:08:42.879 A lot of times what happens in the history of our faith is that ancient cultures had ways of understanding the world and making sense of life, and then they would hear the message of Jesus and they would give their lives to Jesus, and the whole culture would be overtaken by this passion for Jesus, and sometimes they would just sort of like like stamp Jesus on top of the stuff they already had. 00:08:43.039 --> 00:08:45.039 And that's this is kind of one of those things. 00:08:45.279 --> 00:08:57.519 The Greeks and the Romans had this mythology about a goddess called Fortuna, and she's the goddess of fate, and they understood life to be that she just sort of spins a wheel, and that's what determines how your life goes on any given day. 00:08:58.639 --> 00:09:04.960 Some of that stuff is silly and stupid, and sometimes it's like they're close, they've discerned some truths, they just didn't have the name right. 00:09:05.200 --> 00:09:08.799 Jesus kind of shows up and gives us the right name and helps us 00:11:58.799 It's one of these devices where children climb on it, but then there's this device in the middle of it that a larger child can spin really fast, and that determines how fast the wheel heaven, he was born as a person, he didn't skip any of the hard stuff, and he experienced every aspect of life that we experienced. 00:13:28.320 --> 00:13:31.039 He's been in all of those places on the wheel. 00:13:31.200 --> 00:13:33.519 Jesus knows what it feels like to be on the up and up. 00:13:34.000 --> 00:13:44.320 There was a time when he was teaching and preaching and doing miracles, and people thought he was awesome, and his popularity was growing, and everywhere that he went, he was like a rock star, and people were following him, and his name was famous. 00:13:44.480 --> 00:13:46.480 He knows what that feels like to be on the rise. 00:13:46.639 --> 00:13:49.200 Jesus knows what it feels like to be at the very top. 00:13:49.440 --> 00:13:58.720 There's a famous story of him entering this city, Jerusalem, and everyone cheers for him, and they they shout to him, and they're calling him a king and a savior. 00:13:59.759 --> 00:14:02.080 Jesus knows what it feels like to be on the way down. 00:14:02.240 --> 00:14:07.360 Not long after that, he was betrayed and abandoned by his closest friends and handed over to his enemies. 00:14:07.600 --> 00:14:13.519 And he definitely knows what it feels like to be at rock bottom because it doesn't get more rock bottom than dying on a cross. 00:14:13.759 --> 00:14:15.840 So Jesus understands all of it. 00:14:16.399 --> 00:14:20.559 Wherever you may have found yourself on that wheel earlier, he's been there. 00:14:21.679 --> 00:14:27.519 But then Jesus did something really different that no one else has ever done 00:15:00.320 --> 00:15:01.440 Even death. 00:15:01.759 --> 00:15:13.200 And when he rose again, some interesting things happened, and he described it to his disciples by saying that because he had defeated sin and death and risen, that he had been given all authority in heaven and on earth. 00:15:13.440 --> 00:15:14.559 All authority. 00:15:16.799 --> 00:15:26.720 The book of Hebrews describes it like this the Son radiates God the Father's own glory and expresses the very character of God. 00:15:26.799 --> 00:15:30.399 And he sustains everything by the mighty power of his command. 00:15:30.639 --> 00:15:38.320 When he had cleansed us from our sins, he sat down in the place of honor at the right hand of the majestic God in heaven. 00:15:38.879 --> 00:15:41.279 I want to focus on 00:16:26.480 In Ephesians chapter 2, this man named Paul, who's an early follower of Jesus, a leader in the early church, he wrote something really interesting. 00:16:26.559 --> 00:16:36.559 He said, But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in our transgressions. 00:16:37.039 --> 00:16:39.200 It is by grace that you've been saved. 00:16:39.600 --> 00:16:47.840 And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus. 00:16:48.639 --> 00:16:53.120 It says that we have been seated with
