and teachers of religious law now arrived from Jerusalem to see Jesus. 00:03:37.520 --> 00:03:41.599 They asked him, Why do your disciples disobey our age-old tradition? 00:03:41.759 --> 00:03:46.639 For they ignore our tradition of ceremonial hand washing before they eat. 00:03:46.960 --> 00:03:52.159 Jesus replied, And why do you, by your traditions, violate the direct commandments of God? 00:03:52.400 --> 00:03:59.520 For instance, God says, honor your father and mother, and anyone who speaks disrespectfully of father or mother must be put to death. 00:03:59.599 --> 00:04:04.400 But you say, and most of us are like, Whoo, I'm glad that's not a law now, that's a relief. 00:04:05.039 --> 00:04:10.960 But you say it's all right for people to say to their parents, sorry, I can't help The Lord says, These people come near to me with their mouth and honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. 00:04:41.600 --> 00:04:46.000 Their worship of me is based on merely human rules, they have been taught. 00:04:46.160 --> 00:04:51.839 So when we say that Jesus is not religious, right off the bat, we want to establish what we mean by religion. 00:04:52.480 --> 00:04:55.279 00:05:36.720 The building was big, the church was small in those days. 00:05:36.879 --> 00:05:42.720 But we had a banner on the front of our building, and it said, Jesus, not religion, and it made a bunch of people mad. 00:05:43.759 --> 00:05:49.439 And the truth is, the more religious you tend to be, the easier it is for you to be offended. 00:05:49.519 --> 00:05:50.639 So that was to be 00:06:06.399 --> 00:06:08.319 And you're like, yeah, okay. 00:06:09.199 --> 00:06:13.759 And so we put this banner up, and it the banner wasn't put up to make people mad. 00:06:13.839 --> 00:06:14.639 That wasn't the intention. 00:06:14.720 --> 00:06:22.319 It was just put up to say, hey, you may have grown up in this hyper-religious environment where everything was performance-based. 00:06:22.560 were the closest to Jesus were some of the people that would have been the furthest away from God according to the religion of the day. 00:06:40.399 --> 00:06:45.759 And many of those were the furthest from God, the furthest from Jesus, were the ones that would have been considered the most religious. 00:06:45.920 --> 00:06:47.040 They followed the rules the best. 00:06:47.199 --> talking about devotion to God, honoring God, humility before the Lord, deep desire to please the Lord, to do what he says. 00:07:20.079 --> 00:07:23.360 We're not talking about a love for God's word front end of this message is that it's super important for us to understand this because religion is sneaky. 00:07:43.360 --> 00:07:46.160 Jesus actually once described religion as yeast. 00:07:46.319 --> 00:07:49.439 It's like yeast and bread, and it'll spread, it'll go everywhere, you can't contain it. 00:07:49.519 --> 00:08:00.720 So we actually have to be really on guard against this kind of religion if we want to stay close to Jesus, if we want to keep moving closer to Jesus, because religion is all about distance and religion is sneaky. 00:08:00.800 --> 00:08:01.600 Let me give you an you had them follow a certain like strict code, and then all of a sudden you become grandparents, you throw all that out the window. 00:11:13.840 --> 00:11:18.879 Your children trying to raise their Testament that talked about washing hands, specifically when you would deal with dead bodies and dead animals, or when you were about to go into the temple as a priest, you had sort of a ceremonial
