00:00:30.800 --> 00:00:36.799 Like Jesus as a person on this earth, walking around, talking, doing things, miracles, all that, we get there today. 00:00:37.039 --> 00:00:40.880 And so we're calling this series the New Human. 00:00:41.200 --> 00:00:43.039 The series is called the New Human. 00:00:43.119 --> 00:00:47.439 We began this entire journey with a series called the Human Project. 00:00:47.679 --> 00:00:54.079 In Genesis chapter 1, God said, Let us make man and woman in our image to be like us. 00:00:54.240 --> 00:00:57.280 God created all of us to reflect him, to be like him. 00:00:57.439 --> 00:00:58.560 And then he gave us authority. 00:00:58.719 --> 00:01:01.039 He said, I'm going to put you in charge of the earth. 00:01:01.280 --> 00:01:04.319 Use the authority and the wisdom and the knowledge that I've given you. 00:01:04.400 --> 00:01:06.239 I've made you in my image to be like me. 00:01:06.400 --> 00:01:10.319 Use that and run things in a way like I would run things. 00:01:10.400 --> 00:01:12.959 And we just didn't. 00:01:13.519 --> 00:01:18.799 And up to this point, as we've been reading through all these stories, this human project does not seem to be going very well. 00:01:20.719 --> 00:01:23.599 People don't seem to reflect God very much. 00:01:23.840 --> 00:01:25.920 That wisdom that doesn't seem to be on display. 00:01:26.000 --> 00:01:29.760 A lot of bone-headed, stupid decisions, yes, but not that much wisdom. 00:01:30.000 --> 00:01:32.000 Every once in a while, there's like a glimmer of hope. 00:01:32.079 --> 00:01:35.040 There's someone where you see them, and you're like, yeah, this one, they've got it figured out. 00:01:35.120 --> 00:01:37.840 Like King David's one of those guys, like he's he's headed in a good direction. 00:01:37.920 --> 00:01:40.879 You're like, yeah, this guy, I like this guy, and then oh no. 00:01:42.079 --> 00:01:44.159 Like absolute failure. 00:01:44.879 --> 00:01:54.239 And so it's pretty much this constant cycle of God doing amazing things, and then people doing everything they can do to undo what God has done. 00:01:54.400 --> 00:01:57.200 And everything has just spiraled and spiraled. 00:01:57.280 --> 00:02:00.480 The nation of Israel, gone, conquered. 00:02:01.200 --> 00:02:02.480 And here we are. 00:02:04.159 --> 00:02:07.920 The story so far has been a tragedy in many ways. 00:02:09.360 --> 00:02:19.520 But then you you turn to the book of Matthew, the New Testament, and a new human steps into the story. 00:02:20.080 --> 00:02:24.080 And he is, in a word, different. 00:02:25.120 --> 00:02:27.360 Let me give you a few examples. 00:02:28.159 --> 00:02:31.599 Matthew chapter 7, verses 28 and 29. 00:02:31.759 --> 00:02:36.000 When Jesus had finished saying those things, the crowds were amazed at his teaching. 00:02:36.240 --> 00:02:41.759 For he taught with real authority, quite unlike their teachers of religious law. 00:02:42.000 --> 00:02:45.360 Jesus spoke differently, talked different. 00:02:45.680 --> 00:02:50.719 When Jesus spoke, people listened and they were amazed. 00:02:52.240 --> 00:02:55.280 He was completely different than the people that they had grown up listening to. 00:02:55.360 --> 00:02:59.039 He spoke with a kind of authority that it just seemed new. 00:03:00.319 --> 00:03:08.960 One of my favorite stories, John chapter 7, Jesus is teaching in the temple, and he wasn't really welcome there because the religious leaders hated him. 00:03:09.120 --> 00:03:15.520 And so they sent their guards, they had temple guards to arrest Jesus, and the guards get there and they listen to Jesus teach. 00:03:15.680 --> 00:03:17.599 And then they like forget to arrest him. 00:03:18.000 --> 00:03:18.719 It's amazing. 00:03:19.039 --> 00:03:27.280 They go back in John chapter 7, it says, when the temple guards return without having arrested Jesus, the leading priests and Pharisees demanded, Why didn't you bring him in? 00:12:45.120 --> 00:12:46.720 Are you the one we've been waiting for? 00:12:46.799 --> 00:12:49.039 Are you the one we've been expecting? 00:12:49.279 --> 00:12:54.080 One of Jesus' earliest disciples, a man named Philip, ran to find his friend Nathanael. 00:12:54.240 --> 00:12:58.399 In John chapter 1, it says, Philip found Nathanael and told him, We have found the one. 00:12:59.120 --> 00:13:06.159 We have found the one that Moses wrote about in the law, and about whom the prophets also wrote. 00:13:06.399 --> 00:13:10.080 Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph. 00:13:11.679 --> 00:13:17.919 He says, The one that the prophets and Moses himself spoke about. 00:13:18.399 --> 00:13:27.279 In Deuteronomy chapter 18, verse 18, God speaks to Moses and says, I will raise up a prophet like you from among their fellow Israelites. 00:13:27.360 --> 00:13:31.279 I will put my words in his mouth, and he will tell the people everything I command him. 00:13:31.440 --> 00:13:34.799 And after this, there's many prophets in Israel's history. 00:13:35.200 --> 00:13:40.639 There's Elijah, Ezekiel, Isaiah, Elisha. 00:13:40.879 --> 00:13:42.639 There's all these incredible prophets. 00:13:42.720 --> 00:13:48.480 But even after all of their lives, the people of Israel were still waiting on the one like Moses. 00:13:48.720 --> 00:13:54.240 They recognized that, hey, these guys were awesome, but they're clearly not the one. 00:13:54.320 --> 00:13:59.679 And so they were still living in anticipation of this one that Moses had talked about. 00:14:00.159 --> 00:14:02.240 And Philip tells Nathaniel, we found him. 00:14:02.399 --> 00:14:03.759 It's Jesus of Nazareth. 00:14:03.919 --> 00:14:09.120 He is the one that Moses and all the other prophets spoke of. 00:14:11.039 --> 00:14:16.240 There's all these things in the Old Testament, like left and right, that point to Jesus. 00:14:16.559 --> 00:14:19.279 It's actually kind of uncanny, it's unbelievable. 00:14:19.759 --> 00:14:29.840 And that's why it's been so easy as we've gone through the entire story of the Bible so far this year in the Old Testament, it's been so easy to connect it to Jesus every single Sunday because it's always been about Jesus. 00:14:30.080 --> 00:14:32.960 It's always been pointing to Jesus. 00:14:33.440 --> 00:14:37.200 So many things that maybe you've never even realized before are just pictures of Jesus. 00:14:37.360 --> 00:14:39.360 For example, take the story of Passover. 00:14:40.240 --> 00:14:44.000 It's the story of the people of Israel and their slaves in Egypt. 00:14:44.080 --> 00:14:53.120 And if you don't know the story, as God rescues them with plague after plague, just trying to convince Pharaoh in Egypt to let the people go, the final plague is a plague of death. 00:14:53.600 --> 00:14:58.240 And God tells his people here's what I want you to do, so that the angel of death passes over your homes. 00:14:58.399 --> 00:15:03.279 I want you to take some blood, blood from a lamb. 00:15:04.000 --> 00:15:07.039 And I want you to put some of that blood at the top of your doorpost. 00:15:07.279 --> 00:15:13.679 And I want you to put some blood on each side of your doorpost, and that will be a sign to the angel of death to pass over you and pass you by. 00:15:14.879 --> 00:15:18.799 And for centuries, the people of Israel did that every Passover. 00:15:18.879 --> 00:15:23.519 Well, just so happens that Passover is the same time that Jesus was crucified. 00:15:24.320 --> 00:15:28.720 It just so happens that Jesus is called the Lamb of God. 00:15:29.120 --> 00:15:41.039 It just so happens that Jesus was born in Bethlehem, which was a city number one prophesied related to the Messiah, but also the city where every single year the lamb that was chosen specifically for the Passover sacrifice was chosen out of Bethlehem. 00:15:41.279 --> 00:15:49.600 The shepherds that came to see the birth of Jesus were very likely the same shepherds who tended the flock that's purpose was to raise up the Passover lamb every single year. 00:15:50.639 --> 00:15:54.320 And then you think about you think about blood at the top of a doorpost and on each side. 00:15:54.480 --> 00:15:56.480 What would happen to blood if you put it at the top of a doorpost?
