00:07:08.959 And I use that on purpose because I know that in each of our lives we have not so lighthearted, not so silly examples of where we feel like things have been broken beyond repair, we've lost everything that maybe matters to us, or something so precious, or maybe someone so precious, that it just makes us question everything. 00:07:09.120 --> 00:07:12.800 It makes us wonder if life could ever be the same again. 00:07:13.279 --> 00:07:21.519 And that's the that's the pervasive feeling operating in the lives of the people that we're gonna study for the next few weeks. 00:07:22.240 --> 00:07:26.879 You see, up to this point, we've been following for the most part the story of the nation of Israel. 00:07:27.279 --> 00:07:33.839 The Old Testament tells us the story of this group of people that God literally picks, and he picks them out of obscurity. 00:07:33.920 --> 00:07:37.920 It starts with a man named Abraham who's just a childless shepherd. 00:07:38.480 --> 00:07:49.920 And he calls them and tells them, makes them promises that they're gonna become a great nation, that they're gonna have all this land, that they're gonna be a mighty people, and against all odds, that happens. 00:07:50.160 --> 00:07:52.720 And it's not by their own strength, not even close. 00:07:52.879 --> 00:07:55.439 They don't have enough strength, they don't have enough might to do it themselves. 00:07:55.519 --> 00:08:00.959 They're surrounded by much more powerful nations in the traditional sense, but they have the favor of God. 00:08:01.439 --> 00:08:08.800 And time and time again, God does miraculous things to rescue them, to establish them, and to protect them. 00:08:08.879 --> 00:08:12.800 But if you've been here for the last few series, things haven't been going so ignoring God, they've been following false gods left and right. 00:08:27.920 --> 00:08:35.519 They've tolerated so much idolatry, so much immorality, so much injustice, and God has warned them. cannot let things get this bad and stay this bad. 00:08:45.679 --> 00:08:50.960 And so they've they've been warned and they've ignored those warnings. 00:08:51.840 --> 00:08:55.600 In fact, they've even killed many of the prophets that God sent to warn them. 00:08:55.919 --> 00:08:58.639 And now the day of reckoning has come. 00:08:59.519 --> 00:09:17.200 It starts with the northern kingdom of Israel, they're conquered by the Assyrians, and then a short time after, at least in the scope of history, the the southern kingdom of Judah, where the capital of Jerusalem is, where their temple is, they are completely overrun, destroyed, and defeated by the Babylonians. 00:09:17.519 --> 00:09:27.120 We get there in the book of Daniel, Daniel chapter 1, verses 1 and 2 says, During the third year of King Jehoiakim's reign in Judah, King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon came to Jerusalem and besieged it. 00:09:27.360 --> 00:09:33.360 The Lord gave him victory over King Jehoiakim of Judah and permitted him to take some of the sacred objects from the temple of God. 00:09:33.600 --> 00:09:39.039 So Nebuchadnezzar took them back to the land of Babylonia and placed them in the treasure house of his God. 00:09:39.600 --> 00:09:40.879 And that's it. 00:09:41.679 --> 00:09:43.679 It's the end of an era. 00:09:44.720 --> 00:09:46.000 It's the end of an era. 00:09:46.399 --> 00:09:52.960 There's no more Israel as a nation, there's no more Judah, there's no more Jerusalem, there's no more temple, it's it's gone. 00:09:53.120 --> 00:09:56.240 Forget about your favorite political candidate losing an election. 00:09:56.320 --> 00:09:58.879 This is like you don't have a nation anymore. 00:09:59.840 --> 00:10:12.480 And so much of their identity has always been wrapped up in the fact that they're this people that God has picked and set apart, and they've grown into this mighty nation, and now all of that is it's all gone. 00:10:12.639 --> 00:10:14.240 But they've lost it all. 00:10:15.039 --> 00:10:19.919 And this time, David does not defeat Goliath. 00:10:22.000 --> 00:10:26.799 Their nation is completely shattered, and their people are scattered. 00:10:28.879 --> 00:10:30.000 Everything changes. 00:10:31.360 --> 00:11:03.120 And it's hopeless and it's dark, and yet, it's amazing how often this is the turn in scripture, and yet we have these stories of these men and women who find themselves living in the aftermath of the disaster and in unbelievably difficult circumstances find a way to navigate life so perfectly that we actually have some of the most inspirational and aspirational stories that we have in the entirety of Scripture in the aftermath of this devastation. 00:11:03.440 --> 00:11:08.720 In this shattered and scattered world, we get people like Daniel, who we're going to look at today, along with a few of his friends. 00:11:08.879 --> 00:11:11.679 We get people like Nehemiah. 00:11:12.000 --> 00:11:13.919 We get people like Queen Esther. 00:11:15.120 --> 00:11:20.399 And they live these unbelievable lives in very difficult situations, situations that are so hard they have to thread the needle. 00:11:20.480 --> 00:11:22.879 There's not a lot of wiggle room, there's no margin for error. 00:11:22.960 --> 00:11:27.440 They have to operate so perfectly in order to succeed, and they do. 00:11:28.559 --> 00:11:30.159 Because God is with them. that does not encourage them in any way, any serious way, to follow God. 00:11:56.320 --> 00:12:03.039 In fact, it's a culture that very often pushes them and gives them every incentive not to follow that we can relate to this. 00:12:52.159 --> 00:13:00.799 That these people provide for us a blueprint of how to live well and how to live for the Lord in a culture that isn't helping you do that at what we're gonna do. 00:13:08.639 --> 00:13:14.960 We're gonna go through three stories from the book of Daniel, and we're just gonna go through them one after another, all in one chunk. 00:13:15.039 --> 00:13:17.600 And then we're gonna we're gonna ask ourselves, what's the takeaway? 00:13:17.679 --> 00:13:29.440 What's the one thing that these people show to us that gives us the ability to emulate them, to learn from them, to learn from the Lord, and say, this is how I'm gonna live my life in light of what I've learned. 00:13:29.679 --> 00:13:33.840 And so I'm gonna start with Daniel chapter one. 00:13:35.039 --> 00:13:36.399 Daniel chapter one. 00:13:37.759 --> 00:13:48.159 It says, Then the king ordered Ashpenaz, his chief of staff, to bring to the palace some of the young men of Judah's royal family and other noble families who have been brought to Babylon as captives. 00:13:48.399 --> 00:13:51.679 Select only strong, healthy, and good-looking young men, he said. 00:13:51.840 --> 00:13:58.480 Make sure they're well versed in every branch of learning, are gifted with knowledge and good judgment, and are suited to serve in the royal palace. 00:13:58.720 --> 00:14:01.279 Train these young men in the language and literature of Babylon. 00:14:01.440 --> 00:14:05.039 The king assigned them a daily ration of food and wine from his own kitchens. 00:14:05.279 --> 00:14:09.120 They were to be trained for three years, and then they would enter the royal service. 00:14:09.360 --> 00:14:15.600 Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah were four of the young men chosen, all from the tribe of Judah. 00:14:15.840 --> 00:14:18.559 The chief of staff renamed them with these Babylonian names. 00:14:18.720 --> 00:14:25.600 Daniel was called Belteshazzar, Hananiah was called Shadrach, Meshael was called Meshach, and Azariah was called Abednego. 00:14:26.399 --> 00:14:32.320 But Daniel was determined not to defile himself by eating the food and wine given to them by the king. 00:14:32.480 --> 00:14:38.480 They had these strict laws in their old country about what was right to eat and what was not right to eat. 00:14:38.559 --> 00:14:40.080 And Daniel says, I'm not doing it. 00:14:40.320 --> 00:14:45.279 He asked the chief of staff for permission not to eat these unacceptable foods. 00:14:45.440 --> 00:14:53.200 Now, God had given the chief of staff both respect and affection for Daniel, but he responded, I'm afraid of my Lord the King, who has ordered that you eat this food and wine. 00:14:53.279 --> 00:14:59.360 If you become pale and thin compared to the other youths your age, I'm afraid the king will have me beheaded. 00:14:59.759 --> 00:15:05.840 Daniel spoke with the attendant who had been appointed by the chief of staff to look after Daniel, Ananiah, Meshael, and Azariah. 00:15:06.000 --> 00:15:11.519 Please test us for ten days on a diet of vegetables and water, Daniel said. 00:15:11.759 --> 00:15:15.840 And at the end of the ten days, see how we look compared to the other young men who were eating the king's food. 00:15:15.919 --> 00:15:18.480 Then make your decision in light of what you see. 00:15:18.720 --> 00:15:22.879 The attendant agreed to Daniel's suggestion and tested them for ten days. 00:15:23.039 --> 00:15:29.440 And at the end of the ten days, Daniel and his three friends looked healthier and better nourished than the young men who had been eating the food assigned by the king. 00:15:29.519 --> 00:15:34.000 So after that, the attendant fed them only vegetables instead of the food and wine provided for the others. 00:15:34.240 --> 00:15:40.399 God gave these four young men an unusual aptitude for understanding every aspect of literature and wisdom. 00:15:40.559 --> 00:15:45.279 And God gave Daniel the special ability to interpret meanings of visions and dreams. 00:15:45.519 --> 00:15:50.639 And when the training period ordered by the king was completed, the chief of staff brought all the young men to King Nebuchadnezzar. 00:15:50.799 --> 00:15:57.200 The king talked with them, and no one impressed him as much as Daniel, Hananiah, Meshael, and Azariah. 00:15:57.600 --> 00:15:59.039 So they entered the royal service. 00:15:59.200 --> 00:16:10.000 Whenever the king consulted them in any matter, any matter requiring wisdom and balanced judgment, he found them ten times more capable than any of the magicians or enchanters in his entire kingdom. 00:16:10.960 --> 00:16:14.559 So these guys stand out. 00:16:15.519 --> 00:16:17.360 They make a name for themselves. 00:16:17.600 --> 00:16:22.159 And they're now established as trusted advisors in the kingdom of Babylon. 00:16:22.559 --> 00:16:26.720 And if you turn the chapter to chapter two, Nebuchadnezzar has this dream. 00:16:26.879 --> 00:16:32.000 And it's a really freaky dream involving a gold statue with other metals that are part of the statue. 00:16:32.159 --> 00:16:34.080 And Nebuchadnezzar doesn't know what to do. 00:16:34.399 --> 00:16:42.639 The dream really bothers him, so he basically orders his men to tell him what the dream means or else, and the only one who has the ability to do it is Daniel. 00:16:42.879 --> 00:16:46.159 Because God's given him this ability to interpret dreams. 00:16:46.480 --> 00:16:57.440 And so God tells Nebuchadnezzar, or God tells Daniel, the interpretation of the dream, Daniel tells it to Nebuchadnezzar, and Nebuchadnezzar's like, man, you're amazing, you're incredible, and your God must be amazing. 00:16:57.600 --> 00:17:00.639 Now Daniel's even able to share his God with the king. 00:17:00.799 --> 00:17:08.079 But if you turn the chapter to chapter three, uh somehow the takeaway that Nebuchadnezzar has from this whole thing is like way off. 00:17:08.240 --> 00:17:17.920 Because he decides that the logical thing to do after having a dream where he's a statue made of gold is to actually make a giant statue made of gold of himself and make these guys weren't comfortable eating meat and wine, you gotta know where they're headed with this decision. 00:17:43.119 --> 00:17:50.720 And so we get there in Daniel chapter 3, it says that some of the astrologers went to the king and informed on the Jews. 00:17:50.960 --> 00:18:02.000 They said to King Nebuchadnezzar, Long live the king, you issued a decree requiring all the people to bow down and worship the gold statue that when they hear the sound of the horn, flute, zither, lyre, harp, pipes, and other musical instruments. 00:18:02.160 --> 00:18:05.359 I don't know why they say other, what Daniel believes and who Daniel worships, and so they convinced Darius to sign this decree that says anyone who prays to someone other than him or his gods should be executed. 00:21:29.680 -->
