movies of Moses. 00:00:52.799 --> 00:00:56.000 So it's it's pretty universal in terms of people knowing about Moses. 00:00:56.240 --> 00:01:04.000 And it's Moses, and he leads the people of Israel out of Egypt into the promised land eventually, and that's what we tend to focus on at this section of Scripture. 00:01:04.079 --> 00:01:11.040 But honestly, Moses is a big part of it, but God is definitely the primary actor in this section of the story. 00:01:11.200 --> 00:01:22.560 It's not just like Moses doing things, it is God doing things, and sometimes using Moses to either, you know, this is the story where God sort of steps into the forefront and we see him differently. 00:01:31.840 --> 00:01:35.519 It's almost like he goes from being a little fuzzy to really in focus. up, but it stays with me, is that we're like toothpicks, all of us. 00:02:43.919 --> 00:02:49.919 We're very fragile, but through Jesus and our faith in him, we're like toothpicks who have been duct part of, and it's very interesting. 00:02:56.879 --> 00:03:04.639 Today, we're gonna look at one more aspect of God through this story, and it's the fact that God is personal. 00:03:05.439 --> distant from God, you feel like God is is far away from you. 00:03:20.319 --> 00:03:26.719 Maybe you even have faith and have believed for a long time, but for some reason it just doesn't feel like God is near, like God is close. 00:03:26.800 --> 00:03:33.919 Maybe you think that's because you don't deserve to be close to God, or maybe you've tried and you're like, I'm going to church and I'm different. 00:03:41.680 --> 00:03:57.919 But understand that God does not in any way, shape, or form desire to have a distant relationship with any of us as he shows us through the story of Moses, and people of Israel and tell them, the God of your ancestors has sent me to you, they'll ask me, Well, what is his name? 00:05:54.879 --> 00:05:56.160 What should I tell them? 00:05:56.480 --> this to the people of Israel, Yahweh is a Hebrew word. 00:06:10.160 --> 00:06:14.800 Yahweh, the God of your ancestors, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, the God of Jacob, has sent me to you. verse 4. 00:06:40.800 --> 00:06:42.720 Suddenly the Lord called out, Samuel. 00:06:42.879 --> 00:06:43.839 Samuel's a young boy. 00:06:44.000 --> 00:06:46.399 If you don't know the story of Samuel, he's just a young kid. 00:06:46.560 --> 00:06:52.240 And one night God just speaks to him, and God begins speaking to him by calling his name. 00:06:52.480 --> 00:06:55.199 In Genesis, there's the story of this woman named Hagar. 00:06:55.519 --> 00:07:01.920 And she's the servant of Abraham's wife, Sarah, and Sarah mistreats her very badly. 00:07:02.000 --> 00:07:02.959 She runs away. 00:07:03.120 --> 00:07:05.439 And while she's in the wilderness, God shows up. 00:07:05.600 --> 00:07:11.839 In Genesis 16, it says, The angel of the Lord found Hagar beside a spring of water in the wilderness along the road to Shur. 00:07:12.160 --> 00:07:16.480 The angel said to her, Hagar, Sarai's servant, where have you come from? 00:07:16.560 --> 00:07:17.600 And where are you going? 00:07:17.759 --> 00:07:20.000 God lets her know right away, I know you. 00:07:20.319 --> 00:07:24.879 I know who you are, I know you by name, because I'm a personal God. 00:07:26.240 --> 00:07:29.040 Jesus exemplifies this many times. 00:07:29.360 --> 00:07:32.000 One of the most obvious might be in Luke chapter 19. 00:07:32.079 --> 00:07:35.439 It says that Jesus entered Jericho and he made his way through the town. 00:07:35.600 --> 00:07:41.040 There was a man there named Zacchaeus, who was the chief tax collector in the region, and he'd become very rich. 00:07:41.199 --> 00:07:44.560 Tax collectors, if you don't know, became rich by extorting people for money. 00:07:44.720 --> 00:07:46.480 So he's rich at other people's expense. 00:07:46.560 --> 00:07:52.720 He would have been the most hated person, viewed as the most immoral and disgusting person in the entire community. 00:07:52.959 --> 00:08:01.600 He tried to get a look at Jesus, but he was too short to see over the crowd, so he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore fig tree beside the road, for Jesus was going to pass that way. 00:08:01.759 --> 00:08:05.199 And when Jesus came by, he looked up at Zacchaeus and called him by name. 00:08:05.439 --> 00:08:08.240 Zacchaeus, he said, Quick, come down. 00:08:08.800 --> 00:08:11.680 I must be a guest in your home today. 00:08:11.839 --> 00:08:15.439 He doesn't just say, Hey, dude in the tree, right? 00:08:15.600 --> 00:08:17.360 He doesn't say, hey, little little man. 00:08:17.839 --> 00:08:18.079 Right? 00:08:18.240 --> 00:08:20.000 He says, hey, Zacchaeus. 00:08:20.879 --> 00:08:22.160 He knows his name. 00:08:22.639 --> 00:08:26.160 And Jesus has no reason to know his name. 00:08:27.199 --> 00:08:31.519 And it's clear if you keep reading the story of Zacchaeus, well in John chapter 4. 00:08:51.440 --> 00:08:53.360 She's got all kinds of baggage, all kinds of issues. 00:08:53.440 --> 00:08:54.720 She's one of my favorite characters in the Bible. 00:08:54.799 --> 00:08:55.840 I talk about her pretty often. 00:08:56.000 --> 00:09:00.240 She's the first person Jesus ever explicitly says, I'm the Messiah to. 00:09:00.320 --> 00:09:01.519 She's the first one. 00:20:53.200 --> 00:20:57.039 And so God responds, tell them, Echiah has sent me to you. 00:20:57.200 --> 00:21:00.640 Now, that Hebrew word Echia means I will be. 00:21:00.799 --> 00:21:05.759 In other words, God's name means that he is the one who is and who will be. 00:21:05.920 --> 00:21:09.359 God's existence doesn't depend on anyone or anything else. 00:21:09.599 --> 00:21:11.440 This God simply is. 00:21:11.920 --> 00:21:18.000 But it will sound kind of strange for Moses to go say to the Israelites, I will be, has sent me to you. 00:21:18.160 --> 00:21:20.240 Only God can say, I will be. 00:21:20.400 --> 00:21:24.559 So in the next sentence, God tells Moses the version he should say aloud. 00:21:24.799 --> 00:21:28.559 Yahweh, the God of our ancestors, he has sent me to you. 00:21:28.720 --> 00:21:33.359 Now, that word Yahweh is the ancient Hebrew form of the verb he will be. 00:21:33.519 --> 00:21:36.079 And this is the personal name of the God of Israel. 00:21:36.240 --> 00:21:39.839 It appears over 6,500 times in the Old Testament. 00:21:40.000 --> 00:21:41.039 Now, here's what's interesting. 00:21:41.279 --> 00:21:46.160 Over the centuries, Israelites wanted to honor the sacred nature of this divine name. 00:21:46.240 --> 00:21:55.279 So, as they read the Hebrew Bible aloud and they came to this name, they stopped saying Yahweh, and instead started saying the Hebrew word for Lord, which is Adonai. 00:21:55.519 --> 00:22:03.759 Now, this practice has been continued throughout the centuries, and so later, when people started Translating the Bible into English, they adopted the same practice. 00:22:03.920 --> 00:22:09.920 Instead of spelling out the divine name, they translated it as Lord spelled in all capital letters. 00:22:10.079 --> 00:22:10.960 Okay, you got that? 00:22:11.119 --> 00:22:12.319 Good, because there's more. 00:22:12.559 --> 00:22:19.119 Ancient Jewish scribes wanted to prevent anyone from even accidentally saying this name aloud when you read the Hebrew Bible. 00:22:19.200 --> 00:22:24.400 And so they came up with a visual device to remind you to make sure you say Adonai. 00:22:24.480 --> 00:22:27.680 They took the four consonant letters of the divine name. 00:22:27.839 --> 00:22:31.359 These letters correspond to our English letters Y-H-W-H. 00:22:31.759 --> 00:22:40.640 Then they inserted the three vowels from the word Adonai and combined these together to create an artificial hybrid word. 00:22:40.799 --> 00:22:43.519 Which, if you pronounced it, it would say Yahuwah. 00:22:43.599 --> 00:22:46.000 But no Israelite ever said Yahuwah. 00:22:46.079 --> 00:22:49.359 It's simply a visual reminder to say the word Adonai. 00:22:49.519 --> 00:22:50.799 Now it gets more interesting. 00:22:50.960 --> 00:22:56.079 Much later, Christian scribes came along who didn't know that Yahuwah was an artificial word. 00:22:56.160 --> 00:22:59.599 And so they began to say it aloud and spell it in their writings. 00:22:59.759 --> 00:23:03.200 This is the word that eventually entered into English as Jehovah. 00:23:03.279 --> 00:23:05.119 It's a word many people still use today. 00:23:05.279 --> 00:23:10.799 But the main thing is, the word Lord in all capital letters is an indication of the divine name. 00:23:10.960 --> 00:23:16.319 Don't confuse it with the word Lord in your English translations that's not in all capital letters. 00:23:16.480 --> 00:23:20.640 That is the actual Hebrew word Adon, which just means Lord or Master. 00:23:20.799 --> 00:23:26.240 This word can refer to people like kings or the master of a servant, even a shepherd over his sheep. 00:23:26.319 --> 00:23:33.519 And sometimes biblical authors will use this word to refer to God, like in the phrases the Lord of all the earth, or the Lord of Lords. 00:23:33.680 --> 00:23:41.279 But behind all of these words, Jehovah, Lord, Adonai, stands the original divine name of the God of Israel. 00:23:41.440 --> 00:23:46.000 It refers to the one who was, who is, and who forever will be. 00:23:46.880 --> 00:23:48.000 Yeah, that's cool, right? 00:23:49.200 --> 00:23:52.160 So you're like, well, that's unnecessarily complicated. 00:23:53.440 --> 00:23:54.400 And it is. 00:23:55.440 --> 00:23:58.400 And here's the question: who who made it complicated? 00:23:59.279 --> 00:23:59.839 People. 00:24:00.079 --> 00:24:00.720 We did. 00:24:01.279 --> 00:24:11.279 So, as you saw in the video, over the centuries, after Moses' time, this idea sprang up that, well, we we want to make sure we honor God. 00:24:11.519 --> 00:24:16.240 And so, you know, let's just not call him by the name that he asked us to call him. 00:24:17.039 --> 00:24:20.160 Because, you know, maybe, maybe we'll we'll say it flippantly. 00:24:20.240 --> 00:24:24.799 You can see that, you know, the Bible says that you should uh make sure you keep the name of God holy. 00:24:25.039 --> 00:24:25.279 Right? 00:24:25.440 --> 00:24:28.960 Jesus actually prayed, Our Father in heaven, may your name be kept holy. 00:24:29.759 --> 00:24:31.680 And so they said, well let's just not say the name. 00:24:31.759 --> 00:24:40.880 And instead they start saying Adonai, and then they make these visual cues that if people are reading it, make sure you don't accidentally read Yahweh, so we won't write Yahweh, because then you might say it. 00:24:41.039 --> 00:24:48.160 Instead, we'll come up with this sort of word picture that reminds you to say Adonai, but also remember that it is Yahweh, and it just becomes this complicated mess. 00:24:48.240 --> 00:25:00.319 And all of it, all of it was based off this false idea that God would somehow be upset if we if we used his name too much. 00:25:00.960 --> 00:25:06.240 When clearly God wanted us to call him by name, he wanted us to have a personal relationship with him. 00:25:06.880 --> 00:25:09.039 He tells Moses, like, this is my name. 00:25:09.200 --> 00:25:10.079 Tell this to the people. 00:25:10.240 --> 00:25:19.039 And for centuries they would have said, Yahweh, Yahweh, it wasn't for another several hundred years that this whole idea developed that says, no, don't call him by name, let's use this title instead. 00:25:19.200 --> 00:25:20.640 But God never said that. 00:25:20.799 --> 00:25:22.880 That was what people just assumed. 00:25:23.359 --> 00:25:32.720 And so what you can see in this is this amazing example of how we complicate things with God and we create distance with God that he never intends. 00:25:33.839 --> 00:25:44.400 The distance that that that created, this kind of religious distance that God is is so far removed from us that we can't even say his name is something God never intended. 00:25:45.039 --> 00:25:45.839 We did that. 00:25:48.480 --> 00:25:49.119 We did that. 00:25:49.359 --> 00:25:51.200 He wants us to know his name. 00:25:52.720 --> 00:25:55.200 It matters to him that we have a personal relationship with him. 00:25:55.359 --> 00:25:58.960 In fact, years ago, there was a gentleman that I was talking to. 00:25:59.200 --> 00:26:00.240 His name was Jack. 00:26:00.400 --> 00:26:15.279 And Jack was having a hard time with this sort of general idea of why does it matter if we address God as Jesus or if if people who call God by a different name, maybe a different religion, like what does it matter? 00:26:15.519 --> 00:26:23.759 A lot of times people's objections to God is we're kind of wrestling through the idea of whether or not we believe in God, that we want to put our faith in God, wherever you're at in that wrestling. 00:26:24.000 --> 00:26:32.319 A lot of times the objections people have to God fall into this category that's basically like, well, if I were God, I wouldn't do it this way. 00:26:32.559 --> 00:26:39.359 And then it's sort of like you putting your own moral values on God, saying God should be more like you. 00:26:39.759 --> 00:26:46.240 And so for him, it's like, well, I wouldn't care if I was God, I wouldn't care if people call me Jesus or Buddha or whatever. 00:26:46.559 --> 00:26:52.160 And so that was something I haven't had a conversation like that in a while, but that was something that people would bring up several years ago. 00:26:52.319 --> 00:26:53.519 And so he's talking to me about that. 00:26:53.599 --> 00:26:54.400 He's like, what does it matter?
