disqualify themselves from following God or maybe even going to church or getting baptized or taking some step in their faith. 00:01:02.159 --> 00:01:05.519 And the idea is like once I have it all beforehand this morning talking about some of these stories that we're gonna read today. 00:02:24.639 --> 00:02:30.800 And it's like these are the kind of stories that if they happened in your family, convince people that you're the ones that know the real God, because look at your lives and how wonderful and together they are. 00:02:49.759 --> 00:02:56.719 Like you would never tell these stories, and yet these stories make it into our scriptures because the Bible doesn't lie to us. 00:02:56.800 --> 00:03:00.879 The Bible isn't trying to sell us anything, it's not trying to impress us. 00:03:01.120 --> 00:03:11.199 That's one of the powers of scripture is that it speaks to human nature in a way that is so genuine, authentic, and raw that we can trust it because it tells us the God. 00:03:18.400 --> 00:03:30.560 It is a story of broken people who have a God that is so incredible and so amazing and patient and loving and forgiving and powerful that he will use anyone, no matter how broken their lives are. 00:03:30.639 --> 00:03:34.080 And that's really encouraging for me, and I hope it's encouraging for you as well. 00:03:34.240 --> 00:03:37.439 Unless, of course, you're one of the ones who has it all together, then you're good. 00:03:39.439 --> 00:03:48.719 But also in these stories, and this is maybe the most amazing part to me, is that you read these 00:04:42.160 God makes him a promise in Genesis chapter 12, verses 2 through 3. 00:04:42.480 --> 00:04:48.560 He says to him, I will make you into a great nation, I will bless you and make you famous, 00:05:00.399 --> 00:05:02.240 And Abram believed. 00:05:03.199 --> 00:05:13.360 He was a believer, he was a man of faith, and his life was messy and broken, but he had faith, and when God asked him to 00:05:35.920 And God ends up changing his name to Israel. 00:05:36.079 --> 00:05:38.079 Israel becomes the namesake of his nation. 00:05:38.240 --> 00:05:39.759 And it means to wrestle with God. 00:06:09.199 --> 00:06:11.920 Uh his grandfather Abram had two sons. 00:06:12.079 --> 00:06:18.800 One of those children was not with his wife, and so with his wife, he only had one, and that was the son that everything in that promise had to go through. 00:06:19.120 --> 00:06:21.439 But then Isaac, his son, had two sons. 00:06:21.519 --> 00:06:24.000 So it's kind of like a 50-50 thing, right? surely, of the twelve, there's got to at least be one that's a good candidate for that, and it turns out there is. 00:07:06.319 --> 00:07:09.040 In fact, Jacob is fortunate. 00:07:09.199 --> 00:07:11.600 He has like a superstar of a son. 00:07:11.920 --> 00:07:13.759 He has this son named Joseph. 00:07:14.079 --> 00:07:16.160 And Joseph's amazing. 00:07:16.800 --> 00:07:24.720 Like, actually, Joseph's one of the few characters that we have in all of Scripture that we don't really have a story of true failure. 00:07:24.959 --> 00:07:32.720 Like, there's little things you can sort of pick apart and read between the lines, but there's not really some glaring mistake or moral failure. 00:07:32.800 --> 00:07:36.240 Like, he is someone that appears to have it all together. 00:07:36.720 --> 00:07:39.360 There's so many qualities about Joseph that we could we could talk about. 00:07:39.439 --> 00:07:40.399 Joseph was a dreamer. 00:07:40.560 --> 00:07:42.480 Like, literally, he had dreams from God. 00:07:42.639 --> 00:07:45.519 Genesis chapter 37, verses 5 through 8. 00:07:45.600 --> 00:07:48.720 One night Joseph had a dream, and when he told his brothers about it, they hated him more than ever. 00:07:48.800 --> 00:07:51.120 Oh, by the way, Joseph, his brothers didn't like him. 00:07:51.600 --> 00:07:53.040 Listen to this dream, he said. 00:07:53.120 --> 00:08:00.240 We were out in the field tying up bundles of grain, suddenly my bundle stood up, and your bundles all gathered around and bowed low before mine. 00:08:00.319 --> 00:08:02.160 I wonder why they didn't like it. 00:08:04.000 --> 00:08:13.360 So again, maybe you can read between the lines and say, okay, maybe, maybe Joseph has some pride in sharing a story like that, sharing a dream, because then he goes, I wonder what that means. 00:08:13.839 --> 00:08:16.639 But here's the thing: that story proved true. 00:08:16.879 --> 00:08:18.560 That dream, that that happened. 00:08:18.720 --> 00:08:20.079 God was speaking to him. 00:08:20.240 --> 00:08:22.079 Joseph is someone who hears from God. 00:08:22.160 --> 00:08:23.439 He's a dreamer. 00:08:24.959 --> 00:08:25.519 That's amazing. 00:08:25.680 --> 00:08:27.360 Joseph is a man of character. 00:08:27.600 --> 00:08:30.399 His brothers hate him for a variety of reasons. 00:08:30.480 --> 00:08:37.519 One of those reasons being his dreams, and the fact that his father clearly loves Joseph more than the other brothers, so they conspire. 00:08:37.679 --> 00:08:48.960 Originally they're going to kill him, but they just decide to sell him as a slave to Egypt and act like he's dead and present his clothes to his father and say he's been killed by a wild animal, and all the while he's out of their lives. 00:08:49.120 --> 00:08:49.919 That happens. 00:08:50.080 --> 00:08:52.480 It's a messy, broken family, like I said. 00:08:52.960 --> 00:08:56.159 But while he's there, he ends up rising through the ranks of slavery. 00:08:56.240 --> 00:09:02.639 He becomes the basically the lead administrator in the household of this man named Potiphar, who's a very important man in Egypt. 00:09:02.720 --> 00:09:04.639 He's someone who works directly with Pharaoh. 00:09:04.799 --> 00:09:05.919 It's a big deal. 00:09:06.080 --> 00:09:13.600 And Potiphar has this wife, and the problem for Joseph is that not only is he talented and he's someone that hears from God, he's apparently very good looking as well. 00:09:13.759 --> 00:09:21.360 And so in Genesis chapter 39, verse 6 begins by saying Joseph was a very handsome and well-built young man. 00:09:21.600 --> 00:09:25.200 And Potiphar's wife soon began to look at him lustfully. 00:09:25.360 --> 00:09:27.440 Come and sleep with me, she demanded. 00:09:27.519 --> 00:09:29.120 She didn't ask, she didn't request. 00:09:29.200 --> 00:09:30.320 It is a demand. 00:09:30.559 --> 00:09:31.679 But Joseph refused. 00:09:31.840 --> 00:09:35.039 Look, he told her, My master trusts me with everything in his entire household. 00:09:35.200 --> 00:09:37.120 No one here has more authority than I do. 00:09:37.360 --> 00:09:40.240 He's held back nothing from me except you, because you are his wife. 00:09:40.320 --> 00:09:41.679 How could I do such a wicked thing? 00:09:41.759 --> 00:09:43.519 It would be a great sin against God. 00:09:43.759 --> 00:09:49.840 She kept putting pressure on Joseph day after day, but he refused to sleep with her, and he kept out of her way as much as possible. 00:09:50.000 --> 00:09:53.360 One day, however, no one else was around when he went in to do his work. 00:09:53.519 --> 00:09:57.120 She came, she grabbed him by his cloak, demanding, Come on, sleep with me. 00:09:57.279 --> 00:10:02.320 Joseph tore himself away, but left his cloak in her hand as he ran from the house. 00:10:02.559 --> 00:10:05.440 So Joseph has character. 00:10:05.759 --> 00:10:08.080 Like it, I'm that's a lot of character. 00:10:08.320 --> 00:10:09.440 That's resilience. 00:10:09.679 --> 00:10:16.080 He is so committed to God, so committed to doing the right thing, that he resists that temptation even when it's risky for him. 00:10:16.159 --> 00:10:22.159 I mean, she literally has his clothes in her hand and he runs away so fast that the clothes stay behind. 00:10:22.799 --> 00:10:27.200 Like he's a man of character, he's a dreamer, he has character, he has wisdom. 00:10:27.440 --> 00:10:35.279 This doesn't work out well for Joseph in the short term because she gets so angry that he has refused her that she accuses him of rape. 00:10:35.440 --> 00:10:40.240 And she uses the fact that she has his clothing as evidence, and so he's thrown in prison. 00:10:40.480 --> 00:10:44.399 And while he's in Um so while he's in prison, these men are there, and and he interprets their dreams and it proves true. 00:11:15.840 --> 00:11:24.240 And so years later, Pharaoh has this dream, and it's a really frightening dream, and one of these guys who's back in the palace realizes, oh, I know someone who can interpret your dream. 00:11:24.399 --> 00:11:26.320 And so Pharaoh summons Joseph. 00:11:26.480 --> 00:11:36.399 Joseph interprets his dream, and it's basically this warning saying, Hey, uh, there's about to be this massive famine, and everyone's gonna starve unless we take action now and we prepare for it. 00:11:36.480 --> 00:11:38.480 And so this is what happens. 00:11:38.799 --> 00:11:43.759 Genesis chapter 41, after he interprets Pharaoh's dreams, it says, Therefore, Joseph speaks. 00:11:43.919 --> 00:11:48.000 Pharaoh should find an intelligent and wise man and put him in charge of the entire land of Egypt. 00:11:48.159 --> 00:11:54.399 Pharaoh should appoint supervisors over the land and let them collect one-fifth of all the crops during the seven good years that are coming. 00:11:54.639 --> 00:12:02.960 Have them gather all the food produced in the good years that are just ahead, bring it to Pharaoh's storehouses, store it away, and guard it so there will be food in the cities. 00:12:03.120 --> 00:12:06.960 That way there will be enough to eat when the seven years of famine comes to the land of Egypt. 00:12:07.120 --> 00:12:09.519 Otherwise, this famine will destroy the land. 00:12:09.759 --> 00:12:13.440 Joseph's suggestions were well received by Pharaoh and Pharaoh said to Joseph, Since God has revealed the meaning of the dreams to you, clearly no one else is as intelligent or as wise as you are. 00:12:26.799 --> 00:12:30.159 You will be in charge of my court, and all my people will take orders from you. 00:12:30.320 --> 00:12:34.320 Only I, sitting on my throne, will have a rank higher than yours. 00:12:35.039 --> 00:12:45.919 So Joseph is a dreamer, he has character, he has self-control, he's a man who has clear talent, he's handsome and well built, that's a plus. 00:12:46.480 --> 00:12:57.039 And he happens to be so wise that Pharaoh says, You are the wisest man in this kingdom, and I'm gonna make you in charge of everyone but me, and you'll be the one that runs things in Egypt. 00:12:57.200 --> 00:12:58.799 Joseph is a superstar. 00:12:58.879 --> 00:13:00.639 So here we we finally have someone. 00:13:00.799 --> 00:13:02.399 We finally have someone who fits the bill. 00:13:02.480 --> 00:13:08.000 God has made this promise to Abraham I'm gonna bless the whole world through you, through your family, I'm gonna bless everybody. 00:13:08.159 --> 00:13:15.279 I'm gonna I'm gonna bring myself into this world, reveal myself to the world, and surely Joseph is the guy because who could be better than him? 00:13:15.519 --> 00:13:24.399 But oddly enough, Joseph isn't the son that the promise of God actually goes through. 00:13:58.559 Years later, after Israel has become a nation, they have a split. 00:13:58.799 --> 00:14:09.279 And they've really gone away from following God, and the part of Israel that no longer worships God, and they started worshiping all these idols, they're not being faithful to God at all, they they remain called Israel. 00:14:09.360 --> 00:14:17.679 But the part of Israel that splits off and stays faithful to God longer, that nation is called Judah. 00:14:17.919 --> 00:14:24.480 In fact, the Jewish faith is also known as Judaism, which comes from Judah's name. 00:14:24.559 --> 00:14:30.480 So Judah's name, Judah's apparently so important, his name becomes synonymous with the worship of God. 00:14:30.720 --> 00:14:40.159 It's not Joseph, this amazing superstar that's the one --> 00:15:00.799 The very first moment we have Judah step into the story is actually the moment that Joseph is about to be killed by his brothers. 00:15:00.960 --> 00:15:07.360 They've kidnapped him, they're hiding him in basically like a deep well, they're figuring out what they're gonna do with him, and they want to kill him. 00:15:07.440 --> 00:15:10.639 And this is where we see Judah step up his oldest son has married a woman named Tamar. 00:16:22.960 --> 00:16:25.279 But then his son has died, and they don't have any kids. 00:16:25.360 --> 00:16:34.799 And in their culture, and this is again, we're talking ancient culture, 3,000 plus years ago, really messy, really weird, and sometimes we read things, we're like, that's ugh, and just be grateful that you don't live back then.
