so this letter is called Romans, and it just so happens that we're in Romans chapter 13, which is all about the relationship between God and the government, and how do we as Jesus followers engage with that when very often the values and the way that sort of the governments of this world operate are very, very different, if not the polar opposite of the values that Jesus has. 00:00:43.840 --> week we just sort of started by saying this hey, let's let it be about Jesus, not politics. 00:00:54.799 --> 00:01:03.280 Jesus was very, very adamant and clear that what he was doing in this world, the movement he was starting, he called that his kingdom. 00:01:03.359 --> 00:01:06.879 That was language that the people in his day would really get behind and understand. 00:01:07.120 --> 00:01:10.560 The movement that Jesus was starting was not of this world. 00:01:10.959 --> 00:01:13.200 It was not of this world. 00:01:13.359 --> 00:01:18.480 Meaning he wasn't gonna be using the normal channels of change that we see happen in this world. 00:01:18.560 --> 00:01:22.319 It wasn't gonna be political, it wasn't gonna be military, it wasn't by force. 00:01:22.480 --> 00:01:24.000 He was doing something completely different. 00:01:24.079 --> 00:01:40.000 And it caught everybody by surprise because all the people in this day imagined that this figure they were waiting for, they called it their Messiah, that the Messiah was gonna come and change the world, but was definitely gonna do it by means of politics, by means of military force. 00:01:40.079 --> 00:01:45.359 And so here comes Jesus, and he's clearly showing like some strong signs of being the Messiah. 00:01:45.519 --> 00:01:52.079 You know, like people are being healed of diseases, dead people are being raised, like people are like, I think he might be important. 00:01:52.719 --> 00:02:08.000 You know, maybe he's the Messiah, and so they're kind of waiting for him to take political authority and power, to really put some might behind his ministry, and he just avoids that every single time he's given the chance. 00:02:08.400 --> 00:02:14.319 Because he made it clear that his kingdom is not of this about politics, and it's not just the politics in America, and it's not just the politics in the world today, it's pretty much all throughout history. 00:02:28.560 --> 00:02:33.280 The political anytime there's ever a story that helps us see sort of inside a little bit deeper into the way the political systems of the world work, we're like, gross. 00:04:45.199 --> 00:04:46.079 It's worse. want it, I don't need it. 00:05:12.959 --> 00:05:23.519 And he started a movement outside of politics that, by the way, the most powerful political systems that have ever existed on the planet tried politics is something we can't avoid. 00:05:36.959 --> 00:05:43.839 I mean, even though Jesus bypassed it as he was changing the world his way, politics still affected him. 00:05:45.439 --> 00:05:48.319 Politics affect all of us, the government affects all of us. 00:05:48.480 --> 00:05:54.319 It's kind of like this: I have four kids at home, and I talk about that pretty often, and they definitely affect my life, for sure. 00:05:54.480 --> 00:05:56.319 But I affect theirs too. 00:05:57.360 --> 00:06:03.360 Like they live under my authority, and so the decisions that I make have major consequences for their lives. 00:06:03.519 --> 00:06:07.519 I can make decisions that that bless them, that help them prosper and thrive. 00:06:07.680 --> 00:06:16.639 In one moment, I could make a decision as their father that could completely change the trajectory of their lives and make their lives so much more difficult. 00:06:17.839 --> 00:06:25.519 And my kids are at this point now, or the oldest, occasionally look at me and make it very clear that they think I'm stupid and don't agree with the decisions that I'm making. 00:06:25.759 --> 00:06:28.399 I'm just glad they can't vote me how I engage with the government. 00:06:36.160 --> 00:06:44.000 Like, like it's an authority over me, it makes decisions that affect me, and very often I look at the government and be like, y'all are four to eight years, right? 00:06:51.759 --> 00:06:59.279 Like, maybe right now the person you voted for is in power, and you're like, yeah, but that if that's true, that means that a few years ago you were like, it's all burning down. 00:06:59.439 --> 00:07:03.120 And if it's the opposite of that, that means that like right now, you're like, it's all burning down. 00:07:03.199 --> 00:07:04.720 That's just the way it works. 00:07:05.040 --> 00:07:10.079 And we put our hope and trust in the politics of the world, we feel frustration, angst, and anger. 00:07:10.240 --> 00:07:11.759 It is not with that in mind, we're gonna jump into Romans chapter 13, because Romans chapter 13 is gonna help us do two really important things. 00:07:26.240 --> 00:07:29.759 And I just want you guys to know you who are watching from home, you'll need it with this one because there's no way for us to do all of this at once. 00:07:46.959 --> 00:07:52.639 So we're gonna do two things via Romans 13 when it comes to us, the government, God, all this stuff. 00:07:52.959 --> 00:07:56.319 We're gonna try to understand and engage. 00:07:57.279 --> 00:08:00.079 We need to understand how this really works. 00:08:00.399 --> 00:08:04.399 How does government and God and us, how does all that really work? 00:08:04.560 --> 00:08:08.319 And then in light of that, how do we engage or not engage? 00:08:08.480 1 through 7. 00:08:15.199 --> 00:08:18.560 Paul wrote, everyone must submit to governing authorities. 00:08:18.639 --> 00:08:21.040 That is my least favorite statement in the Bible. 00:08:22.319 --> 00:08:23.439 He was not an American. 00:08:23.600 --> 00:08:24.399 Let's just go there. 00:08:24.560 --> 00:08:31.040 Like it, like, no, we don't, you know, that's everyone must submit to governing authorities, for all authority comes from God. 00:08:31.279 --> 00:08:40.639 And those in positions of authority have been placed there by God, so anyone who rebels against authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and they will be punished. 00:08:40.960 --> 00:08:46.480 For the authorities do not strike fear in people who are doing right, but in those who are doing wrong. authorities are God's servants, sent for your good. 00:08:54.960 --> 00:08:58.960 But if you are doing wrong, of course you should be afraid, for they have the power to punish you. 00:08:59.039 --> 00:09:02.720 They are God's servants, sent for the very purpose of punishing those who do what is wrong. 00:09:02.799 --> 00:09:08.480 So you must submit to them not only to avoid punishment, but also and they will be punished. 00:09:55.120 --> 00:10:11.759 Now, when I look at the world and the conversations that I have with people, the things I see on social media, it's obvious that many people are so constantly fired up, angry, upset, worried about what's happening politically, what's happening in the world, there's so many things to get fired up about. 00:10:11.840 --> 00:10:14.240 Maybe you're someone who kind of stays out of all of that. 00:10:14.399 --> 00:10:18.320 And if that's you, then like that's not a bad path to take, you know? 00:10:18.559 --> 00:10:22.159 But life has also shown me that eventually it kind of hits home for all of us. 00:10:22.480 --> 00:10:28.399 Eventually, the decisions of the people and authority in the world, it hits home for all of us, and it can lead you to this place of constant frustration. 00:10:28.480 --> 00:10:41.600 But if there's one thing that can cure you of that, if there's one thing that can take away that angst and that frustration and the worry and the stress and the strife, it's it's understanding a very basic principle that this puts plainly. 00:10:41.919 --> 00:10:44.159 God is over government. 00:10:45.279 --> 00:10:46.799 And we can forget that. 00:10:47.039 --> 00:10:57.200 Especially, I would say, in our political system, that's a democracy where we get to vote and we actually have some say, that that isn't really how it's been for most of human history, pretty much anywhere. 00:10:57.679 --> 00:11:06.320 But for us, I think it's especially easy to forget the fact that, yeah, even though we vote, even though we have a say, God is over all of it. 00:11:07.519 --> 00:11:14.080 And when we live remembering that, no matter how things look, no matter how it feels, God is over it. 00:11:14.799 --> understand part. 00:11:21.679 --> 00:11:30.639 Once we understand these truths and we really sink our teeth into them and maybe let them change the way we think a little bit, then we're at a place is centuries before Jesus, and at this point in history, the nation of Israel has never had a king. 00:12:13.519 --> 00:12:22.960 They've had men and women who had very close relationships with God, men and women who who God spoke to, and they would lead the people. 00:12:23.519 --> 00:12:29.440 And they weren't people that had authority, they didn't have like a bloodline, and they would pass their authority on to their children. 00:12:29.679 --> 00:12:35.279 They weren't in authority because the people had chosen them, they weren't in authority because they were just born into the right family. 00:12:35.360 --> 00:12:39.679 They were in authority because God had put them there and they listened to God. 00:12:40.559 --> 00:12:41.919 It's kind of a cool concept. 00:12:42.000 --> 00:12:45.279 But there came a time when the people of Israel said, We don't like this. 00:12:45.519 --> 00:13:02.879 Because they looked around and all the other nations in the world had kings, and they were already this kind of strange people who didn't have giant statues of the God they worshipped, and all these other nations had tons and tons of God, and they've got this one invisible God, and they don't know what he looks like, and all these other nations have kings and queens, and they don't have one. 00:13:03.519 --> 00:13:06.399 And they they just wanted to be like everybody else. 00:13:06.720 --> 00:13:11.279 Sometimes, at the end of the day, that is like the driving force behind some of our worst decisions in life. 00:13:11.360 --> 00:13:13.440 I just want to be like everybody else. 00:13:13.679 --> 00:13:15.519 And so they decided we want a king. 00:13:15.759 --> 00:13:20.879 And they went to Samuel, who was the prophet that was leading them at the time, and said, We want a king. 00:13:21.919 --> 00:13:26.320 And so, on behalf of God, Samuel says this to the people. 00:13:26.559 --> 00:13:27.679 Well, let's just go back a little bit. 00:13:27.840 --> 00:13:28.720 1 Samuel chapter 8. 00:13:28.799 --> 00:13:33.279 It says, Samuel passed on the Lord's warning to the people who were asking him for a king. 00:13:33.440 --> 00:13:35.039 He went to God about it, God gave him this warning. 00:13:35.120 --> 00:13:36.960 So Samuel's speaking on behalf of God here. 00:13:37.200 --> 00:13:39.440 This is how a king will reign over you. 00:13:39.679 --> 00:13:44.639 The king will draft your sons and assign them to his chariots and his charioteers, making them run before his chariots. 00:13:44.720 --> 00:13:52.080 Some will be generals and captains in his army, some will be forced to plow in his fields and harvest his crops, and some will make his weapons and chariot equipment. 00:13:52.240 --> 00:13:55.679 The king will take your daughters from you and force them to cook and bake and make perfumes for him. 00:13:55.840 --> 00:14:00.720 He will take away the best of your fields and your vineyards and your olive groves and give them to his own officials. 00:14:00.879 --> 00:14:05.279 He will take a tenth of your grain and your grape harvest and distribute it among his officers and attendants. 00:14:05.440 --> 00:14:11.519 He will take your male and female slaves, or servants in their world, and demand the finest of your cattle and donkeys for his own use. 00:14:11.679 --> 00:14:15.519 He will demand a tenth of your flocks, and you will be his slaves. 00:14:15.759 --> 00:14:20.480 When that day comes, you will beg for relief from this king that you're demanding, but the Lord will not help you. 00:14:20.639 --> 00:14:24.399 But the people refused to listen to Samuel's warning, even so we still want a king, they said. 00:14:24.559 --> 00:14:26.720 We want to be like the nations around us. 00:14:26.960 --> 00:14:29.200 Our king will judge us and lead us into battle. 00:14:29.360 --> 00:14:34.159 And so Samuel repeated to the Lord what the people have said, and the Lord replied, Do as they say, and give them a king. 00:14:34.320 --> 00:14:40.639 And then Samuel agreed and sent the people home, and everything goes really poorly after that, for the most part, in their story. 00:14:43.759 --> 00:14:46.240 The warning to us might be a little bit different, right? 00:14:46.399 --> 00:14:49.600 God understanding how our government works, he might say, Here's the way the government's gonna go. 00:14:49.679 --> 00:15:00.559 It's gonna be empty promises, it's gonna be scandal upon scandal, it's gonna be hypocrisy, it's gonna be people just solidifying their own power while pretending to really care about the needs of people. 00:15:00.720 --> 00:15:02.879 But the point is that God gets it. 00:15:03.519 --> 00:15:04.559 He understands government. 00:15:04.639 --> 00:15:07.120 I mean, he tells the people, look, here's the way this is gonna go. 00:15:07.600 --> 00:15:10.159 Here's what's gonna happen, and what he says happens, happens. 00:15:10.240 --> 00:15:11.600 And the same is true today. need to have peace, knowing that God gets it. 00:15:27.759 --> 00:15:29.919 But God doesn't just understand government. 00:15:30.080 --> 00:15:37.679 What we need to understand is that God uses government, God uses the governments of this world. 00:15:38.240 --> 00:15:43.200 Whether they like it or not, they ultimately serve his purposes. 00:15:44.000 --> 00:15:49.279 So for example, Jeremiah chapter 27, verse 6. 00:15:50.399 --> 00:15:58.960 Now I will give your countries to King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon, who is my servant, and I've put everything, even the wild animals, under his control. 00:15:59.759 --> 00:16:05.120 If you don't know the context of this, Nebuchadnezzar was a Babylonian king, and Babylon actually conquers Israel. 00:16:06.080 --> 00:16:10.799 And God says to the prophet Jeremiah, Yeah, I'm doing this. 00:16:10.879 --> 00:16:17.679 I'm giving Nebuchadnezzar, my servant, this power and these victories. 00:16:18.320 --> 00:16:23.759 Now, if you know the story of Nebuchadnezzar, you wouldn't read his story and be like, that man is a servant of God. 00:16:24.879 --> 00:16:29.039 I mean, there's a few moments where you're like, hey, Nebuchadnezzar, you get it, good stuff. 00:16:29.200 --> 00:16:31.279 But most of the time, uh, not at all. 00:16:31.440 --> 00:16:40.799 In fact, there's this one time where Nebuchadnezzar has a giant statue built of himself, and it's made out of gold, and then he tells people to bow down and worship it, and if they don't, they just get thrown into a fire. 00:16:40.879 --> 00:16:43.919 You know, just the normal sort of king stuff. 00:16:44.879 --> 00:16:48.240 Not exactly what we would consider to be a faithful servant to God. 00:16:48.320 --> 00:16:51.679 So why does God call Nebuchadnezzar his servant? 00:16:51.919 --> 00:17:02.480 Because, like it or not, even when they're unaware of it, the kingdoms and the governments of this world are going to ultimately serve the purposes of God. 00:17:03.759 --> 00:17:05.599 Because God is over everything. 00:17:06.640 --> 00:17:13.599 We see another story about this in Isaiah chapter 44. 00:17:14.880 --> 00:17:17.519 He says, I carry out the predictions of my prophets. 00:17:17.680 --> 00:17:23.839 By them I say to Jerusalem, people will live here again, and to the towns of Judah, you will be rebuilt, I will restore all your ruins. 00:17:24.000 --> 00:17:27.359 At this point in time, Israel has been conquered by the Babylonians. 00:17:27.599 --> 00:17:30.240 This happens uh several centuries before Jesus. 00:17:30.400 --> 00:17:33.279 And so they're no longer, most of their people have been sent away. 00:17:33.519 --> 00:17:40.640 They're not allowed to live in their homeland, their city has been destroyed, and their prophets are now saying things like, There's a day coming when we will return. 00:17:40.880 --> 00:17:48.960 In fact, uh, shortly after, you know that verse if some of you like love verse of the day kind of things, where uh I know the plans I have for you, says the Lord. 00:17:49.039 --> 00:17:49.119 Yeah. 00:17:49.359 --> 00:17:51.680 Plans to prosper you, to give you a future and a hope. 00:17:51.920 -->
