to talk about Jesus' very first birthday party, but we're gonna kind of expand the definition of what we'd call a party. 00:02:20.560 --> 00:02:25.520 Instead of that uh after dinner time, it's gonna be the early moments of Jesus' life. 00:02:25.680 --> 00:02:34.719 Because if this is the most important party in history, I know that you'd probably want to be there and I'd want to be there as well. mask, and so I'm gonna take mine off as we look at the very first person that's included at this party. 00:03:17.919 --> 00:03:21.680 The very first person to be included at this party is the included in this important moment in history is a young teenager named Mary. 00:03:34.240 --> 00:03:42.800 We believe she was a young teenager because in her culture, it was very, very normal to be engaged at an age as young as 13. 00:03:43.039 --> 00:03:57.360 And so for those of us in the room that are married, and those of us that are engaged or planning on being married soon, we know the turmoil, the hope, the anticipation, the nerves that come with merging your life with another person. 00:03:57.599 --> 00:04:02.400 Now imagine all of that on top of having just stepped out of childhood. 00:04:02.639 --> 00:04:08.960 And that's where Mary finds herself as her life takes a very drastic turn. 00:04:09.199 --> 00:04:10.560 And so let's see what happens. 00:04:10.719 --> 00:04:12.159 This is in Luke chapter one. 00:04:12.719 --> 00:04:18.800 God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a village in Galilee, to a virgin named Mary. 00:04:19.040 --> 00:04:24.319 She was engaged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of King David. 00:04:24.560 --> 00:04:29.360 Gabriel appeared to her and said, Greetings, favored woman, the Lord is with you. 00:04:29.920 --> 00:04:36.160 Confused and disturbed, Mary tried to think of what the angel could mean. 00:04:36.399 --> 00:04:40.560 Don't be afraid, Mary, the angel told her, for you have found favor with God. 00:04:40.800 --> 00:04:44.480 You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you will name him Jesus. 00:04:44.639 --> 00:04:48.240 He will be very great, and he will be called the Son of the Most age. 00:05:17.759 --> 00:05:25.920 People used to say that she was barren, but she conceived a son and is now in her sixth month, for the Lord or the word of the God will never fail. 00:05:26.720 --> this party is a teenager, and it this inclusion comes with a huge responsibility. 00:05:46.399 --> 00:05:53.040 It's a responsibility that won't only just change her life, but it'll change the life of her entire community, the Jewish people. 00:05:53.279 --> 00:06:04.560 This is the chosen one that the Jews have been waiting for since as long as anybody can remember, and God trusts a teenager with 00:08:38.879 --> 00:08:41.600 Just read through the Old Testament. 00:08:41.679 --> 00:08:43.600 Uh he chose Mary for this task. 00:08:43.679 --> 00:08:49.120 Uh some of Jesus' very first disciples, we believe, were young teenagers. 00:08:49.519 --> 00:08:57.519 See, if we understand the people at the party, we'll understand the heart of the host, and it's very obvious that God has a heart for was born. 00:09:57.120 --> 00:10:00.639 His mother, Mary, was engaged to be married to Joseph. 00:10:00.960 --> 00:10:07.279 But before the marriage took place, while she was still a virgin, she became pregnant through the power of the Holy Spirit. 00:10:07.519 --> 00:10:14.639 Joseph, to whom she was engaged, was a righteous man and did not want to shame her publicly. 00:10:15.039 --> 00:10:17.759 So he decided to break the engagement quietly. 00:10:17.919 --> 00:10:21.519 As he considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream. 00:10:21.759 --> 00:10:27.120 Joseph, son of David, the angel said, Do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife. 00:10:27.360 --> 00:10:37.600 For the child within her was conceived by the Holy Spirit, and she will have a son, and you're to name him Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins. 00:10:38.000 --> 00:10:42.000 All of this occurred to fulfill the Lord's message through his prophet. 00:10:42.240 --> 00:10:52.080 Look, the virgin will conceive a child, she will give birth to a son, and they will call him Emmanuel, which means God is with us. 00:10:52.399 --> 00:10:58.080 When Joseph woke up, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded and took Mary as his wife. 00:10:58.799 --> 00:11:01.919 Joseph is average, yes. 00:11:02.480 --> 00:11:04.639 He's a normal guy. 00:11:05.440 --> 00:11:08.720 But when the challenge faces him, he does the right thing. 00:11:08.879 --> 00:11:14.320 He doesn't want to disgrace her publicly, and he's obedient to the Lord. 00:11:15.200 --> 00:11:23.759 Joseph is just going about his business when all of this starts happening to him, but he also steps up in faith. 00:11:24.240 --> 00:11:30.080 If you feel like a normal person, you're like, my life doesn't look we take our metaphorical attention and took it, put it to the metaphorical corner of the room, we'll see that another crowd is at this party. 00:12:19.200 --> 00:12:22.480 And it's crowd you might not feel super comfortable being around. 00:12:22.639 --> 00:12:27.120 You might not necessarily feel the safest because it's the rough crowd. 00:12:27.360 --> 00:12:32.240 The rough crowd is here at the party, and you're kind of like, ugh, they're here. 00:12:32.399 --> 00:12:36.559 And I call them the rough crowd because they are rough around the edges. 00:12:36.799 --> 00:12:38.000 This is the shepherds. 00:12:38.720 --> 00:12:41.600 Shepherding is a rough job. 00:12:42.320 --> 00:12:54.720 You spend your life outdoors with animals, often spending late nights protecting your flock and your livelihood against violent attacks from beasts. 00:12:55.039 --> 00:13:00.080 I'm sure these shepherds have at least a few stories to tell. 00:13:00.320 --> 00:13:10.080 But their life is rough, and on top of all of that, it would be nearly impossible to live under the Jewish cleanliness laws as a shepherd. 00:13:10.320 --> 00:13:18.159 You come into contact with animal waste, with blood, uh, with all sorts of things on your outdoor wilderness adventures. 00:13:18.559 --> 00:13:26.879 And so the Jewish insiders would have often seen this group of people as unclean, untrustworthy, and on the outside. 00:13:27.919 --> 00:13:37.519 But it's these rough people, this rough crowd, that God decides to include at the party. 00:13:37.919 --> 00:13:39.519 Luke chapter 2. 00:13:39.759 --> 00:13:45.679 That night there were shepherds staying in the fields nearby, guarding their flocks of sheep. 00:13:45.919 --> 00:13:52.320 Suddenly an angel of the Lord appeared among them, and the radiance of the Lord's glory surrounded them. 00:13:52.559 --> 00:13:53.919 They are terrified. 00:13:54.159 --> 00:13:57.360 But the angel reassured them: Don't be afraid, he said. 00:13:57.600 --> 00:14:01.519 I bring you good news that will bring great joy to all people. 00:14:01.840 --> 00:14:02.639 The Savior. 00:14:03.120 --> 00:14:09.039 Yes, the Messiah, the Lord, has been born today in 00:15:01.039 After seeing him, the shepherds told everyone what had happened and what the angel had said to them about this child. 00:15:01.200 --> 00:15:04.480 All who heard the shepherd's story were astonished. 00:15:04.559 --> 00:15:08.480 But Mary kept all of these things in her heart and thought about them often. 00:15:08.720 --> 00:15:15.600 The shepherds went back to their flocks, glorifying Know that you're included at this party. 00:17:23.920 --> 00:17:33.039 But if the shepherds are the, you know, kind of the outsiders, they're rough around the edges, this next group is the obvious open the door, the record scratch happens, everybody goes silent to look at them, and they are just shocked as to why they're here. 00:17:48.400 --> 00:17:50.240 This next group is the magi. names for this group of people, and I think that's because if we truly understood when we opened up our Bible, who the magi were, we would be offended. 00:18:08.559 --> 00:18:09.920 We would be That's how we'd feel if we truly understood who these people were. 00:18:21.839 --> 00:18:24.160 But let's see how they got there to start with. 00:18:24.400 --> 00:18:25.599 Matthew chapter 2. 00:18:25.839 --> 00:18:29.920 Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea during the reign of King Herod. 00:18:30.079 --> 00:18:37.839 About that time, some wise men from eastern lands arrived in Jerusalem, asking, where's the newborn king of the Jews? 00:18:38.079 --> 00:18:41.839 We saw his star as it rose, and we have come to worship him. 00:18:43.599 --> 00:18:49.759 King Herod was deeply disturbed when he heard this, as was everyone in Jerusalem. 00:18:49.839 --> 00:18:54.960 And if you know the story, it continues, and Herod tries to use them to kill baby Jesus. 00:18:55.039 --> 00:18:56.799 It's this whole thing. 00:18:57.119 --> 00:19:04.640 But these guys are so obviously outsiders that when they step into the holy city of Jerusalem, a report goes straight to the king. 00:19:04.799 --> pagan Babylon, which is like the exact antithesis of the city of God. 00:19:26.720 --> 00:19:36.559 We were in King Nebuchadnezzar's court, and these court magicians are trying to comfort the king and interpret a dream that's been troubling him. 00:19:37.119 --> 00:19:39.200 And they're not able to do it. 00:19:39.440 --> 00:19:48.880 And they're not able to do it because they're trying to conjure from their own strength and their own intellect and their own power something that can only be managed by God. 00:19:49.200 --> 00:19:56.400 And even when these court magicians do end up doing
