The kingdom of heaven is like a merchant who is on the lookout for a pearl of great price. 00:05:08.399 --> 00:05:13.040 You see him constantly talking about the kingdom, the kingdom, the kingdom. 00:05:32.480 But my kingdom is not of this world. 00:05:32.800 --> 00:05:35.199 Jesus is a king and he has a kingdom. 00:05:35.279 --> 00:05:38.800 And if we call ourselves Jesus' followers, we're 00:07:13.199 Because how can I live effectively in his kingdom if I don't get the way his kingdom works? 00:07:13.279 --> 00:07:19.120 And look, Jesus spent a lot of time teaching about his kingdom go through this together for the next few months. 00:07:28.480 --> 00:07:38.319 Because I'll say this, I believe that a lot of the things that we struggle with as Jesus followers, those of us who say we're Jesus followers, the things that we struggle with often are the result of misplaced allegiance. 00:07:39.600 --> 00:07:44.800 Because if I place my allegiance in anything less than Jesus, I'm 00:07:56.000 --> 00:08:07.199 If every single time I want something and it contrasts with what Jesus would want for me, but I choose what I want over what he wants, that means I'm not living as though wives he executed, that's right. 00:10:01.360 --> 00:10:03.279 And then the sixth one outlived him. 00:10:03.360 --> 00:10:06.559 And so being a wife of Henry VIII was not an enjoyable experience. woman named Catherine, he wanted to divorce her so he could marry this other woman named Anne Boleyn. 00:10:16.639 --> 00:10:18.320 You might be familiar with this story. 00:10:18.559 --> 00:10:23.759 The problem was England was was part of the Catholic Church, just like every other nation in Europe. 00:10:23.840 --> 00:10:29.039 And the Pope wouldn't let Henry divorce Catherine because there were no grounds for divorce. 00:10:29.120 --> 00:10:34.159 And so Henry wants to divorce Catherine, he's the king, he wants to marry Anne, and the Pope says, no, you can't do that. 00:10:34.240 --> 00:10:37.039 And so Henry says, All right, we just won't be Catholic anymore. 00:10:37.120 --> 00:10:45.840 And so he actually created an entirely different church called the Church of England, made would use to describe himself. 00:13:55.600 --> 00:14:00.639 Well, they replied, some say John the Baptist, some say Elijah, others say Jeremiah or one of the other prophets. 00:14:00.799 --> giant in the story of Scripture, this incredible prophet who did who did miracles and and all kinds of crazy things. 00:15:00.559 --> 00:15:04.480 And people are saying that Jesus must be Elijah. of man. 00:17:52.319 --> 00:17:57.440 Now, some people have said, some scholars have said, the reason Jesus called himself son of man was because he wanted to emphasize his humanity. 00:17:57.599 --> hear forbidden fruit, it like hyperlinks you to the story of the Garden of Eden. 00:19:06.000 --> 00:19:10.079 Well, the phrase Son of Man, it was one of those phrases, it was a loaded phrase. 00:19:10.240 --> 00:19:12.400 And it came from the prophet Daniel. 00:19:12.720 --> 00:19:18.720 Daniel's one of the foremost prophets in the Old Testament who actually prophesied about the coming Messiah. 00:19:19.039 --> 00:19:22.319 He had visions, and in Daniel chapter 7, he has this really intense vision. 00:19:22.400 --> 00:19:30.000 And it's a vision about the future, but it includes in the vision at the very end this interesting character called a son of man. 00:19:30.240 --> 00:19:32.160 Daniel chapter 7, verse 13. 00:19:32.400 --> 00:19:39.839 He writes, As my vision continued that night, I saw someone like a son of man coming with the clouds of heaven. 00:19:40.160 --> 00:19:43.359 He approached the ancient one and was led into his presence. 00:19:43.440 --> 00:19:50.799 He was given authority, honor, and sovereignty over all the nations of the world, so that the people of every race and nation and language would obey him. 00:19:50.960 --> 00:19:55.440 His rule is eternal, it will never end, his kingdom will never be destroyed. 00:19:55.599 --> 00:20:03.759 When Jesus says, I'm the Son of Man, that is what everyone around him would have thought about. example, in Mark chapter 13, he's prophesying about a different time, and Jesus says, Then everyone will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds with power and glory. 00:20:22.000 --> 00:20:27.440 And he will send out his angels to gather his chosen ones from all over the world, from the farthest ends of the earth and heaven. 00:20:27.680 --> 00:20:31.680 You see the coming on the clouds, same exact language that Daniel uses. 00:20:32.079 --> 00:20:44.960 When Jesus is resurrected, right before he gives us the great commission where he tells us to go and baptize all nations in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, Jesus says, I have been given all authority in heaven and on earth. 00:20:46.319 --> 00:20:52.880 Daniel 7, 14, he was given authority, honor, and sovereignty over all the nations of the world. 00:20:53.839 --> 00:21:00.880 So when Jesus uses this phrase, Son of Man, he's hyperlinking back to that vision. 00:21:01.759 --> 00:21:03.200 And the implications.
