looking at Ephesians chapter 1, verses 3 through 14. 00:05:15.360 --> 00:05:16.319 Just going straight through it. 00:05:16.399 --> 00:05:18.160 We're actually going through the whole book of Ephesians this year. 00:05:18.240 --> 00:05:22.720 And so in this section, Paul, the author, talks about the blessings that we have from God. 00:05:22.879 --> 00:05:24.319 He calls them spiritual blessings. 00:05:24.560 --> 00:05:33.519 The very first verse, Ephesians 1.3, he says, Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ. 00:05:33.680 --> 00:05:36.800 So blessed be God who has blessed us with blessings. 00:05:37.199 --> 00:05:40.959 But not just any blessings, spiritual blessings. 00:05:41.120 --> 00:05:46.240 And I'll be honest with you, like, like as we've gone through this series, part of me has been like, oh Lord, is this practical enough? 00:05:46.560 --> 00:05:49.279 Like, I want people to walk away going, like, yeah, I can do something with this. 00:05:49.360 --> 00:05:50.959 And we're talking about all these spiritual things. 00:05:51.040 --> 00:05:55.839 We've should be more practical. 00:05:59.839 --> 00:06:05.439 Because there's this big push right now in church culture, and actually in most ways it's really good, that you gotta make it practical. --> 00:06:17.680 That we begin to believe that what is spiritual is not practical. 00:06:18.319 --> 00:06:27.199 And so we focus on the practical things at the expense of what's spiritual because in our minds, that spiritual stuff, it's all hazy, it's it's hard to grab a hold of. 00:06:27.279 --> 00:06:31.600 No, no, no, not that stuff's fine and all, but like let's get down to what's practical. That's why Jesus once asked the question what good is it if a man gains the world but loses his soul? 00:06:44.720 --> 00:06:48.079 There is no part of you more important than your spirit. 00:06:49.199 --> 00:06:51.600 Your body is gonna die one day, and I know that's kind of a downer. 00:06:51.680 --> 00:06:57.360 I shouldn't have said that, but like you will not because you're not a body. 00:06:58.639 --> 00:07:08.079 Your spirit will endure because your spirit is actually who you are, and so if we are spiritual people at our core, there's actually nothing more practical to us than the spirit. 00:07:09.279 --> 00:07:11.360 And by the way, we see this in our world. 00:07:12.879 --> 00:07:13.920 We see this in our world. 00:07:14.160 --> 00:07:20.319 Our world has no answer, no answer for depression, for anxiety. 00:07:20.879 --> 00:07:29.519 Our world has no answer for problems like divorce, for broken homes, for violence. 00:07:30.639 --> 00:07:36.000 It's because our our culture and our world denies the spiritual. 00:07:37.199 --> 00:07:42.160 And so we see children bringing guns to school and shooting each other, and we're like, oh, what laws can we enact to keep this from happening? 00:07:42.240 --> 00:07:45.680 And we should be asking, what's going on in the spirit of our nation? 00:07:46.720 --> 00:07:59.120 There's something going on spiritually, and until we solve that, it doesn't matter what what laws we put in place, nothing will really change. 00:08:00.079 --> 00:08:01.759 We're seeing that happen in the world, by the way. 00:08:01.920 --> I want to really focus on the simple fact that we're told we have been blessed with the Holy Spirit. 00:09:34.320 --> 00:09:37.279 We've been given the Holy Spirit, whom God promised long ago. 00:09:37.440 --> 00:09:40.960 Now, if you study scripture, if you if you open your Bible, you see the Holy Spirit all over it. 00:09:41.120 --> 00:09:45.279 But it's kind of interesting because the Holy Spirit's role grows as you go through the story. 00:09:45.519 --> 00:09:54.639 It's kind of like a television show where there's this recurring character that plays like a small part and they're in it every once in a while, but then all of a sudden in one season they're like one of the main characters. 00:09:54.799 --> 00:09:56.639 That's the Holy Spirit in the Bible. 00:09:56.799 --> 00:10:01.279 In the Old Testament, we see the Holy Spirit like come upon people, but it's kind of few and far between. 00:10:01.360 --> 00:10:02.960 But when he does, it's it's powerful. 00:10:03.039 --> 00:10:12.879 For example, Ezekiel chapter 31, verse 1 says, The Lord said to Moses, Look, I've specially chosen Bezalel, son of Uri, grandson of Hur, of the tribe of Judah. 00:10:12.960 --> 00:10:17.519 I have filled him with the Spirit of God, giving him great wisdom, ability, and expertise in all kinds of crafts. 00:10:17.679 --> 00:10:22.559 This was the man that was supposed to build the tabernacle, the place where the Jewish people would worship at that time. 00:10:22.720 --> 00:10:25.919 And God's like, here's the guy I want to be in charge of this project. 00:10:26.080 --> be familiar with the story of Samson. 00:10:33.519 --> 00:10:37.440 Samson's the dude with the like the long hair and the biceps in the Bible, the strong guy. 00:10:37.679 --> 00:10:46.320 But what you may miss if you read his story, if you haven't read in a while anyway, is every time he performs an act of strength, like some great feat of strength, the Bible says that the Holy Spirit came upon him. 00:10:46.480 --> 00:10:48.639 So it wasn't his own strength. 00:10:48.960 --> 00:10:54.159 It will say, like, and the Holy Spirit came upon Samson, and then he was able to do this crazy thing. 00:10:54.240 --> 00:10:56.159 It wasn't his power, it was the Spirit's power. 00:10:56.320 --> 00:11:00.159 In the Old Testament, we have the prophets, these men that heard from God. 00:11:00.399 --> 00:11:08.080 And the Spirit of God would come into them, and they would be able to converse with God and to see the world through God's eyes, essentially, and speak to the people on behalf of God. 00:11:08.240 --> 00:11:11.919 But the average everyday person had no chance in their mind to be able to talk to God. 00:11:12.000 --> 00:11:14.720 So they were dependent on what the prophets said. As the story goes on, there's this hinge moment, and that hinge moment is Jesus, and Jesus opens us up to the presence of God like no one else ever could. 00:11:36.399 --> 00:11:40.720 Jesus frequently promised the Holy Spirit to his followers in a very certain way, by the way. 00:11:40.960 --> 00:11:48.480 This wasn't like, hey, a few of you might just experience the Holy Spirit in power like those of old did. 00:11:48.559 --> 00:11:49.519 That's not what Jesus said. 00:11:49.600 --> 00:11:51.840 He talks about the Holy Spirit as if it is a certainty. 00:11:51.919 --> 00:11:52.720 Listen to what he says. 00:11:52.879 --> 00:11:54.480 John 14, 17. 00:11:54.720 --> 00:11:58.159 Jesus says, He is the Holy Spirit who leads into all truth. 00:11:58.399 --> 00:12:02.639 The world cannot receive him because it's not looking for him, it doesn't recognize him. 00:12:03.360 --> 00:12:07.120 But you know him because he lives with you now and later will be in you. 00:12:07.279 --> 00:12:13.279 So Jesus is saying to his disciples, hey, you've experienced the Holy Spirit around you, because you've been with me. 00:12:13.519 --> 00:12:16.480 And Jesus was completely empowered by the Holy Spirit. 00:12:16.559 --> 00:12:21.120 He laid his own power aside when he came to earth, but the Holy Spirit is what fueled everything Jesus did. 00:12:21.200 --> 00:12:23.519 And Jesus says, Hey, you've experienced the Holy Spirit around you. 00:12:23.600 --> 00:12:25.919 You're about to have the Holy Spirit in you. 00:12:26.879 --> 00:12:29.200 He says it with certainty. 00:12:29.679 --> way, ask yourself: does this sound impractical? 00:12:38.399 --> 00:12:44.000 Does this sound like some hazy thing that you can't really get your head around, or does this sound insanely practical? 00:12:44.159 --> 00:12:48.480 Because I think when Jesus talks about the Holy Spirit, it sounds like someone describing the features of their iPhone. 00:12:48.720 --> 00:12:50.080 John 14, 26. 00:12:50.639 --> 00:12:54.960 But when the Father sends the advocate as my representative, that is the Holy Spirit, he will teach you everything. 00:12:55.120 --> 00:12:56.960 He will remind you of everything I've told you. 00:12:57.120 --> 00:13:00.559 John 16, 13, when the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all truth. 00:13:00.720 --> 00:13:02.960 He will not speak on his own, but will tell you what he's heard. 00:13:03.120 --> 00:13:04.240 He will tell you about the future. 00:13:04.399 --> 00:13:06.879 He will bring me glory by telling you whatever he receives from me.
