00:00:53.439 One of the amazing things about the Bible, about Scripture, is that it's all about Jesus. 00:00:53.840 --> 00:01:05.599 Like God's an amazing storyteller, even though Jesus doesn't show up in person until you know a little past the halfway point, the whole Old Testament, like the old stuff, it's all hinting at Jesus. 00:01:05.680 --> 00:01:06.799 It's all pointing to Jesus. 00:01:06.879 --> 00:01:12.560 And so when Jesus shows up on the scene, Jesus does things that are very reminiscent of things that have been done before. 00:01:12.719 --> 00:01:18.640 Jesus performs miracles that are very reminiscent of miracles that men like Elijah and Elisha performed. 00:01:18.719 --> 00:01:23.599 And the reason that's the case is because these men were doing things that were foreshadowing Jesus. 00:01:23.760 --> 00:01:33.760 These men were doing things through God that were, we're painting a picture, an early picture, the first brush strokes of who Jesus is, what Jesus when we know Jesus, when we're connected to Jesus, the more we understand Jesus, the more Jesus is at the center core of everything we do, everything we are, that's when life is what it's supposed to chapter 17, and the first thing he does is he challenges a terrible evil king named Ahab. 00:02:32.080 --> 00:02:36.400 He basically throws a gauntlet down and just says, Hey, here's this challenge from God. 00:02:36.479 --> 00:02:38.719 And then the next thing he does is he runs for his life. 00:02:38.879 --> 00:02:42.639 Because that's what you do when you challenge an evil, an evil king. 00:02:42.719 --> 00:02:43.199 You run. 00:02:43.360 --> 00:02:45.120 And God told him to, God told him to flee. 00:02:45.199 --> 00:02:47.199 And so we kind of looked at his journey last week. 00:02:47.280 --> 00:02:48.240 He went from Samaria. 00:02:48.560 --> 00:02:50.080 We actually have a map here, you can see this. 00:02:50.240 --> 00:02:52.960 He went from Samaria, which was the capital city of Israel. 00:02:53.120 --> 00:02:57.840 He goes all the way to this place called Kareth Brook, which was on the east side of the Jordan River. 00:02:57.919 --> 00:03:01.120 And he hangs out there for a while until the brook dries up. 00:03:01.280 --> 00:03:08.240 He has no water, and so he goes next to a place called Zarephath, which is way up in Phoenicia, not even in Israel. 00:03:08.319 --> 00:03:12.639 This is the last place that Elijah would ever, ever have thought to go. 00:03:12.960 --> 00:03:14.319 And that's where we're at in the story today. 00:03:14.400 --> 00:03:18.240 So we're going to go ahead and pick it up in 1 Kings chapter 17, verse 8. 00:03:18.479 --> 00:03:24.319 Then the Lord said to Elijah, Go and live in the village of Zarephath, near the city of Sidon. 00:03:24.479 --> 00:03:26.400 I have instructed a widow there to feed you. 00:03:26.560 --> 00:03:35.120 So he went to Zarephath, and as he arrived at the gates of the village, he saw a widow gathering sticks, and he asked her, Would you please bring me a little cup of water? 00:03:35.360 --> 00:03:38.639 As she was going to get it, he called to her, Bring me a bite of bread too. 00:03:38.879 --> 00:03:50.000 But she said, I swear by the Lord your God that I don't have a single piece of bread in the house, and I have only a handful of flour left in the jar and a little cooking oil in the bottom of the jug. 00:03:50.159 --> 00:03:55.199 I was just gathering a few sticks to cook this last meal, and then my son and I will die. 00:03:55.759 --> 00:04:00.719 So God has sent Elijah to a widow to be provided for. 00:04:00.879 --> 00:04:05.280 God just forgot to provide for the widow so that she could provide for Elijah. 00:04:05.520 --> 00:04:09.759 God forgot to give her what she needed to do what God told Elijah she would do. 00:04:10.000 --> 00:04:15.280 And look, there's moments like this in Scripture all the time, where it looks like God doesn't know what he's doing. 00:04:15.599 --> 00:04:22.879 And you may have lived with faith in God and oftentimes thought to yourself and maybe been brave enough to say it out loud, God, I don't think you know what you're doing. 00:04:22.959 --> 00:04:25.920 It doesn't seem like you're doing what you ought to be doing. 00:04:26.160 --> 00:04:29.600 And when you read the Bible and you come into those moments where you said to her, Don't be afraid. 00:04:44.959 --> 00:04:48.079 Go ahead and do just what you've said, but make a little bread for me first. 00:04:48.240 --> 00:04:51.040 Then use what's left to prepare a meal for yourself and your son. 00:04:51.199 --> 00:04:59.279 For this is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says there will always be flour and olive oil left in your containers until the time when the Lord sends rain and the crops grow again. 00:04:59.519 --> 00:05:04.240 And so she did as Elijah said, and she and Elijah and her family continued to eat for many days. 00:05:04.319 --> 00:05:09.759 There was always enough flour and olive oil left in the containers, just as the Lord had promised through Elijah. 00:05:09.920 --> 00:05:12.160 So Elijah is a very, very bold man. 00:05:12.399 --> 00:05:19.680 Bold enough to challenge a king, bold enough to say to a widow, who says to him, This is all I've got left. 00:05:19.920 --> 00:05:23.759 I'm gonna prepare this food for myself and my son, and then we are going to die. 00:05:23.920 --> 00:05:24.319 This is it. 00:05:24.399 --> 00:05:26.639 We're going to starve to death because this is all we've got. 00:05:26.720 --> 00:05:30.160 And Elijah says, Yeah, yeah, will you just make me a little bit first? 00:05:30.560 --> 00:05:31.279 Before you do that? 00:05:31.439 --> 00:05:33.839 Like, go ahead and do that, but just can I have some? 00:05:35.120 --> 00:05:43.839 And either Elijah and God by extension, because Elijah's just doing what God is telling him to do, either Elijah and God are very callous or they know God wants us to learn through this scripture and other scriptures like this. 00:06:05.600 --> 00:06:12.720 It's a mindset that if we can grab a hold of it, if we can begin to think this way, it not I'll just say this the people I know in my life who live with the least worry, the people I know in my life who live with the least amount of anxiety and fear and worry, this is the mindset that they we have to understand is that God never runs out. 00:06:41.279 --> 00:06:42.240 God never runs out. 00:06:42.319 --> 00:06:44.639 And that's something that Elijah is very confident in. 00:06:44.800 you. 00:06:51.199 --> 00:06:53.199 Because God never runs out. 00:06:53.360 --> 00:06:59.439 This this miracle that Elijah does, that God really does through Elijah, is very, very similar to some miracles that Jesus did. 00:06:59.600 --> 00:07:03.439 Like I said earlier, Elijah, the prophets, they're hinting at Jesus. 00:07:03.680 --> 00:07:08.240 And so Elijah is involved in this miracle Some of you I thought would be more excited about the concept of that. 00:07:14.800 --> 00:07:16.800 But Jesus turned water into wine. 00:07:16.959 --> 00:07:21.839 Jesus fed over 5,000 people multiple times by miraculously multiplying food. 00:07:22.000 --> 00:07:24.720 And it's very important that Jesus did things like that. 00:07:25.120 --> 00:07:35.439 Because it completely and totally took the wind out of the sails of his opponents, the Pharisees, the religious leaders, because they could not say something like, like, oh, well, Jesus, you know, he may be a prophet, but he's no Elijah. 00:07:36.000 --> 00:07:36.879 They couldn't say that. 00:07:36.959 --> 00:07:39.839 They couldn't say, oh, Jesus, yeah, he might be some prophet. 00:07:39.920 --> 00:07:47.759 Maybe he hears from God, but he's no Moses, he's no Elijah, he's no Elijah, because Jesus would do miracles like those guys, but then he'd take it to a whole other level. 00:07:49.199 --> 00:07:50.480 They could not deny that. 00:07:52.240 --> 00:07:56.240 There's so many parallels between what Elijah does here and what Jesus does. 00:07:56.319 --> 00:08:01.279 For example, in Matthew chapter 14, we get to see this miracle that takes place, very similar. 00:08:01.519 --> 00:08:08.720 Then he told the people to sit down on the grass, and Jesus took the five loaves and two fish, looked up toward heaven, and blessed them. 00:08:08.879 --> 00:08:13.120 And then breaking the loaves into pieces, he gave the bread to the disciples who distributed it to the people. 00:08:13.279 --> 00:08:18.560 They all ate as much as they wanted, and afterwards the disciples picked up twelve baskets of leftovers. 00:08:18.720 --> 00:08:23.120 About five thousand men were fed that day, in addition to all the women and the children. 00:08:23.920 --> 00:08:29.199 So this is Jesus doing Elijah's miracle, but to a much, much greater degree. 00:08:31.199 --> 00:08:32.879 But there's a similarity. 00:08:33.440 --> 00:08:37.919 Even beyond just the food multiplying, there's a similarity, and it's very, very interesting. 00:08:38.080 --> 00:08:43.919 Because if you know that story of Jesus feeding the 5,000, he's got these five little loaves of bread, these would be like dinner rolls. 00:08:44.080 --> 00:08:46.240 And he's got two fish, these would have been sardines. 00:08:46.320 --> 00:08:48.960 That was actually the main food source of that area, the Sea of Galilee. 00:08:49.039 --> 00:08:50.879 They fished for sardines, essentially. 00:08:51.120 --> 00:08:59.039 So Jesus takes a few little dinner rolls and two sardines, and he feeds over 5,000 people to the point that there's baskets of leftovers. 00:08:59.200 --> 00:09:01.279 Like baskets of leftovers. 00:09:02.720 --> 00:09:05.840 But where did the fish and the bread come from? 00:09:06.480 --> 00:09:10.399 It came from this little boy who happened to have that on him, packed with him. 00:09:10.480 --> 00:09:13.039 It would have been his probably only meal for that day. 00:09:13.200 --> 00:09:17.200 And Jesus asked that boy to give to him what he had. 00:09:17.679 --> 00:09:21.120 And then Jesus used that to provide for all these people. 00:09:21.279 --> 00:09:30.960 Elijah asks this widow to give to him what little she has, and it's through that that this miracle takes place. 00:09:31.679 --> 00:09:34.399 It's a very strange his disciples, Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves, which is everyone's favorite thing to do, and take up their cross and follow me. 00:16:19.759 --> 00:16:23.600 This is Jesus giving a sales pitch, by the way, to people who might want to be his followers. 00:16:23.759 --> 00:16:31.039 You want to be my disciple, deny yourself, take up your cross, which means be willing to die and follow me. 00:16:32.399 --> 00:16:41.840 And if you think maybe he's just grabbing attention, and then he's about to get into all the benefits of being a Jesus' follower, the very next statement, he
