contract, it's like a sacred personal agreement between two people, between two parties. 00:03:06.879 --> 00:03:11.280 It's something much, much, much more personal and sacred than like a contract. 00:03:40.479 We see a covenant with a man named Abraham where God says, Look, I'm gonna adopt you and I'm gonna make you and your family my people, and I'm gonna bring blessing to the entire earth through your family. 00:03:40.639 --> 00:03:42.400 And Jesus came from that family. 00:03:42.639 --> 00:03:47.919 There's several covenants in the Bible between God and people, but there's really two that we tend to focus on. 00:03:48.159 --> 00:03:55.599 There's the covenant that we're in right now with Jesus, if we have given our lives to him, and there's this covenant that we often call the old covenant or the law. 00:03:55.759 --> 00:04:03.280 And it's a covenant that God gave to a man named Moses, and it defined the way that people interacted with God for a thousand plus years. 00:04:03.520 --> 00:04:07.680 And it's interesting because if you're familiar with the old covenant, it seems really harsh and really hard. 00:04:07.840 --> 00:04:11.840 It almost seems like God was in a really bad mood the day that he came up with that covenant. 00:04:11.919 --> 00:04:13.360 And that happens sometimes at my home. 00:04:13.439 --> 00:04:20.720 I don't know about you, but I'll like maybe that's the mood God was in when he gave us the old covenant, because it's all these laws and these rules and these rituals, and it just seems like so much. 00:04:36.879 --> 00:04:40.800 And then we look at Jesus and he just seems so laid back and so chill. 00:04:41.360 --> 00:04:46.560 And his covenant is about love and forgiveness and mercy and all these beautiful things, and we're what happened? 00:04:54.639 --> 00:05:00.639 And the reality is these two covenants, they're not they're not in stark contrast to one another like we think. 00:05:01.040 --> 00:05:03.199 They both a total of 613 commands, all given to ancient Israel, found in the first five books of the Bible, which in Hebrew are called the Torah. 00:06:40.079 --> 00:06:46.240 Now the word Torah is usually translated in English as the law, because it has all of these laws in it. 00:06:46.399 --> 00:06:51.120 And as you read through them, you wonder, am I supposed to obey some of these, all of these? 00:06:51.279 --> 00:06:53.439 I mean, what's the purpose of the law? 00:06:53.680 --> 00:07:06.480 Well, that translation is kind of confusing because while the Torah has laws in it, the book itself is fundamentally a story about how God is creating new kinds of people who are fully able to love God and love others. 00:07:06.639 --> 00:07:12.079 And when Jesus taught about the Torah, he said that he was bringing that story to its fulfillment. 00:07:12.399 --> 00:07:15.279 So walk me through the story and how it's fulfilled. 00:07:15.519 --> 00:07:19.199 So the story begins with God creating humanity who rebels. 00:07:19.519 --> 00:07:28.319 And God chooses Abraham to bless all of the nations through his family, who end up in slavery down in Egypt, and so God rescues them. 00:07:28.560 --> 00:07:32.399 Then at Mount Sinai, God makes a covenant with Israel, like an agreement. 00:07:32.560 --> 00:07:36.639 And all of the laws that Moses gives to Israel are the terms of that agreement. 00:07:36.800 --> 00:07:38.079 They're like a constitution. 00:07:38.240 --> 00:07:43.199 And so some of the laws they're about rituals and customs that set Israel apart from the nations. 00:07:43.360 --> 00:07:50.720 Other laws are about social justice or morality, and by following these, Israel would show the other nations what God is like. 00:07:51.040 --> 00:07:55.839 Okay, so the rest of the Torah is just the complete list of laws that Moses gives Israel? 00:07:56.399 --> 00:07:59.040 No, the rest of the Torah just continues the story. 00:07:59.199 --> 00:08:09.120 And the 613 commands are only a selection from that original constitution, and even these have been broken up and placed as strategic points within the story. 00:08:09.360 --> 00:08:12.319 Now pay attention, because you'll see a really clear pattern. 00:08:12.480 --> 00:08:14.319 Moses gives the first laws to Israel. 00:08:14.560 --> 00:08:16.879 Yeah, don't worship other gods, don't make idols. 00:08:17.040 --> 00:08:20.720 And then right after that, there's a story of Israel breaking those very laws. 00:08:21.040 --> 00:08:22.639 Yeah, they worship the golden calf. 00:08:22.879 --> 00:08:26.800 And so Moses gives some more laws, and then you get more stories of rebellion. 00:08:26.959 --> 00:08:31.680 Some more laws, rebellion again, some more laws, more rebellion, and you start to see the point. 00:08:32.000 --> 00:08:35.679 Right, no matter how many laws, they're just gonna continue to rebel. 00:08:36.080 --> 00:08:47.039 So at the conclusion of the Torah's story, Moses gives this final speech to Israel as they prepare to go into their new home, and he tells them, You guys, I know that you're not going to follow all of God's laws. 00:08:47.200 --> 00:08:49.279 You've proven to me that you're incapable. 00:08:49.440 --> 00:08:57.919 And Moses says, the problem is that their hearts are hard and that they're going to need new, transformed hearts if they're ever going to truly follow God's law. 00:08:58.080 --> 00:08:58.799 And he was right. 00:08:58.879 --> 00:09:01.840 I mean, the story goes on to recount Israel's total failure. 00:09:02.080 --> 00:09:04.399 They go into the land, they break all the laws. 00:09:04.559 --> 00:09:04.879 Right. 00:09:05.039 --> 00:09:11.440 Now, the next section of books in the Jewish tradition are the 15 books of the prophets, and they reflect back on the story. 00:09:11.679 --> 00:09:20.320 For example, Ezekiel, he said that if Israel was ever going to obey the law, God's Spirit would have to transform their hard hearts into soft hearts. 00:09:20.480 --> 00:09:27.840 And Jeremiah said that's when obedience to God's commands wouldn't feel like a duty, but they would be written deep in their hearts. 00:09:28.080 --> 00:09:35.519 And Isaiah, he promised a future leader, Israel's Messiah, who will lead all of the people in obedience to the law. 00:09:35.759 --> 00:09:44.720 Now in Jewish tradition, all of these books together are called the prophets, even the historical books, because they're continuing the story told from the perspective of the prophets. 00:09:45.039 --> 00:09:55.279 Okay, so we have the law and the prophets, and they're telling one connected story about God's desire to bless the whole world through a people, Israel, who it turns out needs a new heart. 00:09:55.679 --> 00:09:59.759 Yes, and Jesus saw himself as continuing that story. 00:10:00.000 --> 00:10:07.200 So he agreed with the law and the prophets when he taught that it's out of the human heart that come the most ugly parts of human nature. 00:10:07.360 --> 00:10:10.879 It's like the default setting of our hearts as opposed to God's law. 00:10:11.120 --> 00:10:16.320 But Jesus also said that he came to solve that problem, and in his words, to fulfill the law. 00:10:16.559 --> 00:10:18.960 So what does he mean there to fulfill the law? 00:10:19.279 --> 00:10:28.159 Well, first he said that the demand of all of the laws in the Torah could be fulfilled by what he called the great command that we are to love God and to love others. 00:10:28.480 --> 00:10:29.919 So that seems pretty easy. 00:10:30.000 --> 00:10:31.360 I mean, we all want to love. 00:10:32.159 --> 00:10:33.679 We think we want to love. 00:10:33.919 --> 00:10:37.360 But Jesus showed how love is far more demanding than we realize. 00:10:37.759 --> 00:10:40.000 So he quotes the law: do not murder. 00:10:40.080 --> 00:10:43.519 And he says, yes, not killing someone is a very loving thing to do. 00:10:43.679 --> 00:10:53.279 But then he also says that when you treat someone with disrespect, or when you nurse resentment against them, you're also violating God's moral ideal because you're not treating that person with love. 00:10:53.440 --> 00:10:57.440 And so Jesus said true love ought to extend even to our own enemies. 00:10:57.679 --> 00:11:06.480 So even though this command seems very simple, Jesus showed how our hearts are not currently equipped to fulfill even this basic command of God to love others. 00:11:06.720 --> 00:11:08.639 And that's kind of a doubter. 00:11:08.960 --> 00:11:13.200 But where Israel failed, Jesus brought this story to its fulfillment. 00:11:13.360 --> 00:11:19.840 As Israel's Messiah, he fully loved God and others, and he showed all of the nations what God is truly like. 00:11:20.080 --> that he would send God's Spirit to transform their hearts so that they could follow him and fulfill the purpose of the law: to love God and to love their neighbor. 00:11:38.639 --> 00:11:41.759 So
