00:01:24.560 And the situation is you hear last week Justin started this message series on the book of Acts, and so he he took us through the ascension of Jesus, and his disciples are there waiting, 120 of them in the the upper room, and then Pentecost is where he ended last week. 00:01:24.719 --> 00:01:37.920 And so that kind of puts us halfway through Acts chapter two, but the next three things that happen, since this is my Sunday, is Peter gives three of these kind of impromptu messages, famous messages. 00:01:38.079 --> 00:01:44.879 And about a third of the book of Acts is actually uh scene is from last week. 00:03:27.759 --> 00:03:35.840 Uh Jesus has been with his disciples for 40 days, and he's been giving them this intensive training on the kingdom of God before he ascends. 00:03:36.080 --> 00:03:42.879 And then for 10 days or so, they're hanging out in Jerusalem and they're uh waiting for the Holy Spirit. 00:03:43.039 --> 00:03:45.199 Jesus has told them to wait patiently. 00:03:45.360 --> 00:03:49.360 And so they're in all in the same house together, all 120 of them. 00:03:49.599 --> 00:03:56.639 Must be a big house, but it may be even the same place where they have the upper room where they took the Lord's Supper with Jesus. 00:03:56.879 --> 00:04:05.680 And so it says in Acts chapter 2, like we talked about last week, that without warning, the Holy Spirit comes, and this is Pentecost. 00:04:05.840 --> 00:04:18.079 And it's a huge, mighty wind, it's this huge sound, and flames of fire appear over each person, and they begin speaking the native tongues of everybody that's in town. 00:04:18.319 --> 00:04:23.759 And it's such a huge sound that it attracts the whole town to the outside of the house. 00:04:23.839 --> 00:04:25.120 They want to know what's going on. 00:04:25.199 --> 00:04:33.360 So everybody goes outside, and this big crowd, some of these people here are kind of cynical, and they demand an explanation. 00:04:33.600 --> 00:04:40.560 And so Peter is the one that stands up and gives this message that we're gonna cover this morning to the crowd. 00:04:40.800 --> 00:04:43.120 So you've got to imagine kind of this scene in your head. 00:04:43.279 --> 00:04:49.040 This is Peter comes out and immediately gets, you know, uh demands an explanation by the crowd. 00:04:49.120 --> 00:04:51.839 So he gives this message, and the message is amazing. 00:04:52.000 --> 00:05:03.360 It's in this one message, he lays out salvation through Jesus so clearly in the way that we've always talked about, even for thousands of years since this. 00:05:03.680 --> 00:05:11.680 And then also he lays out all the core principles of the church, which is founded that day, modern church. 00:05:11.920 --> 00:05:22.800 But all this, but imagine, like visually, while this is going on, uh, as a result of this day, 3,000 people are baptized and immediately found the church. 00:05:23.040 --> 00:05:27.920 And so there's 120 of these disciples that have just been filled with the spirit at Pentecost. 00:05:28.079 --> 00:05:42.000 So Peter's making this amazing historic message, but then 119 other people are around the sides, you know, kind of like the prayer team we have here, and they're speaking exactly in the native tongues of these people, just reaping the harvest. 00:05:42.240 --> 00:05:48.639 And those people are saying, My life has changed, and they're going to get more people, and they come and then they get spoken to. 00:05:48.800 --> 00:05:50.560 So it's an amazing scene. 00:05:50.800 --> 00:05:53.680 But Peter's message is also given verbatim. 00:05:54.720 --> 00:06:05.199 So I would suspect while they're in this upper room that they're probably praying exactly as Jesus had instructed them to pray in in the Lord's Prayer. 00:06:05.839 --> 00:06:09.439 Your kingdom come on earth as it is in heaven. 00:06:09.839 --> 00:06:12.639 So that's the prayer that Jesus has taught them. 00:06:12.800 --> 00:06:15.839 And so this is going to be the answer at Pentecost. 00:06:16.079 --> 00:06:19.279 What does this mean for heaven to come to earth? 00:06:19.759 --> 00:06:21.120 So here's the way it starts. 00:06:21.680 --> 00:06:23.759 This is Acts chapter 2. 00:06:24.399 --> 00:06:29.600 That's when Peter stood up and backed by the other eleven, spoke out with bold urgency. 00:06:30.319 --> 00:06:36.000 Fellow Jews, all of you who are visiting Jerusalem, listen carefully and get this story straight. 00:06:36.319 --> 00:06:38.879 These people aren't drunk, as some of you suspect. 00:06:39.040 --> 00:06:40.480 They haven't had time to get drunk. 00:06:40.560 --> 00:06:42.480 It's only 9 o'clock in the morning. 00:06:42.800 --> 00:06:47.199 So, like every great message, he starts with a joke, puts the crowd at ease. 00:06:47.279 --> 00:06:48.319 You probably think we're drunk. 00:06:48.480 --> 00:06:50.079 We're not drunk, it's only 9 a.m. 00:06:50.639 --> 00:06:53.199 long ago by the prophet Joel. 00:07:02.319 --> 00:07:06.800 In the last days, God says, I will pour out my spirit upon all people. 00:07:07.040 --> 00:07:13.439 Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, and your old men will dream dreams. 00:07:13.839 --> 00:07:21.439 In those days, I will pour out my spirit even on my servants, men and women alike, and they will prophesy. 00:07:22.079 --> 00:07:22.959 So I love this. 00:07:23.120 --> 00:07:26.319 This is the Spirit flooding the earth. 00:07:26.560 --> 00:07:35.040 I think it's great that we're talking about the Holy Spirit here in Acts in a message series, right after we've talked about the great flood in Genesis. 00:07:35.360 --> 00:07:38.959 Because this is truly the great flood. 00:07:39.120 --> 00:07:43.279 This is the flood of life, the flood of the spirit that comes into the world. 00:07:43.360 --> 00:07:46.480 And once this flood starts, it never stops. 00:07:46.639 --> 00:07:50.959 It's still going on today, more and more, and it always, it always will. 00:07:51.120 --> 00:07:54.240 And that's that's the image that is given. 00:07:54.399 --> 00:07:56.160 The spirit flows. 00:07:56.319 --> 00:08:02.079 Like in Joel, it says, this is not just for a few select people or at a certain place. 00:08:02.399 --> 00:08:13.680 Like in the Old Testament, the Spirit was very active, but he was active in like the patriarchs and David and the prophets, and they would would write these wonderful words and speak them. 00:08:14.000 --> 00:08:17.120 But now the spirit has gone out, flooding the world. 00:08:17.279 --> 00:08:21.279 This is for young and old, men and women, everyone. 00:08:22.000 --> 00:08:27.600 The another great prophecy, you had that one in Joel that Peter just quoted. 00:08:27.759 --> 00:08:31.120 There's another one in Ezekiel 47, which is one of my favorites. 00:08:31.199 --> 00:08:39.519 Um, and it describes this this visual is the temple, and there's this spring that's coming out of the temple, this spring of water. 00:08:39.600 --> 00:08:43.279 And it goes underneath the door and it begins to flood the valley to the east. 00:08:43.440 --> 00:08:47.679 And wherever this water from the temple flows, life springs up. 00:08:47.840 --> 00:08:52.960 Trees on both sides, and it brings life even to the Dead Sea forever. 00:08:53.600 --> 00:09:01.919 And so that's the image, the flood of the spirit that's gonna come from the temple, that's been the expectation for generations through the prophets. 00:09:02.639 --> 00:09:04.080 But how is this gonna happen? 00:09:04.240 --> 00:09:07.360 No one has really known what this is gonna look like. 00:09:07.919 --> 00:09:10.559 So the twist in the story comes with Jesus. 00:09:10.799 --> 00:09:22.000 Jesus stands up in his ministry in John 7, and Jesus says, On the final and climactic day of the feast, Jesus took his stand. 00:09:22.320 --> 00:09:26.879 He cried out, If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink. 00:09:27.519 --> 00:09:33.679 Rivers of living water will brim and spill out of the depths of anyone who believes in me in this way. 00:09:34.320 --> 00:09:35.919 Just as the scripture says. 00:09:36.320 --> 00:09:41.279 And he said this in regard to the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were about to receive. 00:09:41.440 --> 00:09:45.840 The Spirit had not yet been given because Jesus had not been glorified. 00:09:46.159 --> 00:09:51.600 So Jesus was saying that in advance, but now at Pentecost, this has happened, what Jesus said was going to. 00:09:51.840 --> 00:09:54.000 So now the Spirit is pouring out. 00:09:54.240 --> 00:09:56.000 So that's the great plot twist. 00:09:56.159 --> 00:09:59.679 That's how Jesus, the king, decides to rule his kingdom. 00:10:00.000 --> 00:10:04.559 The temple is no longer just one geographical location. 00:10:05.039 --> 00:10:10.399 Like in the temple, you know, you they have this altar that has a fire perpetually burning there. 00:10:10.799 --> 00:10:17.759 But the fire now, literally in the symbol, this the fire is over every single person in the spirit. 00:10:17.919 --> 00:10:23.279 And then, like in Ezekiel 47, you've got the water that springs out of the temple and and brings life. 00:10:23.519 --> 00:10:27.519 Jesus says, Now the temple is with each of you. 00:10:27.759 --> 00:10:30.720 Our bodies are the temple of the Holy Spirit. 00:10:30.879 --> 00:10:38.320 So Jesus says, Anyone who believes in me, rivers of living water will brim and spill out of the depths. 00:10:38.559 --> 00:10:42.480 So that's how he's going to bring life to this world through us. 00:10:42.639 --> 00:10:45.440 We are his temple, because the temple was all about Jesus. 00:10:45.679 --> 00:10:51.440 It's just thousands of symbols, and you could write books of all the stuff that just it was just screamed Jesus. 00:10:51.679 --> 00:10:58.879 And then Jesus, when he accomplishes his victory and sends the Holy Spirit, then now wherever Jesus is, that's the temple. 00:10:59.039 --> 00:11:01.360 Jesus is with us, and he's never gonna leave. 00:11:02.000 --> 00:11:09.279 So keep that image in your mind, this never-ending spring of life that's coming now from all of us. 00:11:10.399 --> 00:11:14.639 So, and we know this is possible, by the way, that to live in this new kind of way. 00:11:14.879 --> 00:11:16.559 I know that kind of opens a can of worms. 00:11:16.639 --> 00:11:17.600 What does that look like? 00:11:17.840 --> 00:11:22.879 But we know what that looks like because that's exactly how Jesus was described. 00:11:23.120 --> 00:11:25.519 Jesus is the one that sets the example. 00:11:26.559 --> 00:11:39.919 In John 3, John the Baptist is describing Jesus, and he describes Jesus like this Anyone who accepts his testimony can affirm that God is true, for he's sent by God. 00:11:40.320 --> 00:11:46.080 He speaks God's words, for God gives him, God gives Jesus the Spirit without limit. 00:11:46.320 --> 00:11:47.360 So he's our example. 00:11:47.519 --> 00:11:50.879 Jesus is the one that is so filled with the Spirit without limit. 00:11:51.039 --> 00:11:54.240 There's this endless supply of life that comes from him. 00:11:55.440 --> 00:12:03.200 So that's that this new way of living starting in Jerusalem and it's gonna break out across the whole world. 00:12:03.840 --> 00:12:05.440 Alright, so Peter continues here. 00:12:05.519 --> 00:12:09.679 He says, Fellow Israelites, listen carefully to these words. 00:12:10.000 --> 00:12:14.159 Jesus the Nazarene, a man thoroughly accredited by God to you. 00:12:14.399 --> 00:12:18.960 The miracles and wonders and signs that God did through him are common knowledge. 00:12:19.279 --> 00:12:29.440 This Jesus, following the deliberate and well-thought-out plan of God, was betrayed by men who took the law into their own hands and was handed over to you. 00:12:29.679 --> 00:12:32.000 And you pinned him to a cross and killed him. 00:12:32.399 --> 00:12:35.759 But God untied the death ropes and raised him up. 00:12:36.159 --> 00:12:38.480 Death was no match for him. 00:12:39.200 --> 00:12:44.799 So already we're seeing this amazing example of this new abundant way to live. 00:12:45.039 --> 00:12:51.200 Peter's a great example of this, because this is abundant courage and forgiveness that he's talking about. 00:12:52.080 --> 00:13:00.960 You have to remember the same crowd that's assembled, you know, we don't know how many thousands of people, at least 3,000 were baptized that day, so it had to have been even more. 00:13:01.279 --> 00:13:10.080 But this is the same crowd, a lot of the literal same people that just a few months ago had been shouting to crucify Jesus. 00:13:10.240 --> 00:13:12.399 This is the bloodthirsty mob. 00:13:12.559 --> 00:13:21.440 And now Peter is standing before them, and his message, as we're about to see, is gonna be Yes, you crucified Jesus. 00:13:21.600 --> 00:13:24.240 He is the king, the Messiah we've been waiting for. 00:13:24.559 --> 00:13:27.759 But you need to experience forgiveness and come join the you're getting baptized today, you're thinking about that, and you're wondering, you know, could Jesus ever dare love me? 00:13:53.120 --> 00:13:59.519 And you're maybe listing in your minds right now all the different things that might scare him away. 00:13:59.919 --> 00:14:03.519 But please know, like he just said, death is no match for him. 00:14:03.840 --> 00:14:05.679 That's the God that we continues here, Acts 2.25. 00:14:18.559 --> 00:14:22.960 King David said this about him I see that the Lord is always with me. 00:14:23.200 --> 00:14:26.799 I will not be shaken, for he's right beside me. 00:14:27.039 --> 00:14:30.720 No wonder my heart is glad, and my tongue shouts his praises. 00:14:31.200 --> 00:14:38.720 My body rests in hope, for you will not leave my soul among the dead, or allow your holy one to rot in the grave. 00:14:38.879 --> 00:14:44.159 You have shown me the way of life, and you will fill me with the joy of your presence. 00:14:44.720 --> 00:14:45.600 I really love that. 00:14:45.840 --> 00:14:50.879 King David says this about him I will see that the Lord is always with me. 00:14:51.120 --> 00:14:57.279 So Peter is saying to the crowd, he's quoting a famous Psalm written by King David, like in Psalms in the Old Testament. 00:14:57.360 --> 00:15:02.879 And he's saying, You've been risk reading this passage, because this isn't David just talking about himself. 00:15:03.120 --> 00:15:09.279 David is looking through the corridors of history to Jesus, and he's saying this about the Messiah. 00:15:09.840 --> 00:15:13.759 David says, This is how you'll know the Messiah's here. 00:15:13.919 --> 00:15:17.519 This is the attitude that will be in the Messiah. 00:15:17.679 --> 00:15:21.759 He will say, to paraphrase, God is always with me. 00:15:22.000 --> 00:15:23.440 He will have that conviction. 00:15:23.679 --> 00:15:26.799 My heart is glad, my body rests in hope. 00:15:26.960 --> 00:15:29.519 The fear of death will not rule my life. 00:15:29.759 --> 00:15:33.840 And I'm filled with joy in the presence of God forever. 00:15:34.159 --> 00:15:42.720 King David says, When that guy shows up, then salvation is about to begin in Jerusalem, and it's gonna spring and it's gonna fill this whole world. 00:15:43.200 --> 00:15:49.600 So that's been the promise in the Old Testament, and now, finally at Pentecost, the reality is part of it, when uh King David said, The Messiah is going to know that God, you are always with me. 00:16:15.840 --> 00:16:26.399 John 16, Jesus says, But the time is coming, indeed, it's here now, when you will be scattered, each of you going his own way, leaving me alone. 00:16:26.559 --> 00:16:30.159 And yet, I'm not alone, because my father is with me. 00:16:30.399 --> 00:16:42.159 So he's talking about, you know, he's about to be betrayed, and uh, and Peter's gonna deny him three times, and this is gonna be the bottom of Jesus' life, and he's gonna know everyone else is gonna leave him alone. 00:16:42.240 --> 00:16:45.919 But Jesus lives with this conviction that I'm never alone. 00:16:46.240 --> 00:16:50.559 The Spirit is always with me, my father is always always with me.
