Jesus met. 00:01:00.240 --> 00:01:12.719 You know how those interactions had changed uh their lives, but also just uh what he did and what he said and what was important to him, how it reflects his nature and and the true nature of God. 00:01:12.879 --> 00:01:14.159 We've looked at three of these meetings. 00:01:14.319 --> 00:01:15.760 Nathaniel was the first. 00:01:16.000 --> 00:01:25.840 He was a uh outwardly honest and cynical guy who was uh blown away that Jesus knew him, and that Jesus had always known him. 00:01:26.000 --> 00:01:34.879 We looked at a uh man that was uh naked and oppressed, crazed, living in a cemetery. 00:01:35.040 --> 00:01:44.879 Jesus loved him and transformed his whole life and then sent him home to explain what had happened, explain the change to those around him. 00:01:45.120 --> 00:01:52.000 Two weeks ago, it was a paralyzed man that was lower through uh the ceiling and how Jesus did the most important thing first. 00:01:52.159 --> 00:01:57.359 He he forgave him and restored his relationship with uh with him and God. 00:01:57.439 --> 00:02:01.280 But then eventually, he completely healed him. 00:02:01.519 --> 00:02:10.319 So this morning we're gonna look at an interaction uh between Jesus and an overwhelmed, thankful woman. 00:02:11.120 --> 00:02:13.360 We read about it in Luke chapter 7. 00:02:13.599 --> 00:02:15.840 One of the Pharisees asked Jesus to have dinner with him. 00:02:15.919 --> 00:02:18.400 So Jesus went to his home and sat down to eat. 00:02:18.639 --> 00:02:26.159 When a certain immoral woman from that city heard he was eating there, she brought a beautiful alabaster jar filled with expensive perfume. 00:02:26.719 --> 00:02:35.199 This description, and an immoral woman uh infers that she was a prostitute in that city. 00:02:35.360 --> 00:02:40.240 You know, and she brings this beautiful jar filled with expensive perfume. 00:02:41.280 --> 00:02:45.919 And uh by expensive, you know, crazy expensive. 00:02:46.080 --> 00:02:54.879 I mean you can't just go out then and buy, you know, Brittany or whatever the um perfume of the uh of the month was. 00:02:55.120 --> 00:03:03.360 Um you know, uh uh a 00:03:15.680 You know, but the uh the whole situation doesn't shock us. 00:03:16.080 --> 00:03:22.240 The fact that she's a prostitute, the fact that she brings an extravagant gift. 00:03:22.560 --> 00:03:23.840 Because we know Jesus. 00:03:24.000 --> 00:03:33.120 We know Jesus, we know his hearts, we know his priorities, we know that that he was described as a friend to tax collectors and prostitutes. 00:03:33.599 --> 00:03:45.039 But to the Pharisees and the guy that invited Jesus over to his house for dinner, they would have been freaked out and appalled. 00:03:46.080 --> --> 00:04:33.680 She'd either heard Jesus teach or had been told about him, but her response is effusive. 00:04:33.759 --> 00:04:35.199 Her response is extravagant. 00:04:36.000 --> 00:04:37.519 She is overwhelmed. 00:04:37.600 --> 00:04:40.240 She's breaking every social norm. 00:04:40.959 --> 00:04:43.600 You know, she's even breaking Jewish law. 00:04:43.920 --> 00:04:57.759 Under the Mishnah, the Pharisees and and uh um the religious people went not just by Moses' law, but they went by the Mishnah, which was their interpretation of Moses' law. 00:04:57.839 --> 00:05:04.240 They would pick everything they could think of in everyday life, and then they would try and interpret um how to apply Moses' law. 00:05:04.399 --> 00:05:15.040 And so they followed the uh the Mishnah, and and uh and under that tradition, a woman could not show her hair in public at all. 00:05:15.199 --> 00:05:22.000 It was considered sexually provocative for a woman to display um her hair in public. 00:05:22.560 --> 00:05:30.319 Uh it was uh and there was actually there's harsh, harsh consequences under the uh Mishnah. 00:05:30.399 --> 00:05:42.399 A woman certainly would not be talking and touching a man, nor a rabbi, a teacher like Jesus, touching and talking to a woman. 00:05:42.560 --> 00:05:53.680 But here she is, washing his feet with her hair, pouring expensive perfume on them, kissing his feet over and over. 00:05:54.879 --> 00:06:10.480 It's a pretty good guess that up until this day, that this woman had only been mistreated and devalued by men until today. 00:06:11.600 --> 00:06:17.279 This man, the son of God, the son of God, he loves her. 00:06:18.079 --> 00:06:23.920 You know, Jesus went out of his way to show the value of women. 00:06:25.680 --> 00:06:26.800 To show the value of women. 00:06:26.959 --> 00:06:30.480 Women were truly oppressed in Jesus' day. 00:06:31.759 --> 00:06:36.240 Jewish men wouldn't have anything to do outwardly with women. 00:06:36.560 --> 00:06:42.319 Jesus, on the other hand, went out of his way to include everyone. 00:06:42.639 --> 00:06:46.959 His first statement when starting his ministry was when he quoted Isaiah 61. 00:06:47.199 --> 00:06:48.879 It's uh in Luke 4. 00:06:48.959 --> 00:06:52.639 It says, The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, for he's anointed me to bring good news to the poor. 00:06:52.800 --> 00:07:02.879 He has sent me to proclaim that captives will be released, that the blind will see, that the oppressed will be set free, and that the time of the Lord's favor has come. 00:07:03.600 --> 00:07:11.600 Women in Jesus' day were some of the most oppressed, some of the most oppressed. 00:07:11.759 --> 00:07:17.040 Not much different than we see in some Middle Eastern countries today. 00:07:19.920 --> 00:07:25.680 So all the interactions that Jesus had with women would have been shocking to the religious elite. 00:07:26.480 --> 00:07:29.519 But they were important and they were on purpose. 00:07:29.680 --> 00:07:34.639 You know, when Jesus as a baby was presented in the temple, it was to two prophets. 00:07:35.439 --> 00:07:39.199 One of them, Anna, a woman. 00:07:39.439 --> 00:07:41.600 Some of Jesus' closest followers were women. 00:07:41.680 --> 00:07:43.920 In fact, there was a group of wealthy women. 00:07:44.000 --> 00:07:54.959 Uh it included Herod's business manager, Joanna, but there was this group of wealthy women that followed Jesus around everywhere and financially supported Jesus and his disciples. 00:07:55.199 --> 00:07:58.879 Two of Jesus' closest friends were Mary and Martha. 00:07:59.199 --> 00:08:04.160 When Jesus told stories, parables, he would go out of his way to include women. 00:08:04.240 --> 00:08:07.920 So he'd tell a story of the shepherd and the lost sheep. 00:08:08.079 --> 00:08:15.759 And then back to back, immediately he would follow it up with the parable of the woman and the lost coin. 00:08:16.160 --> 00:08:20.079 You know, at the cross, women, the first to see Jesus in the empty tomb? 00:08:21.199 --> 00:08:21.839 Women. 00:08:23.600 --> 00:08:25.120 It wasn't an accident. 00:08:25.279 --> 00:08:26.160 It was 00:08:43.759 --> 00:08:52.320 There is no longer Jew or Gentile, slave or free, male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. 00:08:56.320 --> 00:09:17.039 You know, I uh I say all that to say really to you women that if you have been devalued, if you have been in a church culture that makes you feel oppressed or unimportant, it wasn't Jesus. 00:09:17.519 --> 00:09:19.360 It was not Jesus. 00:09:20.320 --> 00:09:21.200 It was people. 00:09:21.360 --> 00:09:24.240 Jesus came to set us all free. 00:09:24.799 --> 00:09:26.639 To set us all free. 00:09:28.159 --> 00:09:30.399 Back to this particular woman. 00:09:30.720 --> 00:09:32.559 So picture this room. 00:09:32.799 --> 00:09:37.600 Man, can you feel the tension in this particular room? 00:09:38.000 --> 00:09:44.080 They're sitting down to eat, Jesus and these religious leaders, the uh the Pharisees. 00:09:44.879 --> 00:09:52.399 And against all social norms, against their laws, this woman is laying at Jesus' feet, washing his feet. 00:09:55.840 --> 00:09:57.440 Can you imagine what they're thinking? 00:09:57.600 --> 00:09:58.559 Is he gonna stop them? 00:09:58.720 --> 00:10:00.320 I mean, is he gonna stop her? 00:10:00.559 --> 00:10:01.440 What's he doing? 00:10:01.919 --> 00:10:03.120 What's going on? 00:10:03.840 --> 00:10:13.279 It says, when the Pharisee who had invited him saw this, he said to himself, If this man were a prophet, he would know what kind of woman is touching him. 00:10:14.799 --> 00:10:16.240 She's a sinner. 00:10:17.679 --> 00:10:20.559 And so Simon, his host, is thinking, I knew it. 00:10:20.720 --> 00:10:21.759 I knew it. 00:10:22.240 --> 00:10:23.759 I knew he wasn't a prophet. 00:10:23.919 --> 00:10:24.879 Look at him. 00:10:26.480 --> 00:10:29.360 If he was a prophet, he would know what this woman's like. 00:10:30.879 --> 00:10:32.960 He wouldn't let her touch him. 00:10:34.240 --> 00:10:38.639 See, he might have known the Mishnah, and he might have known the old law. 00:10:39.919 --> 00:10:42.159 But Simon didn't know Jesus. 00:10:42.799 --> 00:10:48.639 This is exactly the type of person Jesus likes to hang out. 00:10:49.120 --> 00:10:55.759 This is exactly the type of person Jesus shows compassion and love to. 00:10:56.639 --> 00:11:02.960 When Jesus answered his thoughts, or then Jesus answered his thoughts, Simon, he said to the Pharisee, I have something people, five hundred pieces of silver to one, and fifty pieces to the other, but neither of them could repay him. 00:11:16.799 --> 00:11:20.639 So he kindly forgave them both, canceling their debts. 00:11:21.039 --> 00:11:24.000 Who do you suppose loved him more after that? 00:11:24.639 --> 00:11:29.279 Simon answered, Well, I suppose the one whom he canceled the larger debt. 00:11:29.919 --> 00:11:31.840 That's right, Jesus said. 00:11:32.320 --> 00:11:36.159 Then he turned to the woman and said to Simon, Look at this woman kneeling here. 00:11:36.559 --> 00:11:44.559 When I entered your home, you did not offer me water to wash the dust from my feet, but she has washed them with her tears and wiped them with her hair. 00:11:44.720 --> 00:11:51.360 You didn't greet me with a kiss, but from the time I first came in, she has not stopped kissing my feet. 00:11:51.759 --> 00:11:59.600 You neglected the courtesy of olive oil to anoint my head, but she has anointed me with rare perfume. walking around, it's it's a walking culture, it's a you know, it's an uh a raising animal culture, and uh, you know, feet would get uh would get dirty and dusty and and uncomfortable. 00:12:23.759 --> 00:12:28.240 And so you'd always give a guest a bowl of water to wash their feet. 00:12:28.320 --> 00:12:36.639 You wouldn't wash it their feet for them, but you would give them a bowl of water so they could wash their own feet. 00:12:38.159 --> 00:12:41.279 You know, you'd greet someone with a with a kiss on the cheek. 00:12:41.519 --> 00:12:49.840 And then you'd give them some oil to soothe 00:12:59.919 --> 00:13:10.720 You know, it's a handshake, it's a it's uh it's a hug, it's a common courtesy, it's the way of inviting someone to uh, you know, welcome someone into your home. 00:13:10.960 --> 00:13:16.559 You know, back then it was water to wash their feet, a kiss, and oil for their head. 00:13:16.720 --> 00:13:18.720 Simon hadn't done any of these things. 00:13:20.000 --> 00:13:21.360 But the woman had. 00:13:22.799 --> 00:13:26.159 Three times Simon was rude to Jesus. 00:13:27.840 --> 00:13:34.240 In other words, Simon was guilty of little sins. 00:13:35.759 --> subtle here in talking to Simon when he says, but a person who is forgiven little only shows little love. 00:14:10.720 --> 00:14:13.679 He forgave him for his rudeness. 00:14:14.720 --> 00:14:22.399 You see, Simon had already been forgiven for the little, for his rudeness to Jesus. 00:14:22.720 --> 00:14:25.120 There's two people in this encounter. 00:14:25.679 --> 00:14:38.000 There's a religious, self-righteous guy and a grateful, loving, notoriously sinful woman. 00:14:39.360 --> 00:14:44.480 Jesus corrects the man and forgives him. 00:14:45.759 --> 00:14:55.440 Jesus defends and themselves, Who is this man that he goes around forgiving sins? 00:15:13.519 --> 00:15:17.200 This man, thank God, is Jesus. 00:15:20.159 --> 00:15:29.279 Simon had thought if Jesus knew what kind of woman this is, that he wouldn't have touched her, he wouldn't have cared, he wouldn't have valued her, he wouldn't have spent time with her. 00:15:29.919 --> 00:15:31.600 Truth is, Jesus knew.
