Welcome everyone to In Her Leag Now, where women's sports takes center stage. I'm Jay, and these are your hosts, D and Brand. You might be wondering, what is this podcast about? I know these days everybody has a podcast, so it seems. Well, this one is different because we are talking about topics that people just don't talk about. So let me give y'all a little background. Brand over here, wave brand, came in our group chat, was like, listen, y'all, we talk about sports all the time. Like, literally, we are sending each other Instagram, Twitter things, just our hot takes on things back and forth. She was like, we might as well share this to the world because not enough people are talking about them. So, Bran, talk a little bit about like why we're doing this and how do we get to this point?
SPEAKER_00Of course. Thanks, Jalen. So, yeah, and just to explain what in Her League Now is, the podcast is really a space for us to talk about women's sports the way we already talk about it naturally, like Jalen said. We'll be covering the games, the athletes, the culture, the business, the media, and the conversations happening around women's sports. So it's not just about the scores or the highlights, it's about the full picture of women's sports and the women who are shaping it. Um, we started this because we're women who love sports, we've played sports, and we're passionate about seeing women's sports get the attention and respect it deserves. We've, like Jalen said, we've already texted each other about other games. We've sent clips, reacted to big moments, and debated about what's happening. So we thought, like, why not record these conversations and bring other people into it? So our goal is really just to bring awareness to the amazing women in sports, keep people informed, inspire others, and create a space where women's sports are the main conversation, not an afterthought.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I think that is the main point. I think that like consuming so much sports media just because I love sports and I know y'all do too, like you can just tell that women's sports are on the back burner and they get like, you know, the the headlines that need to be like at the front of the stories are just not. Um, and it's not for lack of headlines, for lack of eventful play, like it's just the fact that it's women and people aren't watching it, or I guess the commentators aren't watching it the way that they need to be, and people just don't care about it the way that it needs to be cared about. And it's growing, it's getting bigger every day. Like, and it's it's now, it's time for us to talk about it now. Um, and so I think it's really important for us to do this. One, because we talk to each other all the time, we love each other, um, we play together. Um, so I guess let's talk about you know our connection to sports. And the biggest thing is recent in recent life, um when we were in college, we're not too far from college, don't do that. Um we were in college, we were on the flag football team, intramurals, and anybody who went to UGA knows that intramural sports are no joke, it's no play play. We were serious, and I think that's when we kind of connected and realized that like we have a lot of competitiveness in us and we're serious about sports. Um, and so I know Jalen, we can talk about like our background for sports. Me and Jalen have some similarities in um growing up and playing sports. So, Jay, take it away on just your background in sports.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, absolutely. And first, I just want to say on that intramural side, like you always have people that are like just playing for fun, being cute. Y'all, we're out there running routes, cutting, one-handed catch. Like, we were not serious, we were serious, we were like, wow, like we we really just love to do this. So, yeah, I grew up on the east side, Atlanta, Georgia. Shout out to the east side, everybody listening to this. Um, I didn't meet Adia until technically until we were in college, but after talking in college, we realized that we had played softball in the same exact park growing up, and I know we played against each other, and then like as we matriculated through grade school, we I some of my former teammates were her former teammates, my friends are her friends, and you know, even on a Dia's bachelorette trip, like I was in the hot tub talking to one of her friends that I never met before, and we were talking about softball and we playing, and you know, it's just you just love it. Like, I think there's it's so often that like young girls, like you know, sports might be something they try, but then like they sweat their hair too much. But sports has truly been something that we've continued to love throughout our lives, even though it's not like our main profession. Um, in college, I also did club softball, and I did not know this at the time, but I'm the first black girl to play club softball at UGA. Um, that was crazy. But you know, I just it's a sport that I've always loved. Um, I also play basketball, I picked up tennis in college. Um, and more recently, uh per last year, I got into um what's it tennis? So now like now I feel like I need to get good at golf like before I get rich. So that's where I am with sports. Yeah, but y'all talk a little bit about like where where's your sports ground and and why do you love this so much?
SPEAKER_00Um go ahead, Brian. Yeah, of course. So for me personally, um sports has always been a part of my life in some type of way. Grew up playing sports, like basketball, softball, like all types of things. Um, and then watching sports. Some of my favorite memories are being on the couch, watching um University of Georgia football games with my dad. Like that. I will always like remember those moments and just being around that competitive energy when I was playing sports. Um, I've always loved what sports bring out of people um and in myself as as well. Like the discipline, the confidence, um, even the pressure, pressure makes diamonds. Um, you'll see that the teamwork and the way it can bring people together, the way sports can can unite people from all types of backgrounds all over the world for one common purpose, one uh common goal is really powerful to me. Um, and then as I just say a woman who has played sports and has always loved sports, women's sports specifically just means a lot to me. Like when you've played before, you understand how much work goes into it, you understand the commitment, the competitiveness, and the passion that it takes. So when I watch a lot of these women um athletes perform at such a high level, uh, I also want people to recognize that the greatness the same way like they do in men's sports as well. Um, so that the talent has always been there in women's sports, the stories have always been there, the fan bases have always been there. Um, everyone else just needs to catch up. So I just think now more people are finally starting to pay attention. And I just love that we get to be a part of helping um that conversation like keep going.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, um, I agree. I know that like for me, similar to you, Brandy, like my first introduction to sports was because my dad was watching the Falcons um on Sundays. And so I wanted to go talk to him, so I'll be sitting there watching and I had me a pink mic. Vic Jersey, you know, high Atlanta is um that that is like my intro. Um I played a little bit of everything, um, but my main sport was softball. Um, like Dalen said, um my first team was way at Waywalker Park, Central DeCab, Lady Cardinals, um, and we have some of the same um teammates. But yeah, that was super like enlightening, enlightening to me because I was like, wow, like I love this. Like I knew that I loved sports immediately. Um, I was eight years old, like this is it. Like this is this is what I need to be doing. Um, but yeah, so I played play softball. Um, that was my main, main sport. And um I love sports going through, I did sports journalism in college. I've um covered sports like a lot of my uh career. Um, so yeah, so sports just means so much, especially the media side of it. I guess that's another reason why I'm so passionate about people talking about it, because like the media drives the sports. So like you need the media to be on the side of the athlete and the on the side of the the game and making sure that people understand what's happening and like that's like the heart of the sports. So that means so much to me. And I know that we're going to do amazing. I know that we're going to be able to get all of our opinions out and talk because we're passionate about it. We love it, obviously, since birth. We all got strong, deep connections to sports. So, um, yeah, I mean, I'm here for it. I'm excited.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and something else I want to add too is like why women's sports and why women's sports now, like I just see the confidence of also little girls seeing themselves in professional sports is very important. Like as you're in, like, you know, early grade school to preteen, like starting your cycle and going through just so many different like hormone changes and body changes. Sports actually gave me just so much confidence, like in myself, like to Brandy's point or Indy's point. Like it taught me discipline very early, like discipline that still helps me professionally today. Discipline and you know, just training anything. Being coachable, being coachable, being able to like be heard that you're wrong and that you need to get it right the next time where you're gonna run, or you're gonna do a push-up.
SPEAKER_02Like, yeah, someone's assault or whatever they're called now. I guess they're yeah, I know. Um, like one of my one of my like first memories was like I remember Gabby Douglas um just being propped up like in the media, and I just like she looks like me. Like I just like she was a dark-skinned girl, and she was just like she was young and she just like you know, she was killing it. And so I'm like little stuff like that just made me confident. Like, look at Gabby Douglas out there killing it, like, you know, so like you're saying, like, little girls need to see that because the sports that's pushed out is not for us, and we're not told, like, oh, you can be successful in sports, like the boys are, like, they're like, oh, go be a star like LeBron, oh, go do this, but like women aren't doing that, and you don't have that. So there's some there's little girls who are playing basketball that needs to be like, I won't be like Asia Wilson, like, yes, and and they're gonna have that because she's getting, you know, the media is is embracing her, and and people are understanding that she's a big deal. People are understanding that Angel Reese is a big deal. So we need that, we need the recognition because there's girls that's playing sports that want to see themselves.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, and to piggyback off of that, like we see it all the time. Like, women can have historic performances, they can break records, lead their team into championships, build a brand, like you see with Angel Reese as well, sell tickets, drive conversation, and still not always get the coverage and the respect um she deserved, they deserve.
SPEAKER_02The way our chat went off when Angel Reese got traded to Atlanta. We like, did y'all see? Yeah, it's the same way that they over there going crazy about LeBron going to the Sixers. Like, we like, bro, Angel's coming to Atlanta. Atlanta, exactly. We are hype, and it should be like, it should be a thing.
SPEAKER_00It should be the same. And that's why this podcast is important to us because we want to be a part of like bringing more awareness to those moments. We want to help people stay informed. Um, but we also want to celebrate the women who are making an impact in every area of the sports. Like the, like you said, it's not just the athletes who are playing, even though, of course, they're a huge part of it. Um, we also want to talk about the women in coaching, women in the media, like you said, women in business and marketing, leadership, behind the scenes, everyone helping move women's sports um forward. Um, because women are in sports, they're they're everywhere. So they're in the court, they're on the field, on the track, in the boardroom, behind the camera, on the sidelines, they're creating content, building brands and shaping the culture. So we really want to like highlight those things as well.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. So I guess to tell everybody like what our show will be, the run of show and everything, what to expect um in our podcast. Um, we're gonna be doing headlines, like Brandy said, the news. We're gonna be digging deep into the stories and explaining why it matters. Um, we also have segments like in her bag where we'll talk about the business side of it and the girls getting their coins and all of those things. Um, and then we will also be doing some in his league. We'll give them a little five minutes at the end, talk about a little bit of time at the end, the same way they do for us on the opposite side. They give women's sports a little back end piece. So we're gonna give the men a little back end piece to talk about what they're doing over there. But you know, here women's sports is the center stage.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, and then we'll also highlight, we'll have a set segment called In Her League of Her In a League of Her Own. So we'll where we'll highlight women who are dominating in their respective sport, having major performances, breaking records, or just reminding everyone why they deserve the spotlight. So we're excited to highlight those those performances as well.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, absolutely. And then just on a high level, like what we want to accomplish is we want you to listen to this podcast and be like, you know what? I did not know that was going on, but I heard some brand D and Jay talking about it on internet now, and now I'm talking about it with my coworkers at our lunch break, you know, the same way we again we would talk about LeBron being traded to the Sixers. Like, um, of course, it's WNBA season, so we'll definitely hit that hard. But also, like the Women's World Cup is around the corner. TV USA is incredible. We have me, it's a plethora of sports and athletes truly changing the way we think about it. They had me uh thinking earlier, like, you know, one of the top NFL agents right now landing some of the biggest deals for clients is a woman. Okay, a black woman. Like, okay, so yeah, we we also just want you all to know like that this world is not just important because we like talking about it, but it's because when you see women leading in ways that we historically like women weren't allowed to do these things, and now you have like women with NIL making millions of dollars, women who are finally able to be paid some of what they're worth in the sports, like it's hot right now, so that's why it's in her league now, and that's why it's no better time to start than now. So we really hope you all join us in this journey. Tune in, we will give you the latest, the greatest every week. Um, and yeah, share with your friends. Like, this is definitely gonna be exciting, and we have some special people that's gonna come on. Don't want to say too much, but yes, we will have some very exciting um things in store for you all. So we just really hope you join us on this journey. And with that, that is episode one pilot in her league now, where women's sports takes center stage. Thank you so much for listening to us, Bran.
