From Switch 2 Shine To PS2 Grit: Hades 2, Red Dead Redemption, And The Getaway Revisited
Hades 2 feels like the rare sequel that actually earns its extra systems. We dig into the above world’s health-drain tension, smart spellcrafting, and why a simple fishing rod supports progression without padding the grind. Then we pivot into Red Dead Redemption’s PS5 upgrade and make the case for “gentle touch-ups” over full remasters—60 fps and cleaner presentation that keep the dust, silence, and tone intact. If you just finished Red Dead 2, this is a powerful continuation that respects the original’s shape.
The retro itch takes over when a pristine DualShock 2 turns chaos into control. Scarface suddenly steers straight, The Getaway’s no-HUD vision clicks, and that infamous indicator-based navigation becomes a bold, flawed slice of immersion. We talk how a good controller restores developer intent, and how that changes your read on difficulty, pacing, and fairness. We also revisit Illusion of Time on SNES, using save states to balance adult lives with classic design. It plays like a bridge between Secret of Mana and A Link to the Past, with transformation doors, light upgrades, and dungeons that respect your time.
We round things out with tech talk that actually helps you play. Digital Foundry’s take on Red Dead for Switch 2—DLSS to 1440p docked, mostly 60 fps—shows how smart engineering stretches older worlds, even with minor flicker and shadow quirks. Along the way we tackle licensed curios like the X-Files and LOTR, when graphics analysis enlightens vs distracts, and how preservation can sometimes beat ambition. If you care about game feel, respectful upgrades, and the small fixes that make big differences, you’ll feel right at home.

Hello and welcome to the Una Fish Controller Podcast, your weekly gaming podcast, episode two nine eight. And it's me, RGT, and I'm joined by, as always, George Zippy to my bungalow. How are you doing, George? I'll take it in the which one was I? I'm Zippy. You're Zippy, yeah.
SPEAKER_01:I'll take it.
SPEAKER_04:I hope you have a work colleague called Zippy. Is he like me? No, he's just like Zippy. He's got the same mouth.
SPEAKER_02:Well, mate, you tread on my foot too hard and my whole head flips back like a flip-top bin. Do you remember those reach toothpaste? Yeah. There's a deep cut. It's not even flashy B. Uh just want to say while I'm here for a minute, just for a hot minute, if no one's checked out a new product, shiny and new, everybody loves something new, don't they? We've got a whole new show equal in length to this one about a totally different topic. Completely different, it's about video games, but it's about video games of your. Now you're all nostalgic. Some of you listening, you don't even have a games console. Get on Flashy B. Get yourself those memories from the good old days. We appreciate every single one of you. But you're leaving free stuff on the table. And if I know you as well as I know you, if it's free, give it me is your motto. Go grab a bit of flashy B. Available everywhere, just for the purists, I must say. It's called Flashback. It's not called Flashy B.
SPEAKER_04:You just done a great t-shirt idea then. What is it? If it's free, give it me, it's flashy B. Dang it. Dang, we made it.
SPEAKER_02:I'm doing clicks in the air like I'm some sort of homosexual uh stylist.
SPEAKER_05:That's totally legal to say, come back to me. Anyway.
SPEAKER_02:Anyway, having you, George. Both welcome in that moment. Well, a welcome to everyone that's listening. Uh uh a return to the show for me after your absolutely stupendous solo effort uh last week. So if you haven't checked that out and you want a slice, a full fat slice, no dilution whatsoever of the RGT to find out why he is the all things UCP, the all-seeing eye, then tuck into that. Solo saves and backup something somethings. Yeah, that'll do. Fine. Okay. Go get it before the sell by day ages it out.
SPEAKER_01:Uh RGT, yes.
SPEAKER_02:Oh, while we're here, we might as well say thank you to you for absolutely smashing it out of the park with Flashy V. Generally running things behind the scenes while I'm really just faking death. Uh just to try and boost the show's popularity, if I'm honest with you. Uh great work, RGT. I like to see it. Not a problem at all. I need seven Scott back in rotation at ASP. No problem, please me with it. Okay, alright. Then the only question that remains left is the one that everyone wants to know. Although I'm already beginning to regret asking you this.
SPEAKER_04:What have you been playing? We'll start with the obvious and we'll just get out of the way.
SPEAKER_02:Yeah, I do genuinely want to know, by the way, but I feel like we're gonna be talking about this game for some time.
SPEAKER_04:Yeah, so we're not gonna have a Harvestella, we're not gonna have a Harvestella, you know, uh like that was where I was mentioning that every single week. So yes, I've been playing Hades 2, draw a line, done, right? Hades 2.
SPEAKER_02:Let me permit me, if I'm a to get involved. It's a couple of weeks on since you unveiled on the show that you're playing it on your Switch 2. You've raved about the graphical quality, you've raved about the screen quality, the port of the Switch 2 itself. How do you feel now you've had a chance to walk in the shoes of Hades 2 as it how it compares to your uh memories of Hades 1 in a similar scenario?
SPEAKER_04:Um I've sort of spoke about this a little bit, I think, last week on the solo. Um it is exactly what you would expect a really good sequel to be. So it's all what you especially if you love the first game. If the first game is an absolutely, you know, trailblazer in in that genre, which I think Hades was, this is not disagree. This is that again, and then they've added all these bits to it. So you still get great music, great controls, great graphics, nice little story that doesn't, you know, you don't have to be too invested in, but you can still, you know, it still gives you a point to aim at, but then they've got all these other little added bits in, and I've even now just got the fine I think it's the final um extra bit of equipment I can have, which is a fishing rod. Oh no.
SPEAKER_02:It is a 30-hour plus to a game's length while you catch that rare fishy wishy.
SPEAKER_04:Yeah, it's nothing like that, it's just literally the same as the others, they're just added in so you can uh grab extra bits of stone or for instance um fish or flowers, and then you can because you'll have a you'll you'll unlock spells to do in the cauldron as you as you go, and then you think, oh, so I need two of those lilies, I need that fish, I need that bit of iron, and then you can then save them up, come back, make that like at a moment I'm saving up to make a spell because there's an underworld and above world, and I I unlocked a spell to open the above world up. So I thought, I might go and have a look at that, and my health was just ticking down, tick, tick, tick, tick. I was like, what's going on? I'm not getting hit or anything, and then because they tell you the story that when you because you're a sort of uh uh mortal, you when you go above world, it ticks your life away quick, so you need a spell to make it sure that you can stay above the above world. So I'm now saving up to get that spell done so I can have a run through on the above worlds. There's all little bits of that all add into um the actual Hades you know game itself, and uh yeah, it's really good. I think it's brilliant. I think there's hours of content in there. Um nice, really good. Um, and just when you open up these new bits and new worlds and you see new enemies and new weapons, it's just really good. Um, but that's all I'll say on Hades 2 for now. I don't want people to get too overwhelmed.
SPEAKER_02:What other title have you been tickling under the chin, you sexual deviant of a gamer?
SPEAKER_04:Well, I had a couple of hours at the weekend and I I was talking to my mate about Red Dead, that's his favourite game of all time, original Red Dead, right?
SPEAKER_02:And I thought, do you know Revolver, Revolver, Red Dead Revolver of Red Dead Redemption?
SPEAKER_04:Red Dead Redemption.
SPEAKER_02:Yeah.
SPEAKER_04:And uh I thought, do you know what? I'm I was looking through my PS5 and thought, oh, the PS5 version of Red Dead is on the stuck on the plus. It is let's have a little look. So installed that took didn't that long at all. Started the that lovely cut scene where you're John and you're coming in on the train, and I started thinking, I tell you what, this looks very, very good. This isn't just a reskined, you know, PS3 game. This looks really good. Um it's hard to explain because it's it's not got those sort of angles and blurriness of a PS3 in textures, all that is sort of cleared up, but you know it's a PS3 game, does that make sense?
SPEAKER_02:I've dabbled with it, I've dabbled with the original very recently, uh, probably within the last probably four years ago now, but you know, time flies when you're having fun. Uh, but I've gone back to it on Switch, played a lot of it on there, and that's kind of like a halfway house between what we remembered on 360 PS3 and obviously maybe what we got on PS4 before this upgrade to PS5. It kind of sits in the middle to me, totally serviceable as it was. Uh, it was nice to see this upgrade drop for the Switch 2 version, for the PS4 to PS5 version. Obviously, Xbox is already well covered in regards to Red Dead Redemptions. Um so happy days for them. They're already living in the best world possible. But it was nice for the uh cheaper seats to get dragged up uh and get this polished up release, no question, no compromise on the latest systems. Um it's a story that needs to be told. I think anyone who finishes Red Dead 2 to completion and doesn't immediately, at least for curiosity's sake, pick up Red Dead 1 because it is actually bizarrely the prequel stroke continuation of the story from 2 and done in just a really classy way.
SPEAKER_04:It's the only way that's that's how the Haus Authority game, innit? They know how to uh you know the storytelling is always some of the credits of two and tell me you are not meant to immediately put it.
SPEAKER_02:Exactly.
SPEAKER_01:Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_02:Um now it's been I like I was saying to my beloved wife Rachel over the weekend. Uh one thing you've got to praise rock star for now. I know they get a lot of stick for it as well. Oh, they never really fancy up their games, they never really take their older games and flash them up. No, I I actually am starting to think that that might be a mistake. Let them be seen as they were on their original hardware. It would be like me taking Abbey Road by the Beatles and just completely refashioning it and lobbing it out there. It would feel not right, you know. Maybe, yeah, if to get the iconic feel of that, you should play it on a record player. Maybe, maybe so. Maybe that's why vinyl's rising because you want to say, yeah. Experience. I want to see what this game looked like. Then um, when we get into what I've been playing, I'll I'll dive a bit deeper on this. But I you know, I I'm starting to genuinely think that Rockstar's very gentle, touch-ups, supports, adapts. Yeah, they're a cash crab, no doubt about it. And then the ultimate cash crab, because I've barely spent any money doing it, but at least we get the raw product, and there's a lot to be said for that.
SPEAKER_04:And this is this is what I mean about this. For anyone that hasn't played this and you're thinking of playing Red Dead Redemption. Obviously, if you haven't got a seventh gen console, then this is the way to do it because it is it's very respectful of the original content, but it is you know us on a modern console, a 60 frames per second. This is what I would imagine they wanted to do when this was released and couldn't. So rather than making this all ray trace and everything else, they've just made it really clean, really smooth, really good. I still I think you still get a little bit of popping on draw distance. I haven't noticed it too much, but it looks fantastic. I couldn't believe it.
SPEAKER_02:It might be a game engine thing that they just can't work out, and why should they?
SPEAKER_04:It was in the original, exactly, and yeah, this is what I say, this is really good. And for being free, I mean I was tempted with my because Mrs. RGT bought me the physical of Red Dead Redemption on the Switch, so I was thinking about chucking that in the Switch 2 and doing that, but while I was on the PS5, I thought I'll just download this. I mean, it's not that, it's only not 19 gigs or something, so I thought I'll just quickly download it, and it didn't take many minutes to have a look, and I suddenly thought, oh, this does look good. This does I expected it just to be a bit cleaner, but it isn't, it's it does look really good.
SPEAKER_02:The only downside Yeah, for me, the only downside for that game, you didn't feel it in the moment, but you do feel it now. It was a transitionary product from the Red Dead Redemption we talked about in Flashy B to Red Dead Redemption 2 being the ultimate cowboy lifestyle simulator. There are still elements of one Red Dead Redemption, the original, where you're killing animals and it just feels a bit like an arcade shoot-up. You know, some of the sections there, the world isn't as lived in, the only kind of activity you can do is poker or horseshoes. And it was fine at the time, but when you go back to it now, that's the one thing I would note is I think I finished bullying and then went and literally won and dunned Red Dead Redemption off the back of it. And it felt it felt empty compared to bullying. But the narrative, the storyline, the cowboy simulator aesthetic, the graphics, the more dusty side of the Western world, which was thankfully kept, and they bolted it onto the map in Red Dead Redemption 2. Yeah, it it's it's it's a really it's a really nice piece of work.
SPEAKER_04:Yeah, and I think also that's that's the only bit I'd say from going from one to the other is Red Dead Redemption 2 felt more populated because of the technology that was on. Correct. But you're going to follow through to a newer game, which is slightly emptier, but as the natural progressor from that game, so it's a bit, but even so, and yeah, you're right with the hunting, the hunting does feel a bit of a trophy achievement hunter sort of side to it, where you you know, but even so, um, yeah, really good. Definitely the way to play nowadays, rather than going out and spend the your hard-earned money on a PS3 or an Xbox 360.
SPEAKER_02:Um, I suppose one thing more to say on that. If you finish, if you've played Red Dead 2 and you've gone, oh, I never played the first one, I'll play it now, and it is the ultimate lead-in to credits, is the ultimate smooth in to Red Dead 1. Is I think you'd be that kind of story focused. That the game in its kind of stripped down original format probably just serves as a way of just dragging you through to see the end of the story for the characters that you've been living with. And it happens if you focus on story as well, it happens quick. Yeah. So yeah, kudos. Where kudos necessarily isn't or wasn't deserved bizarrely.
SPEAKER_04:Yeah, so I'll uh probably be playing a bit more because I mean I've played through Red Dead a couple of times, two or three times, and I thought, I don't want to play this again, but just seeing it like it was, I thought, oh, I could play this again. And you've got Undead Nightmare on there as well, so it's a great way of playing that. Um, yeah, so and finally I have been playing more? Yeah, one more, yeah. It's a biggie wiggy. I've put quite what you got? I've been playing uh Super Nintendo title. Um put a few others in there.
SPEAKER_02:I know what this is, man.
SPEAKER_04:I know what this is, yeah. So I sent you a little screenshot over the weekend, said, Oh, guess the game. Um could I?
SPEAKER_02:No, no, it's been bats of dummy are refused, yeah.
SPEAKER_04:Um, but it was illusion of time, well slash illusion of gyre if you're you're stateside um from Enix um back in the day. I've been playing that. I've been playing it on the Retron on my big TV. Yes, I'm not on a CRT and original hardware, but I couldn't be bothered to dust all that off. So by the fire the ret and also it's got quick saves, so it's the game a lot easier.
SPEAKER_02:Spun the hell out of that bad boy.
SPEAKER_04:But if you haven't heard of it, it's one of those action RPGs by Enix back in the day, before it was Square Enix and everything. Um it's really good. It's for me, I'd say that's a cross between secret as secret of mana and a link to the past. It's like that Zelda with sort of that, but also a bit open as well with your with your adventuring. But I'll tell you what, it's really good.
SPEAKER_02:Really iconic box art as well, dude.
SPEAKER_04:Yes, yeah. Um, and I I started playing this because quite a few years ago, my brother-in-law gave me um a box full of goodies he'd got out of his loft, and there was three or four um uh Super Nintendo boxes, um, but didn't have the cartridges in. I'd lost the cartridges, so I've been buying the cartridges and making complete copies. And this was the next one I bought, which was a illusions of time. And I thought I'm gonna give this a look. Um, I'm absolutely loving it, it's brilliant. It plays really well. I love the upgrade system. I love um I love how you can in certain these special sort of time doors you go in, you can change to your your upgraded character and be really powerful to go through until you've done that level and and the story. And yeah, it's really good, really good. And I'm also loving the quick saves, you know. We're not hardcore gamers anymore, like we used to be. You know, you can't play through these games on one life, die, and then start it all again and play through 20 times.
SPEAKER_02:When you're using the quick save feature in a JRPG, are you just using it to pick up where you left off, like a quick save, or are you using it to sort of spam save between engagements? Like, what what what are you using it for?
SPEAKER_04:Um you do have saves in the game, which also like I remember sending you that picture, which really amazed me. I didn't even realise this had a battery backup memory in the cartridge. I put the cartridge in and the Rectron just went, Yep, I've dumped all the save files off, and there was someone's save files from back in '93 or four, whenever it was.
SPEAKER_01:Amazingly survived, isn't it? Really?
SPEAKER_04:Yeah, even though the battery's probably long gone and dead, the Rectron just automatically just takes the save straight off and saves it on there. So I had I got someone's game saved on there from years ago. But yeah, what I I always save, I save in-game as well. Um, but um, I save on the Rectron itself on this little hard drive, and basically what I do is as I go to a new area, get into a new um dungeon or anything like that, I save. If I get past the tricky bit, it's could me for two or three times. Once I get through it, I'll save. So because of because of how uh few and far between the actual in-game saves are, you could go back quite a way, maybe even 40 minutes, 45 minutes. So I make sure I save regularly, so I'm literally as where I left off, and are so easy to do. You can make limitless save points, and you just press on on your controller. I'm using a super nintendo controller. Um, you just you just do down and start, press them together, it brings it up. You press save state, bang, done, carry on. Takes two seconds, if that. Um, and then when if you want to load one, you just do the same, bring it up, load state, load it, bang, go back to where you were. So when you start the game, it's the same thing. You just file a game up, which is pretty instant, it just dumps the ROM. Same thing. Um, start and down, and then it just go to the save state you had on lot number one, number two, number three, whatever. Click it, bang, away you go. So that's that quick and easy, you know, it's not complicated, and it's just easy to do it. And then I've been using on the screen, I've been having the highest quality I can, but with scan lines, so you get that crossover CRT, but also uh, you know, nice bright graphic.
SPEAKER_02:So don't you ever worry that scan lines are gonna irreparably damage your TV?
SPEAKER_04:Never thought of it like that, no. Can they? Okay.
SPEAKER_02:Maybe.
SPEAKER_04:Or have you just made that up?
SPEAKER_02:Well, screen burner's a thing. I didn't make that up, did I?
SPEAKER_04:Not on modern TVs, is it screen burner? It was on the old ones, plasmas and stuff. I don't know about modern TVs.
SPEAKER_02:I think if you constantly were playing that on there, I think it would cause an issue.
SPEAKER_04:Oh really?
unknown:Well, well.
SPEAKER_02:But you don't constantly play it, do you?
SPEAKER_04:No, no, no, no.
SPEAKER_02:So I think you'd be totally fine. You're putting you putting other coloured pixels through that at different points in time in the day. Yeah. If it was just some bizarre little retro device, have a lot of uh.
SPEAKER_04:I honestly didn't realise screen burn was still a thing. I thought as far as I'm aware still. I thought that was more on when the rear projection was shining onto the Oh no.
SPEAKER_02:Oh no. Oh no. Well, message in if you've got any uh if you think I'm talking absolute horse twaddle. I would say I am expressing some caution to say I think you know it it's not an excessive issue anymore. But uh questions at unofficialcontroller podcast dot com. If you want to put me right and I'll stand up stark naked and apologise rather than a YouTube video, should it be required? Uh please write in.
SPEAKER_04:Please, please write in.
SPEAKER_02:Oh, please.
SPEAKER_04:Make sure he's wrong.
SPEAKER_02:Let's get those, let's get those. view of figures up to double numbers, right?
SPEAKER_04:But yes, so um that is pretty much all I've been playing. So it's uh over to you George and what have you been playing sit down hold tight because there's a lot to say here but not a lot of time.
SPEAKER_02:Okay so PS5 activity gold rush the game not much more to say there other than I've already said a couple of weeks ago. You're still you're still you're still flogging that dead horse there aren't you with that game at this point dude it looks like a bot of uh pot of Evo stick that I'm flogging it's that far gone as a horse it's literally glue fair play to you fair play uh and you know I am not finding much love on any current gen at the moment but I do believe that I go through these cycles where I kind of I become unsurprised by modern gaming I become unfulfilled with the graphical fidelity I'm I I don't appreciate it enough because we've we and I think there's a lot to be said because we've said all this this this year and this gen's been a bit of a bust but there's a lot to be said for Fat Dumb and Happy who's had PS5 since launch day who's had no aspiration at all for either wanting the console or any aspiration at all for restriction on the games he's gonna get there's been no question. I've been a little as I said about you I've been a little biggy with the PS5. I've had my head buried that deep in the trough I've got no idea what's going on around me. The only time I popped up for air was to bury my head then deep further into the switch trough blah blah blah blah blah locking out give me everything all at once 4K baby and I think that there becomes a point in time where you just don't appreciate what you've got so I've been spending some time and obviously some uh research efforts going back as really far as is comfortable which is PS2. I draw the line at PS1 at the moment but you never know uh and I've been playing through there now here's a quick round robin a game I've always had on the shelf never took too seriously um but always was saving for a rainy day Scarface on the PS2 that is an impressive piece of work from a graphical fidelity point of view from a sound design point of view from a gameplay point of view it's really really quite special now when I first put it in here's a confession I know this show is called the unofficial controller podcast and we talk about making do with the worst and all that sort of stuff it was during my playthrough of Scarface where my favourite little see through red PS2 controller I happened to question to myself how can all these games be like this you know I've struggled through game I'll come back to you I remember when I said to you uh probably a year or two ago oh getaway mate oh that's hard by modern day standards yeah I'm really struggling with that the controls are like all over the place well I dusted off the newest PS2 controller I've got to try and put this demon to bed um now this one's a silver PS2 dual shop too obviously pristine condition I don't think it's really ever been used I plugged this in suddenly Scarface is a different game feels like I'm playing it on a PS5 almost the car will stay straight on the road I don't need to constantly hee hoar at the controls I don't need to be stabbing at the X button this is strange this is stranger now you see why use a retro fighter's defender well we may go further down this rabbit hole because I turned to Rachel immediately said can you Google Brook Brook Brookman Wingman can you do that now? I'm not ready to plunge there because I do like the original hardware feel of the wired controller etc etc but this new controller so the red one's on ice I need to take it apart and hammer it with the show sponsor the Silver Hook electrical contact cleaner available in all boutique and low price uh poundland basically I thought you were gonna say some really expensive hardware store pound basically darling hook made in Britain britt British quality so probably garbage but you take I'll take the play that PlayStation control apart and I'll give it a good lousy and I'll clean it out or clean the contacts on the pad because one of the other things that was happening that the button wasn't connecting as and when I wanted it to uh for a triangle which is I think I don't know I can't remember now I've been playing that many different games 20 year old what it's wedged in there somewhere and probably half a tin of diet coke or cherry coke a little bit of pepperoni pizza wedged in under the contact luckily it's see-through so I can perhaps there's no foodstuffs in there if there was it would look like that forgotten Tupperware that you packed yourself up with that day and then forgot was under your passenger seat for five years. Until you smelt it yeah just got off and walked off on his own the power of Tupperware mate means that you can have a dead animal in there and not know about it. It's absolutely joyous there are large Tupperwares and there are small tupperwares. Anyway I won't linger too long on uh Scarface to talk about a game that uh I completely misjudged originally by the way that's why I have never really dallied with it. Now I've dallied with it I'm nothing but impressed it is a bit derivative don't get me wrong I think there's elements of it that I'm sure that younger versions of us would have loved like the balls meter where you taunt people when they've died which rats up Tony's balls which then lets him do insane things within the game uh yeah I don't quite that's a mechanic of the of the era yeah it it sure is and the intro as well was like set to a modern heavy metal rock track and it was during this moment of just a general malaise for me that I saw Ricky Gervais's name pop up on pop up on the screen and I was like you know Scarface the game for PS2 and Original Xbox quite the property really quite the frickin' property I've yet to meet him in game but I'm looking for I know he's in GTA four but I didn't realize but is he in GTA four I think he's in GTA 5.
SPEAKER_04:No GTA 4 he does a stand up comedy show you can go and watch him is that for I'm googling now you carry on.
SPEAKER_02:Okay I will the other game I played as revealed early a little bit of a spoiler has been um the getaway now with the rejuvenated controls and the success of Scarface I decided to try getaway the getaway is quite honestly a fantastic product I see why it got the reviews it got at the time um but I'm enjoying it and I think time has actually been very kind and a working joypad has been quite the boon if I'm honest with you where was Ricky Jevase located GTA 4 it's in the comedy club you see I've played through that recently I said to Rachel oh you know I'm sure I've watched Ricky Jevais on the TV I don't we'll go watch his stand up in town and I drove up and down street and I've not come up and mate I even got the guide out and looked and couldn't see comedy club listed at all so where is he?
SPEAKER_04:He's in because there was Chris Rock as well right was the was it him or there was an old there was another if Ricky Gervais wasn't on there was another comedian that was on yeah and there was a magician as well and someone else I've been to the club and done the like the I can't remember it's called the Starlight Rooms or something I have been there and my last playthrough I went two or three times and couldn't see Ricky Gervais I think it's done on pot luck when he comes up I wondered whether I thought myself he was in five after all that yeah no he's in four but I didn't see him this time and I wondered because I'd updated my PS3 and there was an update for the game do you think there was some sort of licensing or he's been removed I don't know but yeah he was definitely in four that's a good point because I he used to appear on the TV quite a lot from the very first island you could flick around on the TV and eventually would come up.
SPEAKER_02:That's why I convinced myself it was obviously not four because all the other channels Galactic Space Rangers the knife show the what lifestyle of the rich and famous the history of trust me mate I've watched a lot of GTA 4 TV it's one of my favourite things one of my favourite things is to get a taxi and look out the window my other favourite thing to do is to sit in my apartment or whatever it is and watch the in-game TV weirdo admittedly but it's my personal ponchon but you're our weirdo I will always be your weirdo there you go free weirdo get any weirder than that does it um so the getaway listen do you know what I'm impressed all of a sudden not using my favoured PS2 controller these PS2 games suddenly become very workable enjoyable titles I'm getting like I found out when I got my defender controller and you could use it on and it works on PS1 PS2 PS3 and you suddenly play games thinking I don't remember the controls being this smooth and then actually maybe it's the controller. Yeah and I really you know historically when a controller came into the collection it was stripped down cleaned and put back together and you know done as best as I could maybe this one skipped a clean or maybe there's something wrong with it I don't know. And it's the one I would always go to because it's it's see through it's red man it's cool of course I'm gonna use that one I'm not gonna use the black one I'm not gonna use the silver one I'm gonna use this one. That was a mistake. So anyway the getaway really enjoyed it I'm probably about three quarters of the way through that it's been a blast it's been a blast the only thing I would say is it's tough I remember it being tough I don't I remember it being tough but I've played it through this time and it's been a cakewalk is strong George actually it's very strong but not ever stuck to the point of frustration.
SPEAKER_04:And also I'll tell you what one of the most impressive things is Mike Race's car designs in there because the cars look very good for a PS2.
SPEAKER_02:Every let's just take a little bit of time to talk about this for a second because graphically there's no UI on the screen. Now that was frustrating to us at the time but now when you view it you can appreciate it more now I do still think the times where uh whatever his name is I can't remember his name now he leans on the wall and makes noises of a man being filated for 10 or 15 minutes somehow that heals his wounds gunshots direct to the chest and he's able to continue on I'll be honest with you the slight mumbled groans of a man are a little disconcerting but you know whatever um it doesn't take you out the game per se you're not picking up a first aid kit but I would argue lean leaning on the wall for a minute is just as game breaking as picking up a first aid kit. Yeah I'm just gonna put it out there the other thing that's quite frustrating and I I had to research this to make sure I wasn't remembering it wrong that the indicators on the car now they're used to navigate you around the city. Now that's a very slick very intrusive UI design. I think it's flawless but but that element of the game is very broken. It sends you the wrong way down one-way streets yeah which causes issues so you need to check the lane before you turn down it but then you start to panic because the light flashes more that whole section of the game causes it to be a lot harder than it needs to be you need to kind of ignore the indicator. When I followed the indicator religiously I was the wrong way down one way roads which makes it harder to chase it it very much hardens the game and I also think it lengthens the game as well if you choose to follow it religiously and not as you play through as I'm playing through I'm kind of unfortunately have to drive through London on not regular occasions but on today I've been down there. And you kind of know where places are and you kind of figure it out so they've nailed that element of it but if you to solely follow the indicator you make the game so much more difficult than it needs to be. If you kind of follow your nose a bit more and roughly know which direction to go in once you're going with the traffic and abusing the bus lanes I said to Rachel last night if this game came out today this would activate me driving in the bus lane would get a the equivalent of a five star wanted level more than rear-ending this other dude. Yeah all the fines would be racking up but there was one section and this is where I was going to in my rambly story is where I um came up to some traffic lights rear-ended a car the back window put out and put glass on the floor and it punted forward in like it felt like we both said this it felt like we were watching police camera action there was no UI the noise of the impact the car then coming across on the T junction and taking said car that I'd punted out at the same time it just all unfolded and there's something about the signage as well the BT van I think we've just done that level where you take the BT van you go into the cop shop and I mean that was enjoyable it was super easy but it was such a nice sort of gameplay experience. There was a couple of times where I died but the exploration meant that the next time I went in I knew exactly where I needed to be and exactly what I needed to do. So yeah there's I I I say to anyone dust it off it's a curio for 10 minutes but there's a there's a little bit more there if you want to but the story as well I I forgot how brutal it is a brutal story it is a brutal story.
SPEAKER_04:It's a it that game I mean you can see why Mike Graves and the team won BAFTAs for this because it was way ahead of us time. I mean taking the HUD out they had this vision of more of a movie you're playing you actually are playing a move and you are playing like a lock stock and two smoking barrels that's one thing I want to talk about it is not a comedy oh no no no it's it's it's I I mean on the gangster front it's it's dark yeah it's very dark it's it's a real world gangster sort of film but it is even when you go back now yes you've got to take into the time it was made um which it still looks very good for but if you were never into the PS2 you'd go back now a bit and go oh yeah but you've got to think of the time um oh don't forget I mean yeah this probably came out around the time of Vice City but it took them until at least Scarf base to get graphics of that quality again.
SPEAKER_02:Yeah because no disrespect to G like full disrespect to getaway there is nothing else to do other than the missions within the game. Yes yeah kudos to Vice Cities there's lots of things to do yeah outside of the game kudos to getaway for looking as good as it looks and actually now holds up at the time it didn't fare well against Rockstar's offerings because it didn't have the depth but it had the graphical fidelity. Now time's moved on the graphical fidelity has done the getaway so much good um so we'll leave that there but there's a couple of other games that I've been playing Lord of the Rings to Two Towers Rachel's a big Lord of the Rings fan so we've given that a bit of a bash um still impressive at times when the game fades between the game and the movie and then the movie to the game but uh time is starting to weaken that effect I think it's better in Return of the King uh there's been a couple of times in two towers where it's gone from the film to like this washed out PS2 thing like it's there's a few games used to do that back in the day I think the Harry Potters did a little bit as well and you'd and you'd think oh yes I'm in the movie and then that'd slide into the graphics and you go yeah he didn't look like that a minute when they did it right it was good. There's certain times where I thought if they'd just done it on that black screen which wasn't the movie and then it had gone to the game I would say that's a good idea yeah well you actually cut what a movie does and goes into that yeah goes into the next bit but you know I guess there were time pressures and the other game that I've been playing is a bit of a Resident Evil clone. Again this is all kind of research for Flashy B and to desensitise myself to modern graphics and a bid to over Christmas go back and be absolutely blown away by the pro version of Death Stranded and Yo Tai so I'm well I'm waiting and if I force myself to look at the getaway for long enough anything's gonna look great. So on top of that there's the X Files game a lot to be said about that it it's a it's a wonderful product um I've never played that I've been a licensed sort of it's it's it's a resi clone but probably closer to Code Veronica in terms of the way you drive the character through the screen it's not exactly it's not exactly tank controls. But it's that halfway house of tank controls that we got in Code Veronica. Okay yeah yeah I know what you mean yeah yeah it's acceptable it's acceptable it's that classic thing of you push into one screen and then you're walking down the other if you hold the controller forward your character will move forward but if you stop for a moment then pull down your character will still continue moving down. So it's one of those transitional yeah it's one of those transitional ones where if if you don't move the control it'll let you get away with it but obviously if you then take a moment to pause and then pull down it will still continue moving in the other bar it's it's one of those the the remake Resi Zero not the remake Resident Zero and the remake of one use a similar control method.
SPEAKER_04:But it's got all the good XWIS stuff on it it's got the voice acting on it it is a Resi clone for want of a better word so there are some rough and smooth but it's very ex-Wilesy and I think if I'm honest with you that draws quite the line under our gaming activity RGT so I guess that means that we need to don our pork pies with the word press tucked in the rim anyway let's get full let's get full gaming giant o news type characters uh time for the news this we got the very darkest readers of the internet to bring you the latest stories first up RGT what have you brought to teacher today are you going to get an apple a pat on the head a tap on the buttocks or I don't know what school you went to a bit of time in timeout probably knowing little RGT a bit of time in time out um but you've obviously screwed from your memory the tap on the buttocks I don't want to go there um this is over from um this is over on push square um from Stephen Tolby this is deeply concerning GTA dev's alleged union busting has now reached the UK Prime Minister Rockstar to be officially investigated. Oh my god I know Rockstar Games has been in the news lately not just because it's working on the biggest game on the horizon GTA Stick but also because it abruptly fired tens of staff members. Tens. It's a move that off um that those affected are claiming is union busting and it's led to protests and pleas and a bid to reinstate the fired workers back in the studio. Rockstar put out statement on the matter saying the people affected were let go due to disturbing um no sorry distributing and discussing confidential information in a public forum and that and that it had nothing to do with any involvement with a union. However, the situation has caused such a stir that it's reached the UK government. Chris Murray, MP for Edinburgh East and Musselburgh, raised the topic during Prime Minister's questions today. The video games company Rockstar in my constituency last month fired 31 employees without providing evidence or union representation, he said. The Independent Workers Union of Great Britain and the Great Britain Union uh WGB alleges union busting having met Rockstar they failed to reassure me that they are following employment law and I share concerns about union busting. After bringing this up UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer provided response calling it a deeply concerning case in his comments. Every worker has the right to join a trade union and we're determined to strengthen workers' rights and ensure they don't face unfair consequences for being part of a union he said our ministers will look into the particular case that he, Brackets Murray, raises and will keep him updated. In a statement provided to IGN Murray gave more detail about his attempts to discuss the matter with Rockstar. The meeting began with us as MPs refusing entry unless an NDA was signed, a request they eventually withdrew after it being made clear this would not be signed. The meeting only entrenched my concerns about the process Rockstar used to dismiss so many of their staff members. I was not assured their process paid robust attention to UK employment law. I was not convinced that this course of action was necessary and alarmingly I did not leave informed on exactly what these 31 people had done to warrant their immediate dismissal. So it seems Rockstar isn't out of the woods yet as it now faces even higher levels of scrutiny. GTA 6 is currently slated to release on the 19th of November 2026 after a delay around the same time as the aforementioned firings. Now then George I've got a few things to say on this well I was going to say do you think this is warranted?
SPEAKER_02:Do you think this is company or do you think MPs should be saying well out of this or let me give you my thoughts as we go as you went through the article here's my first thought oh what Keir Starmer I mean we're not a political show no but the Prime Minister famous for doing absolutely nothing the Labor Party famously for workers that do absolutely nothing for workers and don't really listen to the unions anymore.
SPEAKER_04:And like you say we're not political but you don't need to tell me what Keir Starmer does not do for the unions believe me I know that forefront but anyway carry on so I find all this a little bit weird.
SPEAKER_02:I think if I was Rockstar, take two whatever the call the parent company's called I can't remember anymore but let's say it's rockstar for argument's sake. T what here we won't launch if if you've got an issue with this what we won't do is we won't launch the biggest entertainment product for the last decade in the UK because that's an awful lot of 20% VATs you will not be seeing palpanio chefe batchobot and also the corporate tax we won't be paying here because we'll put it all through the New York office. Are we cool in me dismissing these 10 guys or are we not cool in me dismissing these 10 guys? Because I can't work it out. Equally so if it transpires that Rockstar also, as my thoughts came up, an MP has an issue signing an NDA walking into a building where they're designing the biggest entertainment project in the history of man, which cost more than the Birj Khalifa itself and will generate six times the Birj Khalifa's revenue within seven days of its launch that's someone that doesn't understand what they're doing in that place because anyone who walks with MDOR signs an NDA so I'm not quite sure what his issue is with signing one. I don't you're an MP so immediately you wouldn't say to your kids what you saw potentially when you went into Rockstar. I tell you you wouldn't start snapping with your phone then when they get mardy with you say well I didn't sign an NDA so what's it matter to you?
SPEAKER_04:It's it's obvious that he doesn't know what an NDA is he thinks oh no you're trying to shit you're trying to keep me quiet.
SPEAKER_02:Nope that's just so you don't spread about what they're making you could really cause a lot of damage by going in there and all the surprises that normally come with a rockstar release that make it special because we didn't know that was in it and oh my god can you believe you can do that um I mean the chances of him working out what he had seen or whatever but if we walked by and just saw someone doing something within a game and said and while I was there I saw this on the screen what if that was like a real bombshell of a thing? So I understand an NBA but I don't understand why he wouldn't sign it. The discussion inside there's been a lot of noise about this being a union busting move. And if it is well we know that unions aren't popular in games gaming because there are a lot of restrictions to unions that would stop the crunch as an example which I know the employees are against but I know there's been a lot of hullaboo hullabaloo and Rockstar have worked seemingly hard in their own admission so we don't know to reduce crunch but I've heard a few commentators and a few games developers say like but the crunch is the element of what makes the game good at the end. It's where we all get together and have to crunch down to make it happen to make it be everything we wanted it to be to get it out. Do you want to have Red Dead Redemption 2 on your CV or do you not want to because you have to do six months of crunch because you've only got to have designed a tree in Red Dead 2 and you could rock up at any studio and they'd take you seriously so is it worth it? Same for Naughty Dog they're also under pressure for crunch but hang on you designed Abby's shoulder muscle in Last of Us Part 2. Oh yeah well hang on a minute all of a sudden I've got to take this guy quite serious this guy or girl quite seriously so I think there's some element of crunch required. There's an element of protecting staff for sure and I for one know there is no crunch at the there's no long hours at the beginning of a project because they aren't re they aren't really required as you're building the passion and you're sticking the ideas on your nude board. That's totally cool that's the laissez faire kind of artist thing they signed up for the crunch comes after unfortunately when you've got to take those ideas and turn them into code that's hard. And it'll always be hard. So I kind of understand why unions are frowned upon but I also see from a workers' rights point of view why union would be required because I think some people feel a bit under the kosh but then again I should imagine the bonus payment from Red Dead Redemption 2 alone would probably put a smile on your face on that dark night when you work in at three in the morning. I don't know I don't know we're talking big numbers though RGT we're talking remuneration on the scale of something that would make people very happy I would imagine if you're a test and maybe not maybe your portion of that share isn't that great. But so I see both sides of the story from the uni and non-unionization. It's allegedly not even part of the discussion in this scenario what the discussion is is did they or did they not share publicly undisposable content because of their contracts on a public forum? Yes or no where's the no where's the research in that because surely forum boom we can go to it it's date stamps and time and it's got date stamps and times there'll be pictorial evidence or post deleted with the username we're not talking Sherlock Holmes here.
SPEAKER_04:Tell me did they or did they share this stuff on a public forum or no yeah and for me in this I I'm not saying by any means I'm not I'm sitting on a fence here I'm not saying Rockstar you always do. No but the thing that gets me with this is I mean whether Rockstar right or wrong right for me this is beside the point yes 31 people lost their jobs I feel sorry for them we don't know if they done wrong or did right I don't think this is a union thing at the end of the day what really gets me is why are Keir Starmer and this MP bringing this up because one of the biggest employers in this country was lying people off for no other reason only a few years ago and they were not interested but a games company in Scotland lays off 31 people and they're all over it like a rash would this be anything to do with publicity because it's the biggest game in the world?
SPEAKER_02:Yeah one of the biggest developers in the world or is there some form of an eye to saying we need a percentage to pay for your prime of staff harm?
SPEAKER_04:Yeah so if the loc if the local TV shop down the road or the the you know the the hardware store that's quite big you know say a B and Q or anything like that you know no names or anything like that but you know what I mean a big store if they laid 31 people off in his constituency would he be here in the House of Parliament speaking about it? No he would not be he's speaking about this because it is because it's the biggest thing being spoken about at the moment and they what are seem to be getting some goods.
SPEAKER_02:I don't think it's even a publicity thing. Do you know I think it is I think a cash unicorn walked into town and they're scrambling for an idea of how they're going to get one percent of it because one percent of that is big cash. Yeah yeah hang on we've they've done nothing else wrong but there's this little scenario you'd think it'd be nothing but 30 staff alleged to be about unions oh really really really suddenly there's half of a talon in them isn't there ripping at the silk purse it's disgusting as if they're not making enough money out of them yeah yeah outrageous this is what gets me because any other firm of 31 people laid off which I would imagine has happened quite regularly around this how many firms of total 31 people have gone bust in the last six months and no one's cared.
SPEAKER_04:Exactly but it's a hundred percent loss of a workforce not 2% I not I say it was only a few years ago one of the biggest employees in this country was laying people off for no reason at all and matting people's lives very very hard and Keir Starmer was not interested in that at all even though the union for that firm was paying percentages into his Labour Party he never stood up for them those people once so this is a bit weird when 31 are laid off and they're suddenly all over it.
SPEAKER_02:This is the most controversial we've ever been on this show and I think for that reason we should draw a line on it and get back to the games and take us on a I'm gonna take us on a whimsical journey RGT because on that whimsical journey let's get off this I feel I feel dirty in a way um I feel filthy because we've taught politics and I I I think it completely wrong that's a one off never do it again half of our listeners no all of our listeners just gone no mum's still listening aren't you mum? Mum her dad was a toolmaker RGT personal so now no one's listening yeah oh well uh over here at uh father son and the holy ghost it's the pure Xbox trifecta complete you handsome devil Halo 3 wins game of the year as GameStop reveals its full set of awards for 2025 yes this is a thing that happened said old Fraser Gilbert really pure Xbox is shining light of journalism let's be said all one and done uh he goes on to say of all the games we expected to see winning a Game of the Year award for 2025 Halo 3 wasn't one of them. Nevertheless the classic 2007 Xbox shooter has just been awarded the title by none other than GameStop I love all this. In a six minute video it revealed that Battlefield 6 Donkey Kong Banza Ghost of the Yota and Halo 3 were up for GameStop's game of the year with Halo 3 crowned as best game of the year for 18th year in a row now oh look out uh so there is a video for you to check out of course uh now it's all very silly but the awards themselves are a mix of serious and not so serious stuff for example GameStop itself won the Game Store of the Year award but then Claire Obscure Edition 33 won best Xbox game GTA 6 won most anticipated game and Fortnite won of all things comeback of the year really yeah you can check how does that work just just just just embrace it you can check you didn't question Halo 3 but you put me up for that I know that's mad in it like I say we needed the whimsy after that you can check out the videos for all these on the GameStop Twitter or X account you call it what you like I don't really care if you're interested um but uh for now we'll leave you a list of winners are you ready? Comeback of the year Fortnite scariest game of the year no I'm not human best Pokemon card of the year is Charizard we've got best Nintendo game of the year is Donkey Kong Bonanza quite right too uh creator of the year is Crix Kenshin Shiny Hunter of the Year is Saucer McGavin uh PlayStation game of the year was Claire Obscure edition 33 worst game of the year was Nintendo Switch welcome tour the game I only had to put more than two hours into because I was busy that of the year Hades 2 was the winner best Call of Duty skin was Jay Trade of the Year was Bobcat Best Xbox game of the year was the aforementioned Claire Obscura edition Expedition 33 most anticipated game of the year the aforementioned UTA6 Game Store of the year the aforementioned GameStop that's funny again game of the year is Halo 3. Obviously it's all bit tongue in cheek and as uh RGT confirmed for me it was the immortal Scot the was I saw in the videos I remember that guy he's he's he's got a little bit of my sense of humour about him definitely yeah I I enjoy the fact that he does not take himself or his content too seriously at all while still taking it seriously enough to endow me with so much factoid yeah my head feels like it's going to explode. He's one of them that downplays how knowledgeable he is and how much he is and I'm laughing yeah exactly he he he always shows his stuff sort of thrown loose on the floor but he's got a lot of stuff that he throws loose on the floor. So uh yeah Scott and he's he's into kind of the niffnaff and trivia and dark corners of tech that kind of always intrigue me as well so I find that whole series quite interesting I like the fact that GameStop have got their tongue firmly pressed in their cheek with these awards I love the fact that Halo 3 has won again. 18 years on the drop I love for a nod to um Kalaro Skewer I think that's a that's a really good nod uh especially PlayStation with that now have you played that George no I haven't I spoke to Seb about it a couple of episodes ago and I'm very intrigued I was thinking about maybe thinking about getting it for Rachel's little Christmas treat see if she might be into it. But but but but the only thing that puts me off is it's not turn based it is turn based it's not really though it's got like a it's got a timing mechanism to it South Park. Yes spot on yeah yes it has got that sort of deflect to me that's a bit of a bar to entry because when it puts to you I think you're cool but I think to someone who likes JRPGs or light gaming the pressure of having to press that of the right and as I said to Seb it's so critical to get right and get the right amount of damage on the cat on the on the enemy that not hitting it is a significant issue in the game.
SPEAKER_04:But I did read they've got quite a wide range of levels you can play the game at the end I just I just want to see it as a stripped out JRPG straight up would be my dream.
SPEAKER_02:Anyway I I appreciate it for what it is I'm also quite intrigued so it might be one of those presents that you buy for someone else you could really buy for yourself. Does your wife need a snap on toolbox full of thousand pieces tools? Absolutely not Carlos but she's got it coming you know she said she needed a Phillips boom 25 grand of tools sat on the on the front lawn.
SPEAKER_01:There you go job done everyone's a winner.
SPEAKER_04:Everyone's a winner baby I've watched too many adverts you know that don't you yes and they they stay in your your mind because you'll rattle off adverts from about 1988.
SPEAKER_02:I only talk through the meaning of adverts everything you hear from me is something arranged from an advert that I've heard that's important.
SPEAKER_04:Problem is you spread that on to me because I've started doing that at work when I hear a song that was used in an advert but it was cleverly reconstructed I start and no one knows like the other day they had the song Bits and Pieces on the radio and I went oh bits of pizza anyone remember bits of pizza and all you on about I was like pizza no no one remember this no no no what about this bits of this bits of that put them all together and what do you got bits of pieces bits of bobs bad I recognise that what's that I don't know it's just it's the word it's hit me square in the chest I think it's a program called Bits and Bobs or something like that on children's BBC or the broom cupboard era of BBC Bits of this bits of that put them all together I'm one of the pieces bits and bobs bad pieces I probably just did it absolutely perfect.
SPEAKER_02:Harvey retro sync do a video retro ed someone with skill do a video of me singing this overlaid with the with the subtitles on the video on YouTube now perfect we have digressed a little bit I will say I'm here for the last bit of news I turned up naked covered in Tarama Salata waiting to be devoured like a meal what's going down because it's getting it's getting a bit sticky yeah well this is over on Nintendo Life um funny enough why are you leaving me hanging like this what didn't even listen to what you said no you obviously didn't because I I made a reference to one of your favourite shows I put myself out there I humbled myself when you listen back to this when you're editing you're gonna send me a text and say I'm so sorry. I clicked on Nintendo Life and completely lobotomised myself.
SPEAKER_04:No I was I was just I was being professional and queuing up my next section of work um I could hear you waffle but I didn't know what you were saying. Probably that's probably most listeners uh I have a co-host so people can have someone to listen to I think you're right I have heard that a lot in solos are just an intelligible mess of random thoughts we switch off and then we get the news then we switch off again and then we get a bit more news brutal Anywho, I mean Negrendo Lock.
SPEAKER_02:Green sleeves, green finch, green, green, it is green out. Green fingers.
SPEAKER_01:Bits of this, bits of that. Is he not the same?
SPEAKER_04:I think that's a different show. We'll we'll look into this for next week. Not that anyone's interested.
SPEAKER_02:This is flashy B content. I've blown out of the main show. I don't know what's wrong with me. All my content has been flashy B content so far.
SPEAKER_04:We'll be doing we'll be doing Flashy B and you'll be talking about uh Claire Obscure. Gold Rush. Anyway, Nintendo Life. Over on Nintendo Life, this is by Ollie Reynolds. Uh Digital Foundry delivers its tech verdict on Red Dead Redemption for Switch 2. That's quite a brand.
SPEAKER_02:Hang on, mate. You can't do you can't do the third story without saying the holy trifector.
SPEAKER_04:I did say it before, but obviously you won't listen to what I was saying. That's what I do. You only have me as a co-host of people who got exactly because they don't want to listen to me. This is role reversal. It's really weird. It's not a parallel world here. Um slam it, flip it, reverse it.
SPEAKER_02:Put your flan down, flip it. Which I can't even say anymore.
SPEAKER_03:Put your flan down.
SPEAKER_02:Flip it and reverse it. Is it worth it?
SPEAKER_04:Anywho, Red Dead.
SPEAKER_02:What's going on here, mate?
SPEAKER_04:He's now out for switch to delivering an updated version of the acclaimed Wild West romp. Romp's a bit strong.
SPEAKER_02:That's how I'd describe a carry-on movie.
SPEAKER_04:Yeah, I was gonna say, I don't know where romp comes into. But anyway, calm down, Ollie. Um, we've already provided our own glowing nine out of ten.
SPEAKER_01:You tell him RGT!
SPEAKER_04:But now the lovely chaps at Digital Foundry have gone into even more depth as as to what you can expect from the world. He's robbing a story. Anyway, Rob directly we give to the poor, that's what we do here at the UC. Yeah. Just in case you ain't got the internet, you you can listen to the story here. Anyway, Digital Foundry have gone into even more depth as to what you can expect from a graphical and performance point of view. Starting off with performance, Red Dead Redemption runs a mostly stable 60 frames per second with minor dips present in armoured armor dill. Crunching the side in the middle.
SPEAKER_01:I need to say, I need to I need to listen to me.
SPEAKER_02:Advert. I need a picture of John Linneman and the t-shirt saying, I'm the real victim here. God, you're done.
SPEAKER_03:It's a bit front. Right, are you done now?
SPEAKER_02:I've seen that through to its logical, humorous conclusion. I think we're done. Right. Yeah. Tell me about the frames per second. Tell me about your murument.
SPEAKER_04:No, I was talking about Armadillo as an old advert. Can you remember that? Oh, it was. Crunch on the outside, soft in the middle. Armadillo. Who was that? Was that for like Dying Bar? So Harry Enfield and Dyne Bar or something. It was, mate, yeah. Armadillo! Yeah. Crunch on the outside, soft in the middle. Yeah. Starting off with performance, Red Dead Redemption runs at a mostly stable 60 frames per second, with minor dips present in Armadillo and Blackwater, particularly when playing the Undead Nightmare add-on. For the most part, however, you can expect lovely smooth gameplay with very infrequent interruptions. Looking more closely at the visuals, the game's textures and world design remain pretty much the same as those found on Switch 1. However, while DOC, the Switch 2 version utilizes the DLSS to achieve a more detailed 1440p resolution from a native 720p. There's much less flickering going on with the foliage while objects off in the far distance have reduced aliasing. Meanwhile, 2D assets such as the in-game map are much more detailed thanks to the high resolution, while shadows appear slightly more realistic than on the original Switch. There are still a few lingering issues, mind you. Some textures will flicker and pop in slightly, which Digital Foundry notes is disappointing given the age of the original game, while shadow quality in handheld mode is noticeably worse than compared to docked. To be honest, the issues mentioned seem minor. That is unlikely to cause any issues for the average player with a nice boost up to 60 frames per second and much improved resolution thanks to DLSS. It seems Red Dead Redemption on Switch 2 has proven to be a success. So yeah, so even the Switch 2 version seems to be um is the switch one to two version a free upgrade, or is it paid upgrade?
SPEAKER_02:Because I think there's some confusion here. I got confused. If you've got it digital, I think there's a free upgrade, but if you've got it physical, there's a paid upgrade. Is that right? Something like that. Really? It might be true.
SPEAKER_04:I'm sure when I was I've only got the physical Red Dead Redemption on my Switch 1. And did you do the upgrade? I haven't done it yet. Leave it with me and I will try the upgrade.
SPEAKER_02:I have it, and I was thinking of trying it, but I'm sure I read on the how can you do that?
SPEAKER_04:Why can you only why can you only have an upgrade if it's a file out?
SPEAKER_02:Maybe you need to buy extra files when you do it the other way.
SPEAKER_04:Or so look, you don't then lend it to a friend who gets it for free, and then someone else gets it for free, and then so maybe you're locked in on that display.
SPEAKER_02:Oh, by the way, while we've slept, there's also been an upgrade for Skyrim on the switch one to switch to BTW.
SPEAKER_04:Yeah, I didn't uh yeah, I've only seen a few videos on that. I don't know if it's that great or not, or it's been mixed reviews of things.
SPEAKER_02:I think it's acceptable. I think there's a few kind of niggly little glitches that again.
SPEAKER_04:It's Skyrim, though, isn't it?
SPEAKER_02:Yeah, exactly. But Skyrim um Digital Foundry switched up to a certain element, and a few of the people who do these kind of comparison, deep dive frame rate, graphical fidelity, bits and bobs. You know, they've made good bank out of doing these kind of deep technological investigations. And and from a user point of view or a you know a service that they provide, it's it's quite interesting to know that the latest game's performing to this standard or that standard, or if it has or hasn't got DLSS or you know, ray tracing or blah blah blah or blah blah blah. Ultimately, really, uh if the game's good enough, we don't care.
SPEAKER_05:Yeah.
SPEAKER_02:So I I like the kind of deep dive and I like the kind of inside look at how the game's put together per se, or how they've achieved different effects on different platforms. And I I love their content, I'm not here to say I don't, but I do think there's a point where uh does it really matter? Because when I'm looking at YouTube, which has got not that great picture quality anywhere, and I'm looking at the PS5 version on the left hand side, I'm looking at the Xbox Series X on the right hand side, and I'm trying to look at this one, I'm looking at that one, and I'm looking at them both, and I'm trying to read the frame timer, and I'm trying to see the sync screen as well, and it's like I think it's just great, it's just in sometimes it's just interesting, in it, rather than trying to pick out a version you want, it's just interesting and clever how they do it, and I think that's more what it is. It's uh that's that curious that's what I get from it. It's nice to see, but has it ever stopped me from buying a certain game? Not really, and when they do the screen zooms to compare like pixel counts, like I'd be two inches away from my screen to get that same throwing up to get that glass and it it deserves to look horrible. Exactly. I can hold the mold and mold at least a two centimetre, two millimeter away from my eyeball, and it'll look just the same. Yeah, come on. I like I say, I appreciate the content, I like it. I'll always watch it. I especially like um the retro stuff, I find that you know really good. The launch of the PS3 has been really great coverage. The uh 1080p PS3 coverage, like what games do have 1080p and what games don't, was great coverage. Yeah, brilliant. Uh the E3s, the 2000 Stera P3s that they covered, really good. No one else is doing that content. So, you know, actually genuinely appreciate what they're doing. But sometimes I'm like, oh, I'm getting it. So does it matter in Star Wars outlaws if Nyx's head is like upside down in this cutscene? Not really.
SPEAKER_04:Yeah, yeah, I know what you mean, but it probably is that's probably got more and more popular is this this generation and from the last generation has gone more into graphics and ray tracing and versions and what how's that how's the best looking game I would argue this is the gen where we spend more time watching videos on YouTube about the gen that we're meant to be playing than it is actually games that we play. Yeah, I think you're spot on. I think you're 100% spot on, yeah. Yeah, definitely.
SPEAKER_02:It's a bit odd, isn't it?
SPEAKER_04:But uh that's the way it's gone at the moment, but yeah, that's strange.
SPEAKER_02:And I think that leads back into the idea that we we think there's not a lot good going on in gaming when actually, you know, I've got two of the biggest games of the last year sat on the shelf ready to rock and roll. Um, I've got Claire Expedition 33 that I really ought to purchase and have a go at. There's a slew of other games on the Switch I've not even scratched the surface on, and I'm sat here playing getaway on the PS2. I'm the problem, yeah.
SPEAKER_04:Yeah, I think we're the problem as well, because I'm not counting pixels when I'm running through a very blocky house on resistance to you're a weirdo, yeah. I know.
SPEAKER_02:Why aren't you blinking like to see if it matches in time with your 30-second blinks?
SPEAKER_04:Yeah, especially when you're playing it on a 4K gaming monitor and you think, What have we got a PS3 rather for this?
SPEAKER_02:Or mate, even better if you're trying to count frames on that with blinking 120 frames per second, you might as well just sit with your eyes shut.
SPEAKER_04:Yeah, it's great graphic. That's like the turn of the lawnmower man in that visor.
SPEAKER_02:You are Joel. Is his name Joel? He's mad. I'll be retro, let us know.
SPEAKER_04:Yeah, another one. You got some homework this week, fella.
SPEAKER_02:He really has. He's got some t-shirts to print and send. Well, I want them stitching out of his hair as well. He's got enough to do it. Cross stitch. Yeah, it's a small t-shirt. Uh I don't want it to go, I don't want him going completely bored or anything. I don't want that, Harvey. Don't do it, don't do it, don't do it. Uh seeing him was to talk about Harvey. Obviously, the show would be nothing without the the numerous listeners across the world. Uh, over was it 100 countries and 4,000 cities or some dribble?
SPEAKER_04:I think it's yeah, I think it's even over that now. I think.
SPEAKER_02:So I want to say that I do play down the show and make out that it's this this thing and it's it's a joke. It it is actually deadly serious, and well, it's not judicial but our love for you is deadly serious, and our appreciation of you is deadly serious. And in some ways, I do the product down by joking about you know uh making it small. That's hopefully you understand that's all part of the love, and we do appreciate everything that you're doing, and we do appreciate how big the show is and how big Flashy B is gay. And um, we're loving all the eyes on, we're loving all the feedback and the nice things. I uh stumbled onto Discord. I think I was probably trying to get on Grinder, but I ended up in the Discord and um very similar apps, I have to admit. And I thought no, because we're gonna advertise it now. T-shirt, t-shirt. Uh anyway, I stumbled onto the Discord and I I saw some really nice feedback. I think I've seen some from Harvey, I saw some really nice bits from Patsy and Geese. I'm I'm blown away that the hard growth in it, and I think we're just a whole new audience is is discovering us through the medium of uh flashback, which is great. Um, and obviously vice versa, there's a lot of cross-pollination going on RGT. It's uh very active time in the UCP garden.
SPEAKER_04:Yeah, I had someone say to me the other day, I was at work. Um, I was actually walking home from work, and someone came up and said, Oh, I'm loving a new show, um, really taking me back, nostalgic, and I remember that game. I remember playing that game, and we had a bit of a chat about it, and you know, and when I left, they just said, Brilliant work, you know, keep up the show and that we're really loving it. And I thought, yeah, I felt good. I was quite pleased with that. People seem to be enjoying it, and was Anne Geef saying he's really enjoying it, and Harvey and different people. I was like, hmm, brilliant, you know. That's just nice to get the feedback and know that what you're doing is okay, you know, and I'm not making people's ears bleed from waffling on too long, you know. It's it's good. Wow, that's a normal problem I have.
SPEAKER_02:It's it's I find myself with it on a daily basis. Uh the only the only person that hates me more than anyone else that you can think of is me. Thanks for listening.
SPEAKER_03:DL, that went dark quick.
SPEAKER_02:It's true. Uh, so very grateful for all the love that we're seeing and all the kind of feedback and the views and the and uh the listens more predominantly, obviously, because I always say we're an audio show. Uh we probably ought to start doing the videos on YouTube again, but you can definitely listen on there or and watch the awesome uh flashback artwork or the amazing unofficial controller podcast artwork on there while you eat your cereal, pick your nails, your nose, whatever it is you do. I don't know how people listen to podcasts now. I'm normally listening to it 360 inverted. Wow.
SPEAKER_04:I don't even know what that would look like, but that's where I'm at. I can't fathom that out myself. I don't even know what it is.
SPEAKER_03:That sounded like a Stony Ork's trick.
SPEAKER_04:360 inverted.
SPEAKER_02:Yeah, which I'm only inverted for like 0.5 seconds at a time, so it's like a really weird sort of and then I have to flip invert 360 again.
SPEAKER_04:That's a long way, that's a way to listen to the show, so listen fair play.
SPEAKER_02:Stretches the content out. I'm on it, I'm on, I think I'm on Ghosts of Toshiva, so I'm doing well.
SPEAKER_04:Oh nice, yeah. First one. You're done well, yeah. Just gone to the ray. So do yeah, so you took you six years to listen to an hour and forty minutes of content.
SPEAKER_02:And he's the straightest ray you've ever seen this episode.
SPEAKER_00:Yeah, he's gone a bit he's gone a bit wild now, isn't he?
SPEAKER_02:I'm a bit scared of quite the mammoth the mammoth show of the PS5 Star Wars Rises special or whatnot. I think it took me six months to get through the intro music. Wow. Anywho, anywho's down there approaching 300 shows, or on 300 show Eve next episode, I believe RGT if I can counter or so have I got that wrong. We're on what are we on today? 298? Yeah, so the next one is 300 Eve. Uh no doubt we'll uh let that pass by without even a uh recognition of it. Uh maybe we'll do an I don't know what we do for a 300 special. Answer us on a postcard to Ponserbury Towers or questions at onofficialcontrollerpodcast.com or just plead dribble all overs in the Discord. If you interact with if you want to interact with the show, it's free. All you gotta do is join the Discord, message us on Instagram or X, Twitter, call it what you like. I call it the ever-deepening sesshole of human society. Uh I love it though. Um I view it like I'm in the Colosseum watching gladiatorial combat, like eviscerating people like, oh I'm not doing it, I'm just watching it.
SPEAKER_04:Yeah. I mean, I did have a bit of an idea for a 300th episode, so we could something we can uh have a bit of a chat about, but if anyone's got any ideas as well, or listen. Right.
SPEAKER_02:Why don't we do a full script read through of the calendar girls?
SPEAKER_04:Like I say, I've got an idea for the show, so if anyone in Discord's got any ideas, no one else is doing that. Probably for good reason. Um so it could be good doing a full script read through of calendar girls. Answers on a postcard to Ponsabery Towers or questions that Lefish you control the podcast. No, because they will say yes just to do it.
SPEAKER_02:And when I say you well, I mean you executive producer, one would imagine it would then be your responsibility to find said script and present it to me and other co-hosts so we could read it through. Personally, I'm looking forward to Seb Yorkshire accent.
SPEAKER_04:I'm starting to realise why I was made executive producer. Just to rein me in a little bit. No, no, not at all. I think it was more just to I think you'll find RGT, that's an executive producer's job. That I think you'll find it. No, that's that's not something I'd do. I'm a CEO, you're an executive producer. So I never gave myself that title. Merch is your sort of thing, and oh yeah, script writing and the new show, that's your sort of thing. Yeah, you know, anything like that. No, the new art no, that's that's an executive producer thing.
SPEAKER_02:Listen, look at the personal developmental growth that you have seen within yourself over the last 10 months.
SPEAKER_04:Say sorry now. What the little bouts of crying and the grey hair. Yes, uh working a treat, yeah. Wow, I'm a better man.
SPEAKER_01:Everyone loves a silver fox. I'm doing you a favour. Oh no, don't say silver fox. Why?
SPEAKER_05:Oh, is this because of youth club? Jeez, no, no, I'm not going there.
SPEAKER_04:Anyway, um let's get on to our fantastic subs.
SPEAKER_02:I was trying to seamlessly link there, but you left a few fishes dangling and I have to have a little nibble. But what I think what I was saying is if you want to communicate with the show, and God knows why you'd want to at this point, but if you do, Instagram, Twitter, all that sort of stuff, and also more importantly, probably the Discord, where you'll find yourself able to engage with a load of like-minded friends. Now, I don't know why you think it might be culty because it's not like that. You just assigned a watcher when you first join and make sure you saw you only say positive things about the UCP. I would argue that's friendly. Uh, it does sound a bit culty. That doesn't actually happen. Don't panic. Uh, if you weren't scared off originally, get terrified now. That's the Discord dead.
SPEAKER_00:Dead.
SPEAKER_02:Yeah. Uh that's fine. Um, but equally so, as we say, the show will always be free. Its sister show flashback will always be free. But should you ever want to support the show? I'd recommend coming in from as little as three dollars. That's three dollars, George. That's not even real money. No, you're right, it's damn near like two pounds seventy. It's nothing.
SPEAKER_04:And also, I'd just like to say we do have sorry to interrupt, George, we do have tears. Would people like me to add the tears on at the end of the show in the show notes? Is that something you'd like if you could see them there? Would that be any better for anyone? Because I know a few people ask me, well, where do I find the tears? Or maybe just do it. I'll add them on the show notes. I'll add them on the show notes. There we go.
SPEAKER_02:Because I don't even know what they are. They're they're insanely generous. So even if you sign on a three dollars RGT, the Georgie special is guaranteed. You get stu you get a t-shirt straight away. Boom. You can have the current artwork, or you can go in the downloads section of the UCP Discord and you can pick any image from within there. As far as I'm concerned, you can have it on a t-shirt. There isn't even a picture of RGT's head attached to a Greek statue with a cherub like penis, which is quite honestly, I had it as my phone background for a while. That's the other good thing about downloads. If you want to go in there and use any of those images, it's your phone background, wallpaper on your PC. Knopf yourself out. It's all free. I think we scaled some of them to be phone wallpaper size as well. So go dig in.
SPEAKER_04:Yeah, and the download section is. Few is right in there and different bits and pieces and a bit of more and different stuff.
SPEAKER_01:Why do you keep giving us all this cool-free stuff? I don't know. I just want to be loved. You're a giver, aren't you? I'm lonely. Unless you know that you're a giver. I yeah, I see that as something I can get behind, yeah.
SPEAKER_02:Yeah, I really do.
SPEAKER_00:Yeah.
SPEAKER_02:So tell me about this long line of people that I can get behind in the Discord and give all my love to, RGT. Because if you support us on a on a weekly, on a monthly basis, to the tune of$3, you'll get your name read out on the show. Are we gonna RGT? What was the feedback from within the community about maybe playing this section of the show, maybe a little bit straighter out of respect?
SPEAKER_04:Well, I was thinking, shall we do a little bit straighter show this, you know, readout this week, and we'll see what happens. Because it's always got a little bit edgy. The week before when me and you're on, we did get a little bit out of hand, got a little bit fruity.
SPEAKER_02:Well, when I'm disgusted, I know we might have gone a bit too far.
SPEAKER_04:And I mean you and your level is low. Well you are low.
SPEAKER_02:When I held back on, I think it was the ginge intro. Uh, as as humorous as it was, I realized that might have crossed a bit of a line. I did think when you said that, I thought, mm-hmm Das he didn't mind obviously he probably loved it, you know. But uh yeah I think responsible adult was probably a misplaced word. I I misspoke.
SPEAKER_05:Yeah.
SPEAKER_02:I misspoke. I'm not a responsible adult, so it was totally fine. Exactly. I'm glad you've you've confessed. Burst up straight out the gates, chased by the Mysterons, but nobody else. That's Captain Scarlet. Thank you to him. He's I don't know, he's in the background, he's he's wrapped his tendrils around.
SPEAKER_04:I think he's in Disneyland at the moment, isn't he?
SPEAKER_02:You might think that he's he's he's done that to throw you off the scent.
SPEAKER_04:Uh a lot of people like an absolute kid. A lot of people do that to me.
SPEAKER_02:Don't take it personal. No, you're just a victim.
SPEAKER_04:Maybe. Next up, we've got the wonderful Retro Ed. Thank you very much, RetroEd, as always. And I hope you're enjoying flashback because a couple of times I've put it on Instagram and straight away you've you've yes put it up because I'm technologically inept.
SPEAKER_02:I noticed that a lot of people had shared. I woke up Monokia 3310, it had been wringing its tits off. I go into it and it transpired. People had shared videos on it. Um but it must have been Instagram. Um I meant to then share back, but he did that thing of when I pressed on it, it kind of disappeared because it was like you're too slow.
SPEAKER_04:Yeah.
SPEAKER_02:So I apologize, but I I saw that you'd done it, and I am very grateful. Thank you for that.
SPEAKER_04:Yeah, yeah, brilliant. So, yeah, thank you, Retroid.
SPEAKER_02:Up next, um, a man who's needs no introduction. He's the one man George Vancogstroke Army. Um, I'm thinking army now because he's just brutally strong. Very, very strong, very ripped. They're not normal gamers, our listeners, they're all muscle-bound, sort of came in playing it loose, and then we've had to change all their names to ripped or hulk or physique specimen on the Discord. Um yeah, inspirational.
SPEAKER_04:Definitely. So who was it then? Who? Who are you talking about? You haven't said his name yet. Carlos, my man George Franklin. There you go. Um have you said it? I don't think you'd said it.
SPEAKER_02:Yeah, I said it. But obviously, you don't listen to the bits that I'm on, so that's what you're on about. Sorry, I'm just trying to read my name. Doms, can you edit this just so it's me?
SPEAKER_04:Yeah, up till four in the morning preparing you your own. Yeah. Can we just have one where I listen to? I can just listen to myself.
SPEAKER_01:You're very I've noticed you and OG Tom have never been in the room at the same time.
SPEAKER_02:Wonders they can do with it'd be very it would be very OG Tom of him to method this character called RGT. It would be very there's a reveal for Lionel Blair, baby.
SPEAKER_04:Lionel's lawyers, yeah. That's yeah, that's for the old shows. Anyway, next up we have Before the Empire. The wonderful firm returns. Thank you as always, my man. Brilliant, absolutely brilliant. And have you and just let me know, firm returns. Have you played uh Simon of Saucer Origins yet? I still haven't fired it up. I keep saying I'm gonna play it. Let me know if you've played it.
SPEAKER_02:How many extra followers have you had off the back of all the financial props we've given you on? Yeah, remember from Trump to Trump in a week.
SPEAKER_04:Sorry, what about Mr. Nathan?
SPEAKER_03:Was that a rope for it?
SPEAKER_00:Yeah, yeah. That happened as well.
SPEAKER_02:Uh that means I get trestles of New York, thank you, and the finest uh wings on this side, on that side of uh the America.
SPEAKER_04:Absolutely fantastic. And then we've got the awesome Roast Space Monk, the Dreamcast legend.
SPEAKER_02:Road Space Monk's child, his Game Boy Matty. He's he was the show's immortal two-year-old, yeah, who's recently celebrated what looks like his 38th birthday. Yeah. Uh quite what to do with that information, but uh Roast Space Monk obviously got back in touch and said, Oh yes, you know, things are time flies, and it does. Um, but what a wonderful family and happy birthday, mate. Yeah, happy birthday, mate. Uh, if you're still listening, fair play to you. Um, but probably this needs to go on past your bedtime these days. Yeah, might be best. I've said a few.
SPEAKER_01:Did any source this episode or no source?
SPEAKER_04:No, you've been you've been quite a good boy this episode. You're odd innuendo, but you've been pretty good boy.
SPEAKER_02:Hmm. So I don't think I like this incarnation of my character that you have me play. Um the jaded George.
SPEAKER_04:It's not I don't have you play that. You just if you've got contact leaner in the room, jaded is back. It's like Jekyll and Hyde. It's jaded or George.
SPEAKER_00:What does that mean?
SPEAKER_02:Uh that means does that mean I get uh it does, doesn't it? Yep. He comes in, he says hello to everyone, he says, Cow to de Spadabinkster, graduat simile. Stammy Bayern, Badabinster.
SPEAKER_04:Chow beautiful. And I just the amount of football shirts this guy has and retro ones, everything, and he's always putting these different shirts on, they're so cool. Honestly, Bada Bingster, you are one cool dude with all those football shirts.
SPEAKER_02:He needs a Watford Ivico shirt. That's all I'm saying.
SPEAKER_04:Fair play. Uh next up, we have the connoisseur of the JRPG of the Nintendo variety.
SPEAKER_02:Thank you very much. Just the the sound of his name. I hope the microphone picked that picked that up because it made me sound like the guy from Getaway leaning on a wall. It was a very gutteral noise. But come on, play play good. Play good. That was that was clean. Okay, okay. It was the location of my body where it came from.
SPEAKER_04:Okay.
SPEAKER_02:Is it me now?
SPEAKER_04:Yes.
SPEAKER_02:We can cut a little bit loose here because guess what? Oh no.
SPEAKER_03:Wow, wow, wow.
SPEAKER_02:There's one called Rex, and there's one called Tex. Now, this is Rex Winchester, aka white triggers you so much.
SPEAKER_05:Give them first names.
SPEAKER_02:Yeah. This is this is I don't know which way round it was now, but you're gonna be Rex now. This is Rex Winchester, one half of the Winchester boys, the two-man law patrol that sits in the Discord and probably promotes bad behaviour but then punishes it at the same time. Don't mess with the Winchester boys, just stay clear, pull down on the peak of your brow, your cap, and then get out of dodge. Yep. You don't want to mess with them boys, that's all I'm gonna do. So thank you to Digital Mum crew. I don't want to say too much, but he's he's on with summits. Just get your eyes about you if you're a fan of the show. Yeah, just think about yourself and all things.
SPEAKER_04:Yeah. Next up we have the wonderful boardboarder. Um, thank you very much as always, mate, and I hope your uh work has calmed down a bit now after the uh F1 season has finished. So I'm hoping you're uh starting to chill out a little bit now. So uh put your feet up, son, get ready for Christmas, because uh we're gonna have a bit of a bit of fun, I think. So yeah, thank you, boardboarder. Wow, okay. There you go.
SPEAKER_02:Yeah. Up next Tex Winchester. Uh or is it Rex? I can't remember. They're interchangeable, they're interchangeable.
SPEAKER_05:Yeah.
SPEAKER_02:Yeah. Yeah. I won't go. I was I had an example, but this is probably not the best one to use. Anyway, Rex Winchester. No, anyway, is he one of the Winchester boys? Tex you're ripping yourself. I'd make the law.
SPEAKER_04:They're they're two Siamese twins. Oh, okay. Uh the the gunman of the apocalypse.
SPEAKER_02:Yeah, it's it's season one stuff. This is it's absolutely brilliant. Uh, anyway, text Rex Winchester, calling what you like. They rode in on the same horse, so make of it what you think you think you want to make of it. Uh, anyway, it's Boba Loba, one of the other sheriffs. He's the sheriff of the Discord. He's that grizzled chap. It's quiet at the bar.
SPEAKER_04:Well, the thing is, do you know what I noticed with him as well? What he only crops up every now and then in the chats, but you know he's always watching.
SPEAKER_02:Yeah, I want to paint the picture of him in a dark saloon. He's wearing a black hat, a black shirt, a black duster, he's got a hot chick on his arm, he's got a shot of firewater on the thing. Bit of straw. No, he's no, mate, he's got a full-on shrew. And if we have to tick 18 for this episode, because we've said about tobacco, I'm saying it. He's he's smoking a cigarette. Yeah.
SPEAKER_04:Does he do any chewing tobacco as well?
SPEAKER_02:No, that's what Rex Teth does. Uh, yep. Rex just the top lip just hangs off the bottom lip. Yeah. Ready to strike. And you can see he's he's got a concealed carry, but he's also got pistols either side, and at the very top of his boot, he carries an ace of spades. And whenever and whenever and however he feels he wants to play that in a hand, you just have to accept, even if you've got the ace of spades, you immediately have to remove it from your hand. Yep.
SPEAKER_04:That's the way he goes, yeah.
SPEAKER_02:Yeah.
SPEAKER_04:Yeah. So don't drop an F-bomb in the Discord. Boof! Warning.
SPEAKER_02:Would it be a warning? I don't think it would even transmit.
SPEAKER_04:Oh, really?
SPEAKER_02:Yeah, the Winchester boards have stopped the key from going down.
SPEAKER_03:They are quick.
SPEAKER_04:You're then about to press the key, and then there's a knock at the door.
SPEAKER_02:I challenge you to post a swear word in the Discord.
SPEAKER_04:No, I've I've been warned by him before. I daren't. I scared the hell out of me. Try it.
SPEAKER_02:No, you won't even be able to press go.
SPEAKER_04:No. No, there'll be the doorbell go.
SPEAKER_03:What the goddamn hell do you think you're doing, boy?
SPEAKER_02:I know it might break the law, but I do think it needs to pop up with the Winchester boys. You've been warned of that.
SPEAKER_03:That would be amazing, wouldn't it? Somebody swear with him. Ping Winchester boys. A little gift come up. What the goddamn hell do you think you're doing, boy?
SPEAKER_00:What the fuck in hell do you think you're doing? I'm swearing on this discount.
SPEAKER_02:Brilliant. Well, we keep it clean. Thanks, Bob. So you get to be the appropriate adult for my adopted redheaded steps up.
SPEAKER_04:Yes, exactly, which is Ginge. And thank you, Ging. And I have to make a formal apology to Ging. Oh. Yes. I forgot to staff do it to me. I forgot to send his challenge accepted uh gift off. So I have got that done now, and I will be sending that in the next couple of days.
SPEAKER_01:Do you think you are?
SPEAKER_04:Uh one man band? Um so yeah, sorry. I'll get that sent as soon as I can. It's all done now, so I will get it. That's my son. That has been a delay, so I do apologize. I'm sorry. Don't you think he needs his 18th challenger accepted prize? Yeah. 19th. Yes. Sorry, son.
SPEAKER_02:Sorry, son, sorry, sir, ginger.
SPEAKER_04:Yeah. Yeah. So uh yeah, that will be that that is on the way.
SPEAKER_02:Um excellent. Well deserved. Um that's why I don't play. I don't get absolutely crushed by my own son. Up next, Lord of Darkness, a man who is currently stitching me a very small t-shirt together from his hair. With a picture of John Linneman on it, or was that another picture? That'll do. Yeah, it's fine. Saying I'm the real victim here. Jeez.
SPEAKER_00:Thing is, I want to know who is down the food chain for us.
SPEAKER_01:Taking on something reporting on the U6 thing about the switch two frame rates.
SPEAKER_04:We'll have to get our t-shirts done then.
SPEAKER_00:There's a real Robin Hood. Uh so yeah, Harvey Retro.
SPEAKER_04:Who's next? Next up, we have the wonderful Emma Sharp. Thank you as always, Emma. Absolutely brilliant.
SPEAKER_02:Thank you, Emma. Uh that means I get the immortal. Nowhere near Oh dear. Sorry, Greg. Nowhere near Billy.
SPEAKER_04:Then we've got the one and only mumsy. If it weren't for mumsies, none of us would be playing games. So thank you, Mumsy.
SPEAKER_01:I knew you'd have a why not? I don't know. Be good. No, okay, fine. Be good.
SPEAKER_02:Yeah. I thought you had another bad sign. Yeah, I don't know what's going on. Uh RGT fan club, thank you to uh all the thousand of you. Thank you.
SPEAKER_04:Thank you very much. Yeah. Next up we have the second hardest man in the Discord, which is uh Pete Brocklehurst. Thank you very much, Pete.
SPEAKER_02:Very true. Ginge flosses with Pete Brocklehurst. Mm-hmm. Definitely. Yeah. That means I get the what feels like a safe space now. Billy Marmite.
SPEAKER_04:Yeah, you get that little sort of warmth when you get Billy Marmite.
SPEAKER_02:So but I took it pretty straight with everybody else, but I do believe I bind, I signed a legally binding contract with Fatsan Geef for his subscription. I've got an objection, my Lud. Yes, what is it?
SPEAKER_04:Um I think we should do a more gentle, a more downward, a more passionate Fatsangeefief, not just a raw filth. I think we should be more connected. I think we should be more for this for this sange.
SPEAKER_02:I want you to imagine your partner for the last 30 years has taken you on a tantric yoga retreat to the gales of India. There, your guru has taught you.
SPEAKER_00:You triggered me. Really properly, you know, I tried to do it. Just the way you said a guru.
SPEAKER_04:You I would say your guru.
SPEAKER_06:I know that's not right.
SPEAKER_04:You tried to be all soft and professional.
SPEAKER_01:You wanted it this way. I know, but just the way you said it this way.
SPEAKER_02:The footballs anyway, your guru. Your guru has given you your own tantric uh harmonic noise to make while you and your partner of 30 years. This is why it's loving, this is why it's giving. Because the kids have left home. You've decided, she's decided to revive the spark. You've gone to these foothills, beautiful surroundings, wonderful food, beautiful little lodge. Garus made sure everything's nice, flowers on the bed. You need to edit this so it sounds seamless by the way. You can't have all this laughing in it.
SPEAKER_04:I don't know if I can edit this much. I can't work wonders.
SPEAKER_02:Flowers on the bed every night, and you've built up to this wonderful moment. In the seven-day holiday, it's day five, and this is the day that the guru has said to you, you're allowed physical touch, and you're allowed to go back to your lodge and practice everything that you've done. And you've kind of abstained a little bit, you know, you've had a young family which became an older family, and time was never available. So now you find you're easy, this is a depth. You've regretted this, haven't you? God, have I? Okay, but I want this I want this to form within your head because this is I want this to be part of the performance. This is how we do it on the UCP.
SPEAKER_05:I'm now thinking how my life took me to this actual point in my life right now.
SPEAKER_02:When how did this happen? You and me both, cowboy. We signed a contract with the listener for three pounds a month to do this. Absolutely. First of all, I thought it was a win for us. As in, you know, oh, if he wants that, that's fine. But now I realise probably a year in that I feel absolutely solid by this section of the show. But the one thing that gives me great relief is that every now and then it's not me, and I get to pay it back, and this is it. So during this five-day now, and it's the first time any physical touch has been allowed, you've been wearing woolen gloves, you've not been allowed to touch or hold each other at all. You've not even been allowed to wash properly, you've had to wear these mittens. So, this is the first time a hand has touched your body and it's your beloved wife. Now, time has not been kind, 30 years has it's it's been brutal of you both. But that doesn't matter because for this moment you're feeling her hand touch you for the first time. For this moment, she's feeling your hand touch her for the first time, and you both melt. Melt away the years melt away as you melt in to each other as your hearts become one and simultaneously as you become one union and your body becomes one and you and you mumble your your tantric guru's whispered words which are mummy mummy you you you zange while incorporating your guru's words but remember this is uh almost the first rumblings almost it's it's it's almost like the first time all over again and and you uh 30 years in this this scenario we spent more time on this than we did on Rockstar Union scenario I think I've said enough I mean if you're still listening God bless ya God bless you hang on before before we start so have I gotta recite his words or have I just gotta be in the moment and just let it flow you have to recite the words and let it flow and by letting it flow say the words about Sankey in the way that we've been contractually obliged to say them. Okay. I know it's complicated but I think that is he deserves it and everybody else does as well. After all that this payoff better be good.
SPEAKER_04:I've said I I know how you see it. I see it that you're just really stitching me up and making me uncomfortable because there's no more joy in your face than seeing me uncomfortable I think I went past it I lent into it I was ready to do it myself by the time I'd finished I believed in it I bought the story I hoped you would as well it went on a bit I'll be honest well you kept interrupting me not a best seller well I think it is anyway I've just got to remember what the uh guru said right passion love passion love passion how'd it get on I didn't want it uh I'm gonna let it slide I think uh the performance was beautiful I think the essence of what was there was captured I think that that's what I wanted the guru's words were mumsy mumsy not passion love yeah but I was thinking of day five mumsy mumsy was the second day and I've just I've took day five's words and just thought I'm just gonna roll with this you start with mumsy you end up with passion and love okay I hope he's happy um that's a that's a hell of a lot of work that was hell of a lot of work what you've been what are you hoping to play um definitely more illusion of time um really enjoying that it's really got me looking at you think that compares this is something I meant to ask you at the top of the show also you played through some other JRPGs how do you think it compares to the ones that you played on newer systems um you can definitely see the essence and where where that whole genre comes from um and like I say this is very secret of mana linked to the past I think if you like linked to the past I think you'd really enjoy this um it looks decent graphics it plays pretty well um for the you know for how old it is um you know you've got that the I like the scenic setting and I like the um it's it's it's not one of them which is time consuming because you're wandering around trying to find what to do it's very quite well signposted and even if you get even some of the dungeons or castles which are a bit dungeon crawl amazers as you go round yeah you'll have three doors and you'll go through one door a couple of times think hang on you'll go through the other one uh oh there you go it's not that difficult to get your way round which makes it more enjoyable in my eyes some of them older RPGs where they're long because they're very um uh what's the word grindy yeah there isn't that side to this this is a story in your planet proper Enix style I think you I mean you could pick this up for cartridge only for about 20 30 bucks so it's not a oh right yeah I think even boxed complete's about 60 bucks so that's not a that's not a killer on the wallet you know it's it's definitely worth playing but yeah I'm really enjoying that it's got me looking into some more Enix ones some of the other Enix ones are a little bit pricey um but I've got a I've got some more over there I'm gonna have a look at and I actually have got the original Secrets of mana and I've got Final Fantasy III and I've got um I think you're in the right place to love mana.
SPEAKER_02:Yeah yeah I've played Trolls of Manor on the PS4 version which I really enjoyed that um so I'd like to try Secrets of mana on I tried the I had that back in the day you know I was too I was so young it can well that's a bit of an excuse but it was like nothing else I'd ever played it completely bamboozled me.
SPEAKER_04:Yeah yeah yeah that's that sort of the start of the genre really wasn't or what we knew of it anyway. Yeah I guess even though you're you know full on like you know into it nerd I suppose but yeah the snares probably drew our attention to it in a way because the the Pal Mega Drive never really dallied with them too much as his style yeah and maybe smart and of others but we never really got no big chunks of it did we we didn't get far enough we didn't get far enough fantasy there you didn't get mana there you know that's uh Super Nintendo was the place really for those sort of RPGs and JPGs and turn base and stuff so yeah really enjoying that um definitely gonna delve more into Red Dead um it's got me a bit of a bug to play that again I'm I'm humming and harring whether to save that as my sort of Christmas playthrough all I've only got two I've only got two days off at Christmas I ain't got a lot of time this year but um I don't know whether to keep that as a Christmas game or do I buy a new game or do I wait and see if Father Christmas are going to gather round you aren't they on Christmas day while you just sit uninterrupted gaming of God yeah they speak the hell is to pay they know the rules I wouldn't waste your time on verbally telling them off too much just a sharp backhand because it's minimal time maximum effort maximum maximum return uh in many ways well I prefer not because I don't want to tap my hands off a Joy-Con so I just prefer I I find a little scream just tells them where I'm at oh yes little scream and they know that when they hear the little scream shut up so anyway um God see a really dry shot straight video of this of your of your actual family on camcorder like 24 hours nonstop footage of you playing and then sort of just picking round you and you just randomly screaming at them because I got two blows up.
SPEAKER_02:Because someone rustled the newspaper pulled a cracker gods no don't upset him don't upset him he's on red dead shh wrapping a pillow over the cracker to pop it then looking round nervously to see if you move mummy sorry sorry Igd sorry sorry yeah this is this is 48 year old me anyway so yeah a bit more red dead um definitely more Hades 2 that'll always be sort of going on in the background there and yeah nice and I've still I keep wanting to get back onto Halo 4 and I keep thinking maybe that'll be my Christmas game don't know because I want to be playing through those I was listening to the playthrough podcast this week and they've been playing Halo Infinite on their playthrough with the their current cheated on this podcast with another podcast yeah god yeah um I like to listen to something decent um and uh and oh that hurt that dude yeah I meant I don't know why that hurt just like to wash my own sound out of my ears um no you don't mean that that's beautiful but yeah so you know Halo 4 is I must get that game done but yeah so it's plenty to play plenty of options and you know with even with older stuff PS3 and that is plenty to look back on but they will be my main ones I think what about you I think I'm just firmly going to plant myself again just research purposes uh in the past for a little bit so I think not you know I think we're dipping below the millennium we're going above the millennium aren't we in terms of upcoming Flashy B so I'll just continue probably just peddling the uh the PS2 um want to finish the getaway want to then now go back and retrospectively now finish Scarface as well because we've got distracted but deeply involved in the getaway um X Swaz as well I think is a bit of a Kiro but they might say it's welcome I also played Max Payne BTW just a quick go within the first that game has not aged well on the controller although maybe I need to play with a silver controller. No I still think that's probably not aged very well on controller. Defender you need a defender so versatile so good do we take the time at the end of the show for me to investigate what why I'd get a defender over a wigman Brookman or whatever it's called and then these other devices and these other things or is this not the time?
SPEAKER_04:Not the time.
SPEAKER_02:Well I'll tell you what that'd be a good one we could discuss that on flashback yeah because I'm like I I'm I'm I'm just torn I like I don't mind dangling the cord. I've got an extender and I don't mind dangling the cord all the way across the lounge I'm not bothered about this setting it's about how I react to the game does gripe you a little bit because one thing I forget is how the the weight of the cable even though it's not that much just kind of constantly just gently teasingly pulling at the pad and when you then get back to your wireless world it's like oh yeah and the thing is not to say with a defender you've got your two dongles so you've got PS1 and PS2 dongle which sots in the cartridge in the controller port and you just literally connect to it straight away and then you've got the dongle which goes in your PS3.
SPEAKER_04:So it's all three consoles you can play it with and they're very good controllers. They are very good controllers very much is one of those with all that kit uh well they come with that do them dongles anywhere about 40 bucks I think they are if you go in a sale I bought a crystal blue one so it's like the sort of transparent blue and I got it on sale I think for about 30 bucks.
SPEAKER_02:Oh little bit of consumer advice I've decided to plunge myself into you often see on Instagram and other social medias these consoles in one jobs I think one of the brands that you see quite a lot on there is a company called GameLab. It's basically a Game Boy looking device I see they've got two devices now a GBA style uh landscape and then obviously the check way round anyway uh but more traditional Game Boy aesthetic two uh little I think it's the clone of a some other yeah it's like a pale kiddy or something like that or uh something like that and Amberick not a clone of an Ambanic it's a clone of an Ambernik or an RG386 or something weird dribble like that. Anyway get on Google if you're mildly interested. Anyway I decided for a bit of concealer advice and research that I would take the plunge and I've used my own money we're not sponsored by anybody to buy one of these uh I think it was three days ago at point of record so I'll certainly feed back on length of time for it to drive I'll feed back on the games that are on it I'll feed back on the quality of games that are on there and how they hang up and is it exactly as you see on the adverts is it always flashy menus or not? Is it any good or not? Is the emulation as far forward on the Dreamcast solid enough to run Shenyu or not? Can it run Metropolis Street Racer? One of the games listed on there that it comes with by the way if it can I'll wait till tomorrow comes because I'll be long gone and I will not resurface for air for possibly ten years.
SPEAKER_04:They do list a lot of things that they can well actually they list what they have on there it's whether they play them I did buy one years ago that said Dreamcast had Dreamcast section five Dreamcast games loaded them up one frame a minute it was running so it might have them on there but yeah Dreamcast and that sort of level on something and how much did you pay for this you don't mind me asking I will I will reveal everything I paid£40 for the console.
SPEAKER_02:Now it was buy two get one half price now I haven't done that because I didn't see it necessary for the research no but I did buy the carry case look I was in there I couldn't help myself because if for 40 bucks that runs Dreamcast or PS2 or anything like that that would be impressive for it was Cyber Friday sale also the alleged although it was on a Wednesday but there you go uh yeah so it's half price or uh andor buy one get one half price so I there's a lot of discounts going on which obviously makes you nervous I put my own card details into this thing so I'm either going to be bankrupt or furnished for a very low price uh what else did I get? That oh and I got the multiplayer kit as well because I thought now one of the reasons is my son said to me oh is all the gaming stuff still downstairs because I was going to play uh finish my Pokemon Red playthrough but oh now that is now deep stored in the loft sun uh and um oops no so I'm gonna get this try it out get the multiplayer kit if that works get another one right I think it's gonna be how to run Pokemon Red right but then again it's this save that it's probably anyway we've got over that just be happy you got something shiny multiplayer kit so they can talk to each other so I could play through on one and we could I do believe the idea is that you can swap Pokemon andor you can play each other on some of the multiplayer games. That's cool. I got that because I need to understand how that functionality works. Can I play two player NBA jam with you on the Mega Drive version if we're in the same room by the router I think that suggestion I can't see how that works if I'm being honest with you.
SPEAKER_04:So this is why I've and the website's a little bit like Promise You the Moon on a stick and then probably deliver you what looks like a wet piece of I don't know hocked up hooy hock to her most sort of ones that are that interactive and can play and have that sort of emulation on them are normally you know 150 bucks plus to get something that good.
SPEAKER_02:If that does play that for 40 bucks and it plays well and it's quite a nice bit of kit we could have done well there so I'll be very intrigued to see what these can do it's time to put the demon to bed isn't it someone needed from a journalistic point of view to buy one of these pieces of garbage because I did I thought I'm gonna look on YouTube see who has bought these they were all ads really they all felt a bit paid for yeah this specific game lab one I went it one looked like a real genuine youtube clicked on it it was AI yeah I think they're a generic one that Game Lab is just drop shipped that's all it is they've they've obviously just put their name on it as a bit like a soldier boy in it well I agree that's why I've spent my own money so you don't have to now if it transpires that we've stumbled across an absolute gem it's a win-win for you exactly if it transpires I've been robbed and my details have been cloned and my organs are set to be sold and harvested on the dark web that's a lose lose for me. Yeah and on that bombshell RGT do you believe that's all we have time for so um I don't know the outro to my own show RGT so over to you Sunbeam.
SPEAKER_04:Well that's all we've got time for this week uh thanks for joining us on a fish troll podcast it'd like to say if there is anything community corrections that you think we've missed or done or did you like our new subs list um let us know even that did get a little bit raunchy at the end but passionate I'd say passionate um I I listen you asked for it I gave you it that was my idea of passionate yes fair play um yeah so um any questions questions at unofficial controller podcast.com or X or Instagram or I'm on there at retro gamer Thomas you can question me anything you want um come join discord come and say hi and yeah that is about all we've got time for so uh oh you're gonna official yeah I thought you were gonna say that then I was loading you up that's uh what you do with the accounts here we go beautiful see you next time
