Backstage with Carly Pierce
Speaker 1Hello everybody. It is I, skip Clark, along with Marissa, from Middays and we are in a trailer backstage at the Great New York State Fair Suburban Park and I am with the one and only and absolutely beautiful lovely love her, seen her a few times in concert. It's Carly Pierce. Carly, I want to say welcome to the Great New York State Fair. Thank you, I'm so happy to be here. So tell us a little bit about what is going on in the world of Carly Pierce right now.
Speaker 2Oh gosh, Well, so many things. That I can't tell you is what's going on. I'm trying. Let's see, we're winding down the summer, which you know. I think everybody gets to the point where they're excited to maybe tour a little less coming up in the next few months. But I've been hard at work at some things, lots of things.
Speaker 1Stuff. You can't tell us no. So I guess what you're saying indirectly, Marissa, I think what I mean, there could be something new in Bruin.
Speaker 3That's what I'm guessing from this.
Speaker 1Yeah, I have the feeling.
Speaker 3She's not going to confirm or deny.
Speaker 1I have the feeling radio is going to find out pretty quick.
Speaker 2Yeah, there's a lot of new. We'll just say, like new is happening.
Speaker 1Okay, can we just go back? What was the turning point in your career when you you started? What 2017? And then, of course, covid. Yeah, and then let's go from there. What was the turning point for you?
Career Growth During COVID
Speaker 2I mean really COVID. I feel like I was one of the only artists that really my career took off during COVID Probably 29,. My album, which is ironic because I feel like it was written about such like a dark thing in my life and it became truly the best thing that probably ever happened to me and just really solidified like a human relationship with fans. I feel like they realized, oh, she's just like us going through the same things.
Speaker 3That's what I was gonna say. Like when you have, when you, when you go through stuff like that and you're basically releasing your diary, that is where you become the most relatable and all of a sudden it's it's not. This is Carly Pierce on stage. This is Carly Pierce, the girl that's shopping next to me in the grocery store.
Speaker 2Exactly which is me.
Speaker 3If I bumped into you, though, it would be a totally different situation in Target or something. You know what I mean? Oh my God, that's Carly Pierce. You're not supposed to be here.
Speaker 1Exactly so. I mean you kind of put your life out there, and we all know that you know. I mean, do you you kind of put your life out there, and we all know that you know? I mean we read about you, it's in our show prep, it's, you know, reading about the new music that's coming out and your ups and downs, and I mean, do you ever regret?
Speaker 2letting a lot of that out. I mean, I would be lying to you if it hasn't been like a journey of getting to a place where I don't care what other people think. I definitely there's been pros and cons to it. You know, people feel like they know exactly what happened to me. They feel like, oh, all she does is sing about heartbreak or she can't keep a man, or all these different things, and it's like that's just not reality and I think I'm finally at a place where I'm like I don't really care. Whatever keeps making people show up and care. Yes, I'm going to keep writing music that makes me feel things and, like you know, sorry that I went through a situation that didn't serve me and I got out of it.
Speaker 3Follow the Taylor Swift playbook.
Speaker 1Okay, Because that's.
Speaker 3I'm just saying it's out there and it's working for her Totally, so it's going to work for you too.
Speaker 2I feel good about it.
Speaker 1Yeah, and you should, because I believe, from a male standpoint, that everything you've been through has even made you a better person. You have learned how to accept certain things and the ups, the downs, and it's like screw everything else. I am me. If you don't like me, too bad.
Speaker 2Totally. I feel that I feel like you have to. You only get one shot at this life in general and it's like I want to try to live the best that I can.
Speaker 1You've done a lot of collaborations, a lot of duets. Is there somebody that you haven't done one with as of yet that you would like to get going, cody?
Speaker 2Johnson.
Speaker 1Bam.
Speaker 3I'm just, I don't. She's not. Is this an Easter egg? No, it's actually not.
Speaker 2If I was going to give you an Easter egg, it would be Russell Dickerson. Okay, fine.
Speaker 3I was just it, just it felt like a moment. That's, that's all I'm getting at. You know, cody and I I know I'm just saying that not not like you together you the new Stuff you can't tell us about yet.
Speaker 1Oh yeah, I mean there's some things in there that, but All right, we just went back a page, okay.
Speaker 2I would like Cody though if he's looking for his next situation.
Speaker 1I think that would be awesome. He's so good. Kojo is so good.
Speaker 2He's so good, so good.
Speaker 1You know, is there a song of yours that fans love, but you never expected to connect, connect with them so deeply.
Speaker 2I mean truly what he didn't do. I really didn't. I wrote that and I remember kind of being like I don't know if I can put this out into the world and I just sang it at a writer's round during COVID times and it like blew up overnight. Yeah, I just I never thought it's so personal to me. I just never thought anybody would care.
Speaker 1Wow, what is it like to be Carly Pierce A day in your life? I'd say you're back home in Nashville. Just a day in your life, what is it like.
Speaker 2It's pretty boring. I'm pretty average, I have to tell you, Like I don't, I'm going to like a workout class in Nashville where nobody cares if I'm there or not. It's awesome. I go to the grocery store, I hang out with friends in my neighborhood, I go for a run, cook dinner at my house, Like I'm pretty ordinary.
Speaker 1All right. Got to ask what's your favorite thing to cook.
Speaker 2Ooh, I make really good steak.
Speaker 1You make steak.
Speaker 2Yeah, like I do it, you know. Pan seared in the cast iron and then put it in the oven. Let yeah, like I do it, you know pan seared in the cast iron and then put it in the oven.
Speaker 3Marissa, I don't cook. No, I at one point was like cooking up storm and then and then it just it fell off and you don't want anything from me right now. It's like chicken tenders out of the air fryer. Let's go. Hey, that's cooking.
Speaker 1You know. First of all, thank you for your time. I know we got to wrap it up here pretty quick.
Speaker 2But if you weren't a country artist, if you weren't the person who you are today, what do you think you would be doing? I could ask that a lot and truly. From the time I was like five, this is what I wanted to do. However, there was like one day where I kind of thought maybe I would be a vet, but then I figured out that vets have to deal with sick animals and I couldn't do that. But I really love, like health and nutrition, so something maybe in like I don't know something in that.
Speaker 1Yeah, something like that. Do you have pets?
Speaker 2I do Johnny and June, my two dogs.
Speaker 1That's right, I should have known, yeah yeah, johnny, how old are they and what are they?
Speaker 2They're five, they're twins and they're Shih Tzus. Be careful, more Shih Tzu.
Speaker 1But they're a lot of fun. Now can I ask do you bring them on the tour bus?
The Ranch Bottle Incident
Speaker 2You know, here's the deal with them. I don't know what happened, but when I told you I've maintained my ordinary life, they've gotten cocky. So in the beginning they used to be awesome and now they bite people and they're really aggressive and they kind of suck. So they're very good to me, but they are divas and a half. They tried to bite Tim McGraw.
Speaker 1Oh, that's not good.
Speaker 2They've bitten some of my band members so they stay at home.
Speaker 1Yeah, and when you don't want them around, you bring the dogs out.
Speaker 2Exactly, exactly, but they're perfect, but they're bad.
Speaker 3Marissa, you got anything else you'd like to add? Well, I wanted to ask how is the hand injury? Oh, a ranch huh Bottle of ranch.
Speaker 2I know, you know what's funny. So I got the two stitches. Obviously, like on the internet, people were saying I was rushed to the hospital. I'm like, okay, no, I wasn't, it's the internet, Come on.
Speaker 1you're on your deathbed.
Speaker 2But I will say it still hurts.
Speaker 3Like when I go to open a bottle, I'm like ow, Well, you're probably near a tendon or something.
Speaker 2It definitely was, but it's healing up. It's crazy.
Speaker 3That was only like two weeks ago, but see like so relatable, because I am also incredibly accident prone, so it was not good, but look she good, she fine.
Speaker 1It's awesome. You look great, Han looks great. I think we're in for a great show tonight. I know we are right. I mean, here you are at the great New York State Fair and going to a baby calf be born. We just saw them.
Speaker 2Yeah, we were just there. I didn't see it be born, but I saw the stuff that comes out after yeah, I know, we saw that too.
Speaker 3It was pretty traumatizing.
Speaker 1We don't talk about that.
Speaker 2Well, here I am. That's what I saw today. That's memorable. Have you ever?
Speaker 1seen something like that before.
Speaker 2You know I can't say that I have, so you're this is like Vegas.
Speaker 3What happens?
Speaker 2at the fair stays at the fair.
Speaker 1I just couldn't believe. You'll never forget.
Speaker 2Yeah, I couldn't believe that big of a baby came out of that cow. I was like, wow, that's huge.
Speaker 1It's like what's your baby weigh? It's 110 pounds.
Speaker 2It's like holy crap.
Teasing New Music Coming Soon
Speaker 1It was big. It was big. All right, it's Carly Pierce. Thank you again for to the stage and we're just so excited about that. And you've had four number one hits. I know we're going to hear all those tonight and maybe some new ones.
Speaker 2Not any new ones, but I'm just saving it.
Speaker 1You're going to get it, you are really keeping all this a secret. Marissa, you notice how I'm trying.
Speaker 3I know you're trying, it's fine.
Speaker 2I know I can't make your dreams come true yet.
Speaker 1Not yet. Just gave you a hint, that's.
Speaker 2Easter egg.
Speaker 3I see, I'm telling you, it is it is All right, it's Carly Pierce.
Speaker 1Thank you so much for being here. On behalf of the Wolf, thank you for taking the time and your team to give us permission to come up here and talk to you. You're the best. It's artists like you that make us so great. If we didn't have your music, I don't know where we would be to be honest with you.
Speaker 2Oh, that's really nice, thank you it's radio, it's what we do yeah, I'm gonna cry oh that's so nice.
Speaker 3He's an emotional guy, so watch out. Oh, that's so nice.
Speaker 2I very much remember my radio tour and it's definitely not lost on me. That's why I get to do this awesome yeah, thank you.
