As you get better and better at production, and your marketing/promo skills get better, so too will your fanbase increase.

However, that may not cut it to become the full-time producer you aspire to be.

This is why I believe in the philosophy of diversifying how you make money as a producer when you're young, so that you can figure how exactly what you're best at, and enjoy the most. Once this is figured out, you're set and ready to niche down to that one thing.

Becoming a tour artist is extremely difficult. But, diversifying how you make money, and supplementing your income with the things you do in the studio, can help IMMENSELY with pulling yourself toward that goal. This is one of the main philosophies of this podcast and why I started it!

This episode is all about why diversifying the way you make money is so important!

Hey, guys. Welcome to electronic dance money. You're number one business resource for making money as electronic musicians and producers. Hey, guys, welcome back to another episode of electronic dance money. My name is Christian Aceto. I am your host and today we've got another solo episode. So today we are going to be talking about why it's important for you to be diversifying what you're doing as an electronic music producer and mostly about how you're making your money. Let's talk a little bit about how the industry works a little bit, especially for electronic music producers, or maybe even just shine a little bit of realism onto the scene. Being a touring artist is extremely difficult. Ask any artists that tours. They'll tell you it quickly turns into a job. It's super fund. It's a fun job toe have. But it's super, super, super exhausting and can be very stressful sometimes, especially if you're on the road for a long period of time. And giving to that point where you could be a touring artist is even more difficult. It takes years and years and years of practice, a lot of dedicated hard work and what goes into that are a lot of things. There's a lot of variables that go into being a touring artist. Now. It's not to say that it can't happen. It will happen. Um, it'll happen to many people. It will happen to might be happening when one of you who are listening to this podcast now or eventually in the future it will happen to people. But the truth being, the majority of people probably listen to this. Aren't gonna be touring artist at the end of the day. That's just how the numbers work. Don't kill the messenger here. That's just and I don't I'm not saying you shouldn't try to get to that goal. I think you should. I think you should try as hard as you can, but I think there are things that you can put in place that can make that task at hand so much easier and you'll learn a lot of things along the way. They get you to that point faster, and this is why I think you should diversify, how you're making money as on electronic music producer cause More unlikely. If you're listening to this podcast, you want to be a full time music producer in electronica music. So the quickest way to get to that point is obviously to be making money off of the things you're doing in this studio. You can use what you learn there and even the money you make off of doing that to fund your dream of wanting to be touring artists. But the question is, how do I diversify what I'm doing? And you know, this is kind of the overall philosophy, and the message of this podcast is way used to do that. You know the first episode we talked about selling beats If you're ah, hip hop producer, if you're a base producer, you can produce hip hop music. That's one way you can make money and do that on the side. And that could be a way of money coming in so you can focus in more on your career of being a full time touring artist. Once you get the hang of let's say, selling beats like that first episode and you've got the process down and you can bust tracks out really quickly. People like your stuff. You can market them well. You can email past clients to send them stuff to buy. If you have all these things in place, it becomes really easy to get that side of the job done so you can focus more on. Okay, you know what? This month I need to network with these people so I can potentially get signed on to this agency. However, getting to that point niche ing down to figuring out you know what you really like and what you make a lot of money doing, it's difficult to get there. So it's important to divers file decent. Let me put into this example one thing I always tell, and you know, I've talked about this in the podcast before, But one thing I always tell new producers or new clients that I have that are young producers. One thing I consistently tell them is you should be working on as many genres as you possibly can for about the first year, so that you are producing. The reason for this is you never know if you're gonna find a genre that you're really good at making and that you actually grow to love. You don't know that until you actually work on that genre. Same with the you won't know if people really like that john genre you make if you don't try it and put it out and see how the market reacts to it. So in order for you to find your sound or find what genre you like to produce, it's important that you produce as many as you can. In the benefit to doing this as well is the fact that you can find things in other genres that you can apply to, one that you really like and create something really unique, really interesting, something that catches people's eyes. This is a way that you confined your sound. Find something unique about what you create and put your stamp on it so people recognize it as you. Now the same goes to making money as an electronic music producer and niche ing down into something that you're good at creating. And this is your Ah, lot of this podcast is just a plethora of different things that you can do to make money as an electronic music producer so again that we can go full time once we go full time and we're making money off of what we're doing. This studio. We can spend more time focusing on. Okay, I'm freed up for my day job or night job. I don't need to go to that. My job is in the studio. I just need to work on my craft. I can focus on my artistry while creating whatever it is. Maybe you're selling beats. I make five hip hop tracks a week that take me four hours each. That's 20 hours. That's half of your work week that's happened. You know, if you if you work 40 hours a week, 20 hours is that of that is spent creating hip hop tracks that you're gonna sell, you're gonna market. You can put those on every week, and then the other 20 hours is focused on your artists. Who are you as an artist? How are you networking? You know, the tracks that you're making for your artist's name, marketing, promotion, all that stuff. So you can see quickly that when you die, when you when you figure out exactly how you can make your money as an electronic music producer, you can spend more time and focus more of your energy on your actual artistry so that you can become a touring artist. So let's talk about diversifying that, because before, just like the genre's before you jump into, I'm just going to sell sound packs of just making sound packs. It's all immunity or sample packs or selling beats. Or like Richie, you're gonna stream on twitch before you jump that gun. You need to be working on a bunch of different things. If you're a fairly young producer, you're probably not really good at all of these things or any one of these things. So it's important to dip your toes into a few then and find what you really like. Now with what Richie is doing from Six Street, he's a unique position. He's able to monetize something that he loves doing streaming on twitch. But that's also content he's creating for fans. If you are able to not only monetize something you love doing as a producer, he's just given feedback, and you can provide content to fans. I mean, that's your double whammy right there. That's massive. There's there's plenty of things you can do like this where you hit both those you hit the I'm working to be a touring musician, but I'm also monetizing this so I could go full time. You can hit that even better. That should be a goal of yours. So this is why you should be diversifying. How you're making money as a producer. So let's talk about if you have a pretty good following right now. If you've gotten I don't know, let's say 5000 likes on Facebook and Instagram. You've gotta you've got small following. You're in a very, very good position right now. If you're not already monetizing what you're doing, there are so many things you can be monetizing because people like what you're doing. What you're creating is good, and if what you're creating is good, you condemn vied, the things that you used to create. You can divide those things up and sell those two producers who want to be good. They want to have good sounds. Maybe their sound design sound design game isn't on point. So let's talk a little bit about that. Let's talk about how once you're good at specific things, if you're good at creating sounds, if you're if you're good at creating samples, if you're good X streaming, you could teach someone how to do something. You're a very good teacher. Let's talk about how you can diversify these things so that you can start making money. Now figure out what the market wants, what people like from you and then inched down on that thing. Now, if you're to this point where you have a decent following, you're making really good tracks of people like in your signing stuff. More likely at this point, you probably got a handle on sound design. You probably design a lot of the sounds that you have. If you have sound design sessions in place, this is an easy, easy, easy thing to Dio. If you're making 10 sounds a week within a month, you should have a sound pack you can sell. You can take that sound pack, and if you haven't create a website, definitely create one. Now great a store and put that sound pack on your store. At that point, it's really all about how you're gonna market it. And that will be another episode where we'll go over some marketing tactics on how you can markets. Um, these specific things like sound pack sample packs, templates, all these sorts of things now you put those sound packs up on your website, sell them for however much you want and you market those. You can do the same for sample packs. Put your if you have samples that you original samples you've created created sample, pack or include those samples in a sound pack and increase the price of that. So it's both the sound pack and a sample pack, maybe also include some midi stuff in there. Put these on your store. Maybe you have a template by this. I'm sure you have a template. By this time that you've just perfected, you're really good at. Um, it's very creative. The flow is really nice. If you could duplicate this template and other Dawes that you have even better because you can sell the template as well as the video tutorial showing you how to use the template properly. How you use it in a project. This is something you could sell for, like 100 bucks. Um, maybe you want to do some coaching you want. Teach some people some of the things you learn. This is something you can also market. You can put on your store that people can purchase and then schedule some time with you. So and if you're at this point where you have somewhat of fault you're getting into the semi pro space, you're no longer an amateur bedroom producer. You've got 5000 followers, 10,000 dedicated followers. This is something you can put out that people will react to, a guarantee you have. Producers are interested in what you're doing, and you're already talking to them more likely because they reached out to you to ask some questions. So you're in a very unique position at this point. This is where you can start to diversify, how you're making money. Maybe you're not full time. Maybe you're playing some local shows or some regional shows. You're not touring. You don't have an agency, you don't have a manager. You're not being signed to major labels. But you have this following in place and you're still working your day job. This is where you you can start to transition and start playing in the market a little bit to figure out what it is that people want from you, what you're good at and how you can actually start to make money on these things. So what you want to do is you want to take these basic their day to day tasks weekly task that you're doing in your projects. Figure out how you can package them, whether it's a sound pack, whether it's a sample pack, whether their business coaching lessons. Maybe you design all of your cover art so you can sell. Cover are two other producers. These are ways that you can put yourself out on the market. Diversify what? How you're making your money. And once you start making sales just like the first episode with Danny TROIA, where we talked about selling beats, how you wanna make a bunch of different type beats until one cells and then go. What is that? Let me try focusing more on that more cell. That's market saying double down. Same thing goes with this. If you're creating really unique sounds that people can't get on spice that people love and your marketing this sound pack and it's going off the shelf. But your sample packs not doing shit or you're coaching is not really doing anything or maybe people or are wanting to coach because of sound design. Then you could do sound design lessons. This is a part of the market where it's telling you you're good at this. Why don't you focus on this? You can make good money off of sound design or sound design lessons so that you can start funding this career that you want this dream of yours. You can start making a an income off of sound design. Maybe you're only spending five hours a week dish on sound design to create the sound packs that are making you money five hours a week. You could make enough money to where, supplementing most of your income where you can maybe cut your hours at your job. That means you have more time to focus on this overall path of I want to be touring artist. Okay, well, guess what. Now I have six hours, maybe four hours of my day that's freed up where I can go start networking more, finding agencies where I can start talking to the people that work there so I can get in, um, or start going to more shows to get introduced to more promoters, to play more shows, to get more fans or start creating more content to put out for my fans quickly, you realize how by divert, diversifying how you're making money as an electronic music producer. Then the market tells you what you shouldn't be doing. Niche ing down and focusing on that, making a good chunk of money from that, supplementing your income. You can focus on being that touring artist of getting those fans you free up. You free up the time restraints that you have from having a day job and not being able to focus on your artistry and what you want to do as a producer. So this is why I think it's it's super important for producers to be to be very open to how they're willing to make money. I see a lot of producers who are just going. I just want to make music, and I understand that I get that most everyone does just want make good music. You want to put it out there for people to love. It's difficult to do that when you're not able to get out of the restraints of having a day job, and the quickest way to get out of that is to figure out how you can How can you supplement that income with what you're doing in music? And there's Elektronik. Music producers are in such a unique position where you're constantly creating things on a day to day basis or a weekly basis that could be monetized. There's there's not a lot of other genres or, um, jobs in the music industry where that that can apply as an electronic music producer, I mean, there's so many different avenues you can take to monetize things. I mean, you're you're in a unique position. You conduce one of two things you can focus on just making music and trying to network. And I think that working is great, and I think that's a good If you want to do that, more power to you. Do it, Do it. I think you should. I think you should try, because you never know if you're gonna be that person where you just do that and you everything falls in place for you and you can become a touring artists. The fact of the matter is, most of you aren't going to be in that position. That's just the truth, and it sucks to hear, but you are in the position where you can take the time to create things. Look at what you're doing. See if there's a market for it. See, people are interested in templates. They're interested in coaching their interest in sound packs, sample packs. They are. There are people out there looking for that sort of thing. It's just a matter of how you provide value to those people, how you get them hooked, how you bring that. Pull them in. And once you can do that, you can start making money and be your own boss. Work in the studio, just working the studio full time so you can free up this this time restraint you have so you can focus on being an artist. So it's a short episode this week. That's why I want to talk about this is something I've been thinking about a lot. Um, I think it's super important for artists to diversify, how they're making money, and I want you to look at everything that we talked about in this podcast is being, you know, pretty objective. You don't have to do everything that's said in this. A lot of it is just you being able to pick and choose what you like, what you want to apply, see if it works and run with it. I wanted to take the time to talk about the reason for the reason why. I believe it's important for producers to try to make money from a number of different things that they're doing in this studio, cause you never know if you're going to find that one thing where you can run with it, make good money on it and focus your time in on being a producer for your own artist's name.
