Because in"},{"startTime":18.24,"endTime":21.75,"body":"the last week or so, myself,"},{"startTime":18.24,"endTime":21.75,"body":"Matt McLean and Sarah Davis have"},{"startTime":21.75,"endTime":26.79,"body":"had an article out critiquing"},{"startTime":21.75,"endTime":26.79,"body":"whether private organisations"},{"startTime":26.82,"endTime":29.97,"body":"should be leading on curriculum"},{"startTime":26.82,"endTime":29.97,"body":"development. So that's, that's"},{"startTime":29.97,"endTime":32.91,"body":"one angle. But in this podcast,"},{"startTime":29.97,"endTime":32.91,"body":"I wanted to take a different"},{"startTime":32.91,"endTime":37.47,"body":"angle looking at this research,"},{"startTime":32.91,"endTime":37.47,"body":"which is one of the things that"},{"startTime":37.47,"endTime":41.01,"body":"had been niggling away at the"},{"startTime":37.47,"endTime":41.01,"body":"background for me around this"},{"startTime":41.01,"endTime":43.59,"body":"research, since it was kind of"},{"startTime":41.01,"endTime":43.59,"body":"put out for call for people to"},{"startTime":43.59,"endTime":48.48,"body":"participate last year. And and"},{"startTime":43.59,"endTime":48.48,"body":"what that is, it's about the"},{"startTime":48.48,"endTime":52.59,"body":"quality of the research. So my"},{"startTime":48.48,"endTime":52.59,"body":"question that I'm hoping to"},{"startTime":52.62,"endTime":56.82,"body":"answer and explore in this"},{"startTime":52.62,"endTime":56.82,"body":"podcast is, is this an example"},{"startTime":56.85,"endTime":60.63,"body":"of a good research project. So this podcast is"},{"startTime":125.19,"endTime":128.4,"body":"done in the context of that, but"},{"startTime":125.19,"endTime":128.4,"body":"equally about a piece of"},{"startTime":128.4,"endTime":132.24,"body":"research that is professionally"},{"startTime":128.4,"endTime":132.24,"body":"causing me some disquiet. So I"},{"startTime":132.24,"endTime":135.39,"body":"wanted to share that in an open"},{"startTime":132.24,"endTime":135.39,"body":"forum. And I'm welcome for"},{"startTime":135.39,"endTime":138.42,"body":"people to come back at me, and"},{"startTime":135.39,"endTime":138.42,"body":"critique what I say Why else"},{"startTime":138.42,"endTime":141.63,"body":"would I put a podcast out or any"},{"startTime":138.42,"endTime":141.63,"body":"of my writing, or any of my"},{"startTime":141.63,"endTime":146.01,"body":"thinking? So that's what I'm"},{"startTime":141.63,"endTime":146.01,"body":"coming at it from this, I'm sure"},{"startTime":146.01,"endTime":148.35,"body":"there's a couple of people"},{"startTime":146.01,"endTime":148.35,"body":"listening, who might well have"},{"startTime":148.35,"endTime":151.83,"body":"been students of mine, so they"},{"startTime":148.35,"endTime":151.83,"body":"know exactly how I would"},{"startTime":151.83,"endTime":155.97,"body":"approach critiquing their work."},{"startTime":151.83,"endTime":155.97,"body":"So I'm gonna, I'm gonna do that"},{"startTime":155.97,"endTime":158.67,"body":"in a similar way. And I'm going to"},{"startTime":166.05,"endTime":169.26,"body":"use the Pearson's work as an"},{"startTime":169.26,"endTime":173.82,"body":"example. So because that's where"},{"startTime":169.26,"endTime":173.82,"body":"I'm sitting at the moment is I'm"},{"startTime":173.82,"endTime":176.61,"body":"looking at this work. And I"},{"startTime":173.82,"endTime":176.61,"body":"suppose I'm using that this in"},{"startTime":176.61,"endTime":179.88,"body":"two ways, one to critique"},{"startTime":176.61,"endTime":179.88,"body":"research, and people can think"},{"startTime":179.88,"endTime":182.85,"body":"about what makes good research,"},{"startTime":179.88,"endTime":182.85,"body":"and one from a perspective that"},{"startTime":182.85,"endTime":185.58,"body":"some of the things that have"},{"startTime":182.85,"endTime":185.58,"body":"caused me some disquiet about"},{"startTime":185.58,"endTime":188.58,"body":"it. So there's a few things that"},{"startTime":185.58,"endTime":188.58,"body":"I want to explore in this week's"},{"startTime":188.58,"endTime":192.93,"body":"podcast, I want to explore when"},{"startTime":188.58,"endTime":192.93,"body":"we set out a research project,"},{"startTime":192.93,"endTime":196.11,"body":"what's the aim? Or the research"},{"startTime":192.93,"endTime":196.11,"body":"question that we're trying to"},{"startTime":196.14,"endTime":203.19,"body":"answer or resolve? Or find a way"},{"startTime":196.14,"endTime":203.19,"body":"towards? What's the methodology"},{"startTime":203.19,"endTime":205.95,"body":"and the methods that we're using"},{"startTime":203.19,"endTime":205.95,"body":"to how we're going to try and"},{"startTime":205.95,"endTime":208.86,"body":"answer this question or meet"},{"startTime":205.95,"endTime":208.86,"body":"this aim? Do we come to this with"},{"startTime":217.14,"endTime":220.68,"body":"our own perspectives, our own"},{"startTime":220.68,"endTime":223.92,"body":"ideas? And is that going to"},{"startTime":220.68,"endTime":223.92,"body":"affect the quality of the work"},{"startTime":224.04,"endTime":229.02,"body":"that we're doing? Who do we collect data"},{"startTime":231.72,"endTime":235.74,"body":"from some of the limitations of"},{"startTime":235.77,"endTime":239.16,"body":"the approaches that we can take"},{"startTime":235.77,"endTime":239.16,"body":"and which one I see that has"},{"startTime":239.16,"endTime":242.55,"body":"been taken within this study."},{"startTime":239.16,"endTime":242.55,"body":"And then finally, I'm going to"},{"startTime":242.55,"endTime":245.82,"body":"talk about whether the claims"},{"startTime":242.55,"endTime":245.82,"body":"that are on the Pearson's"},{"startTime":245.82,"endTime":248.64,"body":"website, so I'm just looking at"},{"startTime":245.82,"endTime":248.64,"body":"public information, I'm not"},{"startTime":248.64,"endTime":250.95,"body":"looking at anything private, I"},{"startTime":248.64,"endTime":250.95,"body":"actually don't have access to"},{"startTime":250.95,"endTime":256.11,"body":"anything private. And I'm"},{"startTime":250.95,"endTime":256.11,"body":"looking at these claims. And I'm"},{"startTime":256.11,"endTime":259.92,"body":"going to critique those and say,"},{"startTime":256.11,"endTime":259.92,"body":"whether I think the claims that"},{"startTime":259.92,"endTime":263.25,"body":"are being put forward are"},{"startTime":259.92,"endTime":263.25,"body":"justified by the evidence that's"},{"startTime":263.25,"endTime":267.24,"body":"provided. Okay, so that's"},{"startTime":263.25,"endTime":267.24,"body":"something else that I would look"},{"startTime":267.24,"endTime":269.49,"body":"at when I'm reviewing research"},{"startTime":267.24,"endTime":269.49,"body":"when I'm discussing with my"},{"startTime":269.49,"endTime":273.45,"body":"students, you're making this"},{"startTime":269.49,"endTime":273.45,"body":"claim, but what's the evidence?"},{"startTime":273.48,"endTime":275.97,"body":"Is the evidence strong enough"},{"startTime":273.48,"endTime":275.97,"body":"for you to make such a strong"},{"startTime":275.97,"endTime":279.09,"body":"claim or a weak label a"},{"startTime":275.97,"endTime":279.09,"body":"generalisation and so forth?"},{"startTime":280.2,"endTime":282.48,"body":"Okay, so while I'm talking, I'm"},{"startTime":280.2,"endTime":282.48,"body":"gonna click through a couple of"},{"startTime":282.48,"endTime":285.51,"body":"screens, if you hear me pausing"},{"startTime":282.48,"endTime":285.51,"body":"or clicking, it's because I want"},{"startTime":285.51,"endTime":288.06,"body":"to make sure that I'm"},{"startTime":285.51,"endTime":288.06,"body":"referencing the work that I'm"},{"startTime":288.06,"endTime":292.47,"body":"critiquing properly. Okay,"},{"startTime":297.78,"endTime":305.82,"body":"So one of the aims of the study"},{"startTime":305.91,"endTime":312.72,"body":"seems to be an attempt by"},{"startTime":305.91,"endTime":312.72,"body":"Pearson's or a drive by"},{"startTime":312.72,"endTime":316.59,"body":"Pearson's to raise the status of"},{"startTime":312.72,"endTime":316.59,"body":"design education in schools and"},{"startTime":316.59,"endTime":321.15,"body":"reverse the downward trend in"},{"startTime":316.59,"endTime":321.15,"body":"student uptake. Okay, so that's"},{"startTime":321.15,"endTime":324.42,"body":"the claim. So that's about the"},{"startTime":321.15,"endTime":324.42,"body":"claim as the aim of the study"},{"startTime":324.42,"endTime":329.94,"body":"that's been articulated on the"},{"startTime":324.42,"endTime":329.94,"body":"website, okay. And they, they're"},{"startTime":329.94,"endTime":335.61,"body":"going to try and resolve that"},{"startTime":329.94,"endTime":335.61,"body":"they claim by with a new future"},{"startTime":335.61,"endTime":338.64,"body":"focus design and technology"},{"startTime":335.61,"endTime":338.64,"body":"curriculum. Okay, so they're"},{"startTime":338.64,"endTime":342.03,"body":"saying, We've got this problem,"},{"startTime":338.64,"endTime":342.03,"body":"we've got this decline, and"},{"startTime":342.03,"endTime":345.75,"body":"we're going to do that. Okay."},{"startTime":342.03,"endTime":345.75,"body":"Our research shows that we're"},{"startTime":345.75,"endTime":349.74,"body":"going to do that, that we can do"},{"startTime":345.75,"endTime":349.74,"body":"that through a new curriculum."},{"startTime":350.58,"endTime":353.22,"body":"Okay, that's future focused."},{"startTime":350.58,"endTime":353.22,"body":"Alright, so that's, that's kind"},{"startTime":353.22,"endTime":355.29,"body":"of the two parts, I'm going to"},{"startTime":353.22,"endTime":355.29,"body":"kind of talk about the bit that"},{"startTime":355.32,"endTime":359.88,"body":"happens in the middle between"},{"startTime":355.32,"endTime":359.88,"body":"the aim reversing the decline,"},{"startTime":360.21,"endTime":364.29,"body":"and increasing the status? And"},{"startTime":360.21,"endTime":364.29,"body":"what they're saying is the"},{"startTime":364.29,"endTime":367.26,"body":"answer, and we'll look at the"},{"startTime":364.29,"endTime":367.26,"body":"research that kind of sits in"},{"startTime":367.26,"endTime":370.59,"body":"the middle. Now, if, if this if"},{"startTime":367.26,"endTime":370.59,"body":"a student had come to me and"},{"startTime":370.59,"endTime":374.01,"body":"said, Allison, I'm going to do"},{"startTime":370.59,"endTime":374.01,"body":"some research? Because I want to"},{"startTime":374.01,"endTime":378.03,"body":"find out how can we? How can we"},{"startTime":374.01,"endTime":378.03,"body":"raise the status of design"},{"startTime":378.03,"endTime":380.88,"body":"education in schools, and"},{"startTime":378.03,"endTime":380.88,"body":"reverse the downward trend in"},{"startTime":380.88,"endTime":386.25,"body":"student uptake? Okay. I'd be"},{"startTime":380.88,"endTime":386.25,"body":"asking questions like, well, you"},{"startTime":386.25,"endTime":389.91,"body":"need to define what you mean by"},{"startTime":386.25,"endTime":389.91,"body":"design education. So I find that"},{"startTime":389.91,"endTime":392.37,"body":"quite interesting that on the"},{"startTime":389.91,"endTime":392.37,"body":"website, it talks about design,"},{"startTime":392.37,"endTime":396.06,"body":"education, not design and"},{"startTime":392.37,"endTime":396.06,"body":"technology education, I find,"},{"startTime":396.39,"endTime":400.38,"body":"you know, in research studies,"},{"startTime":396.39,"endTime":400.38,"body":"we need to be clear about the"},{"startTime":400.38,"endTime":405.57,"body":"focus, because design education"},{"startTime":400.38,"endTime":405.57,"body":"potentially could include art"},{"startTime":405.57,"endTime":410.04,"body":"and design, as well. And given"},{"startTime":405.57,"endTime":410.04,"body":"the NSA ad, that's the subject"},{"startTime":410.04,"endTime":412.59,"body":"association for art design a"},{"startTime":410.04,"endTime":412.59,"body":"part of this and that, that kind"},{"startTime":412.59,"endTime":417.21,"body":"of hints at this as well. And"},{"startTime":412.59,"endTime":417.21,"body":"given that the designer"},{"startTime":417.21,"endTime":419.82,"body":"Technology Association aren't"},{"startTime":417.21,"endTime":419.82,"body":"listed in that kind of"},{"startTime":419.82,"endTime":423.15,"body":"introductory paragraph that"},{"startTime":419.82,"endTime":423.15,"body":"suggests that it's not actually"},{"startTime":423.15,"endTime":425.76,"body":"about design and technology so"},{"startTime":423.15,"endTime":425.76,"body":"that I would be critiquing one"},{"startTime":425.76,"endTime":429.84,"body":"of my students say, there's some"},{"startTime":425.76,"endTime":429.84,"body":"confusion here, in terms of this"},{"startTime":429.84,"endTime":434.04,"body":"being setting this out as a, as"},{"startTime":429.84,"endTime":434.04,"body":"a research study. Okay, so"},{"startTime":434.04,"endTime":435.72,"body":"somebody might come back to me"},{"startTime":434.04,"endTime":435.72,"body":"say, Oh, this isn't a research"},{"startTime":435.72,"endTime":439.56,"body":"study, but but they talk about"},{"startTime":435.72,"endTime":439.56,"body":"the research, okay, that they've"},{"startTime":439.56,"endTime":444.78,"body":"done, to kind of support some of"},{"startTime":439.56,"endTime":444.78,"body":"these things that they're"},{"startTime":444.78,"endTime":447.99,"body":"wanting to address, a person's"},{"startTime":444.78,"endTime":447.99,"body":"wanting to address, and reverse"},{"startTime":447.99,"endTime":451.44,"body":"the downward trend in student"},{"startTime":447.99,"endTime":451.44,"body":"uptake. And so I'll be asking"},{"startTime":451.53,"endTime":454.68,"body":"for some specifics about what we"},{"startTime":451.53,"endTime":454.68,"body":"mean by this downward trend,"},{"startTime":454.68,"endTime":457.89,"body":"downward trending, in what given"},{"startTime":454.68,"endTime":457.89,"body":"that we've got art and design"},{"startTime":457.89,"endTime":460.95,"body":"organisations in this, and that"},{"startTime":457.89,"endTime":460.95,"body":"design and technologies are a"},{"startTime":460.95,"endTime":463.71,"body":"downward trend, where's the"},{"startTime":460.95,"endTime":463.71,"body":"evidence? Now, we know if you're"},{"startTime":463.71,"endTime":465.87,"body":"listening as a design and"},{"startTime":463.71,"endTime":465.87,"body":"technology person in England, we"},{"startTime":465.87,"endTime":468.66,"body":"know that there has been a"},{"startTime":465.87,"endTime":468.66,"body":"significant decline in the"},{"startTime":468.66,"endTime":472.86,"body":"number of pupils studying design"},{"startTime":468.66,"endTime":472.86,"body":"and technology. And we would"},{"startTime":472.86,"endTime":475.41,"body":"also say that this downward"},{"startTime":472.86,"endTime":475.41,"body":"trend is quite complex, there's"},{"startTime":475.41,"endTime":478.38,"body":"been quite a lot written about"},{"startTime":475.41,"endTime":478.38,"body":"about how that's happened. So"},{"startTime":478.62,"endTime":483.36,"body":"it's a very big ambition to do"},{"startTime":478.62,"endTime":483.36,"body":"here, that that on one surface"},{"startTime":483.39,"endTime":485.82,"body":"doesn't seem to be very clear"},{"startTime":483.39,"endTime":485.82,"body":"about which part of design"},{"startTime":485.82,"endTime":489.54,"body":"education, it's about, and it"},{"startTime":485.82,"endTime":489.54,"body":"says, in schools, and I will"},{"startTime":489.54,"endTime":492.06,"body":"then be saying, So what sorts of"},{"startTime":489.54,"endTime":492.06,"body":"schools do you mean? Do you mean"},{"startTime":492.06,"endTime":495.27,"body":"primary? Do you mean secondary?"},{"startTime":492.06,"endTime":495.27,"body":"Do you mean, pupil referral? Do"},{"startTime":495.27,"endTime":498.3,"body":"you mean independent? Or do you"},{"startTime":495.27,"endTime":498.3,"body":"mean state really would rather"},{"startTime":498.3,"endTime":501.33,"body":"say private than independent?"},{"startTime":498.3,"endTime":501.33,"body":"That's a whole other ideology,"},{"startTime":501.45,"endTime":504.99,"body":"ideological conversation I could"},{"startTime":501.45,"endTime":504.99,"body":"go off on. The implication is, as"},{"startTime":538.77,"endTime":541.38,"body":"we read on, that it's around"},{"startTime":541.38,"endTime":546.03,"body":"GCSEs. Okay, so that's, that's a"},{"startTime":541.38,"endTime":546.03,"body":"very long explanation just about"},{"startTime":546.09,"endTime":549.0,"body":"my critique about the the first"},{"startTime":546.09,"endTime":549.0,"body":"aim and not say that the"},{"startTime":549.24,"endTime":554.31,"body":"ambition is ill founded, but the"},{"startTime":549.24,"endTime":554.31,"body":"clarity isn't there. And I had some concerns at"},{"startTime":831.09,"endTime":836.43,"body":"that point. Because I think it's"},{"startTime":836.43,"endTime":838.11,"body":"always about the way the"},{"startTime":836.43,"endTime":838.11,"body":"questions are. So I can't"},{"startTime":838.11,"endTime":840.21,"body":"critique the questions because I"},{"startTime":838.11,"endTime":840.21,"body":"don't have them in front of me."},{"startTime":840.21,"endTime":843.24,"body":"And I've gotta be careful that"},{"startTime":840.21,"endTime":843.24,"body":"I'm not going off on a gut"},{"startTime":843.24,"endTime":847.41,"body":"feeling or a misinterpretation"},{"startTime":843.24,"endTime":847.41,"body":"from last year. Now, I don't know"},{"startTime":869.61,"endTime":874.05,"body":"what question has led to that"},{"startTime":874.05,"endTime":876.84,"body":"analysis. I mean, that could"},{"startTime":874.05,"endTime":876.84,"body":"have been a straightforward"},{"startTime":876.9,"endTime":882.15,"body":"question, as do you believe that"},{"startTime":876.9,"endTime":882.15,"body":"modernising the subjects will"},{"startTime":882.15,"endTime":887.43,"body":"benefit the curriculum? I don't"},{"startTime":882.15,"endTime":887.43,"body":"know. Or it might be select from"},{"startTime":887.43,"endTime":891.72,"body":"these different ways that could"},{"startTime":887.43,"endTime":891.72,"body":"be used to benefit the"},{"startTime":891.72,"endTime":894.96,"body":"curriculum. select as many as"},{"startTime":891.72,"endTime":894.96,"body":"you want, or select three or"},{"startTime":894.96,"endTime":899.97,"body":"your top two or one or rank"},{"startTime":894.96,"endTime":899.97,"body":"them. Okay. But it"},{"startTime":1421.25,"endTime":1423.74,"body":"does talk about curriculum,"},{"startTime":1423.74,"endTime":1427.04,"body":"there is a lack of clarity about"},{"startTime":1423.74,"endTime":1427.04,"body":"what we mean about curriculum in"},{"startTime":1427.04,"endTime":1430.55,"body":"this study. It's very difficult"},{"startTime":1427.04,"endTime":1430.55,"body":"to make that claim if your"},{"startTime":1430.67,"endTime":1435.29,"body":"participants are, for example,"},{"startTime":1430.67,"endTime":1435.29,"body":"predominantly white men from"},{"startTime":1435.29,"endTime":1439.22,"body":"London, who are secondary school"},{"startTime":1435.29,"endTime":1439.22,"body":"teachers who have less than 15"},{"startTime":1439.22,"endTime":1442.37,"body":"years of teaching. I'm only"},{"startTime":1439.22,"endTime":1442.37,"body":"saying I've got no evidence, but"},{"startTime":1442.37,"endTime":1446.96,"body":"that's where a transparency of"},{"startTime":1442.37,"endTime":1446.96,"body":"the participants and the"},{"startTime":1446.96,"endTime":1452.75,"body":"recruitment methods becomes good"},{"startTime":1446.96,"endTime":1452.75,"body":"gives an assurance about the"},{"startTime":1452.75,"endTime":1457.04,"body":"validity and confidence about"},{"startTime":1452.75,"endTime":1457.04,"body":"about the study. So I've been"},{"startTime":1457.04,"endTime":1459.38,"body":"saying to my students, you need"},{"startTime":1457.04,"endTime":1459.38,"body":"to think about your participants"},{"startTime":1459.38,"endTime":1463.4,"body":"and how you are recruiting them."},{"startTime":1459.38,"endTime":1463.4,"body":"And then we'll be looking at the"},{"startTime":1463.4,"endTime":1466.37,"body":"data analysis. So I've kind of"},{"startTime":1463.4,"endTime":1466.37,"body":"intimated this a little bit"},{"startTime":1466.37,"endTime":1470.45,"body":"already. So 2200 Plus teachers,"},{"startTime":1466.37,"endTime":1470.45,"body":"I don't know exactly how many"},{"startTime":1471.11,"endTime":1474.11,"body":"around half believed modernising"},{"startTime":1471.11,"endTime":1474.11,"body":"the subject will benefit the"},{"startTime":1474.11,"endTime":1477.71,"body":"curriculum. Around half is that"},{"startTime":1474.11,"endTime":1477.71,"body":"less than half is that a lot"},{"startTime":1477.71,"endTime":1480.32,"body":"less than half? Is that more"},{"startTime":1477.71,"endTime":1480.32,"body":"than half is that a little bit"},{"startTime":1480.32,"endTime":1483.5,"body":"more than half is that on half"},{"startTime":1480.32,"endTime":1483.5,"body":"now we can know if you're in"},{"startTime":1483.5,"endTime":1488.93,"body":"England or if in Great Britain,"},{"startTime":1483.5,"endTime":1488.93,"body":"that 51% is what took us down,"},{"startTime":1489.26,"endTime":1494.03,"body":"you know, down to the Brexit"},{"startTime":1489.26,"endTime":1494.03,"body":"roots. That means 49% weren't"},{"startTime":1494.03,"endTime":1498.11,"body":"happy about it. And we've also"},{"startTime":1494.03,"endTime":1498.11,"body":"heard about the the issues"},{"startTime":1498.11,"endTime":1503.0,"body":"around data collection and the"},{"startTime":1498.11,"endTime":1503.0,"body":"questions What happened around"},{"startTime":1503.0,"endTime":1506.03,"body":"Brexit? Now I'm not I'm not"},{"startTime":1503.0,"endTime":1506.03,"body":"liking Pearson's study to"},{"startTime":1506.03,"endTime":1509.0,"body":"Brexit, but because there isn't"},{"startTime":1506.03,"endTime":1509.0,"body":"that transparency about what"},{"startTime":1509.0,"endTime":1513.17,"body":"half means or around half, okay?"},{"startTime":1509.0,"endTime":1513.17,"body":"Means it's very difficult. And"},{"startTime":1513.17,"endTime":1516.35,"body":"if it's only around half is that"},{"startTime":1513.17,"endTime":1516.35,"body":"really sufficient to justify"},{"startTime":1516.35,"endTime":1520.46,"body":"putting forward a new a new"},{"startTime":1516.35,"endTime":1520.46,"body":"curriculum. And then the same"},{"startTime":1520.46,"endTime":1523.13,"body":"number it goes on to say, also"},{"startTime":1520.46,"endTime":1523.13,"body":"support both the move to design"},{"startTime":1523.13,"endTime":1525.47,"body":"and technology addressing global"},{"startTime":1523.13,"endTime":1525.47,"body":"challenges and equipping"},{"startTime":1525.47,"endTime":1528.44,"body":"learners with the skills needed"},{"startTime":1525.47,"endTime":1528.44,"body":"in the future workforce.
