Paul Thomas Anderson said his follow up to Magnolia would be an Adam Sandler comedy to which the critics balked. Soon thereafter, PTA would win best director at Cannes and Adam Sandler would be nominated for Best Actor in the Comedy at the Golden Globes. Sandler stars as Barry Eagan, a depressed, socially anxious owner of a novelty bathroom supplies store. Barry meets Lena (Emily Watson) and soon begins to work through his anxieties to date her. Also starring Philip Seymour Hoffman as a mattress salesman and Luis Guzman as his go-to man at the warehouse.
