States of Emergency: Ecuador, California, and the Anthropocene Age
Oct 15, 2019
Sarajolena, Ramasubranian and friends

After Sara Jolena Wolcott and Ramasubramanian (Ram) traveled to Quito, Ecuador for the NEXUS global conference, they were immediately caught in political unrest as the country began to convulse in a strong reaction against the IMF agreement the President had signed the day Sara and Ram landed in Quito. after several days of increasing political uncertainty, they decided to leave the country earlier than scheduled. They flew to California, Sara's home, and quickly found themselves in another state of Emergency: the "planned" power outages of PG&E. The combination of these two experiences back to back in different parts of the world led them to host conversations discussing what it means to move into a State of Emergency.

This is not a "normal" podcast - it is a recording of a live discussion hosted at Shelley Tanenbaum's house in Albany, California. Shelley is the Director of Quaker Earthcare Witness. The first part is Sara and Ram sharing about their experiences and then group discussion.  The recording devices were shifted early on in the conversation and so the first 5 minutes, when Sara gives a background summary of why Ram was denied entry to Ecuador because the rules for visa requirements for Indian nationals had changed at the last minute, and the eventual need to call in the Secretary of State of Ecuador in order to issue him a last minute visa, is absent. At this point, the first 18 seconds are quiet.
