Maybe you're like me as a podcast for dreamers and doers who take life's lessons and level up to look more like Christ. We'll connect through super relatable stories, growing pains and aha moments that most of us share, just not always out loud. I'm your host, Alicia Watson, creative entrepreneur, playwright, author, wife, mother, daughter of the king, and so much more. And I can't help but to think that Maybe You like me.

2 (45s):
Hey, beautiful people. Thank you for joining me for another episode of Maybe You're Like Me with Alicia. Watson. How are you doing? Me? I'm doing great. I'm back into the swing of things and everything is really running smoothly for the first time in a while because for a while there my creative stuff just stopped being fun. I stopped picking up my camera, I stopped breaking out my paint brushes. I mean, my house used to be just so much fun for me to decorate, but lately even that my design has just really stale to me and I'm sick of looking at things, but I wasn't doing things there mainly because I wasn't sure I was gonna stay and didn't really want to invest the time, money, or energy. But since we did decide to stay here in the area, we started making long overdue improvements and it's really given a fresh feeling and it's refreshed me.

2 (1m 29s):
It's hard to be in an uninspiring space, right? So even small changes like paint new curtains and a deck really make really, really make the space feel brand new. So I'm in a pretty good mood over here all around. Anyway, today's topic I wanna touch on because it's a topic I've explored lately with some of my best buddies. It's something that I've seen a lot, especially in the girl boss space on and offline, and I've even falling victim to it myself. So no judgment, but Maybe, you're like me and you're letting your ego run your business. I won't say that this is a problem so much for me right now in this current season because of the work that I've done over the years, just mentally, emotionally, just interpersonally.

2 (2m 12s):
I've learned to define success for myself, and that has really like changed things for me because I basically base it on obedience rather than, you know, numbers, finances and other milestones. Those things are great, right? We know that. And you know, they should be in business. But we also know that the enemy can bless you too, quote unquote. So I don't want all of the trappings of wealth and notoriety and popularity, but to be out of alignment with and at odds with God. So I hold tight to Matthew 6 33 in how I conduct my life, which is, you know, seek the kingdom of God above all else and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need. But for a long while, even before I started my business, I was driven by ego.

2 (2m 54s):
I wanted to appear a certain way. I was being a perfectionist. I was striving to be unquote successful in the way that people saw success and would acknowledge success even if it really didn't even mean that much to me. You know, if you've been nervous about delivering an important speech or presentation, someone has probably suggested that you imagine everyone in the audience in their underwear. And I assume this is because not everyone who shows up to hear you will be an underwear model. And if they only knew that you were seeing them in their underwear, they would have no room to judge you for the quality of your speech. They would feel just as exposed as you standing up there all alone, all eyes on you. And I believe the reason for this is that the thought of nakedness denotes a certain level of vulnerability.

2 (3m 38s):
There are no trappings, no shake wear, no distinguishing, a dormant on which to assign any value, right? Just you. And that's a scary thought. For most. It's a dreadful thing to be naked physically, even spiritually and emotionally before people whom we are not sure we can trust with that vulnerability. So we cover up by putting on Hes we stunt, we flex, we pretend, we exaggerate, we boast and brag, sharing all of our wins, none of our Ls, and we create an acceptable narrative and aspirational narrative. And this is not a new concept. Even before social media, there was keeping up the, When we look at the story of Adam and Eve prior to the fall, they were naked and they felt no shame.

2 (4m 22s):
After the fall, they discovered they were naked, became afraid, and hit the beginning of a habit that would last for generations to come. Inevitably though, one day the curve will fall on all of our performances, right? The charade dissipates, leaving you exposed, center stage, hunched over, hiding your most private parts, eyes wide like a deer in headlights. You're gonna miss a deadline. You're gonna get fired. You're gonna go through a divorce. Your business is gonna fail, whatever the truth is revealed, and you're vulnerable. And what's worse, because they don't wanna be affected by your downfall. People who once stood boldly by your side when you were winning will run and hide from the aftermath. But the beauty is that while you watch the backs of those running away gets smaller and smaller in the distance, God stands facing you, feet firmly planted with arms open wide.

2 (5m 11s):
He doesn't fear your failure. He will be seeking you out. Just like when he was looking for Adam and Eve, He'll ask, Where are you? Then? He'll do when only he can do, he'll cover you, the exposed parts of you, the hurt parts of you, the scared parts of you, the most vulnerable parts of you. Just like with Adam and Eve, when you reveal yourself to him, open your heart and trust him with your truth. He will cover you and you shame. He will explain what happened and where you fell short. He'll give you directions on how to move forward. The Bible study in mankind didn't end right there in Genesis. He didn't wipe the slate clean, not immediately anyway, but even when he did, he let Noah and the crew keep the party going Anyways, your story goes on too.

2 (5m 55s):
So don't hide your shame. Allow God to cover you like I'm pretty sure he's done before. Don't let your ego get in the way. Failing is a part of business in life. Taking risk is a part of business in life. There's no one way to completely avoid being vulnerable, but your ego will have you thinking. It all depends on you. It doesn't. God can use your mistakes, your imperfections, your shirt comings for your good and his glory too. He can use everything that you actually are when you show up as your true and authentic self. The fullness of yourself to help others and to help you. Today, I encourage you to reflect on a time where through God's covering, you've rebounded from a type of hopelessness or fear and or shame.

2 (6m 40s):
And let that feel your decisions this week in faith and hope so. Don't let your ego run your business. Let God run your business. Well, that's all I have for you today.
