Maybe You're Like Me with Alicia Watson

Ep. 54 | ... and you're ready for some action

Alicia L. Watson Season 4

Maybe you're like me and you're ready for some action.

Action is the word of the day and I hope you're ready for it!

There are so many things that stop us from taking action and getting motion. I know for me there are situations (real or imagined) that make me want to sit in the space of comfort that I’m in, comfort that doesn’t require me to face my fears.  But as 2 Timothy 1:7 reminds us, God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, of love and self-control. Which means we have more than enough to make some moves and make something shake, to change the trajectory of our lives, to be something different, so we can see something different.

I hope you're ready to make moves and make 2026 your most fruitful and active year yet! I know I am. Let's see what God's going to do in and through us.

Need more motivation to get in motion? Listen to Ep. 52.

Hey, beautiful people. Thank you for joining me for another episode of Maybe You're Like Me with Alicia Watson. Welcome to the first episode of season four. Wow. This season is going to be full of joy and creativity and action. Action is the word of the day, though. There are so many things that stop us from taking action and from getting motion. I know for me, there are situations, real or imagined that make me want to sit in a space of comfort, comfort that doesn't require me to face my fears. But as 2nd Timothy 1: 7 reminds us, God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power of love and of self-control, which means we have more than enough to make some moves and make something shake. We have more than enough to change the trajectory of our lives. We have more than enough to be something different so that we can see something different.

So maybe you're like me and you're ready for some action. That's right. I'm ready. Put me in the game, coach. Now, are you ready? Maybe. I bet this is right on time for you. I know it is. I can feel it in my heart. I can it in my soul. I feel it in my spirit. It's what you really need to hear right now. And I'm about to hype you up, bestie, because guess what? It's time and time is running out. Beautiful people, it's time to move those beautiful feet. Oh, by the way, that's why I address you as beautiful people.

Not because I think you're as fine as frog hair, you might be, but because I think that the people listening to this podcast, when I think of you guys, I think of Isaiah 52 seven that says, how beautiful on the mountains are the feet of those who bring good news, who proclaim peace, who bring good tidings, who proclaim salvation and who say to Zion, your God reigns. That's us. That's me. That's you. That's what we're here to do. We're beautiful people with beautiful feet.

And how we uniquely do that is according to our design and according to God's will and plan for our lives. As I heavily elaborated on in the last season, I am over 40 now and I have pretty much half of my life ahead of me. And I'm still very excited about the things I've been called to do. I've changed, but the mission hasn't, right? And one of those things is returning to acting again. So the word of the day action is irrelevant, both literally and figuratively for me.

So we all know when the director calls lights camera action, you're being told to prepare, position and move kind of like ready, set, go in a race. Action is the word of the day because I so often get stuck in the preparation and positioning of it all, but I don't move on to the action part. Maybe you're like me and maybe that's true for you too. Because if you're like me, the planning part is exciting. It's so exciting. The ideation is exciting. It's so exciting. The preparation feels productive.

I love to share my ideas and what I'm going to do and what I'd like to do and even how I plan to do it. Sometimes when I simply share a vision, it feels like I've executed on that vision, but I haven't. You can't tell that to my brain because the dopamine hit that I get when I tell somebody my dreams and my plans and my goals and what God is doing and what he's going to do through me, it's just so good. It seems to be enough for me, but it's not enough because the goal is action.

The goal is the execution. The goal is the completion. It is the action that creates progress. It is the action that creates impact. It is in the action and through the action that the story gets told, in my case. I'm a storyteller. Everything that I do requires action, requires visibility, it requires connection, it requires me opening up my mouth or putting myself out there in some ways, and I don't like that.

But it's not about what I like. Like God will give you an assignment that goes beyond what you like, goes beyond what makes you feel comfortable, goes beyond what you want to do just so that you know it's him doing it. Hello Gideon. Because it's the action that brings about change and it's the action that pleases God. And that's the point, isn't it? To please and glorify God. Right? So quick question. You've planned, you prepared, you've practiced, you perfected, but you haven't taken any action. Why?

What's stopping you? Is it fear? Is it perfectionism? Are you worried about what people will say or do? Do you lack resources? Do you lack confidence? Do you lack support? Can I tell you what you don't lack? You don't lack a spirit of power, love, and self-control. Those are what you don't lack. Because God didn't give us a spirit of fear. He gave us those things. So tap into those things. Tap into power, whether it's physical, through the disciplining and controlling of our bodies.

Spiritual - through the prayer and fasting that we are called to do, or social through our influence and networks to get things done, to make your moves, to happen to love. It's God's love that covers you and that covers those you're called to serve with your assignment. It covers a multitude of sins. It redeems. It's everything in 1 Corinthians 13, 4 through 13 that you can go back and read, and counter the spirit of fear with the word of truth.

And tap into self-control because although you can't control anyone or anything else, you can control yourself. And you may be controlling yourself just in the wrong way. Like Jonah, are you using your free will to go the opposite direction from where God is sending you? Are you doing that because you're trying to control outcomes that you can't guarantee or even outcomes that you can predict correctly? Like, you know how people are going to respond, but you move in obedience anyway.

You know that they're not going to apologize, but you love and forgive anyway. You know they're going to squander your generosity, but you give and be charitable anyway. You know that they're not going to like or share your post, but you post it for who it's for, not for who you wish would support you. Obedience starts with self-control. Your actions are what you can control. Execution is what you can control. The outcomes are God's business.

Their responses to the warning or the truth that God told you to give is based on that same free will and spirit of self-control that God gives you and them. Because that's what's important, that God's will gets done, not that your fears are appeased. Or that people behave like you want them to. Or that people get the consequences that you hope they would. Can I tell you something else that you might be lacking? Reverence. I fear that we don't fear God enough. And I'm being serious. I'm including myself in this.

A lot of times, I am too slow to act. I'm too wrapped up in self-preservation to be obedient. I have too many questions, too many doubts, too many no's and yeses clothing, false yeses, lip service, because my desire to feel safe and comfortable and at peace sometimes outweighs my desires to be obedient. But when you have reverence for God, your fear of everything else takes a backseat.

Matthew 10:28 says, don't fear those who kill the body but are not able to kill the soul. Rather fear him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell. I'm learning to fear him not because of hell. we, none of us, none of us want to go to hell, right? Right? But the point is to fear him because he is able. Like who else is able to destroy your body in hell? Just God.

He's on a different level than anyone else and everyone else. His will and his purpose is above anyone else's and everyone else's. He's sovereign, he's ruler, he's king, he's creator, he's unmatched, unparalleled, universally unbought and unbossed. Above all, my light and salvation, whom shall I fear and of whom shall I be afraid? The word of the day is action because we need to act, fam, with urgency and intention.

We need to make moves. The door has been open and we've yet to walk through it. Walk through it, take action, move those beautiful feet and as you go, go with God. As you go, look to him for guidance and instruction and understanding and peace. You won't be alone. You're never alone. Trust him, fear him, love him, love his people and take action.

And that's all I have for you today.
