Welcome, entrepreneurs and seekers of wellness to another episode of Breaking Boundaries for Entrepreneurs, the podcast that brings you leading-edge insights to elevate your health, your well-being, your mind and, ultimately, your success. I'm your host, jeffrey Mort, certified Integrative Health Practitioner, and today we are diving deep into a topic that might surprise you the power of something you can find for just a few dollars at your local grocery store or, even more preferably, at your local farmer's market, and I'm talking about cruciferous vegetables and the incredible compound they contain called sulforaphane. Now, as entrepreneurs, we're always looking for that extra edge, that secret sauce to fuel our success, and today I'm excited as if you couldn't tell to share with you a natural solution that might just be what you're looking for, and it's called sulforaphane, and it's found abundantly in cruciferous vegetables like broccoli and kale and Brussels sprouts and other ones that we're going to talk about today. Now I know when you think about that extra edge or the secret sauce to fuel your success, you're success. Your mind's not going to broccoli or kale or Brussels sprouts. But stay with me here. I'm going to deliver to you what sulforaphane can do for you, and it's not just any compound, it is a powerhouse with a laundry list of benefits, from fighting cancer to supporting brain health. Sulforaphane is a game changer when it comes to optimizing your well-being and your performance. Now I do want to give you my disclaimer that I'm not here to claim, you know, provide any medical advice or claim to prevent or diagnose or treat or cure any diseases, but what I can help you do is get to the underlying root causes of the chronic health issues that you're going through, and I can help you to optimize your health, and I can help you to stay optimized for the rest of your life. Now let's start by unpackingelches what's called free radicals. Free radicals get generated from oxidative stress in the body, so oxidative stress is like the body rusting from the inside out, and free radicals well, I'm not going to get into the theory of electron exchange and what happens with free radicals. But just know that that is the root of disease. Exchange and what happens with free radicals, but just know that that is the root of disease. And antioxidants have been shown to inhibit cancer cell growth, promote detoxification and even enhance cognitive function. That's right, folks, eating your broccoli could make you smarter. And when we were kids who knew when grandma or your mom was trying to tell you that you know, eating your broccoli and your Brussels sprouts were going to help make you smarter and live a longer life, you know she was right. That's all I have to say.

But how exactly does sulforaphane work? It's magic, you might be wondering. Well, it all starts with the humble cruciferous of vegetable. And when we eat these veggies, this group of veggies and I'm going to give you some specific ones in just a moment an enzyme called myrosinase is activated, and what this does is it converts glucoraphanin into sulforaphane. Now, there's something in between the glucoraphanin and sulforaphane that's called broccophane. That plays a role in there. But and we just wolf our food down without chewing it up. Now the chewing process is what actually creates this alchemy. It creates that conversion process of the myrosinase into the sulforaphane by actually chewing, so it's very, very important, especially with the raw vegetables, if you're eating those.

Now let's talk about the studies around cancer prevention and treatment, and I'm going to link up these studies for you in today's episode and also on our accompanying blog post over at lovinagwellnesscom slash learn. You can read all about it over there and get some other insights on this same topic. But research suggests that sulforaphane has the potential to inhibit cancer cell growth. It also can induce programmed cellular death, which means it's going to get rid of those zombie cells, these senescent cells that could be hanging around causing health issues, and have even been shown to reduce the risk of cancer reoccurrence. Now, that's a powerful ally in the fight against one of the most formidable foes in our health. And you know I think it's the National Cancer Institute estimates that in 2030, I think it's the National Cancer Institute estimates that in 2030, which isn't that far away that one in three people, that's 33% of people, will have some form of cancer. So it doesn't stop there.

Sulforaphane also plays a crucial role in detoxification, activating more antioxidant pathways in the body, supporting the elimination of toxins. Now I'm specifically speaking about the liver. So if you've been feeling sluggish or weighed down by environmental pollutants, sulforaphane might just be the solution that you've been searching for. Now I will share with you that. I mentioned broccophane earlier and broccophane is one of the six main ingredients in our 7, 14, or 21-day functional medicine detox. That was formulated by my mentor, naturopathic Dr Stephen Cabral, that we use in our practice for every single client. That we use in our practice for every single client and we also do this as a community over at our Love Energy Wellness community online. We do this every 90 days. As a matter of fact, if you're watching this on video, I actually have my detox shake going right now because I am on day three of a seven-day functional medicine detox here for springtime as I'm recording this. So in that detox protocol there is that precursor, broccophane, which is a precursor to sulforaphane. So I can't link that up because I mentioned diseases and other things, but I can tell you where you can find it over at loveenergywellnesscom slash shop or jeffreymortcom slash shop. But perhaps most exciting this is so exciting. Most exciting of all is the emerging research on sulforaphane's impact on brain health. Studies have shown that sulforaphane may improve memory, reduce neuroinflammation and even protect against neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's and Parkinson's. Now that is what I call brain food, and I will link up that research for you as well. Now you might be wondering which cruciferous vegetables pack the biggest punch when it comes to sulforaphane. Well, wonder no more, my friends. From broccoli to Brussels sprouts, these veggies are bursting with this powerful compound, giving you yet another reason to load up your plate with nature's goodness. Now that we've explored the benefits of sulforaphane, let's look at which of these cruciferous vegetables are the richest in this compound.

So here's a list of 10, from the lowest to the highest concentration. Number one is radish. Now, radish has from 0.5 to 1.5 micromoles per 100 grams as a content. Now I'll explain what a micromole is in just a minute. So I'm just going to give you as I go through these 10, I'm going to give you the range. So 0.5 to 0.1 on the radish Now. Number two is watercress, and that's 1.5 to 3.5 micromoles. Number three is arugula that's two to five micromoles.

Kale everybody's favorite is kale. It reminds me of the meme or the social media posts that I see about. The best way to eat kale is, you know, step one put it on your plate. Step two scrape it in the trash. I don't use kale that often, I don't absolutely love it, but it has some value and it has between three and seven micromoles per 100 grams of sulforaphane.

Number five is collard greens, and that has four to eight micromoles in it. Number six broccoli our all star here. Between five and 10 micromoles. So you can see how quickly we're going up the scale here. Number seven cauliflower that albino broccoli, as I've heard it referred to Cauliflower 6 to 12 micromoles per 100 grams.

Number eight Brussels sprouts. I actually love Brussels sprouts. They have such a unique flavor, especially when you put a high-quality olive oil on them. I love steaming them. They have between 7 and 15 micromoles. And next, number nine cabbage. Cabbage is another all-star with between 8 and 18 micromoles. Now you might be wondering why such the variance there, and it all depends on the way it was grown. Is it grown in a particular type of farming where it's going to produce more of these antioxidants and nutrients? And then number 10, we're back to that all-star of broccoli, but in a different form. Broccoli sprouts have between 10 and 50 micromoles per 100 grams. I absolutely always have broccoli sprouts going. I put them in a salad, or I'll put them in a soup, or actually I even feed them to my dog for the detoxification benefits. And we can probably do another podcast episode on how integrative health aligns with the concepts in the book Forever Dog. So there it is, those 10 cruciferous vegetables.

And to give you a better sense of just how small a micro mole is, consider that a typical adult human body contains approximately seven octillion atoms. That's a seven, followed by 27 zeros. So, in contrast, a, a micromole, is just one millionth of that amount. It's an incredibly tiny quantity, but still significant in the context of biochemical reactions and pharmacological dosages. So to make it more relatable, think of a micromole as a single drop of water in a very large swimming pool. And while a single drop may be, it may seem insignificant, it's still part of the larger hole and can have a measurable impact when combined with all the other drops. So, similarly, micro moles may be small, but they play a crucial role in many biological processes. So here's the kicker Incorporating sulforaphane-rich vegetables into your diet is easier than you might think.
