morning about 7.30 that his daughter, 44 years old, her name's Jennifer she passed out and her neighbor was resuscitating, keeping her alive until the ambulance came and then she had, you know, brain swelling, just I mean, just she had a full blown heart attack at a very young age, like that, and right now she's in ICU, she's unconscious, and they're doing what they can to keep her alive right now and doing whatever. 00:03:21.168 --> 00:03:28.006 There's a blood clot in her heart and so what they're doing is trying to work to dissolve that or whatever. 00:03:28.006 --> 00:03:30.408 And he Thank desperation that comes from a father and mother on their daughter, and I said, not only was my heart connected with them this morning in prayer, but that I would bring it before our congregation this ear, would you agree with us for Jennifer's life, for healing, for God's mercy, and we were talking about? 00:04:10.962 --> 00:04:24.598 You know these things, they can go either way, and so we want them to go this way, and so let's ask God for the way we want it to go, and let's ask God for mercy and healing, and he's done it before and you know he can do it again. 00:04:24.598 --> 00:04:24.759 grow up, maybe, or what congregation that you're in. 00:06:06.769 --> 00:06:14.790 I know for many churches, when the word of the Lord is read or when the scripture is read, people then respond with an amen because that is the word. 00:06:14.790 --> 00:06:26.790 But if you grow up Dennis and I grew up in the Chicago area and we were a part of a congregation that was largely African American and their amen meant they felt the spirit move. 00:06:26.790 --> 00:06:29.769 Any time you felt connection, it was an amen. 00:06:29.769 --> 00:06:33.343 It didn't have to be a specific thing, but it was. space to the Holy Spirit in our practices. 00:07:15.050 --> 00:07:29.642 Thomas reminded us this morning that this season of the year for us is epiphany, and we live in Florida, so we kind of have an somewhere cold, the trees are barren, or if you live in a desert, the trees are barren. 00:07:37.642 --> 00:07:43.242 In fact, this week, a practice in ancient Judaism is the happy new year to the trees. 00:07:43.242 --> 00:07:45.233 There's a tree new year a day. 00:07:45.233 --> 00:08:21.196 You celebrate because nothing looks like it's happening, and so you celebrate with the trees that there is stuff happening underground that we cannot see, there are things happening that we are aware of until the spring, and so I was thinking about how beautiful it was to practice in the time when I don't see anything, that life is coming, that newness is coming, that resurrection is coming, and so we invite you this morning to set your heart, to attune your heart to the presence of spirit sudden, to go into the church and after the pastor would read a good verse, then just this resounding yes, lord, you know, and so I still hear that you know in my heart, when something good comes from these scriptures to connect with my spirit yes, lord, and I just and I think that that comes because we fellowshiped outside of our comfort zone, outside of maybe what we thought was our people, to is those kind of connections with us and we are again just grateful for the presence that is here this morning and I invite you to attune yourself to that particular presence when we I was thinking about this, the text and even the verses that we read this morning from the Psalms His faithful love endures forever. 00:10:11.515 --> 00:10:12.619 We can't get past that. 00:10:12.619 --> 00:10:14.402 I mean, this is the writer of the Psalms. 00:10:14.402 --> 00:10:23.615 We can thank for all these things and they produce in us a thankfulness, but the basis for them is the faithful love is so all encompassing and together we're reminded that we all begin in love and love is going to be the end of us as well. 00:10:36.096 --> 00:10:54.644 When we return to God, we return to love and there is hope for us in the practice of returning to love, returning to the good, paying attention to how our eyes can be illumined, to listen to the trees, to listen to hope, to listen to the 00:11:17.311 That's true. 00:11:17.311 --> 00:11:39.789 We were looking at a picture online of an olive tree that is over 2,000 years old and it's still growing and it's still producing fruit, and they were talking about where this tree is located and all of the things that have happened in mankind since that tree began bearing fruit the fall of the Roman Empire you know all of these things that were happening, and this tree just stands there. 00:11:39.789 --> 00:11:46.789 I mean, people clash, worlds change, empires fall, and the tree is standing there bearing fruit. 00:11:46.789 --> 00:11:49.477 This is what I do to glorify God. 00:11:49.477 --> 00:11:52.157 I make olives, and so I encourage you today. 00:11:52.157 --> 00:11:57.789 What do you do to glorify God in all of your uniqueness, in all of who you are individually? 00:11:57.789 --> 00:12:03.682 Every tree has purpose, every tree has beauty, every tree has a story to tell. 00:12:03.682 --> 00:12:14.764 Every tree is necessary, and so when we allow nature to testify to us that our plant, our goodness, the fruit that is born in us, that's for the whole world. 00:12:14.764 --> 00:12:17.379 And empires may fall Some of them need to. 00:12:18.514 --> 00:12:36.119 Systems may change they all need to but love and the bearing and the rootedness in love matters essentially, they say about an olive tree that it's the only tree that you would plant for the next generation, because oftentimes an olive tree won't bear fruit for 70 years, you know. 00:12:36.119 --> 00:12:40.174 So you're planting that for something else, and I think we tend to. 00:12:40.174 --> 00:12:50.240 You know we better get it in 30 minutes or less, or that pizza's free, you know, and we want our production quickly. 00:12:50.240 --> 00:12:52.216 You know we want it all cooked in the microwave. 00:12:52.216 --> 00:13:13.841 And what if God's shown us that there's maybe in that patience, there is something beautiful that's being established, that isn't just some junk food with a bunch of carbs in it, but maybe it's something that is holy and healthy and life-giving for generations. 00:13:13.841 --> 00:13:14.243 Amen. 00:13:14.870 --> 00:13:22.663 We look at the imagery of a tree this morning and I think that it's an awareness, perhaps in the way that you read scripture. 00:13:22.663 --> 00:13:27.058 The scripture starts with a tree, a few trees, a garden in effect. 00:13:27.058 --> 00:13:32.660 But there's two trees in particular a tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. 00:13:32.660 --> 00:13:49.389 And even the first time that we're given a conversation, the words of a conversation, between God and a man, it's well, they're hiding in under a fig tree and we see all, in fact, in the scriptures people are mentioned, god is mentioned, and trees. 00:13:49.389 --> 00:13:50.173 That's how it works. 00:13:50.173 --> 00:13:51.912 That's the order of how many things be preserved. 00:13:51.912 --> 00:13:54.413 So pay attention to the trees that are written in scripture. 00:13:54.413 --> 00:14:03.874 In fact, one of the times in scripture it says you'll be like a tree planted by the rivers of living water, whose leaves do not wither and whatever God is doing in you, that will prosper. 00:14:03.874 --> 00:14:32.134 And then there's beautiful imagery that God will make his people like oaks, that flourish, that the temple of the Lord would be like the cedars of Lebanon, and there's incredible imagery, and in fact we even see in the story that we love, in the story that forms us, where Jesus has a particular time with a tree, and the tree did nothing wrong, but we as people took that tree and used it to harm love, and so we look at that and then God redeems it. 00:14:32.134 --> 00:14:48.349 I was thinking about all the things that God is redeeming and Jesus redeems, even creation at that moment, even the things that we meant for harm, that there's a promise that creation will be redeemed and we as believers get to procreate, we get to be a part of this new world and this new creation. 00:14:48.349 --> 00:14:52.695 In your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. 00:14:52.695 --> 00:15:03.136 There is a new heaven coming, but it's also attached to a new earth, and the new earth happens when we allow this spirit of God to bring us into newness. 00:15:03.264 --> 00:15:08.153 In the book, the very end of the book, there is a vision, a prophecy. 00:15:08.153 --> 00:15:16.874 In the book of Revelation, and in the very end, there's a tree that gives life to all the nations and is medicine for the healing of all people. 00:15:16.874 --> 00:15:20.347 I look around, beloved, and many people are sick in many ways. 00:15:20.347 --> 00:15:30.053 We are sick as nations, we are sick as people groups, and we need the tree of life that God is giving to heal our hearts, to heal us as people. 00:15:30.053 --> 00:15:33.769 And so, as I see all this imagery, I look and remind you. 00:15:33.769 --> 00:15:34.953 Lent is coming. 00:15:34.953 --> 00:15:38.832 What a beautiful process for us, what a beautiful time for us, as much as epiphany. 00:15:38.832 --> 00:15:56.950 And maybe this epiphany will lead us into this Lent, while we will listen to the preaching of the trees, we will listen as the trees sway and move and do what they do, no matter what comes, and there's hope for us in remembering and in allowing nature to testify to us of the goodness of God. 00:15:57.504 --> 00:16:07.955 In September, heather and I were in Wales, over in the United Kingdom, and we were getting our keys to spend the night and the people there were asking us what we were planning on doing. 00:16:07.955 --> 00:16:11.668 So we're kind of just drifting wherever kind of the Lord leads us. 00:16:11.668 --> 00:16:15.429 And the guy said well, you know, not far from here is an ancient forest. 00:16:15.429 --> 00:16:22.115 Would you like to go see an ancient forest, the oldest forest in the entire United Kingdom? 00:16:22.115 --> 00:16:25.514 And I'm like, yeah, I'm into that. 00:16:25.514 --> 00:16:27.945 And so they told us where to get there. 00:16:27.945 --> 00:16:33.470 In fact, the guy pulled up my phone and did a GPS thing and he goes to park right here, and so he put a little pin. 00:16:33.470 --> 00:16:43.192 And so the next day we drove there and it was real high like mountain, and Heather said, well, you go on, and she wouldn't sit in the car and pray or whatever. 00:16:43.192 --> 00:16:46.607 And so I started hiking up there and I don't know what I was gonna see in an ancient forest. 00:16:46.607 --> 00:16:48.227 But, boy, I was excited to get up that hill. 00:16:48.227 --> 00:17:00.169 And so I was cranking up the hill and about 30 minutes I'm up real high, but I didn't find whatever I thought I was gonna stumble into and I was kind of disappointed and I said, god, what's the deal? 00:17:00.169 --> 00:17:04.270 You know, I'm up in this ancient forest and I'm just, I feel nothing. 00:17:05.890 --> 00:17:06.653 And I hiked up there. 00:17:06.653 --> 00:17:11.070 I bought special hiking boots, shoes, tennis shoes that were waterproof, so I could hike. 00:17:11.070 --> 00:17:14.609 And I felt like the Lord said I want you to take your shoes off. 00:17:14.609 --> 00:17:17.050 And I'm like that doesn't sound like a good idea. 00:17:17.050 --> 00:17:17.772 I'm a tender foot. 00:17:17.772 --> 00:17:23.067 I can't even walk across sand without getting stubbing my toe. 00:17:23.067 --> 00:17:32.992 And so I took off my shoes and all of a sudden I started walking real slow and I felt like the Lord said just go over here by this tree. 00:17:32.992 --> 00:17:34.951 And I was well, lord, that's off the path. 00:17:34.951 --> 00:17:37.372 You already know how my feet are. 00:17:37.372 --> 00:17:39.491 You know now I'm stepping on pine cones, ow, woo. 00:17:39.491 --> 00:17:45.367 And all of this caused me to start moving my feet much slower. 00:17:45.367 --> 00:17:48.705 And I stopped and I felt like the Lord just had me sit down. 00:17:48.705 --> 00:17:51.829 And I sat down by this old tree and I'm like what is going on? 00:17:51.829 --> 00:17:55.951 And I really felt like the Lord said I want to speak to you through this tree. 00:17:55.951 --> 00:17:58.132 And I thought, well, now I've just officially gone crazy. 00:17:58.132 --> 00:18:02.316 You know, the church used to make. 00:18:02.316 --> 00:18:03.028 We already knew that. 00:18:03.028 --> 00:18:03.711 But see, I did it. 00:18:03.711 --> 00:18:04.848 And so that's what shocked me. 00:18:05.444 --> 00:18:11.450 And I'm up there and I'm like people make fun of tree huggers and now I'm becoming one. 00:18:11.450 --> 00:18:12.167 What's going on, lord? 00:18:12.167 --> 00:18:25.989 And I'm sitting there and I look at this tree and I realized all at once that this tree was covered with several different kind of mosses, completely covered. 00:18:25.989 --> 00:18:37.794 And then, when it got up about this high, I noticed these big, thick vines that had completely encompassed this giant tree, wrapped it around, and then all these different vines were hanging off and all these different things. 00:18:37.794 --> 00:18:50.875 And I'm looking at this tree and I realized that I couldn't even see the tree because of all of the life that that tree was supporting. 00:18:50.875 --> 00:18:56.538 The tree itself was. 00:18:56.538 --> 00:18:58.683 I was unable to see that. 00:18:58.683 --> 00:19:10.358 It was even there, but it was no less a giant, strong, amazing tree. 00:19:10.358 --> 00:19:17.313 But it allowed itself to be covered by the life that it was supporting. 00:19:19.210 --> 00:19:35.056 And I sat there and God said that's what it is to be a father, that's what it is to be the father of a church that you'd stop wanting to be seen and you'd allow that life that you support to flourish. 00:19:35.684 --> 00:19:42.070 And every kind of moss and vine up in that ancient forest was growing so beautifully. 00:19:43.405 --> 00:19:50.921 And I thought about those amazing of the children that God put in Heather and I's life. 00:19:50.921 --> 00:20:06.815 And how can this tree be strong, be no less a tree, but allow that life to just overtake and grow, and much more the gifts of each one of you that are part of this church? 00:20:06.815 --> 00:20:16.239 And how can we fan the flames of the fire of God in your life and the life of God just to be stirred? 00:20:16.239 --> 00:21:08.815 And so I realized I was spoken to and I absorbed it, and I walked down that entire mountain with my shoes off and I took every step very carefully, very intentionally, because I think that when you have that place of vulnerability of your shoes off, you will look carefully about your steps, because your steps are important, they're so crucial to the directions that you're going and the path that you're on, and when you run up the mountain you get nothing, but you can walk down and count those steps and just hear from heaven, and so all of you book a trip so that you can go to the ancient forest. 00:21:08.815 --> 00:21:10.909 No, what's my point to this? 00:21:11.811 --> 00:21:15.240 One of the things that I'm most inspired by. 00:21:15.240 --> 00:21:23.557 That story is somebody who didn't know us, who looked at us and said I know this really great place, you might want to avail yourself to it. 00:21:23.557 --> 00:21:29.699 And then proceeded to tell us exactly where he had found this ancient forest. 00:21:29.699 --> 00:21:41.659 And I was thinking that's what love looks like for all of us, if we would say I found love and open your phone for me so I can show you exactly where to go, where you also can have this experience. 00:21:41.659 --> 00:21:43.436 And that's what we do in our lives. 00:21:43.436 --> 00:21:58.979 We are the guides, the witnesses who will say if you show me where your map is, I'll show you where love is, I'll show you where the source of all love is, where God is, where hope is and there's such a responsibility. 00:21:58.979 --> 00:22:05.576 But what a beautiful expression of God who shows up in ways to say this is where the good stuff is. 00:22:05.576 --> 00:22:12.940 Taste and see that love is good, that God is good, that He's like you're gonna go to the ancient forest and then you'll have the best fish and chips and you'll go to the shed. 00:22:29.772 --> 00:22:33.952 And here's where it is, and we'd met Jesus there at the shed and it was glorious. 00:22:35.529 --> 00:22:38.198 So he had many good things to say but risked himself. 00:22:38.198 --> 00:22:45.939 We may have had a plan and we may have shut him down, read it at home. 00:22:57.690 --> 00:23:08.796 Paul is reminding himself that God's love included the Gentiles, and he's reminding himself this was the plan all along, that it wasn't gonna be just for that's not how I saw the world before, and he's talking about his own epiphany I have had an understanding, a change, that how I thought God was coming, how I thought Christ was coming, how I thought the plan was coming, was that it would be for us, and for us only. 00:23:33.529 --> 00:23:38.220 And Paul had this epiphany, had this time where his eyes were opened to the love of Christ. Christmas Eve day we went outside to find one of our goats giving birth to a little baby goat, and the mother was in tremendous distress and it turns out she had another baby that had died and so, in all this stress with her, she was unwilling to feed Kevin that's the goat's name, silas named it, talked to him about it, but for now, the past whatever six weeks, or whatever five, six times a day, kevin is bottle-fed while we go outside and get him and he runs between your legs and trips you on the way like a cat, you know, and then he hangs around with you like a dog and he's walking in and out of the house and he jumped up on my stomach and after he was bottle-fed so he could fall asleep, and Kevin is. 00:35:10.297 --> 00:35:35.197 It is such a delight to, you know, move to that place of discomfort, of inconveniencing ourselves, to have to go make a bottle for a goat and just see Kevin's excitement and his delight, and that, you know, and God really began to stern me. 00:35:35.197 grow in me, that I want to be that kind of person of infinite love that we can allow these signposts in our life and people, that God wants to do that in you, not that we'd be scaricing our look of love, but that we would allow the abundance of that to provide for all those people that are around us. 00:41:06.780 --> 00:41:09.027 What a glorious hope that our love could expand. 00:41:09.027 --> will impact people more when we can love them in traffic, we can show some kind of grace in the line at the supermarket, that we can be at work and be willing to do the job no one else wants to do.
