Biggest offseason shakeups in the Trinity League

Hello, everybody, and welcome back to the Trinity League Football Podcast and a special summer preview as we get closer to the quickly approaching uh high school football season here in Southern California. I'm your host, Dan Albano with the Orange County Register and OC Varsity, and I'm joined by my partner, Scott Barajas, and we have some special uh show tonight. Scotty, we're gonna look at some of the top off-season developments and themes that are going on with teams as they are now in fall camp, and we're about two weeks away um from the season. And Scotty, we've been out there at some passing league, we've talked to a lot of coaches, we've been working on our preview lists, and now we got some things to talk about with the season quickly approaching. How are you feeling about uh where we're at, Scotty?

Hey Dan, pretty good. You know, uh, I'm glad we we're able to jump on this podcast because you know, we've been following um all these teams at these passing tournaments, and you know, we were you know chatting along and we're like, yeah, we got to do a podcast, and so I'm glad we're out or uh here tonight, and um, you know, we're gonna break down some some uh some teams and uh you know give you a little preview of what's going into the season.

Yes, and I'm right there with you, Scotty, and excited to talk with you as well. Um, first game coming up is gonna be August 20th, which is gonna be a Thursday, and that's gonna be Survite playing host to Centennial. Uh that game's gonna be at Orange Coast College. It's gonna be the uh first game as head coach debut for new Survite coach Rick Garretsen, and uh of course Huskies, one of the top teams in in the Southern section in Southern California nationally uh once again. Uh so Sky, let's uh start to uh talk about some of the themes to uh watch this season, uh these theme, these uh top storylines from the the offseason. So let's start with Jay Sarah and you know some of the biggest news that you know the Lions made a quite a big splash in the offseason, but their new uh coach, Hardy Nickerson, the former uh NFL great linebacker, he's the first African-American coach in the Trinity League, so a historical guy, very um experienced and inspirational uh figure for the Lions. And he also has brought in a star-studdied uh roster of um assistant coaches, which is which has been a big um storyline for what uh as well. But when you look at the Lions offseason, what has been the big development in your mind, Scotty?

You know, we saw them, you know, at Edison, and uh obviously, yes, it was, you know, they were, you know, I think there were like 12 coaches out there, um, you know, and he's built, you know, Nick has it's built a high-profile staff with that I think NFL's college ex players, I think that like at least nine of the coaches have played on NFL or college level teams. And um, but uh for Jay Sarah, they you know, the thing with them is that they endured a pretty much a mass, they endured mass departures for the past three seasons. Um but this year was the least number of kids leaving, you know, and it looked like you know, I think that they bought into what Nickerson's brings to the table. Um, and you know, you know, the Lions do have some fills to hold, but I think you know they still have a solid group. You know, I think their strength is gonna be the offensive linemen. Um, and then um they also brought in a pretty solid uh freshman class. And I think a lot of those kids are gonna try to sprinkle in and fill in the holes that they have. Um, but they're you know gonna be led by you know their receiver Clark Coakley and um and their offseason transfer um from North Crawley Haynes Haynes Clouther that you know was at Santa Margarita for a little bit. Um, but that's probably what they're gonna build on. Um and that was you know probably like the development that we saw um you know at Edison, and um, but it's gonna be an interesting group because right now J Ser is probably picked at the bottom of the Trinity League, just on paper, but by no means are they a bottom feeder team. And so I think that you know it's gonna be an interesting year as we talk, you know, throughout the season, it's one that we've yet seen, and we'll get into that a little bit later. But you know, Jay Sarah is gonna be uh right there.

Yeah, you know, I was impressed with uh uh Hardy got seeing him uh interact with the players at the NSI uh tournament. Interesting, he is working on the offense, he's he's uh you know call play calling the offense, which I talked to him about, which was interesting because to me, because he's you know an all-decade you know defensive player from the 1990s in the NFL, but um he is uh uh very involved with the offense, which I was thought was interesting. And like you alluded to with the quarterback uh to watch in in Hayes, one thing to watch with that quarterback, as we record this show on August 3rd, uh when I last checked CIF Southern Section you know transfer website, his transfer was listed as under review. So that's something we need to watch uh as a storyline going forward on his clearance as far as being eligible at J Serum. Sky, let's let's talk about modern day. Um nationally ranked, um once again they've come out in several polls, but they are number nine in the the max preps um preseason rankings for the net for the nation. But it's you know been some comings and goings on the transfer wire that I think uh has caught my eye as far as biggest developments of the offseason for for Modern Day. I think it was a big loss losing uh Gavin Honory to Bishop Um Gorman. That was one of the you know uh you know, because Modern Day graduated so much and he was uh at the wide receiver position, he's a very electric, fast player, and I thought that was a big loss. But at the same time, they do have a couple quarterbacks that have been doing um in the uh in the summer, and like you said, the uh the uh we saw them at the Mission View South County Classic Tournament. Um and those goes, both those guys are transfers in Russell Saconia and um Cameron Pooley. Russell Saconia, a pretty established player from Losinger the last couple last two seasons. Um he's been you know um on some high profile successful teams, and then Cameron Pooley, who's looked good in the summer, uh very much battling. Um Raul Laura has the coach of Modern Day said that both will will probably play um this season. And he said that Cameron uh actually had a little bit of a slight lead um leaving the the South County uh Classic um passing tournament. What's your thoughts on the Modern Day uh development of the offseason, Scotty?

You know, it's probably gonna be the uncharted you know QBs and receivers because I want to say the first time that I can recall that Modern Day doesn't have any high-profile four or five star receivers in the offense. Yeah. Um it's gonna be a young group, probably headed by you know two-way player Ace Latilli, who's probably gonna play a lot more offense this year than defense, but um he's gonna have an unproven junior sophomore and a freshman you know in that lineup at wide receiver. You know, we'll talk a little bit more about that as we go progress. Um, but it was certainly you know a work in uh progress this summer trying to figure out you know the grouping because they were half the time they played, somebody was out, somebody was hurt, somebody wasn't there. Um Modern Day didn't play a lot of high-profile tournaments, you know, except for the Mission View South County you know classic, which they ended up winning the silver division, beating Centennial, who was also surprised to see, you know, come out of that silver division. Um neither squad was at full strength. Um, but that just goes to show you that you know, sometimes you can't always rely on what we see at passing league. It kind of gives us a you know a gauge, but not you know, it gives you the full picture. Um, and then you know, to compound you know, you know, the challenges, you know, they're breaking in the two QBs, you know, you know, Pooley and Sakona, and and like you just touched on it, you know, neither of them have kind of run away or separated, you know, though maybe you had you got it from Laura that he pooly may be a little bit further along, but I think you're gonna look to see both of them play and then figure out down the line if one gets hot or if one you know you know separates and or you know, or they you know look to uh uh you know the freshman they have in you know in their program um who could you know spark some some um dynamics in that offense if if if uh need be. But um yeah, it's it's it's it's weird to figure out this you know, to talk modern day because it's been a long time since we've talked modern day, not you know, kind of you know want to say down, but you know, they're just not at the strength and have the same quality of depth that they used to have. So everybody you know kind of looks at them a little bit differently, but they're still gonna have that that rock solid defense. Um, and um they're gonna have you know, you know, one of the offensive biggest offensive threats in Assir Nemhard, who I hope everyone gets to see because he's he's a special player, he's a dynamic running back. Um but uh yeah, but we'll again we'll touch more on that later on.

So yes. All right, Scotty, let's move on to Orange Lutheran. Um, another coaching change there. Um big news. Um the Lancers have uh their new coach is Ray Fenton, who uh came off of you know a successful stint uh several years at Los Alamitos. You know, just last season, um Coach Fenton led the Griffins to the CIF Division II title. Um they've been playing good competition. Um Ray's a very experienced coach. And uh I was very impressed with um you know that team and and I was impressed with the coaching that uh that Ray delivered. Um I thought um they you know for years they had they they they just showed so much progress with the way they um you know cleaned up their penalties, they um they were very sharp on special teams, um, they adjusted well to their offensive talent. They played played hard. And I thought uh, you know, I thought really uh uh Ray and his staff really showed how far they had come um the last several years and uh very masterful coaching job. And they they did it pretty uh as cool customers too. They they were confident in what they were doing, and um, I just saw a lot of growth, a lot of things just came together. So I wasn't uh it's not too surprising that he landed the training league job. And he, of course, brings um he brings along his son, TJ, who's a uh young offensive coordinator. Um and I I think they do some pretty creative things uh with what they did with Los Al last year. So I think Trinity League football fans should be um they should be prepared to see some maybe some different things from um formation-wise, um maybe the way they use the running backs and receivers, tight ends, um they play up tempo. They they found some things last year offensively that I think other people are looking at. Um so that's gonna be interesting to see how they bring that along. Um, and I mentioned the coaching staff. Um their defensive coordinator is also um a Trinity League name, a very well-known name for modern day, um former modern day defensive coordinator, Eric Johnson, is now the defensive coordinator at Orange Lutheran. Very experienced guy, very uh very um aggressive coach as far as the blitzing um some of the pressures that he expects um his defensive, his cornerbacks to fulfill and the pressure he brings on teams. So he that's something that's interesting to watch. And then lastly, with Orange Lutheran, they got a major transfer just recently, um late last week. Austin Otalaw is a monster junior offensive tackle from Cajon, six foot seven, three hundred five pounds, consensus number one junior, class of 2028 prospect in the state. So that's another tackle that they're gonna put with. Um they already have a very good tackle, uh, Roa, um, who is a tr uh who's a senior committed to Texas. So they have two massive uh tackles. What's your big takeaway on on the storylines uh themes with low with uh Orange Lutheran, Scotty?

Yeah, it's I'm I'm gonna say additions by subtraction. And what I mean by that is that they added, you know, staff uh you know, Fenton and EJ, you know, the new coaching staff, um, and then they showed some excitement in in an offense that struggled last year uh down the stretch. And by what I mean by that is they showed, you know, they put up in the Edison tournament, they put up some fast break, you know, up-tempo passing game at the Battle of the Beach with the same group of skills, you know, and that was led by Tokyo Regan Token, Elijah Brown, uh Ezra Brown, who, you know, both played a lot last year, and I think are going to go into the season as co-starters and play a lot this year. Um, and then you mentioned they picked up the offensive linemen from Cajon, and that's a big need because they needed to fill some spots on that O-line. And then by the subtractions, you know, Olu, you know, they weathered the coaching change, and then they also had some defections. You know, they lost 11 kids, and that's the most out of the Trinity League this year, uh, most notably Marcus Fakatu and uh you know K2, you know, um King Baraka Kizzy were probably the most two, biggest two. Jackson Perez went over to Tustin. He actually was a was a was a returner and defense, um, offensive two-way guy, offensive line, D-tackle, uh Sunate Vunanalehi. He um went over to Sierra Canyon. He was an uh offense and a defensive guy. Defensive lineman Judah Perez went over to Metal Honor today, and then potential starting running back, Jay Nimhard, who was the uh the number two running back for Olu. So I don't know right now. I haven't don't have seen or who's gonna be their running back right now. That's a that's a um question mark for them. They may have somebody in their program, but as far as anybody that has significant experience, so that's gonna be interesting. But uh, but they have some upside, you know, but they have some holes, so it's you know it's gonna be interesting to see how you know they go forward um with it. But it does, you know, you know, I would have to be excited too with with Fenton and the stuff that he does. Um, you know, they may have to score a lot more points, you know. I know their defense, you know, has EJ, but they also have a lot of fills and they don't have the same depth on D line as they as they did before. But but um But yeah, so there we have for Olu.

Yeah, I'm I'm glad you mentioned uh Marcus uh Fakatu. I mean he's at Sierra Canyon. Um he might have been the if he's stuck in Orange County, he might have been the the number one player um in Orange County um coming in the season. He's a reclassified guy, uh defensive lineman who reclassified to join the the the class of uh 2027. Um so that was a that was a major loss. He's a he's a difference maker. Um, you know, and Sierra Cannon's gonna have a you know a stellar uh defensive line with him uh there. And that's that is a huge loss. Um, you know, with my with my hot 150 um list of impact players, you know, Marcus could have been that guy if he was in Orange County. Um so that's how how highly I I thought of him and and what he brings, even as a reclassified, you know, um, you know, moving up one um you know recruiting class, he could have still been number one. Um you mentioned the running back. The guy that uh a name that has come back with Orange Lutheran, uh, and like you kind of speculated, uh, a guy in the program is that they like a sophomore Christensen, uh, who's coming up uh quite talented that they're very uh happy with. I think he's flying under radar, you know, nothing much um as far as um varsity stats as a freshman, um, but that's the name to uh that's come up is uh is him. Um all right, Sky, let's look at uh Santa Margarita, defending uh Division I champion in the Southern section, defending state champion in California. They are number six in the uh preseason max preps national rankings. And I think you know maybe uh the biggest storyline for them um in the offseason was the arrival of transfer quarterback Matthew Smith from Villa Park was it was a big move. Um I think he's looking like the starting quarterback. He's from Vanderbilt. Uh he's a uh I'm sorry, he's a committed to Vanderbilt, and he's got um very, very good looking arm. Um not the biggest guy, but he uh definitely uh has an um you know a pretty electric arm that you watch him throw, and it's pretty apparent how quickly he gets it out, how tight his spiral is, um, and uh you know the velocity of the ball. And uh I think that was a big off-season development. They they had some guys come and go. Uh they had some guys that did arrive um on defense. They did graduate quite a bit of their starters, most of their uh defense um did graduate. Um I think you're looking at maybe two starters back on defense. You probably would go with D Lyman, Isaiah uh Vandermaid, and Karan Um at uh at one of the corner spots. I think those are the two guys um that are returning starters. But what's your thoughts on you know Santa Margarita, Scotty?

Yeah, the filling position of needs. And um, you know, like last year, you know, Santa Margarita filled all their positions of needs, and that was crucial, you know, that led to their their championship. And again, this year they got QB Matt Smith, you know, the Vandy commit from Villa Park. They did get middle linebacker Alan Kenneth from Survite, and then the UCLA commit, free safety, pull-A Moala. However, Kenneth did decide to go back to Survite, Moala and back to Lusinger, who, as of today, earlier today, after you saw, he was he's now heading to Sarah. So that'll be interesting. Um, but the reason Moala went back is he reclassified to the 2026 class. He's supposed to be a uh a junior, and then he also wanted to graduate early. So and I guess it just wasn't gonna work out at Santa Margarita, you know, with that, you know, you know, kind of springing that on at the last minute. And uh so they lost out on those two guys, uh, Moala having to go back. And that would have strengthened their defense, which is already solid. It's just not as formidable as as you want to say last year's. Um, and they're probably gonna rely on some top freshmen who we'll talk about um you know later on, and then we're probably gonna see you know some position changes of some two-way guys playing the linebacker. Um, but really I think Matt Smith is probably the you know the key of all of that. He's solid, he's gonna be the key to their success, I think, going forward. And um, I expect him to do well uh with this offense. So yeah.

All right, yeah. Um speaking of, we talked about the Mission VHO passing tournament. Uh Santa Margarita kind of had one of their, you know, under Carson Palmer, you know, in his second year, that was they finished second uh at that tournament uh to Sierra Canyon. And um that was probably the most high high profile tournament that they have done the best in uh under uh Carson Palmer. So that was uh a strong offseason um development. I thought Carson Sun also played well at quarterback. He he's shared a lot of uh snaps with um Matthew Smith throughout the summer and uh definitely made some progress uh stepping up. But I think uh Smith looks like the guy, he's a senior. Um and uh I think we'll also have to watch the health of uh Grant Mosley, um uh receiver. Didn't play, uh didn't see him. I mean, I know he was definitely out at the um Mission VO tournament. He was also out for, I believe, the Edison tournament. So he's a guy that's gotta get healthy. Um uh and we'll have to watch um his health as well. All right, Scotty, let's look at um Survite. Got our third new coach um in the league in the offseason, and that was the arrival of Rick Garrettson. Um he is a very experienced coach, got a lot of ties uh from Arizona, where he was a head coach and an uh offensive coordinator. Um, and then he's also uh has um ties as a you know prominent assistant coach at Survite. He's coming back, knows the school very well, and he takes the reins. Um as a really a veteran who's um I think gonna bring some stability um to the survite program. Um he's he's kind he's kind of been through and seen um you know um face a lot of these top programs, and he's very familiar with he's known a lot of the the the powers that be in Southern California for a long time and and through his ties with Arizona, he he's actually played um and coach with some of uh some of these opponents in Southern California. There was a time um that he he played against uh Centennial Um Corona. You know, he knows Coach Logan, he's been on an all-star staff with Jason Negro. Um you know, they he's very familiar with Orange County. Um so um though that's it's an interesting hire where he has a lot of experience coming into obviously a challenging league. So I think that was a huge development uh for servite. And then you mentioned it earlier, Scotty. The return of Alan Kennet at um at linebacker was even at Coach Um Garrettson said, huge get because he is a uh a really good junior uh linebacker, um, maybe the best junior linebacker in Orange County. Um and he um he had been you know spent some time at Santa Margarita during the spring. He's coming back uh to really solidify that uh linebacker uh core. You know, he'll he'll hook up with uh a pairing with Isaiah, um a Washington commit uh in the linebacking crew for the Friars, and that will be uh quite a uh pairing. So that was huge for him to get to come back. Surright has lost some guys um to transfer out. Um one I'll I you know one was Elijah Mueller, uh really good offensive lineman who went to St. John Bosco. Um but uh those are some of the big developments. Um Coach Garrison's um son is gonna be uh offensive uh coordinator. Uh Coach Redfern is sticking as the defensive coordinator. Um but uh coach Garrison, um experienced coach at the top, and um I think he's uh you know, I think they're that's uh that's been a big uh key for them in the offseason. What do you uh have on survey, Scotty?

Yeah, pretty much what you already had said, so I'll just piggyback a little bit on on that. Um you know, they opt, they also weathered off the season defections. Um they had 10, um, and that was headlined by you already mentioned Elijah Mueller going to Bosco, uh defensive back, Isaiah Dance going to Modern Day, and then defensive lineman, edge rusher, Sevino Taluno, who went to Polly, and then Steele Holcomb, who probably would have, you know, he would have been the uh two running back tandem with Wells this year. Um he went over to Tustin. So those were like the key guys. Um but um you know Servite has has a pretty good solid, I think, nucleus of of skill guys that they can build off of. Um so we'll just see if that if if if that and combined they got Gino Lang from uh from J Sarah. Um so if if they can combine that and get some offensive consistency that they had a hard time with last year, they'll be a totally different team. Um so uh that's what we got from Survite.

Yeah, Gino Wang, the quarterback uh from J Sarah. So uh looking to connect with those servite speed players and try to uh unlock the the potential and the playmaking that a lot of those guys have. Um one of them, Scotty, just recently uh committed, uh and that was uh Benjamin Harris uh from one of the one of the uh few several track guys that they have from their state championship track team. Benjamin Harris just recently committed to Oregon State. Um, and interesting enough, he's got committed there as uh an athletic weapon, really, um, as it's been described. Um he's a receiver, but you know, with that Oregon State commitment, it seems like he's really an athlete, and you know, that's something that I'm sure Survite's gonna try to get more of him involved and and all those guys with uh the speed that they bring. And you you mentioned Wells, and uh there's a few other guys that we need to keep and keep track of, and I'm sure we'll talk more about, but um, that will be interesting uh development. All right, Scotty. Uh last but not least, I went in alphabetical order tonight, St. John Bosco, number one team in the country uh in the max prep um national rankings. Um, hey, a big off-season development for the Braves is that hey, they scheduled none other than Bishop Gorman for their season opener. That's a pretty big news, Scotty. That's gonna be on that first Friday night, August uh 21st. The Braves will be in Las Vegas, Nevada. We'll be interested to see how hot that is. But hey, you know, training league, including modern day, has made that trip before and played there um in some hot weather. But it's gonna be now it's gonna be the Braves for the first time going to Bishop Gorman. That should be uh quite a scene. Um, and uh how about uh you mentioned um Elijah Mueller is one of the biggest transfers. Um he's a junior offensive lineman. Um very good. And we we've been talking a little bit about passing league performances.

John Bosco did win the Edison battle at the beach tournament in uh early July. That they hadn't won that in a um several years, if they if they have won it at all. Um they've been in the finals, but they had a very good run to win it all this year, and impress went undefeated. And uh that was a big um offseason um achievement for Coach Jason Negro's uh program. So there's a couple things going on with the uh with the Braves. Um obviously headline with that uh monster game against Bishop Gorman to start off the season. What do you have on St. John Bosco, Scotty?

You know, it's their young but deep receiving core. Yeah, you know, so we saw this past weekend that they've been there, the consensus, probably number one um team going into the season, and it they sure looked apart at Edison's Battle of the Beach. Um, even with the young and you know, new receiving core that was put on display, and they weren't even at full strength. Um, you would have never guessed it, but you know, they go seven or eight deep, and I think the two guys were out, but you would never have known it. Uh DJ Tubbs is their guy returning with the most experience, and he's certainly gonna be their receiver number one. But after him, Coa's gonna have his pick from you know, probably the top sophomore, 6'5, Kakua Malali. He's that he came, he was that late season transfer that came from Bishop Montgomery. And um he played like the last half of the season, but he played defense, and this year he's gonna play offense, and he uh, along with David Plunkett, Jacob Reed, Travram Banks, Joshua Lard, are you know, those guys, you're gonna hear those names. And then, you know, Moala probably could be the best out of that group, and he has a skill set similar to the former servite you know receiver, uh Tutora McMillan. He's like a poor man T-Mac. I know that's probably saying a lot, but he's got really good skills. Um, and um, you know, I think you're gonna see that this year. So Cole won't have a shortage of guys to get the ball to. And that's pretty much you know, the only probably question marks that you probably have for Bosco is we'll dive more into it later. Um, but that's probably just being being that a you know passing league, and you have you know, um, you know, receiving core with a bunch of new guys, but obviously, you know, those new guys are talented, and I don't think you should have any issues. I think that you know they'll just move right along.

Yeah. All right, so there you have it. Uh you know, look at all six Trinity League teams and uh some of their big off-season developments. Took you through Jay Sarah, Moder Day, Orange Lutheran, Santa Margarita, Servite, and St. John Bosco, three new head coaches, and uh some question marks, some strengths, and uh shaping up to be another very interesting season. Um you get the feel a little bit with obviously with some of the things that Scotty maybe said about Modern Day, some of the uh maybe some of the obviously a lot of the question marks with the Santa Margarita um defense and and how they reload um some of the young players at some of these programs, the changes at Orange Lutheran. It could be um it could be uh pretty unpredictable and and surprising, I think, at some spots, Scotty. As as as good as St. John Bosco does look, um, this could still be a very interesting run.

Yeah, exactly. That's why I was saying that it'll be a season that we have not seen in a long time because it's we're used to Modern Day and Bosco just running the table. And I know Bosco's right there, but I still think that after that, you know, you know, Santa Margarita still, you know, got it, but I still think you know Olu could be, and if Modern Day can find that within, you know, that defense is going to be pretty good, you know. But if they can find some these these young receivers that step up, you know, they can make the you know those those games interesting and tight. Same with servite, same with Jay Sarah. So from top to bottom, at least in the you know, after Bosco, any of those games could go either way, you know. But we'll just have to see, you know, and again, we'll break it down a little bit more in detail as we get to our to the previews. So all right.

As as Scotty said, uh previews. So I would say uh uh key uh time for our listeners, and of course, we're um excited to have you back, and we appreciate all the support you give the show. And uh we're looking uh like I said, the first week of the season is uh August 20th and 21st. That's a Thursday, Friday. Um, so we should have a show, you know. Uh, I would say, you know, by the 19th, 18th, 19th, you should be able to see uh here a season preview uh for us.
