On December 30th, 1992, a motorist driving down US Highway 78 near Summerville, South Carolina came upon a grisly scene. Police were called to the site, where a young woman with six gun shots had been dumped along the side of the road. She had been shot five times as close range through the jaw and once in the arm. The victim was alive when the motorist found her, but died at the scene before medical assistance arrived. It would be a couple of days before police identified the woman as 25-year-old Melissa McLauchlin. Six men and two women would be charged with the crime. The men were or had been active duty in the Navy.
