Speaker 1:

Hello and welcome to the Super Size Physiopodcast. My name is Dave and I'm here to tell you about a new game called Porch Pirates. Oh, you're gonna love this game and your kids will love it too, so let's go, alright. So Porch Pirates is a game I modified from coach Jalardi I hope I'm saying his name right. I saw it on Twitter, I think he posts on TikTok things like that and I took his game and kind of modified it for the outside and to fit the needs of my students a little better and to get a visual of what we're doing and what we're talking about today, you can grab a free PDF of Porch Pirates and that will be in the link in the show notes.

Speaker 1:

So, to start, you may have different numbers of students than I do. I use this as a two-class game. This could be a one-class game, but I have large groups, like most of you do as well. So what I do is put hoops out all over the place, all over the field I have in one area, so they can't go too far, but I kind of map out the area with cones and I spread out the hoops pretty good, I'd say at least about 8 to 10 feet apart from each other. Now I do this especially early in the morning because I want to make sure it's out there and ready, because if I have my younger students they come out first and if I tell them to go spread out it doesn't always work, although I do try to do that in different games. They're just not as good at it as some of the older students of finding open space. You know that's a big topic. It's a big thing we work on. Is finding open space, talking about where the best places are to defend, where the best places are to get the most action and to get the most, in this case, bean bags. So those are some questions you can ask the students. But going back to the beginning, I do set them up ahead of time. I put the hoops out there and spread them out. It doesn't matter what color, but if you have a variety of colors I try to mix them up a little bit. This is due to a variation later in the games where you can mix things up and have different teams formed based on color. So after that I put anywhere between two and three, or even four, I guess, bean bags around the outside of each loop. Now again, the older students can do this, the younger students they can, but it's easier to have a preset ahead of time. So after that I explain the game to them. They will be in teams of two. There will be a few teams of three, based on, you know, odd numbers or some students just don't know each other and just work well together and things like that, but it should be a team of two. Again, threes okay, fours are way too many, so twos or threes, twos are the best.

Speaker 1:

So after that we decide, or they decide, who is going to be the tagger to start, and they are going to be the guards of the porch pirates. They're going to protect their porches with a noodle, a foam noodle. The other person, the other player or teammate, will be the one trying to grab or steal the presence I call them from the porches the Amazon gifts, I guess. So that person will go around and try to grab one present, or bean bag, or deck ring, whatever kind of gift you have to put around the outside edges of the hoops. So again, each team will start with we'll go with three, because I modified it Originally. I said, or I put out, two. I think three is the best. So there's three presents all and they can't be clumped together. They have to be spread out around the hoop and the person trying to steal I guess partner B will go try to grab one Present from another hoop and bring it back and put around their hoop. And they go and take one present at time and if they get tagged they have to go back to their own porch or their own home hoop and do a set exercise Like five, jump a jacks or something like that.

Speaker 1:

Now I, you, could have a spot, a you know place to go, like outside the boundaries, and then they could do it. Or you can send them back to the porches or you can Just make them do something different. It's up to you. They could, they could do, go do a cup stacking exercise. They could do anything you want. They can be frozen, somebody can unfreeze them, things like that. You can make that up as you go. But what I found to be most effective is to have them just do five again of an exercise. They could do a lap around the boundaries, things like that. So anything you know, be creative with that. That can go any way that you can do anything with that.

Speaker 1:

So we play this game for about two or three minutes that it's not a super long game, because kids get tired and Then we end up either talking about strategies, talking about teamwork, you know, letting them get a drink if it's hot out, especially Taking a break and then they switch partners. Partner a that was the tagger becomes the porch pirate partner be switches with with him or her. Now if there's team of three, I tell them they can switch periodically. But if I notice that one person's always a tagger or, you know, always not the tagger, I kind of interview being to make sure that they do switch. So obviously the goal is to collect as many beanbags there's many treasures as you can, as your group can, and you'll see it. You'll see some with just a ton of of treasure and some with hardly any. Now I do tell them not to give up if they don't have any treasure, because they still can get treasure along the way. So there are teams with zero and so they're just kind of standing there. They're not guarding anything, but their partner or partners are going at the same time, going to get them and, as a modification, you could have them lay down their noodle and just be an extra kind of go-getter porch pirate and then once they bring one or two bad Well one back, they can start guarding again. So that could be another modification there.

Speaker 1:

And this game has lots of modifications. You can again do different exercises different. You know Consequences for being tagged. You can have them switch at different Intervals. You could have them Again team up. Let's say if you have a green hoop, you could only get. You can't get any green, other green hoop you know you can't take from the green hoops. Or if you have a certain color hoop, let's say you're a green hoop, you can only grab green treasure or green presents. So there are different modifications for this and I think it's a great game.

Speaker 1:

By the way, we played this for our reindeer games, which was like a mini field day in the winter time. We played this. It was definitely a great holiday game but it could be played anytime. You can call it different things if you want. Again, I just thought it was kind of funny. They would call a porch pirates. And the parents got a kick out of it too during the reindeer games. They were volunteers and I told them it's a life skill, you know, guarding your porch against Amazon porch pirates. So, anyways, that is porch pirates.

Speaker 1:
