Speaker 1:

Hello and welcome to the Supersize Phys Ed podcast. My name is Dave and today I want to talk about music montages, where they came from for me at least, and what you can do to make them and make them really cool for your students so that you can warm up with them almost every day or every day. So, without further ado, here we go. All right, PE Nation. So I see this a lot online, like how do I get my students moving? What do I do? What's the instant activity? Or what's the warm-up? How do you do warm-ups? And I see a lot of. Well, we do static stretching and we do these rigid, militaristic warm-ups and, by the way, that's what what my in my current school they used to do like every day. They just do these exercises, no music, no nothing, just exercises. Like you're at um. If you ever seen um dive ramp a kid, the one with spag union I always tell my kids I'm a son of the spag union. It's where it's like this military school where they're doing all these push-ups and nobody's having fun. Spag Union that's kind of where my class was doing. My classes were doing before I got there and I changed it with a lot of music and the paras were not happy at first, but eventually they're like, hey, thanks for bringing music back to our school. So it's definitely a good thing to have music and in this case, music montages. So let's go to the whole thing here.

Speaker 1:

The idea came to me not that I made music montages like I created them, but for PE. I was walking around Disney downtown, Disney Disney Springs, it's called now in Orlando and I saw this guy. Well, they have a stage there. If you've ever been there or never been there, I'll tell you about it. They have a stage and a lot of times they'll bring out bands or they'll bring out performers or whatever. So they brought this guy and he was playing little clips of famous songs. And he was playing little clips of famous songs like YMCA, Stayin' Alive, Jump Around. He was playing Walk Like an Egyptian, things like that. But he wasn't playing the whole song, he was playing little pieces of it and he was getting the crowd going. It was awesome, it was fun to watch and I was like, well, how can I do that in PE? And, by the way, he had a little buffer boomer in between, which you know what a boomer is. I played it a lot. You know what a boomer is, Something like that. It's a buffer in between songs. So I decided well, I want to play a lot of these songs and some are inappropriate, by the way, but you can cut out the inappropriate parts. I'll give you an example. By the way, real quick, One of my students' favorite mixes has Fireball and there's parts in Fireball that I don't want them to hear.

Speaker 1:

If you don't know Fireball, it's by Pitbull and there's a part in it that's like I don't know Smacked Her Booty or something like that. I'm like, oh, I better not play that part, so I just play the part without that Same thing with oh, I better not play that part, so I just play the part without that Same thing. With Poison by Belvedere DeVoe, where it's that girl is poison, never trust, a big butt and a smile. Oh, I cut that part out. So I just did up to that part, like right before that part, and I had to put a boomer in there. But we still got to hear part of it and it's a famous song and it's fun. We do a little dance with it, exercise even the song Um everybody by a backstreet boys because they say am I original? Um, yeah, Am I the only one? And he says am I sexual? Ooh, I don't play that part. So With GarageBand you can either put something in that spot or you can just delete it, Like I just go around it and delete that part. So it's really cool because I could put different things together and the students really enjoy it.

Speaker 1:

So I have a fun Friday mix that the kids love. It's YMCA, then Staying Alive, Jump Around, it's Follow the Leader, and then it's Blame it on the Boogie with Michael Jackson. That's a Michael Jackson song, and what's the other one? It is, oh, Jump On it, you know, from the Fresh Prince. But I don't have them thrust forward, they just kind of go side to side with their hips and then, you know, go around in a circle with their hands in the air there and then go around in a circle with their hands in the air. There's a few other songs in there, but it's things like that. They love it.

Speaker 1:

That's our Friday mix and I have kids come up and lead the dances because we have three and a half. We have like 75 to 100 kids, actually more than 75. It's probably like 90 to 100 kids. We'll have 20 kids come up and lead the dances because they know them and they've done it for a couple of years. They love it. But I have other mixes as well, and I'll put those out there. I have younger mixes with, like Baby Shark and Taco what is it Rating? Tacos and Space Unicorn and that kind of thing. So I play that with the little kids, and then different mixes with different students, and then different mixes with different students age-wise.

Speaker 1:

So how do I do it? That's the big question, right? So I go through. I don't know what's it called iTunes anymore. It's Apple, I guess it's Apple Music.

Speaker 1:

And the main thing, though and this can be a little more expensive you have to purchase the songs. That's the main thing. You can't just be streaming, which I stream, but if I really want YMCA, I got to buy the song. It's like a buck, and I put the songs together in GarageBand and I spliced them and put a little boomer in between. You can do it on Audacity, I'm sure too. I just use GarageBand.

Speaker 1:

I'm using GarageBand right now as I'm recording this, and you just make your own mixes, and it's great. And it's like I said, you don't have to play all of YMCA, you just play part of it. You're staying alive. You jump around, Like I said, I have Footloose on there. I have, uh, um, what is love? Baby, Don't hurt me, you know, yeah, I'm a great singer. I know, Um, anything on there. I have a lot of Toby Mac on there. Um, yeah, it's awesome and definitely give it a try.

Speaker 1:

And now it is time for your cowbell tip of the day. All right, everybody. So your tip of the day is to check out my video in the show notes of how I create these music montages and definitely add even if you don't use my way, definitely add music to your warm-ups. I think it's the way to go. Definitely less rigid stuff, more fun for the students. I still have students that are in high school. They're like oh man, I remember that music mix. I remember the dances you did in PE. I'm actually just teaching them a new dance right now. It's a line dance from a country song that I like. I was like oh, I like this song and just definitely add music, if nothing else. But this is more on the music montage, I guess, topic. So check out my video. It's not that difficult to make these and the kids will love it. So that is your cowbell tip of the day.
