Welcome to Elmhurst CRC's Daily Dose of the Word of God. It's Tuesday, March 17, and I'm Kara Hackert. Today's reading is from John 19, verses 1 through 6 - Jesus sentenced to be crucified. The spotlight is on Jesus with the apostle John as our guide. After I'm done reading, let's take a moment of silence.

Then Pilate took Jesus and had him flogged. The soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns and put it on his head. They clothed him in a purple robe and went up to him again and again, saying, "Hail, King of the Jews!" and they slapped him in the face. Once more, Pilate came out and said to the Jews gathered there, "Look, I am bringing him out to you to let you know that I find no basis for a charge against him." When Jesus came out wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe, Pilate said to them, "Here is the man." As soon as the chief priests and their officials saw him, they shouted, "Crucify, crucify!" But Pilate answered, "You, take him and crucify him. As for me, I find no basis for a charge against him."

Lord Jesus, we come before you now heavy and sad remembering how you were treated. We're sad remembeirng how you were beaten and mocked, yet you did not turn away. You went through this suffering to save us. You took on this pain in our place because you love us. When the crowd is choosing fear, anger and judgment, we ask that you help us to show love and compassion like you. H elp us to see your image in others. Forgive us, Lord, when we forget about your sacrifice. Forgive us when you choose cruelty over kindness. Forgive us when we don't live like you want us to - turn us back to you and your ways. We thank you Jesus for enduring the cross for our sake and for the sake of the whole world. Help us to walk with you through the sorrow of this story, knowing that your love leads to resurrection and new life. In your name we pray, amen.
