Welcome to Elmhurst CRC’s Daily Dose of the Word of God. It’s Tuesday, April 14. Today’s reading is from Acts 9:1-6  It is the Season of Easter and we are Living it Forward!

Rachel Klooster  0:20

Meanwhile, Saul was uttering threats with every breath and was eager to kill the Lord’s followers. So he went to the high priest. He requested letters addressed to the synagogues in Damascus, asking for their cooperation in the arrest of any followers of the Way he found there. He wanted to bring them—both men and women—back to Jerusalem in chains. As he was approaching Damascus on this mission, a light from heaven suddenly shone down around him. He fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to him, “Saul! Saul! Why are you persecuting me?” “Who are you, lord?” Saul asked. And the voice replied, “I am Jesus, the one you are persecuting! Now get up and go into the city, and you will be told what you must do.”

Rachel Klooster 1:12

Saul was very distracted by his “mission” of trying to hunt down and kill all of the Jesus followers. It took a light from heaven, and Jesus himself to get him to change his course.  We all have our own mission and we live in a very distracting and busy world. What does it take for Jesus to get our attention? Is it pain? Is it waiting? Maybe it’s uncertainty or anxiety. Maybe it’s a common cold that makes us slow down a bit. Does God purposely give us hard things to get our attention? I’m not sure, but I do know that he uses the hard things to help us see his love and grace. And to remind us to slow down and turn to him, instead of racing ahead on our own agenda.  God’s timing is a funny thing. Why didn’t he confront Saul sooner? Why did he let so many Christian believers be victims of Saul? It can be a mystery why God lets us go down a path longer than we would like. And God doesn’t give us all the answers immediately - like in this passage he told Saul to go to the city and then he would be told what to do next.  What we can rely on is that Jesus is here, ready to work with us. As he says in verse 6 when Saul asks “Who are you Lord” he responds with: "I am Jesus!"

Rachel Klooster 2:33

Let's pray. Dear God, thank you for seeking us out. Help us to have peace with your timing and to seek you for our next steps. In Jesus name, amen.
