welcome to Elmhurst CRC's Daily Dose in the Word of God. It's Monday, April 27th. This is Jeff Klein, reminding you to take your faith with you throughout the week beyond Sunday,

Jeff Klein  0:18

A group of scientists have been studying the human body in its idling state translation - sitting at a desk, in front of the TV, behind the wheel. What are the effects when a human being barely moves at all? So as scientists do, they ran tests hooking electrodes to people's bodies while they sat. What did they find? Muscles go dormant, the brain actually flat lines, and the risk of heart disease increases exponentially with the number of hours spent sitting.  Their bottom line conclusion: sitting kills. Are you dying? How much sitting do you do?

Jeff Klein 0:54

One of the most celebrated things about the American church is how many people are sitting in the seats on a Sunday morning, but spiritually speaking, do you ever wonder how all that sitting has affected us? Does sitting kill our spirits also? You know, Jesus talked about this. He told a parable, kind of about this. It goes like this

Jeff Klein 1:15

Therefore, everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, the winds blew and beat against the house, yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand.

Jeff Klein  1:35

The rain came down, the streams rose, the winds blew beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash. Notice Jesus doesn't say everyone who hears these words of mine and discusses them in a small group, who hears a sermon on them, who sits and listens to podcasts about them, who analyzes them quietly in their space or room, but everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice, actually gets up and does something that's the person whose house is built on the rock. So sitting is sitting really what this following Jesus thing is all about? Even the word following Jesus indicates we probably have to get out of our seats. So is your spiritual life flat lined? Maybe you're sitting too much. What if you got up and actually tried to put into practice the things that Jesus has called us to do in the world? Wow, that could be super exciting.

Jeff Klein  2:33

Let's pray. Jesus help us to get out of our seats and to actually try to put into practice some of the things you've called us and told us to do. Help us to know, Lord. If we do, we will grow immensely in our relationship with you, and we will make our lives rain proof, storm proof and wave proof. In your name Jesus we pray, amen.
