Welcome to Elmhurst CRC’s Daily Dose of the Word of God. This is Jason Turner. It’s Wednesday, May 6th. Today’s reading is from Philippians 1:7-9. It is the Season of Easter and we are Living it Forward!

It is right for me to feel this way about all of you, since I have you in my heart and, whether I am in chains or defending and confirming the gospel, all of you share in God’s grace with me. God can testify how I long for all of you with the affection of Christ Jesus. And this is my prayer: that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight, so that you may be able to discern what is best and may be pure and blameless for the day of Christ…

When Paul wrote the book of Philippians, he was in prison for christ and the defense of the Gospel. In verse 7, Paul declares his affection for the Philippians. Do we declare our affection for the people of God known as Elmhurst CRC? Take a moment right now and thank God for one way that our church family has stood by you during a time of need. Almost 1 year into my new staff role, my love for y’all grows as we share in God’s grace together and partner in the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Paul was showing gratitude and joy for the Philippians. They stood by Paul during the trials he experienced for the sake of the Gospel. We know Paul was a well-educated man of great intellect who quoted poets, spoke multiple languages, and was a student of Scripture. This passage reveals that Paul had a great heart. British Methodist Bible scholar Adam Clarke paraphrased Paul’s idea this way: “I call God to witness that I have the strongest affection for you, and that I love you with that same kind of tender concern with which Christ loved the world when he gave himself for it.” Paul called upon God as his witness to this deep love for the Philippians in his heart. Paul had a tough mind and tender heart. What a powerful combination for Christ and his Church. Philippians 1:9: And this is my prayer: that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight.

Let's pray. Holy and loving God, thank you for the deep love that the Philippians and Paul shared with one another as they partnered in the Gospel. No matter how much love we have for each other, we can still pray to have more. We learn that this Christ, like love, is not a blind love, but a love that has knowledge and discernment. We pray for more of that kind of love. All for your glory. Amen and have a great day.
