You're listening to Coffee Break Theology, a King of Kings podcast.
SPEAKER_02:Hey friends, welcome back to Coffee Break Theology, where rich doctrine meets real life one venti cup at a time. Venti cup.
SPEAKER_01:I don't even know the sizes anymore.
SPEAKER_02:You just make up Latin words and it's fine. I don't know any Latin words. Yeah. Grande vente vente solo. I feel like Lexi is one. There's one for the T's. I don't know that. Wow, we're so far off right now. We better get back on the screen. We better redeem this.
SPEAKER_01:Yeah, exactly. He's Greg. I'm Marcus. Today we're talking about a word that sounds churchy, but it's packed with power. Redemption.
SPEAKER_02:Right? It's more than a word for coupons or gift cards. In scripture, redemption means rescued, ransomed, and restored.
SPEAKER_01:Right. It's about being bought back. And from what? From slavery, from death, from from the devil, from our sin, and given a whole new identity in Christ.
SPEAKER_02:So the word redeem comes from the word of slavery and debt. So to redeem someone meant to pay the price to set them free.
SPEAKER_01:And that's the exact picture that scripture gives us. In Titus, again, there we go. Titus 2 14, Greg's future son, Paul says this to G uh Jesus gave himself for us to redeem us from all unrighteousness or lawlessness.
SPEAKER_02:Yeah, and then Peter writes in his first letter, uh, Peter 1, 18 through 19, it says, You are ransomed, not with perishable things like silver, gold, but with the precious blood of Christ. And I would actually even say this goes back to we always with the New Testament in in this um terminology and um in this uh theology, we can always look back to where is that also coming from? So this would be also the blood that is over the doorframe. So this should come back to the ransoming of the Israelites in their slavery. Very cool.
SPEAKER_01:So the blood of Christ, yeah, redemption is not cheap, it costs Jesus everything, costs his life.
SPEAKER_02:Man, and it costs Jesus everything for us. Um, Luther writes about this uh also in the second article of of the creed. He says, Jesus has redeemed me, a lost, condemned person.
SPEAKER_01:He purchased and won me from all sins, from death and the power of the devil. That's threefold bondage, and it's a total rescue.
SPEAKER_02:So this is what's powerful. Luther finishes that section reminding us of the scripture that it wasn't bought with gold or silver, perishable things, but his holy, precious blood, and innocent. Like he he had no sin, he knew no sin, and yet he became sin for us. Suffering and death. Right.
SPEAKER_01:Redemption is not a theory either. It's it's the bloody, historical, necessary sacrificial work of Jesus on the cross for you.
SPEAKER_02:Yeah, so so how do we go from uh slaves to sons, right? Or or lost to children. And and this is what makes redemption different than just a rescue. It it doesn't actually pull you out of something, it actually brings you into something.
SPEAKER_01:Right. Galatians 4 puts it this way God sent his son to redeem those under the law so that we might receive adoption as sons, adoption as sons. This this piece holds a special place in my heart. My wife and I adopted our oldest son, Malachi. And I know, Greg, you're adopted, so this is something special for you as well. That that adoption, those adoptions, they're everyday reminders for us what Jesus won for me, and that's adoption into the family of God.
SPEAKER_02:Yeah, adoption is such uh, you know, I I as as as you have shared as parents who adopted, you chose to bring a child into your family. Right. Um, as an adopted child, I'm reminded that I was specifically chosen. Like, and and for me, I had some health issues, some stuff out there, and my parents learned about that before I was even born and still chosen me in spite of myself. So it's it's just beautiful. And that that's what happens. So so redemption makes us family. We're no longer slaves or outsiders, right? But now you're a child of God, and man, that's huge.
SPEAKER_01:Yeah, definitely. And it's not just a future promise, it's not something that might happen later on, it's a present reality. Through baptism, we're reunited with Christ in his death and resurrection, as Romans 6 tells us.
SPEAKER_02:Yeah, and and so in that baptism, right, we we speak of it this way it's a daily dying and rising, right? Like it's a daily dying to ourselves and rising as Christian Christians, redeemed people, and we're never the same.
SPEAKER_01:Right. So again, let's bring this to to everyday life here. Yeah, what does this mean on a Monday morning when the alarm goes off and and life feels unholy?
SPEAKER_02:Yeah, it means we get to live from redemption, not towards it. Right? You you've already been redeemed. So live out of that. You don't have to earn your way back, you don't have to say, I'll I'm gonna just like try to do all the right things, right? You get to live who's already been brought near. Awesome.
SPEAKER_01:And in a world that says you are what you do. A lot of people's identity are mixed up in what they do or what they've done or what they accomplish, or what you've screwed up, right? And I think a lot of people live with that every day. But redemption says you are what Christ has done for you. Yeah, it's totally different.
SPEAKER_02:Yeah, and that that's where it's a reminder, like, you know, I think, especially in our Western world, like we we use terminology to put like I am a father, right? Like that that's putting my identity in that. And those are some identities, but they can't be our primary identity. Exactly. Our primary primary identity is is I'm a child of God. Definitely. And what that means is you're free. Yep. Not to do whatever you want, right? So this is not like, okay, I'm free, Christ has redeemed me, now I can live any way I want. But instead to serve others, to love boldly, and to walk in the joy of the gospel every day.
SPEAKER_01:Beautiful. Paul says this in 1 Corinthians, he he explains it this way you were bought with a price. You have worth. So glorify God with your body. We were bought first. We didn't become valuable, and then Jesus is like, Oh, I should go buy that. That's not what happened. We were we were unholy, we were sinners, we were filthy rags. But now our identity isn't Christ. He saved us, and that's our identity. We are called to do God's will by serving those around us. That's just an outpouring of his love.
unknown:Yeah.
SPEAKER_02:Yeah, I love this. Someone, someone just recently reminded me, like they were talking about how we have we carry the image of God within us. And that image isn't that we look like Christ, it is that we we be like Christ, and we help people receive the emotions of being in front of Christ, which is love and mercy and kindness and grace and joy. So here's your takeaway today redemption is costly. Yep, but it's a personal rescue that Jesus has won for you, right?
SPEAKER_01:And you were you were not too lost to be found, you're not too broken to be made new, you were worth the blood that it took from Christ in his death, his innocent suffering and death. You are worth that.
SPEAKER_02:And that's so important because Satan tries to speak those lies that I've done too much for that redemption to count. And and so I think that's just that's just something that needs to be stirred within us all the time. So join us next time on Coffee Break Theology as we discuss righteousness.
SPEAKER_01:And until then, remember, you are redeemed.
SPEAKER_02:You are free, you are his. Amen.
