The Speakeasy with Lauren and Eric

From the hosts of the Speakeasy Podcast, Eric and Lauren:
When we recorded this episode this winter, we merely intended to discuss an historical case that interested both of us. In the time since, following the murder of George Floyd, the themes and events of this episode have become particularly relevant to this moment in time.
The Massie-Kahahawai case was a miscarriage of justice perpetrated to prop up a system of racialized inequality. The murder of Joseph Kahahawai is an example of the kind of vigilantism and state complicity in racial inequality that exists in America today. As always, we have attempted to approach our subject with respect. We may have fallen short in some respects, and we encourage you to let us know if we have.
The timing of this episode is coincidental to the protests occurring in our country. We are not attempting to capitalize on those protests, merely commenting on the same power structures that caused the deaths of Floyd and Kahahawai, and the failures of justice that both men's deaths represent.

**Trigger warnings for sexual assault and violence against people of color and Indigenous people.**
