Podcast 246 Exploring "The Art of Perception" with Dr. William Anderson Gittens

Abstract

In my 2025 book The Art of Perception (ISBN 978-976-97788-8-7), Dr. William Anderson Gittens,D.D. explores the multifaceted concept of perception, proposing the paradoxical statement, "the less you look, the more you see." This text offers an analysis of how professionals across various fields—ranging from writers and photojournalists to cultural practitioners and podcasters—engage with this idea. Through the lens of his extensive experience as a writer, publisher, photojournalist, and cultural theorist, I underscore the importance of reducing surface-level observation to achieve deeper understanding. The conversation examines this paradox through multiple professional perspectives, including theological insight, creative processes, ethical storytelling, cultural theory, and media arts. Each field reveals how slowing down and engaging with internal processes enhances professional insight, fosters empathy, and promotes critical thinking. The conclusion advocates for an enriched approach to perception that transcends conventional, superficial engagement with the world.
